The original installation a few years ago seemingly went well. They came out on time and on schedule. However, fast forward 3 years and after multiple inspections, I noticed that the unit wasn't performing very well, especially during the summer and winter. The unit would continuously run and the indoor temperature wouldn't go below 78 in the summer. When I had them inspect the unit, no one ever pointed out that the return duct had not been installed. Only recently did I get a second opinion from another company (I-HVAC) I found on Angie's List and he very easily pointed out the lack of the return duct, and that the unit couldn't cool because it was pulling hot air from the outside. John (one of the owners) came out to inspect the unit and agreed on the missing return duct. He then scheduled the installation team to come out and install the missing return duct. The installation did go well and now my unit seems to be performing as it should. However, during the 3 years it wasn't working properly, my electric bill was upwards of $200 (my house is only about 980 sq ft). Although there is no physical/visible damage, I am now concerned that there may be some serious damage to my unit after it running as hard as it did for the past few years. From now on, I-HVAC will be completing all HVAC services for my home.

Work was fine. I have no problems with the work that was performed and the A/C performed through the summer, but it wasn't cheap.

I am long term renter and owner required 3 estimates. I got five. Richard's was almost the lowest but clearly the best value with many 5-star ratings. A neighbor whose father from N. Caroline is in this business also recommended Richard's. Look no further - installation was done in a day, highly professional - explained very step. Clean up was also outstanding. 5-stars across the board!!

Richards never responded to my inquiry (made via Angie's List website) for a quote for installation of a new air conditioning system. I almost wrote off the non-response, but I am, frankly, fed up and exhausted with the general mediocrity that defines the home services space. Richards is hardly alone in being terrible about communicating with prospects and customers, but that does not make it acceptable. If enough of us complain enough via sites like Angie's List, hopefully the whole industry will get better.

Installation went well. Scheduled to arrive at 8:20, arrived at 9:15. Finished up at 5:15.

We scheduled it right away. Two teams arrived on time and they were done by mid afternoon. So much better then a ten hour day! Clean, polite, quiet and professional. I think they were awesome!

My AC was leaking. Richards came right away and stated that given the age of my furnace and AC I should consider full replacement. I asked about an upgrade to a zone system for my split level home. Instead they recommended a unit with variable speed motor. I needed a replacement immediately so I didn't get bids. Richards replaced my hot water heater in the past and have done other work. This work was priced reasonably so I proceeded with them. The job was completed at my earliest convenient date. I like the new system and the problem of a cold lower level and warm upper level is greatly reduced.

The technician was very professional and arrived on time. He gave me his professional advise that since our house was new we only need to buy the contract which is much less expensive. The contract covers 2 tuning per year.

I have used Richards in the past and was generally happy with their new furnace and heat pump at my old residence. This review is for the service call I had at my current home. I called and spoke to Wayne, who advised that the service call would cost $125. That was higher than many companies charge ($70-$100) but I thought OK. The technician spent about an hour and determined that the furnace was nearing the end of useful service. He handed me a bill for $215. He explained that $125 gets him to my door, then he charges $45 per 30 minutes. I called the office, explained what Wayne had told me, and was told "this is our pricing". I was quoted pricing by Richards to replace the furnace and AC. Richards had the best price, but I went with a different company that was faster in quoting, quicker to answer questions and generally showed that they cared more about getting my business. I spent $11K with them.

Richards Heating & AC installed our furnace, humidifier, and electronic air filter 23 years ago, and all three units are still functioning well.

There was an estimate for a new carrier heat pump. The estimate was fair, but I went with a competitor with a HIGHER estimate, because I was not comfortable with the Richards repairman saying my unit could not be repaired, before even looking at it.
