They were a little pricey but it was well worth the money. They basically took over the project that another contractor botched which was good. They were very responsive in terms of meeting our direct needs, they were timely and persistent. They were just very good and professional. If you are looking for really good work and reliability, they are very good.
Description of Work: Hemphill and Associates did a screened in porch for me.

Decent design and planning but downhill after the first major payment - repeatedly missed deadlines, coordination of subcontractors most often left to homeowner, worst of all the project manager was incompetent and difficult - had to call the owner to get anywhere.

Response from Hemphill & Associates
Response to report: November 19, 2009 We are dismayed and surprised by the comments in the report. The following facts indicate our actual performance: 1. Punctuality: Our contract for construction was signed on October 14, 2008 and it called for a project timetable of 5 months from start to substantial completion. We started the project on time (within one week of the contract signing). They paid the substantial completion draw the last week of March 5 months and one week after we started. That is especially punctual considering that the Owners also added re-finishing of the living floor and a new wood railing on the existing interior stairs in change orders. 2. Quality: I have attached the punch-list that the owners asked us to complete after substantial completion. It comprises some caulking and minor repair items. They have never contacted me with any problems with the final product. In fact, the owners and their neighbors consistently praised the quality of the construction and the professionalism of the carpenters. 3. Price: We designed sequentially 3 completely different designs for this project. Our estimate for the final project scope requested by the owners was $230,000. The contract was $236,000 including design and after they added a few items, for example new exterior trim for the whole house. The final bill was $244,563 reflecting the contract and 5 signed change orders for additional work (a bookcase cabinet, repair of the original sub-floor, re-finishing of the living room flooring, the new stair rail and some electrical work). In fact, he told me when we were going over the contract that I had fulfilled their budget request but they had added to the scope. In terms of value, the cost covered all design and architectural work, a large family room addition, a new kitchen and breakfast room with a added hall and deck, a new front copper-roofed portico, a renovated foyer, relocated dining room with new windows, re-siding of the whole house with cement siding, a new second zone of HVAC in the attic, a partially renovated powder room and new hardwood flooring. 4. Professionalism/Responsiveness: As the comments indicate, when difficulties with the project co-ordination arose, I responded with meetings at the site to resolve the issues. A problem with the flooring sub-contractor did create unnecessary dust and added clean-up for which I am sorry. The project was completed with excellent construction quality after extensive design work requested by the owners on time and within budget. The owners have never paid the final bill after the punch-list was completed and never called us to register any dissatisfaction, I am not sure it is our responsiveness that is in question. 5. Overall: The facts above indicate a very personal and puzzling and grading curve. It is obvious that they had a negative subjective experience. Everyone experiences the process of remodeling differently. After over 20 years in business with more than 350 projects the experience of our other clients has been uniformly positive. We have had many clients who have had us complete multiple projects over the years. We have just completed a fifth project for clients on Inglewood St. in Arlington and a third for a client in McLean. All project documents are available to support the facts presented here. Thank you for the opportunity to correct the record.
