Description of Work: Purchased a Big Deal for 20-man-hours of outdoor labor for $799. Company representative came to my house to review my project list. He expressed confusion when I asked him to perform tasks that are not the company's specialty. Nevertheless, he produced a contract proposal that itemized price per task rather than hours per task. I called to clarify and we decided that I needed to hire a different company for the projects I have in mind.

Hi, The Big Deal had a mistake in the way it was advertised on Angie's List. We no longer run that particular ad. We are sorry for the confusion, let me know if you didn't get a refund please. sincerely, David david@drainageanderosion.com D.E.S.

Description of Work: We purchased a Big Deal coupon for Drainage & Erosion Solutions for $799 (for 20 hours of outdoor work). Ken Fraine came out and gave us an extremely high estimate. We asked him several times if we could get it to a more affordable price point (by having us do some of the labor, provide some materials) but he would not return phone calls or emails for a week. He finally told us he could not depart downward on the figures and suggested we request a refund on our coupon. So we did.

Dear Client, We could not perform the work needed at an even lower price. There may be a company out there that offers cheaper work. I am glad your money was refunded and you received a complimentary evaluation. thank you, David Drainage and Erosion Solutions LLC

Description of Work: Purchased Big Deal on 5/20/2013. Rick from DES called a day or so later to schedule estimate appointment. Rick from DES scoped job on 5/31. Rick from DES provided 4 part estimate for scope of work on 6/12. Angies list member (Jeff Van Dam) responded to email proposal agreeing to one part of the 4 part proposal with conditions based upon answers to proposed questions provided to service provider. To date (as of 6/30 and this writing), have received no return email response from Rick at DES regarding my questions and potential work commencement. Sent email on 6/18 followed up with a phone call to DES main office in Sterling, VA and directly to Rick (project manager/estimator) on (or about 6/25 or 6/25 2013). As of 6/30 (today): NO contact with service provider. I need to find another service provider as I need this work completed soon!

Description of Work: They were not thrilled at the idea of yard clearing and we could not find an agreeable time to install a retaining wall before a new fence is put in. So we are doing it ourselves and honestly they wanted to charge us the whole amount just for yard clearing which we were able to do with a brush hog, 1 person, three hours...not "four people five hours" as they quoted. Additionally we have already gotten the trench for the retaining wall nearly done, two people in two four hour increments...and they were going to charge quadruple. This is not the first retaining wall. I have put in three, one was 30 feet long, dug and installed by myself. So I know approximately how long such a project should take, their estimate for a skilled person to complete the task was way over.

Hi Member, Thank you for the review. The retaining wall and work you described may cost you less to do yourself, you are correct. The material and labor costs are more than $900 for the project you described. thanks again, David Drainage and Erosion Solutions

Description of Work: Company was very responsive to Big Deal purchase - called me same day of purchase. Initial appointment promptly scheduled. We wanted landscape clean-up done. With all the recent rain, company was VERY busy with their primary line of work (Drainage & Erosion), and we had a little challenge with scheduling our job, but they went out of their way to resolve quickly and fit us in. The team was friendly, polite, professional and hard-working. Overall, we are very happy to the work completed.

Description of Work: I explained it above and in my previous email to Angie's list. Contractor promised $1,799 of labor for $799 as a Big Deal. When I received the estimate it was for $1,951 total work, less $799, not less $1,799. When I called them out on it, they tried to blame it on Angie's List and said they were retracting the ad. They offered a $400 discount, a far cry from the $1,000 promised for the "Big Deal" Whatever happened to Truth in Advertising? The came over to provide the estimate on May 30 after a few emails (May 18, May May 26 and May 27) from me prompting them to set up an appointment. They finally set an appointment for May 30. Rick the projec manager was very nice and helpful. However, when I received the estimate and questioned it, that is when they basically reneged on their end of the deal, as detailed above. They told me that Angie's List takes a lot of the money to begin with and that I should get a full refund and then come to them directly to have the work done and receive my $400 discount. We think you should make it right. That's why we signed up with you so we could have a "trusted" partner who provides unbiased opinions and offers deals with no strings attached.

Description of Work: I contacted the service provider after paying for the Big Deal. It took a few days for them to contact me and schedule a visit. The Service Provider was not aware of the big deal terms when they arrived. They only applied the Big Deal as a "prepayment" with no credit given for the 50% discount on services purchased as part of the BIg Deal. I contacted the vendor and they said that Angies List and their company agreed that it was mislisted and we should seek a refund from Angies List.

Description of Work: Our pool is built into the side of a hill, and the rain-water run-off is very heavy. Original drainage could not handle the flow of a heavy rain. Dave put together a solid design and the implementation was very good. We have had NO issues since the work was completed, and Drainage solutions was very diligent to ensure we were happy with all aspects of the project.

Description of Work: I hired Drainage & Erosion Solutions to install a static drain system along 22 feet of the side of my house because, while we have never had any water in the basement, we bought our house seven months ago and the inspector said his meter detected some moisture on one of the basement walls. I took advantage of the "Big Deal" offering an inspection by Drainage & Erosion Solutions to have Dave Robey, who I believe is the owner of the company, to come and check out the problem for us. This cost $98.00. Dave was very professional, explained all my options thoroughly, and because he candidly admitted that the least expensive solution might well take care of my problem I felt he was quite trustworthy; if that solution didn't work it would be easy enough to go back in with a more extensive (and expensive) remediation option. I was charged an additional $1807.00 to install a 22 foot plastic liner against one wall of my house at a depth of 18 inches. I was told that a gentleman named Evan would be the supervisor for my job. The crew showed up on the prearranged date half an hour late, but with D.C. traffic that did not bother me at all. Evan introduced himself and said that his crew would get started and that he would be back soon to check over everything. However, when I left the house less than one hour later, the crew was packing up their tools. There was no sign of Evan, and no one on the crew could (or would) speak English well enough to explain to me what had been done, why what was supposed to be a full-day job had been accomplished in less than an hour, and why they were leaving without the supervisor's having OK'ed the work or even BEEN THERE during the time they supposedly accomplished this task. At length one of the gentlemen handed me a card with Evan's cell phone number on it. I called him and he explained that they'd finished quickly because they'd assigned a larger than normal crew work to on my job (there were four men there) but I was very concerned about the fact that the supervisor was not there, at all, while the work was being done; that I had no idea whether I was getting what I'd paid for; and that no one who did the work could speak English well enough to give me an explanation. His response, and that of the owner, Dave Robey, who subsequently contacted me, was essentially, "You paid top dollar because you wanted the job done right and that's what we do." Well, I can only hope I got what I paid for, and have no idea why what I paid for cost $1800. Dave himself admitted that he'd estimated it would take "two men all day" when he quoted me the $1800 figure, and I don't see how that equates with four unsupervised men digging for less than an hour. I hate to think that the fact we live in NW DC affected his quote, but I'm quite unable to come up with any other explanation, and have no idea what was done or not done. All in all this was a most unsatisfactory experience.

Response from Drainage and Erosion Solutions
This member was a very difficult customer. My name is Dave Robey. I am the DES Sales Manager and I was the consultant on this project. I could tell by the way the member talked to some other workers the day of my initial consultation that she might be a challenge. After doing my initial assessment (using moisture meters, infrared equipment and visually inspecting the basement walls) I reviewed my findings with the member (most of the basement was dry with the exception of one wall that showed evidence of a high moisture reading) I reviewed what her possible options were. I explained that the problem could be addressed with an inside or an outside approach. The wall in question had a mural painted on it and with an inside approach she would lose this as it would have to be covered with waterproofing materials. Outside we had 2 options. One was to do a full excavation down to the level of the basement floor, do extensive work to clean, patch and seal the wall, re-establish the builders drain system and then put it all back together. This project would be very expensive but would carry a warranty against future leaks. I also explained that there was a less expensive approach we could take that would only require excavating down approx. 1.5 ft, installing a thick liner that would essentially be like putting an umbrella under the ground to shield water from getting to the problem wall. I explained that because we would not be doing the full blown job where we are sealing the entire wall I could not extend a warranty but that our policy is that if we do “Plastic Liner System” and there is leak anytime in the next 12 months we will be willing to come back and do the full blown excavation and waterproofing job and I would reduce its price by the amount of the plastic liner job. I recommended this approach and told her if this were my home it is the approach I would take. I recommended that she consult with others if she wanted and that I would put a proposal and email it to her. She asked me to propose the plastic liner approach. My first visit was on 11/7, I sent a proposal on 11/10 and asked her to call me so I could walk her through the details again and get her an install date if she wanted to move forward. On 11/17 I received an email saying “let’s do this” but no phone call. I responded the same day explaining we still needed to talk and that I would need a deposit to move forward. On 12/5 she again sent an email saying she sent in a fax with her cc info for the deposit and wanted one of the install dates I had said were available back on 11/10. I later reached her by phone, informed her that the dates given before were no longer available and she agreed to a later install date that was available. Along the way the member was difficult in many ways whether it be getting accurate cc info. or coordinating Miss Utility’s markings. She was always slow to return calls and emails. We sent a double crew with 2 crew leaders to her job so as to get in and out fast and also assigned an American Project Manager to walk thru the job start because we anticipated her being difficult. Her project was from the beginning explained as a 1 day job but a little unpredictable because we had to work around sprinkler heads and as always some ground digs harder than others. She was rude to my crew and accused them of being illegals (which they are not), she called my Project Manager, was rude to him and made the same accusations also saying that we cheated her. He called me shortly after talking to her telling me she was difficult to talk to and in the middle of trying to discuss the job she hung up on him mad. I told him that I would call her and did immediately call her. I got her voicemail and left a message saying that I had heard she had some complaints and would like to discuss them. After not receiving a return call I sent an email the following day again requesting a call. This was on 2/6. On 2/16 I received a call from the member. She voiced her complaints to me. I let her talk for about 1-2 minutes straight without interruption. When I tried to answer her complaints she became more and more argumentative and rude to me. I explained that I would be glad to discuss these issues with her but it would have to be in a professional manner. At this point she said that she was putting in a bad report on Angie’s list and hung up. Bottom line – We did everything in my opinion that we could to do accommodate and answer the member's questions but the member seems more interested in making baseless complaints and telling people off than actually resolving anything.
