This was a small driveway job but there was a lot of existing broken up concrete to remove before they could get started. They did a fabulous job with the removal (including some existing concrete debris from my garden area for no extra cost). The driveway they put in is beautiful and they actually did a really thorough cleanup - I was really impressed when I got home on day 3 to see it complete with no trash in sight at all. I would highly recommend Custom Stonescaping for your landscaping needs.

I'll start this by saying I'm picky and very, very detail oriented. My husband calls me "the Inspector" because I seriously look at everything from every angle and find any little fault. I continuously have a TON of questions about projects basically from begining to end. If you aren't into reading long reviews, the short version of this is that, being as picky as I am, I would definitely use Jeff and Custom Stonescaping again for any outdoor projects we do. We had already had a few contractors come by prior to Custom Stonescaping. For different reasons, I wasn't overly excited to use any of them for our project. Either cost, style, or responsiveness was an issue. Somehow when we initially made our list of contractors, we had not seen CSS and their great reviews. Thankfully, my husband saw the Angie's reviews and said "let's have them take a look." Immediately after contacting Custom Stonescaping, for an estimate, Jeff was able to meet with us. There was no 2 week wait. He basically said "tell me what works for you and I'll be there." He showed up right on time and full of energy. He took the time to go over the various plans we had come up with based on other contractors and said he'd get back to us with his idea and a price. He came back the next day with an estimate and sketch of ideas for the patio and landscaping! Considering most contractors we spoke with took a couple of weeks to be able to come by, then a few more to come up with a rough idea of a plan, this was amazing! The price was competitive and Jeff worked with us to find an agreeable price for the project. As we went through the process, some things changed. We added in a large mulch area with flagstone steppers and what initially was going to be a small, decorative wall turned into more of a stone retaining wall. He was fair on the cost and was able to incorporated the additional work in during the project. Due to time constraints with us being gone for over a week right after the work was supposed to be complete, Jeff was willing to break the project into to separate components. The walkway/patio/stone walls all were done during the first couple of days. A few weeks later, the remainder of the landscaping and sod went in. Things did keep getting pushed back secondary to weather which was a little frustrating, but Jeff kept us informed and worked with me on a day that I could be here to help oversee the project. I had a very challenging time determining exactly what I wanted as far as plants and landscaping. At the beginning of this process, I had no knowledge of plants at all. I spent probably 200 hours over several months on line and in nurseries trying to gather as much information as I could. Initially, I thought we could just hire someone to come in, explain what our goals were, and they'd do it all. At the end of the day, it just wasn't that simple. We talked with several landscape contractors and were given several plans. Each time, as I'd go through and try to learn about each of the recommended plants, something didn't work. It was a shady spot and a plant that needed sun. Or an area of the yard that stays fairly wet and a plant that was sensitive to root rot. We needed a 50 foot privacy area in the back of the yard, but I needed to try to get coverage with something that we could keep to a 4 foot or so depth due to a future swing set. I can't say that Jeff suddenly came up with "the plan" that made it all work. However, he had some very good suggestions and basically tolerated my 100 emails as I tried to come up with THE PLAN that would work on my own. It's a little problematic when you have an idea of what you ultimately are trying to accomplish, but don't know enough to know what works and doesn't work. Every time I'd come up with a new idea on plants, spacing, etc and asked Jeff his thoughts, he got back to me. I'm sure it was annoying to have such an overly detailed, picky client, but he still was always responsive. Honestly, we were talking fairly seriously with another contractor before finding Jeff, and I think I had so many questions he just stopped responding. If any other customers are like me, I'm sure that contractors get completely bogged down with questions and emails Jeff always got back to me within the day or so and answered my questions. This was HUGE for me. I know I have A LOT of questions, but I also feel like I'm spending a TON of money, so I'm allowed to ask whatever I need to ask. The last thing I want is to spend a bunch of money and wish I had done something different. The crews were awesome that did the work. Jeff came by at the beginning of each day to review things with us and the crew and then would stop by to see how things were going. There was always an english speaking foreman (which with all of my questions and need to have things look a certain way, was extremely important to me). They worked hard all day, each day. They knocked on the door and asked when they had a question or wanted to clarify something. At the end of each day, the yard was cleaned and there was no debris or anything left sitting out. Given that I wanted things done in a very specific way - specific measurements and design for the patio, specific measurements for the planting beds, specific spacing for the plants - I was very happy that I was able to be home for nearly all of the project. While we did spray paint areas, the paint wasn't really visible after the prep work and had I not been here, I'm not sure if things would have been exactly as I wanted. I'm sure they would have been very nice and still been the same general idea, but if you want things done in an exact manner, I would recommend being available during the key parts of the project. The crews were great and very responsive through the days when I had questions and worked with me to make the project go as I hoped. After agreeing on final planting plan, I wanted to make sure that we got a low growing Japanese maple and not a more upright "lollipop" one. Jeff suggested I go to the nursery that supplies the plants for them and tag the maple and any specific plants that I wanted. I had the list we had agreed on and someone at the nursery was kind enough to help me navigate the nursery and she tagged plants for me. While this is not usually how it's done, it was helpful for me to insure that I was able to get the maple that I wanted. It probably wasn't as important with the rest of the plants (a laurel is a laurel is a laurel) but for me, it helped to see what I was getting before everything arrived. The plants have been in the ground for only a couple of weeks. Right now, everything seems ok, but I feel like it's too soon to tell. I'm a little nervous about how cold it got so soon after planting, but hopefully everything will survive the winter and be amazing in the spring. I have read reviews regarding other contractors and plant nightmares from having plants planted improperly. Hopefully, we don't have any issues and with some good water and TLC, all of our plants will thrive! Jeff did agree to warranty the plants, which is not done routinely by many places other than the nurseries. Overall, I'm extremely happy and would use Custom Stonescaping again for any work. I love our yard now and can't wait for sping to get her to enjoy it!

Jeff has a lot of energy. He has a creative streak that I did not see in the other contractors that came out. Hopefully he will post the before and after photos that were taken. He started the project a week before we had agreed because he was available and because his partner happened to be out of town, he had both crews work their magic and finished up in one week. That was just luck that my job coincided during this time period. When I started collecting estimates, I realized I had issues with an existing retaining wall. Rather than propose that I completely demolish it, as others had suggested, he gave the same recommendation that my engineer had suggested so he dug straight down about a foot back and placed landscape fabric, tubing and gravel so that water would drain out since the original structure didn't even have seep holes. Here alone the savings were huge. To replace the wall would have more than exceeded the budget I had for my project. He then drilled seep holes, at my request, and capped a portion of the wall to serve as additional seating for guests. He also connected the drainage to existing drainage lines. Everything was placed out of sight. He also removed the existing caps on the steps and placed 2 inch caps so that it is now safe for my guests to enter and exit from the driveway side. He also placed landscape lighting along the steps to light the way. Originally it was done with, what I would describe as, thinner tile that had cracked and become dislodged and wobbly. One of the steps was placed at an angle that was really steep but when I pointed it out during one of his visits, Jeff had it immediately removed and corrected on the spot. He explained to the workers that the steps did not allow for another placement as it was but that they needed to make sure it was level regardless. The patio is huge and has a curved edge so it is not a square patio. It easily holds a 60 inch round table with 6 chairs, a sectional with seating for 7, a couple of chairs and side table by the waterfall and a fire pit. There is plenty of room for dancing without moving any furniture or for guests to stand and mingle. The landscape lighting is great and the spot lights not only point light at certain trees included in his plan and the waterfall but they light up the massive trees in my heavily wooded yard. The flagstone is tennessee tan and everyone has commented that they love this color compared to the traditional grays of most patios. Jeff suggested the color indicating it would be a great match with the existing retaining wall and steps. He wanted to preserve the wall and steps as it tied in the old with the new. Color is what helped tie it all together along with the color of the brick of our house. My yard has a steep slope so there was plenty of fill and a retaining wall made of huge rocks piled high and giving a structure so the patio would be held in place. The alternative would have been a traditional retaining wall that would not appear as organic as it currently does since the same rocks were also used to make the waterfall. If you are familiar with infinity pools, I refer to my deck as an infinity deck because it just disappears in the forest. It is obviously higher than the massive trees further out in the yard. He also made sure the majority of the plants were deer resistant since I back up to a forested area. The only glitch is that I specifically asked for the tags on the plants so I knew what was planted and he mentioned he did that on all the jobs. When I asked the workers for the tags, they told me they were all thrown away. I also have one spot light at the top of the steps that has yet to be connected. The wire was coiled and left detached and laying on the soil. The area he created is like having another dining room and living room added to the house. We look forward to entertaining many friends and I have already enjoyed the space with my family who begs to eat outside, even if it just the regular dinners we would normally have at the kitchen table. We just walk our plates outside. On the weekends, if they have homework, they take over the space. I recommend Jeff because he is really professional and can help you make a wonderful space. A space that will exceed your expectations.
Description of Work: Worked on (1) existing retaining wall, (2) large flagstone patio (3) pondless waterfall feature (4) landscape lighting (5) landscaping (6) stone path and (7) repaired existing steps from driveway to patio.

We were very impressed with Jeff Reynolds. He arrived for our appointment on time and was very professional. Since we were unsure exactly how curved we wanted the walkway to be, Jeff offered some suggestions on the design of the curve. He also asked if we wanted the dead grass removed and the lawn seeded. I indicated that I planned to do the grass myself and he indicated that since he would have to remove the large stepping stones and grade much of the yard in order to install the new paver walkway, he would also give us a quote for removing all the dead sod and grading the entire yard plus add some topsoil and seed. Jeff estimated that it would probably take about 2 days for the job. He then went back to his truck and provided a written quote within 15 minutes. The quote was very reasonable compared to one we had received from another provider in the spring. Moreover, the added cost to remove the dead sod, grade the entire yard and add topsoil was cheaper than what it would have cost me to have topsoil delivered by a nursery. It took several more days to get the remaining quotes and Jeff kept in email contact with us to confirm that he could still do the job within the next 2 weeks if we were able to make a decision within a few days, otherwise he would probably be booked til January with larger projects. We made a commitment to do the project on a Tuesday and Jeff started the job the following Tuesday. Jeff arrived at the time he indicated and did a rough outline of the curved walkway for us to OK. He listened to our opinion and made some modifications, which we thought would work better for us. We also asked Jeff if his crew could remove grass sod from the side of the house that I had killed in addition to the dead sod in the front yard, even though we did not originally ask to have this done. He indicated that he would and that he could adjust the final cost. Jeff had a three man crew arrive shortly after he did and they did all the work on the project which took a little over 2 days. The work crew was fantastic. The foreman discussed all aspects of the walkway preparation and made sure we were OK with the final design of the curve for the walkway before they finished laying the pavers and cutting the curve of the walkway. The workmen also made several suggestions regarding modifications for the part of the walkway that curved around the bed of bushes and plants along the side of the house next to the driveway. All the modifications that they suggested were great including adding a little stone curb between the walkway and plant bed, which was not in our original plan. When the project was finished with the modifications suggested by the workmen, the walkway look better than we even imaged it would. Before leaving the workmen did a great job in cleaning up and made sure that the project looked finished. The project was completed Thursday morning and we immediately started receiving constant positive comments from all our neighbors on how fantastic the walkway and front yard looked. To our surprise, when Jeff contacted us the day after the project was finished in order to ask if we liked the results, he indicated that there would be no additional charge for the extra work that was done on the project since it did not require any additional materials and only a little additional work time. We would like to reiterate that we are extremely please with the work that Jeff Reynolds and his company Custom Stonescaping did for us. We will definitely try to use his company for possible future projects and we have no reservations about recommending him to our friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: My wife and I had a new curved walkway installed from the front of the house to the sidewalk with a side curve walkway to the driveway and along the side of the house next to the drive. We decided to use Techoblock pavers to match the patio at the back of the house. This project required removing a very old stepping stone walk and some repairing of the brick steps leading up to the front porch. We also had the old grass sod, which I had killed with RoundUp, removed from the front yard and the yard graded and some top soil added. We selected 4 providers from Angie's list who had good ratings and asked for bids. Three gave us quotes and we selected the quote from Jeff Reynolds at Custom Stonescaping since his quote was one of the 2 lowest and he indicated that if we decided within a few days he could squeeze in our small project within the next 2 weeks, whereas the second lowest bidder could not start until after Thanksgiving.

We had multiple quotes to do a retaining wall in the back that would give us more yard space. They removed a bunch of shrubs, ornamental grasses, and trees. We had some trees re-located. The retaining wall runs along the whole back of our house. They did a beautiful job on that. They also took out all the grass and mulch, and re-graded before putting down sod. I have two minor complaints about this.... one, the grading was overall good, but there is still an are that gets a little soggy. However, this may not be something we could control with grading. We might need a different drainage solution. The other thing is that the sod was great, but I wish they would have put down some better soil under it. We had to do a lot of work to get the grass all the nutrients it needed. These are tiny things, based on the scale of the whole project. It looks gorgeous, and almost a year later, it's still perfect. I love going out on my deck and looking out across the yard. Jeff was very responsive and his team was professional. They did the job in the time they said and worked hard to clean up and put everything back in order. I would definitely recommend them to someone else, and will call on them again when we are ready to do our front steps.

I was in the market for a new ground deck and upgrade to landscaping to transition my backyard to a Japanese garden theme. I interviewed several contractors for the deck and contractors for the landscape. However, Custom Stonescaping was the only company that offered the ability to combine these requirements into one effort, thereby saving me time and money as well as providing continuity on the project. Working in conjunction with Clifton Contracting, another outstanding company, Custom Stonescaping was able to give me the yard of my dreams. Jeff thoroughly understood what I was going for in my yard and offered valuable advice for the design. His team was thorough, efficient and worked well with me to create the landscaping I wanted. The two walkways absolutely punctuate the beautiful deck that Clifton Contracting built. I expect to use both companys again.

Custom Stonescaping was one of 8 companies I called in to do estimates on doing a complete overhaul of my backyard. Their price was very competitive and Sean was always prompt and upfront on scope of work and making sure the backyard turned out well. I didn't feel nickel and dimed as slight changes were made from the initial quote. The work took a total of 3 hot summer days where a 4-5 man crew removed the old patio, regraded the backyard and finally laid the new flagstone patio and walkway along with new steps to stoop. The product was a complete transformation from my old backyard, and they did a good job adding finishing touches to yard like mulch and river stone in some areas. Sean made sure I was happy with job before they considered the work was complete.
Description of Work: Demolished existing patio and steps, installed flagstone patio and walkway on top of new gravel, added techo-block Rocka steps, and add added flagstones to concrete stoop.

It went amazingly well. Jeff and his team are very nice to work with and Jeff always has good ideas to improve upon mine. His team of five men arrived around 8 am and worked till 6 pm, completing this job all in one day. We used Jeff and his team in November to install a new patio with pavers and to remove the ivy against the house. I could have shopped around more for a cheaper price, but the overall pleasant experience of working with Jeff and his team is worth the extra money to me. Jeff's team also did an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves and even hosed the mulch debris off of our driveway. I am glad to have a reliable go-to company for my landscaping needs. I highly recommend Custom Stonescaping.
Description of Work: A large amount of ivy was removed from our yard and they took care of its disposal, too. The entire area was then mulched and seeded with grass seed designed for the shade. A gravel path 12" wide was installed along the back of our house and down the side of our house where mulch had been to prevent potential termite damage. They also kindly trimmed off a few tree branches and filled in the patio they had installed in November with sand between the pavers. They remulched the pachasandra they had installed in November and remulched all around the patio.

I called Jeff on May 3rd to get a little bit information and try to set up a time for further conversation. He told me to email him and he would get back to me. I emailed but didn't hear from him for a few days. I emailed again on May 7th to make sure he got the first email. He confirmed he did receive the email and ask whether I could meet during the day. I was at work so I suggested meeting at 6pm the next day or find another day if 6pm didn't work for him. I didn't hear from him again until May 15th. I emailed him again saying I was disappointed that he didn't follow up and he first claimed he didn't receive my email on May 3rd, he then blaimed me not calling him directly as he was too busy to check emails. I thought he preferred email as he didn't want to talk over the phone when I called him the first time. Anyway, we emailed back and forth a few times after I got mad to understand what happened and why he didn't email or call. It is a very strange experience as I have done anything I could have done to give him time to response and not make a bid deal about it. But it didn't help. I would think any business should follow up on leads in a professional manners. The customer is not the one that should chase him down several times to just get him to come over and see my yard and get a quote.
Description of Work: Trying to get him to come over my place for an assessment, a design or a quote. We are planning to have a full lanscaping as we just moved into the house and there is not much done on the yard yet. Nothing was performed as I couldn't get a timely response from him.

Custom Stonescaping was one of 8 companies I contacted for an estimate and design proposal to replace my concrete front walkway. Four of the 8 visited my home promptly on the date and time we scheduled. Custom Stonescaping was not one of the four. For Custom Stonescaping I spoke with Jeff Reynolds, who identified himself as the owner, on the phone. Rather than offering to visit while I was home, as the 4 others did, he said he would visit when he could, take pictures, and then call me to discuss the job requirements and options. I was open to that approach, but I never heard from him again. I was happy with the professionalism all of the 4 who visited my home and provided estimates/proposals. I selected 1 to do the work. The comments in this review are honest and well supported by my detailed records.

Response from Custom Stonescaping LLC
I spoke with this potential client over the phone. Our schedules were both super busy for a personal estimate right away, so instead we decided to allow me to come by and see the site when I could fit it into my work day. Within a few days I personally visited the site, took digital photos and measurements, and prepared an email estimate with options of the possible solutions we could provide for him. I never received any follow up to the quotes. Perhaps he decided to not do the work, went with another bid, or simply didn't even receive my email (which can and does rarely happen). As a contractor sometimes you never hear from a potential client again for a thousand different reasons. I'm not sure why I was given an "F" rating, considering we were never actually hired to do anything, and as far as I knew provided as much of a proposal as possible. I wonder if the potential client even hired one of the 8 companies? Were the other 7 companies all given "F" ratings? Considering my stellar ratings on Angie's List, this feedback seems odd.

Jeff had a better vision of what would work well for our patio than we did. He made several helpful recommendations and is passionate about his work. His crew works as a team and they worked very hard at this job as it was extremely labor intensive. They were polite and pleasant to work with. We spent more than we had planned on this project yet realized the importance of having it completed by such a capable company. I especially like that he sent all his insurance and license information along with his patio plan. I will recommend him to all my neighbors and friends and will gladly hire him and his team in the future.
Description of Work: Our old brick patio and rotted wooden ties that surrounded it were removed and replaced with pavers. English ivy growing along the side of the house was removed and pachysandra was planted there. The gutter drainage was piped further into the yard and away from the house. Some brick steps on the side of the house were replaced with nice stone steps. The patio was surrounded by a thick border of mulch.

We chose Custom Stonescaping, LLC because of its consistently high ratings and ranking as one of Angie's Lists premium contractors. Our experiences met or exceeded our expectations throughout the project on every level. Shortly after contacting Jeff, he called us back - on the weekend - and arranged to meet with us - that day - to brainstorm some of our ideas and provide us with a design. After he arrived, he listened carefully to our overall vision of removing part of our driveway leading to our detached garage, solving sloping and drainage challenges, and building a stone patio that covered the space between the back door and our detached garage, side fence and transitional designs between the patio and the backyard and a step-down stacked stone design transitioning from the patio to the rest of the driveway facing the street. He immediately visualized what we wanted and filled in the gaps by discussing solutions as well as telling us what would and would not work. He made suggestions that simplified the project (saving us money) as well as steering us away from ideas we had that were unrealistic, unnecessary, and short-sited due to our inexperience and limited knowledge of the many details involved. He never hesitated to tell us if he though our idea(s) were bad and followed up by thoroughly explaining options that were easy to see - and for which we were grateful. Our impression and growing confidence in him developed quickly. He has an exceptional eye for design; blending the art and science of his craft. We got the since that he was very organized and that his primary objective was to provide the best quality product and service. His business approach was old-fashioned as I remember it when people built a reputation on quality and reputability instead of going for the quick buck by taking short cuts, pulling "bait and switch" techniques, up-selling, and other sleazy tactics. These were absent. Our impression was that his calendar was packed with customers and that he didn't need to resort to tactics many other contractors might have done to win our business. We signed a contract with him the same day he came out and gave him a 50% deposit. He promised he would come out and do the job sometime in June and that he'd complete the job in two (2) days. I cut down some bushes, limbs, shrubs, etc., and ended up having about 6 cubic yards of yard debris piled on the area where he would be working. I bought one of those "Bagsters" which filled about a third or my debris, then learned that Bagster couldn't get to my bag because of overhead power-lines. I was concerned that I'd be stuck with an expensive add-on given the extra work I had created for Jeff and my need to remove this so he could start work. I called Jeff to tell him that I had created extra removal/cleanup work for him and asked how much he would charge to take out this extra debris so it wouldn't interfere with his schedule - also I didn't want to leave him with any surprises that would impact our project. He responded, "how about 'free'?" I was taken aback that he didn't take this opportunity to up-sell me or nickel and dime me with added expenses as I would have ordinarily expected. One week before his anticipated start date, his crew arrived - first thing in the morning. I watched as Jeff organized his workers, setup the work site, outline the patio and communicate our needs. It was obvious that he and his crew are used to working together like clockwork. I liked that he had a stable crew he had a long-time working relationship with rather than a bunch of contractors who come and go and reflect poorly on contractors, their company, reputation, business since, etc. His crew immediately started working; breaking up the driveway, sawing through concrete and asphalt, stacking stones, spreading gravel, spreading gritty sand, pounding it down and readying it for the Pennsylvania stone we ordered. They began cutting and carefully laying the stone - each stone leveled by hand. These stones were 2-3" thick. They laid them out with beautiful precision. It took them another day to finish laying the stones down exactly and evenly. Where the patio dropped off to the remaining driveway, they built a stacked stone look that can only be described as elegant. They built a fire pit of stacked stone and placed steps made from large stones transitioning from the patio to the back yard. They dug up a trench and laid a drainage pipe. the strip of grass they removed was so expertly removed, that they were about to lay it back onto the ground seamlessly. Not one blade of grass was out of place. They mixed rich gardening soil and filled in where the flower beds will be. They placed stacked stone around the crawl space under our house and by a vent built into the side of our house. They served as necessary yet, beautiful additions. They chose beautiful stones throughout. They swept and cleaned up the area. We had a party planned for that night, so they worked late - right up to the party - finishing the patio completely. Our guests were amazed at the level of design and quality - and speed at which the men worked. I forgot to mention that during Jeff's final inspection - he (not us) noticed that three stones had small scratches on them on both sides. He removed them and had his men cut replacement pieces for them so that the resulting patio was flawless. Hiring Custom Stonescaping, LLC more than paid for the price of joining Angie's List. I would never have been able to weed through the plethora of landscaping services out there, and Jeff is, if not the best contractor on every level, certainly in the top 1%. We plan to hire him in a year or less to completely redo our slate front porch and steps including stone path leading to the sidewalk - a project that will likely cost twice as much as what we spent on the patio. We won't think twice about doing it. We are looking at developing a barren area behind our garage to include a waterfall, stacked stone and other features as well such as stacked stone, stone bench(s), landscaping, etc. Our only concern is that we will have to be put on a very long waiting list as Jeff is probably in high demand - or will be very soon. If there was a way for me to place photos of the completed project - or videos I took from my cell phone while they were working, I would. Words can only describe the quality that we got - and I took about 12 pictures from every angle that I plan to send to friends who want to do a similar patio after seeing Jeff's work. In conclusion, I can't think of a better contractor experience we have ever had and we've gone through many in the past few years since we've converted our modest cape code into a 5 bedroom home, new bathrooms, new large kitchen, porch, second story, etc.. We plan to live here our whole lives and very much rely on reviews so we can reduce our chances of hiring a contractor that doesn't measure up to the level of professionalism and quality we had with Custom Stonescaping. Great work, fair price, quick execution, top-shelf products and an experienced crew of artisans led by a highly creative, intelligent visionary leader. High marks all around!

The project went well after overcoming some minor grading issues. The original design we asked for would not work; however, we did not realize it up until the end of the project. We were provided with a couple of suggestions and work with the owner to solve the problem. We actually like the finished design better than what we first were expecting.
Description of Work: We had a random 2 inch flagstone patio installed, approximately 300 Sq feet. The crew was very professional and met all of our needs. The work area was left clean and with very minor traces of any work being done. The owner was VERY responsive to all requests and questions.

Very well. The workers were all very professional and friendly, and worked very quick. Demolition went smoothly and no debris was left in our yard. We asked for some changes when part of the plan did not turn out the way we thought and they implemented changes quickly and professionally (involved moving a number of large stones). Jeff was the person who worked with us on design, and we got our firepit and water feature to fit in our small yard without taking away too much grass. Only major concern I had is that they put in several small trees, one of the trees died and had to be replaced, and the other is still not very strong. When I took out the tree that died, I found that it had been put in without removing the canvas around the root ball. Same was true for the tree that is still struggling. I have removed the canvas as much as I can, but it is a very large tree and I am unable to simply lift it up and remove the canvas... I think this was simply an oversight, and it should not be considered representative of their work elsewhere in the yard, which was excellent.
Description of Work: Contractor demolished and removed two mismatched stone patios, then levelled area, installing one uniform bluestone patio, put matching bluestone on steps down to basement, removed an old chain link fence, installed a firepit and a water feature, and stonescaped and landscaped back fence line garden, replacing old railroad beams with boulders and stone. Also put in a bluestone area in front of shed, and put in heavy stones to serve as walkway in side yard, through garden. Put in low level lighting system as well.

The job was completed in January which made everyday tasks difficult; trying to excavate frozen ground, no water to work with, staying warm, shorter days, and in some cases finding materials. The crew was very professional and I was taken care of and never felt taken advantage of either. The crew worked during snow days too. I found their work ethics courteous and very professional too.
Description of Work: I called Jeff at Custom Stonescaping to assist me with my very boring backyard. Jeff's Custom Landscaping transfrormed both front and back yard into a landscape that my family could entertain in. I get compliments all the time from my neighbors. They are all very envious too. The new backyard incorporated several new flagstone patios, a firepit, bench walls, stepping stone paths, boulders, and retaining walls. The entire yard was tilled and 3,500 sf of new sod was installed. The front yard had a smaller stone wall to match the backyard, with flowers, shrubs and mulch.

Jeff and his crew had removed a deck and constructed a natural stone patio, including a dry riverbed, last summer (2009). During one of the snowstorms last winter, we suffered damage (necessitating removal) to a row of 40' Leyland Cypress trees that formed a green border along our property line. We contacted Jeff to replace the Leyland Cypress trees, expand the patio and do some landscaping in our front yard. He was extremely helpful and flexible in accomodating our desires. His crew arrived exactly as promised and completed the project in an efficient, timely manner. They were very careful to limit any chance of damage to my property. This was our second use of Custom Stonescaping. Jeff has a true knack for accomodating his design to fit existing constraints. We are challenged by significant runoff through our back yard from thunderstorms. We had gotten estimates from other landscape designers who wanted to solve the drainage issue by installing an elaborate French drain system (huge excavation, multiple drains, $30,000 just for the drainage system). Jeff's solution was a much more elegant design that uses a dry riverbed which solves the drainage issue and very nicely breaks up the patio into two separate spaces connected by a stone bridge.
Description of Work: Expand existing patio and plant trees.

We did return his call to tell him that we do not work west of Reston. We are based in Falls Church and tend to work within that radius. I am sorry he did not receive that information, but judging by our feedback we obviously do good work.

Team arrived day earlier than scheduled (a good thing), removed all old plants, neighbor wanted one of the trees that was going so team replanted it in her yard, ground was tilled. Work stopped when rain came. Day 2, team came back, stonescaping began in earnest, old patio removed. Day 3, stonescaping completed, rock-scaping completed, new trees/shrubs planted, lighting installed. Day 4, final inspection, lighting adjusted, taught us how to care for all of our new plants. Pros: excellent efficiency, excellent professionalism while working, excellent clean up, even used the leftover mulch to "clean up" our areas in the front yard - they hadn't even been commissioned to work in the front yard!! Layout of the backyard better than expected, final product outstanding. Cons: expensive but worth it!

Jeff was most helpful. He checked in on the staff to see that all was going well. We were constantly in contact about any delays. There was a delay due to the snowy weather but nothing can control that issue. The outcome? A lovely backyard. All my neighbors give me compliments on the yard. Next step? The front yard.
Description of Work: My backyard was a disaster. A huge blank lot, 3/4 acre, with so much potential that I needed Stonescaping LLC to assist me with this job. The new backyard now has two new flagstone patios, a firepit, bench walls, stepping stone paths, boulders, and retaining walls. The entire yard was tilled and 3,500 sf of new sod was installed. It is absolutely beautiful. Thanks Jeff.

Delighted to write about such a good crew, they deserve the best. I have interviewed several Hardscape companies being one to work with top individuals. The proposal saved us time and money and was explained to us in very intelligent steps from start to finish. Detail oriented, all of my concerns were addressed and taken care of. I previewed other projects on site, visited their showroom, picked the stones I wanted. We were given the information to hire real professionals. The job started. On time. Finished on time. And it looks exactly as expected. And all questions were pleasantly answered along the project, all crew speaks English. Our community operates with strict guidelines and they were very careful to protect all working areas. Even neighbors commented. The owners, very present. A detail but they show up with clean trucks, clean uniform tops, perfect fit for an upscale community. Here is the best part. We had a few hick-ups during the project, they pointed out the problems to us and we were able to fix them all. We own a new property and they were all pre-construction phase issues handled by the builder. Custom Stonescaping adjusted well to this extra phase of the project and offered excellent and generous follow-up. Overall, a company who cares. And wants your satisfaction. A++ no less.

We originally contacted the company to build a waterfall in our backyard. We saw good reviews on Angie's list. One of the owners came to the house to provide an estimate. Suggested that he could provide a much broader service -- removing all of the existing work and replacing it with new patio walls, re-landscaping with new stones and plantings, our existing beds. They work began on time but in very rainy conditions. No accommodations were made because of the wet conditions even though we questioned this. The yard (grass) was severely damaged by the use of heavy equipment and they did little or nothing to repair the damage. We are still struggling to recover from that damage. They caused significant damage to our driveway by insisting on placing a dumster in our driveway instead of on the street. No preparation was made for the dumster and upon removing it we were left with significant driveway damage. Their answer was patchwork repair which remains unsightly. New planting was a significant part of the project. We were told that the plants would be brought in and before they were planted we would review them and discuss and approve. Instead we arrived home to find everything planted. The plants were poorly chosen, positioned and planted. Several have died. The work damaged some of her existing plants including a Japanese maple and redbud. When the waterfall stopped working within 3 weeks of installation it took 10 days to get them to return our phone calls. It took additional days for them go come look at the problem. Subsequently, the waterfall ceased operating properly - they did not respond to our inquiry and we instead retained the services of another more competent company that repaired and rebuilt the waterfall. It turns out that the connection from the pump to the hose had never been properly secured. We also learned that the bed for the pond had been improperly prepared. As the plants began to die we could not get a response even though the contract specified that anything would be replaced within a year. Only when we threatened a poor review did they respond and replaced a few but not all of the plants that were dead or dying. They clearly no little or nothing about plants and we question their qualifications as landscapers. In short, they were eager to take our money and once they had left the property with their last payment showed no inclination or desire to address any of their mistakes and failures. Do not hire these people>

The grass was amended and over seeded at the time of the job with oro-gro grass seed and starter fertilizer. After a few weeks the lawn looked amazing. The driveway was professionally repaired by a reputable asphalt company after the dumpster driver was too aggressive pulling the dumpster out. We installed over 100 plantings based on the original design, owners wishes, lighting needs and drainage requirements. Several plants did not make it and were replaced for free. When I was called about a possible faulty pond pump I simply asked the owners to check the outlet as it is a GFCI. They said the outlet was fine. I arrived to find the pump was in fact working, the GFCI outlet was tripped. I reinstalled the pump and even gave them a new spare pump for free. One thing the owners failed to mention is I built an extra storage patio to hold a log rack, for free, because I thought that it was needed. They wanted a large storage log holder built for free as well, after they liked the patio. I explained that would be an additional charge but I would be glad to price it and build it for them if they desired. The owners seemed to be irritated about that leading to a general "glass is now half empty" attitude about all of the work. Ultimately the grass looked fantastic (when given time to grow), the plants were replaced for free, the pond pump was fine and a free spare pump was left for future use, but because I didn't build a $4,000 project for free I was given a bad review.

Overall, this was great! Jeff Jones said the crew would be at the house by 7:00AM; they arrived right on time and instantly began to view the work zone, pull out the supplies, and form their plan of attack! The forecast called for heavy rain in the afternoon so therefore, the crew wanted to be sure to cut out and lay out the patio stones in order to get the patio set prior to the rain...I've never seen such teamwork, and such hard work! They pulled the patio together in record time! The rains started and I expected them to head for their trucks but no way, they started planning out where the plants and flowers were going to be planted! Then, they started digging holes and burying the plants they could! They made sure that the patio was holding up to the heavy rains and put in a full day - ensuring everything was secure and ready for the next day. The next day called for heavy rain yet again, they showed up, and completed planting everything remaining. When I came home from work that day, the job was done; I discovered that they'd planted a tree in from of a hidden under-area shed and called to ask if they could move the tree; they said no problem, they were due to be out on a job the next day and would be sure to stop by/before or after to move the plant. As promised, they stopped by and moved the plant without any question. This job was very well organized and they crew was very professional.
Description of Work: We had been shopping around for estimates to build and install a patio and overall landscaping for the entire backyard. We contacted Jeff and made an appointment for a Sunday afternoon. He arrived on the time promised and walked with us as we shared what we were thining about. He said he'd like to spend some time, measuring and walking around and thinking and would then go to the truck and lay out a plan. Sure enough, about 30 - 45 minutes later, Jeff knocked on the door and presented an incredible lay out. He uniquely shaped the patio, defined a grassy area for the pdog and bordered the yard and patio with a variety of perennials. The plan he presented was in color, which allowed us to really better sense how things would look upon completion. Most landscapers don't leave behind their plan; however, Jeff Jones said it was ours to keep. At the same time he presented the plan, he shared the insurance information, a written estimate - breaking down the cost, his licensing information and information on other jobs performed. We were incredibly pleased and wanted a couple of weeks to think through things; we called Jeff Jones a couple of different times, asking questions about the plan. He was always very considerate and when we asked about adding a plant, he was certain he'd be able to pick one like it up and install it. When we decided to go with the plan, he asked us to put in the start and end dates in the contract (we negotiated such while talking) and then mail a copy, along with our deposit.
