Description of Work: FERNANDO AND A HELPER CAME TO OUR HOUSE WITHIN THE TIME FRAME PROMISED AND CONDUCTED A VERY THOROUGH INSPECTION OF OUR FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY, FOLLOWED BY A COST ESTIMATE FOR REPAIRS. ALTHOUGH VERY PROFESSIONAL AND INFORMATIVE, THE COST ESTIMATE FOR REPAIRS WAS QUITE A BIT HIGHER COMPARED TO OTHER LIKE COMPANIES' ESTIMATES THAT OFFERED THE SAME SERVICES. AS SUCH WE CHOSE TO GO WITH ANOTHER COMPANY.

Description of Work: Winston's had been servicing my chimney for 20-odd years uneventfully and reasonably. Then ownership changed. A camera inspection on a routine service visit revealed what Winston's described as an "irregularity" on the interior of the chimney. The technician said that it was unlikely that we would notice this in regular use, and we had encountered no usage problems. The main office at Winston's quoted us $9,000 to rebuild the chimney. No alternative solutions were offered, even though we requested them. The company rep did call to "reassure" us that we could have "confidence" in the $9,000 quote. We scheduled a second inspection with Winston's to validate the first set of results, but Winston's never showed up. Because chimney standards are becoming more rigorous, we have since been exploring chimney inspection/maintenance options with other companies. We have not settled on a final service provider, but I can report that *no one else* has said that we needed our chimney rebuilt and the prices that we have been quoted have yet to reach $9,000. Thanks, new Winston's ownership! You lost a 20 year customer and earned yourself a justifiably poor review.

 + -1 moreThey arrived early and completed the job in less than an hour. They inspected inside and out. They were very professional and helpful. I told them that two years ago when another company inspected and cleaned our chimney, we were told we needed to install chimney liners at a very high cost (about $2500-$3000). That company repeatedly called to encourage us to do the work on the chimney - warning that it might be unsafe to use the fireplace without doing the very costly work. The men from Winston's told me the chimney was in good condition and we didn't need the chimney liner. I am no expert on chimneys but I suspect the first company was not honest with us. I am glad I got a second opinion from Winston's.

 + -1 moreExcellent. They told me my chimney was in good shape, did not need to be rebuilt but said there was a problem with the flashing. They did not try to convince me to do any additional work. Winstons put silicone along the area where the flashing meets the roof but said the flashing was the roofer's responsibility--we replaced our roof 3 years ago--and the roofer doesn't want to assume responsibility.
Description of Work: Inspection to find cause of leak from chimney and determine what repairs need to be done.

 + -1 moreI explained to the two gentlemen that I had received an estimate for recommended repairs from another company and wanted to have them verify the need for the repairs. After their inspection, the representative told me what he had found and was very helpful in explaining the chimney operation and answering my questions. He also told me that there was no need for repairs presently, but that I should have them inspected every 1-2 years to make sure that they didn't deteriorate. He also recommended carbon monoxide detectors as a good indicator of improper chimney function. He could have easily recommended chimney repairs that would have been quite costly knowing that another company already had and I would have been forced to spend a large amount of money unnecessarily. I appreciated their honesty, professionalism, and spending the time to answer all my questions thoroughly. I highly recommend Winston's based on this experience.

 + -1 moreA different chimney maintenance company told me it needed $8,000.00 worth of repairs. I am an architect so I know it was an outright lie. Winston's inspected and declared the chimney safe, and gave me a list of recommended maintenance to do in Spring, 2007 for under $1200.00. The showed up on time, did what they said they were going to do, charged a small amount, and did the work quickly and efficiently. I will absolutely have them back to do the maintenance in the spring.

 + -1 moreOverall we were pleased. After doing their evaluations, they cleaned our chimney for the season. They were very neat and efficient. They noticed we had some bricks that needed to be replaced on our chimney and gave us an estimate on that, however, it was not a "hard sell" - this needs to be repaired asap. Their price was also fairer than a prior quote we had gotten. They also suggested we contact a roofer for the problems with our roof. They were also considerate of the fact that we have four cats in the house. We would be happy to use them again.
Description of Work: We first had them look at a leak we have on our ceiling near our chimney to see if it was chimney or roof related. They checked out our chimney, attic, and roof to determine the problem. They also checked our furnace area to be sure that was fine. Lastly, they cleaned our chimney. All in they were very efficient and thorough.

They were even careful about not letting my cat out of the house. I was very impressed. It is probably the only time that I have had work done in my house that I have had such a pleasant experience.

 + -1 moreAfter another chimney company recommended a $1500 repair (installing a new liner in our furnace and water heater chimney), I decided to get a second opinion. The Winston's crew said they didn't think such a replacement was necessary and made adequate repairs for one tenth of the cost! Unheard of! I am very, very pleased. They were courteous, friendly, and quick. One negative: they showed up early without calling, but luckily I was home.
