We purchased a front door several years ago and the sweeper on the bottom of the door came off. I went to Window Man to have them order a replacement part which they did. They replaced the part at no expense to us. It was nice to see a merchant stand behind their service.

I had a salesperson come out and give me an estimate for my windows. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and not pushy. We spent a while thinking about it, and they were down to the final two companies that we were thinking we would use. I was curious about other brands of windows, since they bill themselves as the educational window company. The salesperson was really uninterested in answering my questions! I sent him an email, and he took three days to reply with a one sentence response. I don't know if this is due to the fact that we were looking for something pretty budget-friendly. I just thought it was strange that the "educational window company" really didn't want to tell me about any other windows. We went with another company and were quite satisfied.

It was wonderful. They have excellent product and also excellent team of people to work with. We love the product and we really researched and looked a lot of different windows. We were able to go to their showroom and see it to compare it with other things we have seen. The salesman was wonderful and not high-pressured. He's just very informative. The team of people who came for installation was just wonderful that you can tell exactly that they know what they were doing and they were very neat about everything. They cover their feet every time they walk through my house. Everything looks great and I had no problems at all.
Description of Work: They replaced all the windows in our house. They did 10 windows and 2 in the basement.

I had been looking for solutions for soundproofing my windows which face a heavily trafficked street for a while, and contemplating various expensive and complicated solutions. The job was complicated by a huge picture window -- another company had told me they couldn't make storm windows big enough to cover it. I'm glad I found the Window Man. They sent a specialist out to give me an estimate, and he explained my options -- primarily two different thicknesses of Mon-Ray noiseblocking storm windows that would go over over my existing windows. It took about a month for the windows to be custom made, and the installation went smoothly. I could hear my room getting quieter as the windows went up. They did a great, no-fuss job of installing the windows, and they have made a noticeable differerence in the sound levels coming in from outside.

They did an excellent job of installing the windows and we are very pleased with the new windows. Our biggest complaint is with the cleanup. They must have dropped one of the old windows out of the side of our house, where it shattered, because we found large shards of glass all over our lawn and in our bushes below one of the bathroom windows. Fortunately, we do not have small children running in the grass or it would have been a disaster. We also found broken remnants of our old window frames around the outside of the house for weeks after the work was done. Installation was great, but cleanup was horrible.

The windows were delivered and installation began in April 2010. During the removal of the old windows, one of the installers dropped something from the third floor outside and it broke the glass dome of the electric meter....I heard glass break but and went and checked upstairs to see what happened....and the installers acted like nothing had happened. Halfway through the installation, the installers indicated that there was something wrong with the new windows and that news one would need to be re-ordered. And I asked what was wrong with the new windows....they were warped and being defective would void the warranty. So, they finished the install and sprayed in expanding foam around the window openings but did not put the casings on as they were just temporary. And so began the window saga. The spray foam was inconsistently sprayed and didn't expand correctly. In the mornings, I could see daylight through the sprayfoam...and there were areas that were opened to the elements. It was a particularly buggy year and I had lots of bugs in my bedroom. The installers left and said they would contact me when the new windows arrived...about a month later - in May 2010, I was contacted - they came to install the windows and uh-oh - the new windows were also defective.....so, yup - you guessed it - another window order. They took the new windows back to the warehouse and said "we'll be in touch". If you recall from above, the initial installation was incomplete and temporary. May turned into June, then July. I began making phone calls to the company....they indicated that the windows were on order but hadn't arrived. First it was the issues with the company located in Ohio, then the issue was the windows were ready but waiting for pickup in Ohio by a trucking firm. Then there was a delay in the shipping because of a truck strike - or something similar. Then the gal said that it was a partial delivery because they were waiting on Window ballast that were not shipped with the windows.... hmmm, window ballasts? My windows are casement not double hung. This was early August 2010. The gal said she would contact me to arrange date for installation.....late August/early September - I called the company again and the gal said "your job is completed"....and I said no it isn't. I'm waiting for the third re-order on windows that supposed to have been installed in April....(light-bulb moment). She rechecked the paperwork...turns out that the Sales guy that I wrote the work order with had had TWO customers with first names of Mary Jo. And my sales/installation paperwork was attached and filed to the other customers paperwork - and her job had been completed and filed. The company then sent another window installer with the windows to install the new windows......and guess what - the 3rd re-order were also defective. And then he looked at the existing windows and said what is wrong with these. And then he asked am I supposed to finish the woodwork framing/rough-in? (Reply Yes), He replies no one told me that. I indicated that the original paperwork indicated removal of old windows and complete installation of new windows which included putting the framing around the windows. Since April 2010 thru September 2010, I had two windows with incomplete installation, minimal spray foam installation - with periods of cold/wet weather and period of very hot weather. And not to forget very buggy master bedroom. The original windows were wood casement windows made by Peachtree. Only one needed to be replaced. They recommended both to be replaced and so for six month, I had windows that were defective and not installed correctly and my bedroom open to the elements. The new windows were vinyl. I think they decided to leave the windows installed in April in - as the reorders were all the same. The installer finally finished the windows with additional installation and adding the framing. I was responsible for repairing damage to drywall and painting of the window frames. Then the installer realized that no one had ordered the coil wrap for the outside window...so that had to be reordered and installed at a later date. The installer indicated I did not need to be home as the work could be taken care of from the outside. I said fine. The day of the install for the coil, I ended up taking the day off. The appointment had been made for the afternoon and the guy arrived around 10:30 a.m. I had closed the drapes upstairs in my room but decided to go out on the deck to let the guy know I was home. He was in the process of setting up his ladder...and was startled to see me. And my comment to him was "you're early" and he said yes that the morning freed up so he thought he'd come over and taking care of the job. So, I said ok. About 5-10 mins later, the ladder was down, back on his truck and he was gone. No work had been done. He came back later that afternoon to finish the work. This was in Late September 2010. In early October 2010, I was once again home. I had the windows open and it began to rain and the temps changed quickly and I went to close the windows. One of the windows would not close...which was odd. With casement windows, the locking mechanism is on the side of the window and there are two hooks that grab a nob on the side of the windows so that when the lever mechanism is engaged it closes and locks the windows....but the window couldn't be closed it was like there was something blocking the window from closing and there wasn't. So, I called the company...and they indicated that the earliest anyone could help was the next day (24 hours later) as they were moving material from the old warehouse and the new warehouse and no one was available. But she couldn't understand why I couldn't close the window. Turns out - the sales guy who sold the windows was in the office and took the call and was asking me what the problem was and why couldn't I close the window...I explained...he indicated he would be over in 10 minutes. He arrived. Looked at the window, removed the screen, tried to close the window and found that he couldn't.....and then unlatched one of the arms at the base and closed the window...and said not to use it until they could get it fixed as it was still covered under warranty. This was October 2010. I made a comment about windows not being able to get wet and having issues with opening/closing in various temperatures. He basically didn't understand what the problem was especially since they're good windows....and apparently he was unaware of the issues I had had just trying to get the windows installed and completed....seemed stunned to hear about what had gone on. So, until the company could figure out why the window wasn't closing (and you couldn't force it - it would make a noise like something was between the window and window frame). The following week, the installer came back to look at the window - he had been talking with the company reps to fix the problem. The problem remained unfix from October 2010 till January/Feb 2011. Each time, they came to the house to address the window issues from installation etc, I had to take time off from work - I used up my vacation time to be available and meet with company reps. I also had to stay in constant contact with them to follow up on the status of the window. Finally, in the Jan/Feb/March 2011 timeframe - the company headquarters located in Ohio - sent a company rep to look into resolving window problem. Because NO ONE had ever had that problem - it was the first...no one knew how to fix it. Gee, could it have been due to having four sets of windows that were defective? That from the time they were manufactured to delivery time - they were warped? Where was the quality control? The company rep arrived, looked at the window - opened it and then closed it, heard the noise/pop and said Oh, I know what the problem is....he didn't have a screwdriver on hand but I did - handed it to him, he removed the two clips on the side of the window and went downstairs to the truck and bent the brackets - came back upstairs, installed the clips - problem solved. Window works fine. He then went to the other window and removed the bracket on that window - took them outside and did the same thing - reinstalled the clips and thus closed the window problem case. For two single casement windows (custom made) - April 2010 to Feb/Mar 2011. I had three sets of doors - custom made for my house....from a different company (Hodges Window Company), the manufacturer was Jeld-wen...I visited the company showroom in Falls Church, the sales guy came to the house, followed by a guy who took the exact measurements and then ordered the doors and they were installed. The installation went smoothy! Took only 4.5 hours and I have never had any problems with my doors and the cost was $10,000. I can't recall the exact dates - May/June 2010 but using this company as a comparison example of a job done correctly. The doors are much larger than the windows, wider opening and they removed the old doors and fixed the opening to accept the new doors to include framing around the doors. - No problem, no issues, very professional....I would use Hodges again but never Window Man - which should come with a caveat of "Buyer Beware".
Description of Work: Installion of two custom casement windows. I met company representative at Home & Garden Show at Dulles Expo Center and arranged an appointment. The sales guy came to the house, measured the windows, and recommended two windows since the windows were on the same wall...I only needed one but ordered two. The order was placed in March/April.

AS is always the case, we appreciate customer reviews, whether positive, neutral or negative. We are sure to give special attention to customers of ours who have raised concerns with either our products, service, or professionalism. In the case of this particular customer, whose job was done over 4 years ago. We would like to take a brief moment to explain the manufacturing side of the situation, which is unfortunately out of our control. Due to the very large size of these casement style windows, the vinyl simply was not "holding true". We, to the best of our abilities, serviced the windows, installed new sashes/windows four times. All at our own expense and time, of course. The manufacture sent out their own factory technician, due to repeated failure of the manufacture's windows. After assessing the windows, and trying to establish what was causing the problem, the factory technician decided to replace the "Snub Locks", which did solve the problem. We always encourage customers to purchase the windows they feel best compliment their home's unique character. After all we are known as The Educational Window Company. That is why we carry 14 different brands of windows, and equally as important, 7 different materials. Such as fiberglass, wood, composite, storms, wood clad, aluminum and of course vinyl. We offer our sincere apologies to the customer, and trust that our extensive follow-up efforts, sash replacement and ultimately, a satisfactory repair has rectified the situation. Sincerely, Tom Patterson, Owner of 25 years

The installation was done in one day and went very well. The crew were very familiar with their jobs and did them well. The replacement of the bow window in our living room was fascinating to watch as they first tore out the existing bow window, creating a 9 foot wide by 4 foot tall opening in our wall (on a chilly November day) and then bringing in the custom manufactured window to fit that space. The new window bow fit perfectly, as did all the other windows.

I spent approximately $20,000 for the Window Man to replace all my windows and an exterior French Door. It was an awful experience. I should have known better and cancelled the contract when the salesman tried to trick me about the replacement of jambs and trim. However, he reversed himself and promised to replace them all., so I went forward with the contract. At the time of installation, which took 2 days after the Window Man promised one and didn't include the screens that I had paid for, the Window Man failed to install the jambs and trim on two windows. While I had specifically addressed this issue prior to installation, I let that transgression go, but about 6 months after installation, the French Door developed a leak akin to a fully flowing faucet and one of the windows won't close properly. When I called the Window Man about the problems, he tried to blame the leak on me, although I had never had such a leak before the Window Man's work was done, and, worst of all, the Window Man had the temerity to suggest that I owed him over $1,000, when I requested that he replace the remaining two the jambs and trim as promised. In short, the Window Man does shoddy work topped with sarcastic customer "service."

Regarding the leak: Mr. member called us on April 15th, 2014 about a leaking door. We had a technician at his home a couple hours later. Water was coming down from above the sliding 3rd floor door and coming in at the trim on top of the door frame. The door was clearly NOT leaking and the installation appeared to be in good shape. We reviewed photos taken before the installation and could see a piece of the flat roof flashing was "raised" roughly one foot from where the water was coming in. Wind driven rain coming from the right direction could be why this problem had not shown up before. We advised Mr. member to have an independent engineer who is an exterior building expert access the issue. We gave him the name and number of one who's office is very close to Mr. member,s home. We are 99% sure the water problem is not the door or it's installation. We volunteered to fix anything the engineer finds wrong and reimburse Mr. member for his fee. Regarding the windows: Our contract for window installation is simple and includes NO interior trim [casing, jambs, stool etc.] much less any in stain grade. After this was pointed out to Mr. menber at the final measure he threatened the saleeman with cancelling the contract. We should have cancelled the contract at that time. We incurred over $3,000.00 in extra cost that was in the contract and now he wants us to remove the existing trim etc. around another two windows and replace that with new stain grade trim etc. That is NOT in our contract. Mr. meber mentioned that our salesman tried to "trick" him. It is our opinion he "tricked" us and now wants us to fix a leak that has nothing to do with any of our products or work.

Last year, we bought a "new" house built in 1888. It had very old storm windows, one storm door on the kitchen entrance, and a screen door on the front. It was very leaky from an energy perspective (an understatement for sure!). Therefore, we hired The Window Man to put on new storm windows and doors and to replace an old jalousie window. Ours was a custom order, and it took two (for the windows) to five (for the doors) months to get everything installed. However, the finished product looks and works great! The temperature in the kitchen rose by about 3 degrees on average after the storm door was installed there; and we can't imagine what our heating bills would have been without the storms! Also, the colors of both doors matched the existing paint and our metal roof perfectly. The staff at The Window Man was helpful and easy to deal with, and the installers were competent and friendly; they did a great job. We have no complaints. It did take a while to get the doors installed but that's just the way it goes sometimes. Two thumbs up!

As previously stated, I did not go with the Window Man. However, I would consider them for future projects based on my experience with them.
Description of Work: I recently replaced the windows in my house. Although I did not purchase my windows from the Window Man, I wanted to leave a review. I did not buy from the Window Man because they did not have a product that fit all of my specific needs. However, I wanted to leave a review because of the outstanding service that I received from them while I was exploring my options. I was working with the location on Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria, VA. Matt, the representative, was EXTREMELY helpful. He clearly and quickly communicated with me and tried to find a product that fit my needs. I really appreciated all the time he took to answer my questions and provide information. I would have gone with the Window Man had I found a product that worked for my unique needs.

I found him to be very knowledgeable. Even after meeting with some of the other window folks, I didn't fully understand the difference in the windows, the difference in the material, and the difference in the options that they have. We went through all these and depending on my needs and what I wanted, he was able to adjust each window. As a result, I was able to pick windows that I felt suited me best and it also gave me a good understanding of what I was buying.

These guys were incredible. Jon, the manager with whom I dealt, was honest, patient, not at all pushy, and consistent during the weeks it took to go through the process. His installers were incredibly capable, professional, efficient, courteous, and thorough. He and his staff, including the installers, followed up afterwards to make sure everything went splendidly. Whereas I was quite anxious about the whole window replacement process, I am delighted with the result. My windows look great and, more importantly for me, my home is more comfortable and improved for the future.

We were extremely happy with all aspects of working with The Window Man. The representative who came to the house to provide an estimate, Nick, was friendly, knowledgeable, and didn't do a hard sell. Where other companies pressured us to commit immediately, Nick gave us plenty of time to research window construction, visit the showroom, and get other estimates. When we decided to go with fiberglass windows, it became clear that The Window Man had the best prices on Marvin Infinity windows. Nick was responsive and worked with us on the price to fit our budget. Though we expected a 4-6 week wait to get them ordered and installed, the windows came in only 3 weeks and we were able to schedule an installation within a few days of their arrival. The installation team arrived at 7 am and started a flurry of activity. The team was big enough that they could work on multiple windows simultaneously. All 20 windows and our new door were fully installed within a few hours. I especially appreciated their clean-up crew: they vacuumed up all the dust and debris, and cleaned the glass on each window before leaving. The whole crew was done by 2:30 pm! One of the windows had a broken part (the balance), and the team's supervisor notified me as we conducted the inspection. The part was ordered, and they returned to fix it within 2 weeks. The windows themselves are absolutely beautiful, as is the front door. I highly recommend Nick and the rest of the team at The Window Man.
Description of Work: The Window Man installed 20 Marvin Infinity replacement windows and a new ProVia front door in our 1965 house.

Overall, I'd recommend considering them, but would be cautious about pricing for any work beyond simple replacement of windows.
Description of Work: Good, professional, knowledgable sales person. However, they were only competitive on replacement windows, and when it came to doing a couple full tear-outs and modifications for larger windows, they were very pricey. My lasting impression was that they were over-charging for the modifications. Their price was high relative to other firms, and they provided reasons for the high price that didn't relate to the work that had been discussed during the visit. When they said that they would reduce the charge if they found that the work involved was less than what they had embedded in their quote, it left me unsure of their overall competence and integrity, despite being initially impressed by their products and sales person... In the end, I had other options with comparable products, more reasonable pricing on the change-outs and a more favorable impression of business practices, so I eliminated them from further consideration. It is worth noting that when I finally had the work done, the company that I selected may have under-estimated the effort required on the change-outs - but the work involved was still less than what was apparently in the Window Man quote.

Thanks so much for your post. Your comments help us improve our business pratices. We do try to put our "highest" price into "budget" proposals. That is expected in commercial remodeling. The three things that drove our labor up for the cut out work were #1 We have had some real challengs in bathroom cut outs before because of the plumbing in the walls! However based on the age of your home we should have ajusted that down some. #2 We have found Loudoun Co. more difficult to deal with than Fairfax and Alex. for permit required work. #3 Until we opened up the wall we wouldn't know if bracing to the corners would be requried. We wish we had gotten your job but sincerely appreciate your taking the time to post your comments. Tom Patterson
