Description of Work: I signed a contract with this company in November of 2012. Clint was a smooth talking salesman who pressured me to get the sale, calling me multiple times a day with big promises. The crew started about a month later. Sixteen months later, they still aren't finished. I hired them to replace a smaller brick staircase leading to my front door with a larger brick staircase with stone treads. They made mistakes from the beginning. The contract called for 12" treads, they designed it for 11. (I asked for blueprints before they started, and they refused, telling me I could look at the plans that the foreman has). They built the foundation for 11", but then laid lintels for 12" steps. They got to the mid-landing all out-of-whack, and had to redo part of the foundation, decreasing significantly the interior storage area. The brick facade they originally didn't support from the foundation, and I made them redo that also. Their first attempt to set the treads was a fiasco, with treads tipped out of level, out of square, etc. water pooled instead of shed. But they had to be removed anyway, because they used two different colors of limestone, from two different suppliers because that was cheaper. None of it was on site when they started the job, and I didn't see it until it was already partially up. As a fix, they tried reordering half the limestone to match, but that resulted in a third color, so they had to reorder the entire batch. This is several months between orders, since it comes from a quarry in Indiana. The third batch they dropped and broke the last big piece, so I'm left with a staircase that was 95% covered. They hadn't ordered any extra. The foreman was on vacation when the guys were laying the stone, and of the three guys who were generally there working, the senior one was also not on site when the stone was dropped. So, they remeasure and tell me they're going to reorder everything and do it right. OK, so I'm patient. Five months later and I just find out they didn't order the stone. They want to try to match the missing piece. So, finally I'm writing the review. |Unfortunately, I've got a few more negatives as well... |The railing is up, but not with a consistent distance from the edge of the stone (varies by two inches along a five foot landing), it is rusting at most joints, and has stained the stone below it. I paid extra for the structure to have storage underneath, but they didn't waterproof properly, and didn't pitch the landing and treads (1/4" per foot is standard) for water to drain off, so I get dripping water in the storage area and saturated wet concrete walls all around. This winter, freezing water lead to quite bad ice on the steps. |I don't know how well these guys normally are, and I was very patient and understanding all along the way, hoping that the product in the end would be great. Sixteen months later, I'm very frustrated and my front yard is still a mess. Now I guess I'm going to have to play harder. Northern Virginia has plenty of masonry choices, I'd recommend you make a different one. |With this project still ongoing, I'll update my review based on the final outcome. Bad luck and mistakes can happen, so the real measure of a company's quality is to handle them properly. So I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that they'll get this done right.
