I went with KSCI because of the good reviews on Angies List. Mike MacCabe and his crew were great. The crew worked steadily throughout each day. Mike showed up two to three times each to check with me if I had any concerns. Mike would explain everything about the installation as the crew was doing the installation. He was open to changes and easy to work with At the end of each workday the crew spent a half hour cleaning up the worksite and stacking the unused materials. It rained several days. The crew always made sure the house was protected against the rain. Mike also showed up at the end of the day to make sure my house was protected from rain. The last day the crew thoroughly cleaned up around the house. The total cost just under the estimated price even though they made some changes I asked them to do. My house looks great.

It didn't go at all. John never provided the promised estimates.
Description of Work: I met with John Knowlton (early November) and explained that I wanted two estimates: one for repairing some damaged siding before winter weather set in, and a separate bid for installing vinyl siding on the entire house that was likely to be done in the spring of 2015. John took measurements and said he would send the estimates with more information on the types of siding and trim options during the week. I never heard from John again even though I left a voice mail after one week later to inquire about the promised estimate.

We love working with John at KCSI. He gives great advice when we ask for a consultation and always provides several options. We especially appreciate that he doesn't try to sell us services that we don't yet need. For this project, his team installed new gutters and repaired woodwork that was damaged. They worked quickly and left no trace that they were in my flower beds - which I really appreciate! We would recommend them to anyone.

The craftsmanship and work ethics of this company was exceptional. Every detail and option was covered and when I added two additional items to the list of required work; KCSI provided the work at a very low cost and utilized available scraps which were perfect for the small area I added. This not only saved us money, it says a lot about the honest and dependable service this company provides. I've received multiple complements from neighbors and friends on how beautiful the new roof and gutters look. There were also several repair areas on the roof which KCSI repaired and shielded from Ice Dams and damage. The cleanup and removal of old shingles and paper was also impeccable. Great Job! HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION !!!

KCSI was very responsive from the first phone call. John Knowlan presented an estimate that was very competitive and he took the time to answer all my questions during the estimate phase. He was very patient with all of our questions and was helpful about the solutions to our situation. But, the real story was the work performed. His crew of six, lead by German was very quick, thorough and professional. On a house that was built in 1964, and had the original siding, there will be unknown issues that will be exposed. Our house was no different and when these issues were found, John and German would meet with me to discuss the options. They were very helpful with items that were not originally known at the start of the job. KCSI also made several improvements to my house that were not expensive add ons. They also cleaned up every nail and all debris. They truly wanted my house to look good when they left. And it does! I would recommend them to anyone, and I will use them again when I need something.

Mike McCabe is a true professional and I trust his opinion. We have since had Mike examine our roof and gutters. I would use him again for sure. And although we did not find KCSI on Angie's list I wanted to comment when I saw his company was listed. I would give KCSI an A++.

We had an excellent experience with KCSI Construction. They replaced all of the windows in our home, installed a beautiful bay window and fixed our screened porch for us. The owner, John Knowlan, spent time with us explaining the window options that would work best with our home and was at the job every day with his crew. We had quotes from several other companies and found that KCSI was very honest and provided high quality services at a very reasonable price. The crew did a great job with the window installation and repair of our porch, and also thoroughly cleaned up after they completed the job. We were very pleased with this company and highly recommend them.

The KCSI company website makes claims about the quality of their work, personalized services, and experienced professionals dedicated to customer service. Strong talk, but owner Mike McCabe and his install team also walk the walk. I have a fairly large house that needed to be re-sided. The original siding was aluminum, out of production before it was even put on the house 19 years ago, and probably not installed correctly the first time, leading to water damage. I requested an estimate for replacement siding and got an appointment a day later and at a time that was convenient for me since I have a weird work schedule. Mike did a careful assessment of my house and made several recommendations with pros and cons of each. He was able to point out and plan for likely trouble spots before even taking down the existing siding and discussed options for repair. I was aware that additional problem areas would probably be uncovered once the siding was removed and was prepared for the worst - major damage around several large windows. Between the time I signed the contract to have the work done and the actual start date, Mike regularly updated me on the status of the siding order, delivery of materials and project start date. On the day work started, he showed up at my door with his entire install team and introduced them by name - nice touch. Mike was also on site for at least a portion of each day and made sure I had no issues or concerns. As it turned out, there were fewer additional problems than I expected and Mike presented several options for resolution. Unexpected issues included localized termite damage that was repaired at a very reasonable price and a flashing issue at the roof line of a new sun porch ? also corrected at minimal cost. The only ?major? issue was one large picture window (1 of 4) that had totally rotted across the bottom sill and could only be fixed for the short term. The other 3 windows had some water damage but Mike and his team were able to save them. I was actually anticipating having to replace at least two windows. Mike gave me a number of options for windows that would be suitable as a replacement and worked with me to make sure the window I chose met all my needs ? both functionally and cosmetically. I should note that in addition to the siding, Mike?s team replaced all the aluminum used to wrap the brick molding. The previous wrap job wasn?t really holding up and didn?t look good, even when it was brand new. His install team replaced it all and it looks amazing ? crimped to match the brick molding exactly, complete with mitered corners. My house looks brand new and I won?t have to worry anymore about painting trim or wood rotting! Bottom line: Mike and his install team did an amazing job. The job was priced fairly and the final bill was incredibly close to the original estimate - so very few surprises that were not included in the original estimate. The open lines of communication/quick response with Mike removed all angst normally associated with a large renovation project. I'd recommend you not even bother getting other estimates and just go to KCSI for any roofing/siding/window needs.

I had him out to give an estimate. They were originally built with aluminum and wood planks. Someone put cheap siding on. He brought out different products and I went with insulated. He brought me separate styles in large sizes. I taped them on my house and it helped narrow the houses down. Extremely punctual, very clean!! They even made sure the street was clean! He worked with my roofing contractor. They did a walk around and answered all my questions. He told me to check it and he would come back. Absolutely no problem and my house looks great! The whole house looks sharp! He is super personable and makes you feel like family

If I could give KCSI an A+ on Angie's list, I would. I joined Angie's because of the dearth of trustworthy contractors in the DC area and because of one extremely negative experience I had last year. KCSI was fantastic. John came out to our house several times to get a sense of the job, always working with us on the time--both my wife and I work. I have a very restrictive BAR in my area and John provided me with both materials and brochures that I could take to my BAR to assuage their fears. Given the expense of the project, KCSI was willing to do it in phases over the course of several months to help us absorb the cost. Few other companies were willing to do this or wanted to add a surcharge. KCSI's estimate was by far the lowest of the 8 we received and despite the discovery of extensive rot that was not anticipated, KCSI did not hammer us on the cost of the additional repairs. John was also extremely great in working with us when we realized that we needed a pause because our infant was unable to sleep with the project ongoing. Communication was great--John let me know where we stood at every phase of the project and what was accomplished each day. I have never seen a contractor clean up like KCSI did--usually, there is trash, nails, junk, etc. I was hard pressed to even find a paint flake in my grass! The work is top notch, KCSI was flexible, extremely competitive on the cost, and John was forthright and earnest about everything. I will certainly turn to them in the future for anything I need done on my home.
Description of Work: John and KCSI construction replaced the siding, the window frames, and two gutters on our house. The previous owner of our house concealed the full extent of rot on our siding by slapping a new coat of paint over it. This was a serious and expensive job and KCSI exceeded our expectations.

KCSI did a fantastic job and we couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the work and how our house looks. We had estimates from two other respected companies, but chose KSCI because of the quality of the estimate/consultation, competitive price, and reviews about attention to detail. They did not disappoint. John K. oversaw the project and kept us informed throughout the process and responded to all of our questions/concerns. The crew, led by German, was incredibly hardworking. They were professional and affable throughout the project. They did a great job cleaning up and taking care of final touchups. The company even used left over material to re-side and install trim on our storage shed abutting the house -- this detail was a big and welcome contribution to the project. We would highly recommend KCSI because of the quality of their work and attention to detail. Throughout, we felt that we were working with a company that we could trust.
Description of Work: Removed all existing siding and replaced with fiber cement siding. Replaced rotted sheathing as need. Furnished and installed all siding accessories. Installed new shutters and large gable vent. Repaired damaged corners and all trim as needed and installed PVC coated aluminum wrap. I had originally met with John Knowlan back in 2009 for some leaks around my roof ridge vents. He gave me estimates, and then I put off the repair for 4 years. 2013 summer rains caused major leaking so I needed to get this repaired before the winter. I called John in October 2013. He pulled up the old estimate and agreed to use same price. I also added more work. John was really easy to work with and he also supplied various options and recommendations (ie do entire roof, replace/upgrade sheathing, etc.). He was very detailed oriented and was double-checking the job all day. Work conducted was: -Remove top roof ridge vent, replace all bad sheathing, shingle over new sheathing. -Replace all top roof pipe collars. -Remove and replace ridge vent on lower roof. -Replace any worn shingles. -Remove and replace front upper gutter with larger size. -Remove and replace front lower roof gutter. -Remove rotted gutter spacing wood on soffits and replace with pressure treated. -Add new larger downspouts to both. -Install gutter covers (I supplied material). -Conducted paint touch-up as needed. Job was started and finished in one day. Crew of 6 or 7 guys went immediately to work on all areas and were very easy to talk to/work with. No communication problems . All debris was cleaned up. Work looks great! I thought this was a very fair price for the amount of work completed. I would not hesitate to call KCSI back for another job and I have already recommended them to my other Truro neighbors.

The job went very well. They were done in the time they said they would be done even with the rain. They were at the house by 7:30 and left around 5:30 each day. They cleaned up at the end of the day before they left and were conscientious of our family as they worked on our home. They told us how to prepare for installation and what to expect. I asked for a little extra detail on the trim of door and they were able to do exactly what I wanted. (pictures available)
Description of Work: This was a large job. We had our siding, gutters, windows and doors (front and back French) replaced. The owner came out and spent time explaining what was best for our particular home and was at the job every day checking the work being done. We had quotes from two other well known companies in the area and felt KCSI was very honest, used quality products and gave a very good price. We are very happy with outcome and the windows siding and doors look great. We have a new home that is energy efficient and beautiful. This company uses their own employees to install and don't sub out. We had the same crew for the whole installation. They were all very nice and great to work with during the installation. We are very happy with this company and would recommend them.

KCSI was upfront as to what they could and could not do: Roofing was not their specialty, but most definitely replacement of a box bay was (up to then, I had difficulties finding a contractor who could do the work). John Knowlan could not have been more helpful. We met at a townhouse complex nearby so that she could show me 3 different box bay options -- I really appreciated the extra effort he made to do that -- when he provided me 3 different quotations, I knew exactly what I wanted. The crew of about 4 men ripped out the old box bay and replaced it with a much improved, sturdier version, using Azek PVC trim boards. The team put in two full days in extremely hot and humid weather, and completed the task. John came by several times daily to check out the progress. They cleaned up thoroughly before taking off. I had before and after photos ready to post, but it doesn't appear that Angie's list accepts photos anymore! I was very pleased with KCSI's work, and would highly recommend them for any exterior job.

I had an exterior wall made of T1-11 MDF which was buckling and cracking both vertically and horizontally. It was two stories plus the attic rake on top of a walk out basement, so it was a good 3-1/2 stories to the top of the roof. The original cedar wall had been replaced by another contractor in 2006. Unfortunately, I was traveling during the time the wall was put up in 2006, so I didn't see how it was installed. I knew that it had been done wrong when I got on a ladder to put some nails into the seam to flatten it out and it never hit a stud. Additionally, each story did not overlap the one below it as it had been in the original design. KCSI offered to fix it correctly by removing every back down to the studs if necessary and building it back out correctly. I requested that they use a cement fiberboard that looked like T1-11 for the exterior due to the unrelenting heat it gets from the sun. They also recommended a change to my materials list for some potential wet areas from run-off. They needed to replace a boatload of trim all around the house that had taken physical abuse over the years as well as deal with a couple of ugly bay window panels that I've disliked since I bought the home. They brainstormed how to deal with it and were very creative in coming up with multiple possibilities until we came up with the perfect solution. They also needed to repair a hole in one of the panels on the back. Birds had been nesting in the wall for a couple of years. Although I told them I'd be happy with whatever they could do, the repair was almost invisible. They were pretty proud of that repair and had every right to be. Finally, I had an issue with water running down between the house and the garage. The original builder apparently just built the garage right up against the finished cedar panels of the house. KCSI did a superb job cutting a strip out of the paneling to put the correct z- and step-flashing in place with new trim boards. They did the same with a mid-line rake in the center of my roof which had been ignored for years. I have no concerns with water coming in any more. They were fast, professional, and reasonably priced. John was a pleasure to work with, German (John's foreman) knew his stuff and came up with many of the solutions, and the entire crew could not have been better. I am an extremely picky customer when it comes to a final product being done right. A few contractors have complained that I was too picky. I'm not. I just expect them to do a better job than I could do myself. But KCSI's work was top notch. I would use them again without hesitation. It went so well, I told John to feel free to use me as a reference. I have never done that for any other company.

The original service was performed in Nov 2011. They did an excellent job. Unfortunately, a window was leaking and Mike and his crew came back to seal the window. They had to remove the siding from the 1st floor up to the top of the 2nd floor to determine the leakage issue. They performed the work in sealing the window in 1 day. My wife and I are very impressed. I had originally submitted the positive comments on their work in the early part of February, but for some reason, it was not posted. I apologize for that. I would definitely call Mike MacCabe to do similar work in the future. Thanks again, Mike.

Description of Work: I called Mike at KCSI regarding some siding repairs. We have a Masonite type siding product which looks great but which turns into a cardboard-like consistency if it ever gets wet (e.g. from not being painted regularly or adequately). Anyway, I believe we have only a handful of boards that need replacement, so I know (or should I say hope hope) the job is likely to be a relatively small one. However, Mike agreed to come by the day after we spoke, and he walked around the house and looked at the siding where there is obvious damage. He agreed that there was some damage that should be taken care of, but he was very honest with me and told me that I would be much better off going with a skilled handyman than to use his services, mainly because he employs a full time crew and would have to charge a minimum daily rate to do the work. Given the cost of workman's comp and liability insurance and paying full time wages for an in-house crew, I understand why he would need to charge such a minimum, and I plan to take his advice regarding finding a skilled handyman. Mike seemed very knowledgeable and was very professional. I respect the fact that he even took the time to come out here to look at our house, because I realize that he probably knew from our initial conversation that the job would likely be too small for his company. However, it is also a smart move on his part as he would probably be the first person I call if I ever need to replace entire sections of siding on our house. If youneed major siding repairs/replacement, I would highly recommend calling Mike as I believe you will not be disappointed,

After his initial presentation, we chose KCSI over other bidders based upon 1) the highly professional and knowledgeable yet very friendly demeanor of Mike; 2) the quality of the CertainTeed product; 3) having observed KCSI's install crew in action doing a similar project on a nearby residence; and, 4) Mike's assurance the project would be completed within our short time frame Everything went so smoothly. The supplies were delivered on schedule and the crew began work exactly when planned. Mike was a daily (usually two or three time) visitor to our home to check on the progress of his crew and the accuracy/quality of their work. A few times, Mike was not 100% satisfied with the way some of the trim wrap looked and had it redone to his satisfaction. These items were things we would not have even noticed but Mike did and wanted the project to be a perfect as possible. The work was completed within the requested timeframe and the clean-up left our home looking pristine. I would not hesitate to recommend KCSI and certainly would use their services again in the future. The quality of the workmanship of KCSI and the professionalism of Mike MacCabe and his crew made the cost of the project very reasonable. The house looks great and is the envy of our neighbors. Our oldest son, who has been a home builder, looked the job over and indicated it was exceptionally well done.
Description of Work: We received an initial estimate and services briefing from Mike MacCabe in late November and after reviewing his proposal engaged KCSI to do both siding and gutter repalcement on our home. We chose CertainTeed Cedar Impressions and large 6" guttering. We made a request that KCSI schedule us so the work would be completed by 12/20/2012 - a very "short fuse" deadline but Mike assured us he could accommodate our request. Work began on 12/5 with the removal of our old siding and installation of an OSB underlayment and vapor barrier. The install crew was very efficient and precise. They cleaned the area every evening before leaving the site. An added bonus was Mike's frequent visits to our home and his job site to be sure everything was being done to his and our satisfaction. He made several suggestions regarding trim, shutters and other enhancements to the project and explained in detail each phase of the work. All the work was completed well before 12/20 and not a scrap of debris was present after the crew left the site.
