Joe is a marvelous craftsman who prides himself in perfection. I needed to build a section of a wall first prior to building a cabinet in my kitchen. This is where Joe comes in. Joe first put up the frame-studs in order for electricians to lay the wiring. Once the electricians were finished with wiring, Joe made four separate trips to put up the drywall and sand down the joint compound. He even used water sponge, instead of sand paper, to control the dust. Perhaps most importantly, Joe does absolute phenomenal work. Not only is he courteous and always on time, but he also does safe repair work. I cannot recommend him more.

This professional is a talented carpenter who does effective, safe repair work. I had numerous projects--and the finished product on each one exceeded expectations while being more value priced than expected. As I prepare my house for sale, and prepare to move, Joe Cox has been a key element to successful progress, and become a trusted agent. After having some lighting fixtures added to the basement (by an electrician), the drop ceiling collapsed. Joe was able to repair the problem completely, while improving the overall strength of the drop ceiling, all within my short time frames to prepare for a house inspection! He suggested a clever, effective solution for a stairwell gap (too much space under a bannister -- a danger for children), which more than fixed the problem, and cost less than expected. Joe replaced four interior doors, adjusting appropriately for this 35+ year old house -- they look very simply perfect. His attention to detail is meticulous, and he is a trusted advisor for suggestions on repairs -- often suggesting lesser cost options when they will ensure the quality and safety I need. He is extremely clean, leaving no traces of his work, other than the completed product. His work to conceal some pipes in the basement was exemplary -- excellent carpentry work that covered unsightly pipes blends in so well with the existing wall the work is all but invisible. Can you tell I just keep using him for all my long-overdue projects?? He's that good. Joe Cox is a classic example of why Angie's List works so well. He's busy, but still works with my schedule. A true find.
Description of Work: Replaced numerous interior doors. Repaired collapsed drop ceiling. Added safety railing to stair banister. Fixed broken pull down stair to attic. Fixed bi-fold closet doors. Carpentry work to conceal exposed pipes following a drainage project.

Joe promptly replied to our call. He was very accomodating to our schedule when setting up an appointment to come and see our job needs. His estimate was prompt and reasonable. On the morning of the job, he arrived early, worked hard, and cleaned up all evidence of the work. He was friendly and courteous. The end product was superior. We definitely plan to call Joe again for other jobs we have.

I was disappointed that Joe couldn't help me because he came so highly recommended. It seems he gets a lot of calls and can pick and choose with whom he works.
Description of Work: I need my attic pull-down stairs replaced. When Joe called me back he asked the age of my house, with the reason that he's not a large enough operation to handle lead abatement if there is lead paint in the house. My house was built in 1952. I am familiar with the EPA regulations and told him I understood and asked him if he wanted to turn the job down. He said no, and agreed to stop by and take a look later in the week. 20 minutes later he called and turned down the job. Not a problem, I am finding someone else to do it. I just wish he'd said no during the first phone call.

Response from JOE COX CONSTRUCTION & HANDYMAN
It appears the only people that have a problem with me are the one's that I refuse to work for. If I called this Lady back 20 minutes later( and I really don't remember talking to her )it was because upon further consideration I felt it was better to decline the job.Saving both of us time by refusing the job seems to me to be the professional thing to do. I try to help everyone that calls me but being a one man company limits me and in hindsight I feel I made absolutely the correct decision in this case.

The project went perfect. He prepped well, exercising caution for our new hard wood floors, had the materials delivered timely directly to our home, and cleaned up everything.
Description of Work: Joe installed pull-down attic stairs, a raised flooring with insulation under, and shelving in our attic space. Before this project, it was empty, unusable space. Now we have a huge amount of storage space. It is one of the best things we have done to improve our home. We inquired with 5 businesses. Joe was clearly the BEST in every category. He came up with the best design and was the utmost professional one could ask for. Even though he didn't do the electrical work that came with this project, he had an electrician he works with regularly and that individual is also excellent, whom we have called many times subsequently for electrical work to be done. Joe was a fantastic service provider and I wouldn't hesitate using him again or referring him to family and friends.

Joe is extremely pleasant and reliable. He always responds to calls and shows up promptly when he schedules an appointment. He honors his estimates and his prices are fair. While there are some "handyman" tasks he won't undertake (for instance painting), he does an excellent job with everything he agrees to do. He knows how to solve many minor household problems. Most importantly, he is an expert craftsman whose carpentry skills are commendable. We get many compliments on the crown molding he intalled and we are as pleased as anyone could be with the fireplace surround and bookshelves he designed and built after we asked for his suggestions on improving an ugly mantlepiece. Highly recommended!
Description of Work: Over the course of several years, Joe Cox has made many household repairs for us and completed a number of projects. He made many mirnor repairs and supervised two bathroom renovations in our last home, recruiting reliable plumbers and electricians for assistance as needed. In our new home, he secured a wobbly stairway handrailing, designed window shelves for cats, installed flawless crown molding and designed and built an impressive bookcase and fireplace surround.

After the visit, the following day, he gave the estimate over the phone and asked that we pick out a trim to give an accurate estimate. This is quite understandable. However, several days later, I called him and informed him that we will be deciding on a trim that day, but wanted to I see a GENERAL breakdown in writing/email of how he came about prices. i.e (10 windows, 11 doors, etc). I didn't need details. just a sentence or two of price breakdown as to compare. Also, it was not to nickel and dime him or to remove aspects of the job, but it was to compare against others and make note to ourselves on how much material would cost etc. He stated that he doesn?t break down prices and this is his way of doing things and how he's always done them in the past. Also, he doesn?t give measurements etc because then some other contractor may use his measurements. I found this to be interesting because, why would another contractor use his measurements. Why wouldn?t any contractor do their own measurements? I didn?t wantto argue with him, so left it at that.He then continued to state that it took him several hours to calculate the estimate he gave me over the phone. So I said well then, that means he has these notes somewhere and he can give me a GENERAL breakdown of the price. He kept coming up with various excuses. While I was speaking, he kept telling me to ?let me finish?.? Several times, and did not let me interject. He then said he also can?t give breakdown because we didn?t chose trim style. So then I told him, how about we use the ?sanitary? style as the reference (because that?s the style he used to come up with the stimate) He then said, that he still can?t break it down. That?s not how he does it. He just gives one figure/number and you can assume Its about 50/50 between labor and material. I then decided to email him thank him for his time and that we will take a different route. He then emailed stating exactly what he stated on the phone, it was the exact same sentence, just 5 different ways and extremely repetiive and confusing. Did not clarify anything. He seems to not like to hear the customer?s perspective and does things only his way. Which is fine if works for him and other customers. Not for us. I can only imagine if this is the frustrating process early on, how it will be if we did have issues later on. I am not here to bad mouth him. I am sure he does great quality work. I am just sharing my experience, because I believe that is what Angie?s list is about. I am paying to hear honest reviews. I?m sure he will reference his glowing reviews, it still does not mean that I have to agree with the way he goes about things. I have never heard of a company not being able to provide a general breakdown and WRITTEN estimate. It leads me to believe that if we had an issue it would be a debate. I frankly don?t have the time or energy to go through that.
Description of Work: Mr. Cox arrived on time, with references and license information on hand. He seemed nice and started to take measurements. All went well on the visit and we decided that we like him and may use him depending on his estimate. We believe in encourageing small businesses as long as they can also do a good job. He said he does all the work himself, so we took that into consideration as well.

Response from JOE COX CONSTRUCTION & HANDYMAN
This customer called me for an estimate and I came and spent over an hour with them helping them decide how things should be done and explaining how trim is done- how you can replace door slabs only or the entire frame etc.-I then spent considerable time compiling a list for the estimate without final decisions being made. I have had similar situations where incorrect info was used and confusion came soon after this and this is why I would not proceed without final decisions being made. This customer had several projects going on at the time of my estimate with contractors working in the house already. My reluctance at breaking down an incorrect list for them was due to my feeling that I was being used without the benefit of a contract and to go further would be unwise. I try to help all my potential customers as much as I can but her insistance on a breakdown seemed suspect to me. I e-mailed her to say that I understood her decision completly and wished her luck with her project.I would point anyone with questions about me to my reviews of people I have done business with as an accurate guage of my quality of work and as a business man.

Overall, working with Joe has been fantastic! He's a truly honest and forthright guy and an excellent carpenter and handyman. He has innovative solutions to difficult problems. He's very clear about what he's best at and what are his weaknesses (and may be a better fit for another company or handyman). For the first job described above, I had never done much remodeling or work with a handyman (I'm a relatively new homeowner), and Joe made me feel really comfortable with entrusting my home repair to him. I usually book 3-4 estimates - Joe was the first estimate that came to see me. After meeting with him, I immediately canceled the others (which I wouldn't recommend that most people do). I had a great gut feeling about working with Joe, which worked out really well. We met again and walked through all of the work that he would do, and he drew up a contract. Joe had some innovative ideas, for example, I had hoped that he would be able to replace the ceiling tiles in my basement, as they were drooping from recent water damage. However, he showed me why this was impossible, but then suggested nailing them up, which worked out just as well (we already had the water damage problem taken care of). We stayed in contact throughout the next couple days while he was completing the work, which was great. When the work was completed, it was all excellent quality work, particularly the carpentry work. For the second job, I was hoping to get a source of water damage in the basement fixed (getting an old basement door replaced and getting the frame caulked and puttied to keep out water - old door frame was full of holes), and also added in a toekick repair in the kitchen that was rotted away. This went really well and the quality of the door was fantastic. For the third job, I had mentioned to Joe much earlier that I needed to close up the deck hole. He quoted me a price and I thought I'd check to see if any decking companies could come close that price. He very explicitly said that the majority of the price was for materials, as a good number of boards had to be replaced on my deck to cover up this previous hot tub hole. I checked with one other company and the price was double Joe's quoted price, so I decided to go with him again, knowing that he's a great carpenter and would do a great job. You just have to see the photos to see the work that he did - the level of craftsmanship is amazing, and I much preferred working with Joe over a large decking company that would probably do something wrong. In short, Joe is the best person to go to if you're looking for a trustworthy and honest handyman. I plan on working with him in the future, and am looking forward to it.
Description of Work: Joe and I have signed three contracts for work. 1) Signed in later January and work completed within the next week - $550 for the following work: a. Removed two cabinets above my fridge (to fit in a taller fridge), and re-cut the cabinet trim; b. Repair one severely broken kitchen drawer and fix all other semi-broken kitchen drawers; c. Cut bottom of kitchen closet door (a new kitchen floor was installed earlier and door could no longer close) d. install new front and back door locks (lock were supplied by me and not included in cost) e. Replace a 30'' bedroom door with new similar style door (new hinges, using existing lock, cost of door included in price) f. Push back up drooping ceiling tiles in the basement 2) Signed in early March and completed a few days later - $600 for the following work: a. install new six panel fiberglass exterior door in basement and remove old door (all work caulked and puttied) (cost of door included in price) b. Repair toekick in kitchen 3) Signed in May and completed a week later - $2250 for the following work: a. installed new framing decking boards for half of my deck (I believe it came out to 24-26 boards?); I was closing up what was once a hole for a hot tub on my deck. b. replaced cap boards on the rails of the deck and the built-in bench c. re-hinge door in the master bath that swung the wrong way.

It was a great experience, with a wonderful end product.
Description of Work: Joe did a great job on built-in bookshelf/entertainment cabinets surrounding our fireplace. He has great attention to detail, providing beautiful carpentry, especially at his prices. But he also does not try to do any work that is not needed or wanted. He talked to use at length before and during the work to make sure everything was exactly what we expected. We also needed some tile and electrical/lighting work done in conjunction with the shelves and he coordinated with both contractors so that I would not need to leave work mutliple times. This was actually the second job Joe has done for us. He also built new columns on our front porch, with again a great attention to the little details that make all the difference in how the finished product looks. We will call Joe for all our carpentry work, and highly recommend him.

Originally contacted to replace drywall on bulk head in kitchen/sunroom, install baseboards in sitting room in basement, extend a wall in kitchen, and repair rotted wood on second floor bay window. Agreed to perform the first two items. Added two more projects--replacement of crown moulding in basement sitting room and construction of built-in entertainment unit and bookcases. We are very pleased with the end result (especially the built-in entertainment unit) and would definitely contact Joe for future projects. (Oh, one thing you should know--Joe does not paint. We painted the drywall, baseboards, crown moulding, and entertainment unit. Not a big deal for us, but it should be noted...)

All went very well from start to finish. Joe responded to initial call same evening and set appointment to estimate the projects; he was very responsive and informative and provided ideas and solutions to the problem areas we had. We were very pleased with his approach; he was detailed as to what he would do to take care of each of our areas of concern. Joe was great to work with, and we would definitely contact him again.
Description of Work: Joe Cox performed various carpentry and handyman services: carpentry work to include acquisition and installation of new interior solid core door, finish carpentry work to the under cabinet section of a wet bar including trim, installation of pull-out shelving in lower wet bar cabinets, exterior window caulking, other miscellaneous carpentry, adjusted front entry and several other interior doors for vastly improved closure, installation of special ordrered pulls to a pass-through cutom wood folding door, etc. He was reasonably priced (above amount includes materials) and demonstrated great care in his work. Joe was very pleasant to work with; always timely and very responsive. He was very thorough in describing exacty what and why he was doing certain things, and was very informative in the process. He had good recommendations even for work activities that he does not personally perform, i.e. electrical.

He was good and he came on time. He gave an estimate for the work and it was a variety of odd jobs. He gave us a phone call to tell us when he would start the work. He came and it was over a course of three days because it was drywall. Each day he would let me know and take care of the work. He stopped by for the final bill and everything worked out. He did 2 drywall's and he replaced 3 banisters and did some touch ups. He caulked 3 tubs and for 2 he had to completely remove all the caulking. He also did caulking in the kitchen. His price was good compared to other companies. He only communicates through the phone and is not available on email but it makes no big deal to me.

Joe was able to make several adjustments to the the existing door framing so that the door would close flush. He also installed a threshold and sweep system, which was difficult as the door mounted awkwardly and extended lower than the actual deck. This has helped keep bugs out, which is one of the primary reasons we were doing this project. Joe was on time for the estimate and the work. He was exceedingly professional, straightforward and competent in his work. It would be a pleasure to use him again.
Description of Work: We called Joe looking for ideas on how to replace the screen door that led from our screened deck outside. We were looking for something other than the typical screen door, but we weren't quite sure what our options were. He did quite a bit of research to find us a door that would work. It was also a difficult install as the door was at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the deck, and the original installer screwed up the geometry entirely.

I couldn't get any contractors out to fix my basement until I was lucky enough to find Joe. He happened to be between jobs and was available immediately. He came out as planned and looked at the job and gave us a quote. He walked us through everything that needed to be done. When I told him i needed the basement fixed by middle of December he told me he thought he could make that date. I was so happy as my college aged son was coming home for winter break and his bed and bath were downstairs. After reading the great comments on Angie's list we went with Joe. He was always prompt (sometimes early but that worked for me) was neat and clean and did a great job. We agreed on times he could come and when he couldn't come due to sleeping daughter and he respected that and abided by our agreement. His subcontractor for tile work and plumbing was fantastic, polite and like Joe his work was fantastic. Joe performed all duties as agreed to within budget and schedule. He got the job done in time for my son to sleep in his own bed when he came home. Overall Joe did a great job, was honest, trustworthy and professional.
Description of Work: Our basement flooded as a result of the flood this Fall and after fixing the water problem, we needed our drywall and bathroom fixed. Joe replaced the drywall and fixed our bathroom by taking out the toilet, cabinet and all the tiles which needed to be replaced.
