Joe Cox Construction and Handyman is exactly the type of small business that Angie's List was established to highlight. A quick read of the website and its many reports from very satisfied customers demonstrated that he was exactly the type of contractor we were looking for. I don't recall ever seeing an Angie's List service provider with the glowing reviews that appear for Joe Cox Construction. Now that the work is complete, we can say unequivocally that Joe Cox is a master at his trade and a truely special person. He returned our first call within a matter of minutes of leaving a message requesting that he phone to discuss our needs. He arrived at our home later that day on his way home to discuss the myriad of small projects that we had identified. He described his approach to the work and how he would intend to handle each assignment. The next day he provided a verbal estimate and an anticipated start date in about 7-10 days. Within a few days, he brought us the written estimate and contract which was exactly as he had described verbally. The work began a couple of days later and, as he had indicated, took about 1 1/2 days to complete. Joe arrived on the date we had agreed and at the precise moment he said he would arrive at our home. He treated our home as if it were his own. He did each of the jobs quickly and efficiently. The quality of each job was exceptional and in many respects the result was "better than new". We are so thankful for Angie's List and its customers for pointing out Joe Cox to us. He will be the first and only call we ever make when we need a a master craftsman/handyman again. I is truely a pleasure to recommend him if others ever need the services he provides. .

Joe did a great job. He gave us an estimate explaining everything he would do, when he would do it, and how much it would cost. He kept us informed by phone often and was a great communicator. He was a quick worker and did an excellent job.
Description of Work: Joe installed an exterior door in our garage, which involved buying materials, cutting a hole in a concrete wall, putting up a frame, and installing the door.

I was very happy with the crown molding that was installed. Joe arrived on time, was professional and friendly. Provided me a free estimate and brought a sample of the molding that he recommended. I called to schedule for the work to be done and it was easy to get a date and time established. One area of my ceiling was fairly uneven so I was concerned about how that would look after the molding was installed. Joe explained how he would deal with that area and it didn't cause a problem. It's been a couple weeks since the installation and I've just painted the molding. The end result was very nice.

Joe returned my first call within a couple of hours and he actually stopped by my house to give me an estimate on his way home from a job that same day! He carefully looked over the problem area around the door to determine where and how water was probably getting in and rotting the door jamb. He explained how he could fix the problem and gave me an estimate. I phoned him back to schedule a time for the repair. As a courtesy, Joe checked in with us the night before the appointment. He arrived right on time, got to work, and completed the job to our great satisfaction. As agreed earlier, he also brought a ladder in order to check out and caulk a window that had been leaking. Before he left, I asked Joe to look at a few other items on our "list." Just as before, Joe gave me a fair price, called the night before, and arrived right on time. In each case, Joe protected my floor area with large sheets of cardboard and he cleaned up the area when finished. Some of the repair jobs may have been small ones, but it's a nice feeling to have these issues resolved. Joe is very responsive, courteous, and professional. He certainly seems to know what he's doing and works skillfully and efficiently. Thanks to Angie's List, we found Joe Cox!
Description of Work: Joe repaired the jamb around our front door to take care of a wood rot problem. He used material that would prevent future rot, painted and cauked around the area to prevent water problems. He also caulked around a window that has been leaking during rainstorms. On a second scheduled visit, Joe repaired a hole in our garage drywall, repaired pantry doors, and reconfigured the double doors into the unfinished part of our basement by installing a threshhold, sweep, and a t-astrigal to seal off the area from the finished part of the basement.
He returned my call within an hour. He tried to call my home phone and then cell phone to reach me. When I told him that we could go ahead with the work, he stopped by my house on his way back home. He was very responsive. He told me that a good percentage of his business was from the Angie's List recommendations. He tried to be responsive because he knew that the callers would try different service providers and hence he jumped on it. He seemed to know what he was doing and he was honest. He had a great sense of humour and seemed to use every minute to do his work. So far he has been great. I have already asked him to check on something else as well and see if he could fix it. He would be charging me $300. The jamb could take some time if it required cutting it out or replacing a piece to fix it. He would be putting a new weather stripping for me and doing some re-corking around the door. But I think it was really worth it as my husband could not do. I thought he gave me a honest figure for his time and the materials. I have painted the door but he would repaint it. I am not sure if the price was too much or too little. I just wanted the work to be done. He was neat as he covered everything that needed to be covered and was very careful with certain things. He was not wearing a suit but was very professional in terms of other things like calling me ahead of time, responsiveness and wanting to do the work. He has stepped out to get a cup of coffee as he has kept something for drying. He said that he would be back in half an hour and that is when he would be back.
Description of Work: I am using the services of Joe Cox Construction and Handyman for repairing a door that has wood rot and the jamb from the water, in my house. It is a wood work that requires carpentry. He also checked a leaky window for me but could not fix it as he could not figure out what the problem was. The problem could be in the insulation.

Joe responded promptly to my call for an estimate and provided the estimate within 24 hours. He was very helpful in suggesting the type of wood to use and agreed to paint the gate as well, even though he normally does not do painting. My work was scheduled within a week and was finished as promised. I am very pleased with the work done and highly recommend Joe.

Joe Cox did a great job! He answered the phone when I called and came out to give a free estimate within a day or two. Less than a week later he returned on a Sunday morning to fit us into his busy schedule at the exact time he said he would arrive. He worked quickly and the door came out great. He is very pleasant and knowledgeable. It's so nice to have a fence door that works! There were only two small negatives. One, we thought the price was a little high. But he did tell me in advance that he has a minimum charge to come out and the job was fairly small so if I had any other very small jobs to add, he would throw them in at no charge. So I asked him to rehang a single board that had fallen off our fence. He did that without a problem. He also said that he walked around the fence and hammered in any loose boards. We certainly appreciated that. The other small negative was that he had to replace two boards on the fence door and he did not stain them to match the rest of the wood (which we recently had power-washed and stained). I just assumed he would do that as part of the job, but did not specifically request that he do it. (We will pick up some stain and finish the job ourselves.) Overall, the two small negatives did not affect our opinion of Joe. He was friendly, approachable, and he did the job quickly and with high quality. We would definitely recommend him to friends and would use him again.

Joe was amazing to work with. He called me back with 30 minutes of leaving a voicemail and came by for an estimate that same week. When talking about the project and what we wanted he was able to give excellent advice about what would work and what wouldn't. We have a 40 inch wall mounted TV that we wanted to put on the pedestal and stand on the cabinet. Based on the space we have Joe was able to determine that the TV wouldn't sit safely on the cabinet and suggested that we just mount the TV into the cabinet wall instead which was safer and achieved the same result. Joe worked very quickly and took pretty much exactly how much time he said it would take. He came back the day the doors were finished (2 weeks after the job as he measured for the doors when he was finished building the cabinets) and installed them in a couple of hours.
Description of Work: We had two cabinets with shelving built around the fireplace with an additional fireplace mantle and crown moulding across the top. The shelves were built with poplar and birch with custom built maple cabinet doors (he sub contracted that work).

Joe paid close attention to detail, and the work was first rate in every regard. He is very responsive to the customer?s needs. He procures materials at the best available price. He gives good advice: we were pretty specific about what we wanted, and we found that his suggestions gave us an even better result. He turned an awkwardly-shaped room (one 19' wall and one ten-foot wall) with shabby details into a balanced, useful, and very attractive family room. The quality of work was excellent and the price was highly competitive. It provided excellent value for what I paid. I was very pleased with Joe Cox Construction & Handyman.

He did an excellent job and was very prompt when arriving to our home. He provided a list of his references and licenses upfront which instilled my confidence in him. The quote he gave me was for 3 days and he finished in two. I will definitely consider using him for future projects.
Description of Work: I hired him to install 7 interior doors as well as the door stops. Because my home is old and the floors are uneven, he had to do a lot of cutting on the top and bottom of the doors to ensure a proper fit. Aside from being a handyman, he is also an excellent finishing carpenter.

Discovered there was no insulation in my son's room. We agreed to cut an access hole in the ceiling to the separate attic area. Joe and his daughter brought it in and laid it out in the attic. The access hole is not visible through the door and hallway. He is very professional and detailed. It was just beautiful. Now that room has the best insulation in the house.
Description of Work: Added insulation into the attic and applied insulation on the closure panel.
I am extremely happy with the work Joe Cox did for us. When I first called to make an appointment for an estimate he was very busy, but he called me back promptly and worked to find a time to come by when I was available. He showed up when expected and seemed knowledgeable about the work we wanted done. Joe told us when he was going to show up to do the work and he was on time each day. We added a couple of extra items partway into the job (additional cracks to be repaired and the cabinet installation), and he worked over a weekend to finish these on our time line. The door frames in our row house are non-standard sizes, and he was able to make the new doors look like they've always belonged here. Overall, Joe was courteous, cleaned up after himself, started and finished on time, and did great work; you can't really ask for more than that! I'll certainly hire him again when we collect enough more tasks to make it worth his time.
Description of Work: Joe repaired many cracks in the plaster and drywall in our house, replaced five interior doors (3 bedroom doors & 2 bathroom doors), replaced a damaged window sill, fixed an area on our plaster wall and ceiling that had water damage, fixed a ceiling that had drywall falling down, installed a section of kitchen base cabinets, and framed out the cabinets for countertop installation.

Mr. Cox is an excellent trim carpenter. His work is meticulous and the results are just beautiful. His quotes were spot on. He finished in the estimated time. All the materials he used are first quality. We were impressed with his skill and finish work. When Mr. Cox went to build one of the closets he discovered a water leak in our wall. When the plumbing company I called suggested expensive and unnecessary work, Mr. Cox realized that I was being taken advantage of and suggested another plumber. Not only did I get beautiful built ins, I saved thousands on unnecessary plumbing repairs.
Description of Work: Mr. Cox built two closets/cabinets totally 19 feet in length. He built cabinets on either side of our fireplace, book shelves above the cabinets and a new mantle. In addition, he installed storm doors on the front and back of our house. He replaced two interior doors and repaired a third.

Of four estimates, Mr. Cox's was the lowest. I'm wary of understated costs, but his assessment of what could and ought to be done was the most helpful. He did the job well, making a small improvement over the original installation. He was prompt and tidy. He provided local references and a copy of his license.
Description of Work: I had my front porch replaced and needed the railings and posts re-installed. Surfaces affected were the stone, the vertical trim, and the overhanging roof. The horizontal surfaces had moved over the years so there was a little more involved than simply sliding the things back in.
