The JL Tree Service crew members trimmed 3 large trees and pruned 1 small tree. The crew did a great job and removed all wood and branches in a timely manner. The crew was very professional and polite. The company did quality work and at reasonable rate. I have used JL Tree Service, Inc. in past years and even used this company at my parents home. I would recommend this company to all.

J&L tree service did a fantastic job communicating with me concerning timelines and delays. I called to get an estimate the day before a hurricane which was then followed by a tropical storm. J&L called proactively to let me know that there would be a delay with giving me an estimate due to the storm's damage. Once the estimate was done, they arrived on time and removed a very large tree from the back yard that had been rain soaked from the two storms. I was very impressed by how little evidence they left of their work. There was a large stump cut close to the ground, two wood shavings and a foot long tire rut in the grass. With the amount of rain that has soaked the yard I was expecting tire tracks from the front yard to the back. They crown reduced the large maple and left no evidence of their work. They charged me $900 for the large tree removal and $450 to crown reduce the Maple and I had a 10% off coupon from Angie's List. My neighbor's tree service wanted $1500 to crown reduce the maple alone. I am very pleased and would recommend J&L Tree service to anyone.
Description of Work: I had a large tree removed in the back yard and a large maple crown reduced in a small side yard adjoining another property. They removed all wood and debris.

They did a great job and would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: They removed two medium sized trees. One Ash and one mulberry tree. Removed the mulberry tree stump and grind it out. They also removed a large oak stump and grind it out. We have a fireplace and kept the cut wood rounds to use next fall and winter. Their price was very competitive with other tree services in the area. Customer service is great...prompt response to questions through email.

got a free estimate of the work from Peter, if I was able to wait till November could get a good discount, Adam and his group arrived on time Wednesday morning, we discussed the work to be done, Adam and his workers were very polite and competent workers, they were busy all the hours they were here. A tree on the deck was removed (diseased) they skillfully cut it down with no apparent damage to my deck, another tree from the side yard was also cut down (winter damage from 3009) and other trees trimmed away from the house. They cleaned up all trimmings and saw dust with a blower, even went on roof to blow away saw dust from deck tree. I was very satisfied with their work and polite behaviour. I've used JL trees previously and have always been satisfied.
Description of Work: tree on deck, got two opinions from arborists re its condition, a huge black mushroom like a shelf on the tree appeared after rainstorm and dead branch with strange orange coloring, I thought tree needed trimming, but both arborists from two companies said it was diseased, evidenced by bird holes in bark, hated to part with it, deck was built around it, but went ahead and scheduled with JL, also other trees needed trimming and another tree damaged by winter 2009 was removed

I originally contacted the company in mid august and recieved a bid on my stump removal. Their bid was by far the lowest. On or around Aug. 22 or 23 I called the company and said that I wanted to hire them. Originally, the work was scheduled to be done at the beginning of the next week. In the middle of that next week the work had not been done yet so I called the company. They told me that due to Hurricane Irene they had a lot of emergency work and my job had gotten pushed back. Although it would have been nice to have that communicated, I was fine with it. I understand that things happen. The following week, I again called the company because my work had not been completed and no one had called me to give me any updates on the job. At this point, I honestly don't remember how many times I called but it was many. The company rarely called me back, and when they did they didn't provide me with any information, or didn't follow through on when they said they would come out. The work on my stump was finally finished Sept 12. Though their price was the lowest, it was definitely not worth the stress and lack of communication. I would not work with them again.
Description of Work: I had a 4-5 foot stump ground down into mulch.

We apologize for lack of communication. It was a very busy time with Hurricane Irene, we removed over 25 trees from houses. Unless there was a priority stump, we were fully focused on emergency storm damage. Also, the weather kept us from coming at least once to do this job. We do need to be better about calling people though. We will do better next time.

A large section of a 60-foot cherry tree crashed onto our deck during the hurricane. We called JL Tree Service the next day. John came out and gave us an estimate around noon, and at 4:00 a crew came to remove the debris and cut the limb flush to the tree. They did a great job, and we were amazed to have it all cleaned up that day. The estimate was for $950, so after the 10% off Angie's List coupon we paid $855. In addition, we accepted his estimate of $1600 to cut down the rest of the tree ($1440 after the 10% coupon), and the crew came back that Thursday and did a great job removing the tree and debris. Again, we were really happy with their responsiveness and with the quality of the work. We've used JL Tree Service many times over the years and have been very happy with them.

An estimator came to the property to evaluate the job and left the estimate at the front door. I did not need to be present. Once I decided to do the work, I called the office to schedule a time. The person on the phone could have been more friendly, but all was still handled professionally. It was not possible to actually schedule a date for service but I was told the job could be done sometime within 2 weeks. I would receive a call when the service team was available. I received a call the day before service was going to be performed. Fortunately, I was not traveling and could acknowledge the service date. I would have preferred more notice. I was not present on the day of service so I can't comment on the actual service team. However, the team did an incredible job of removing the trees. There was no evidence of the trees remaining. All debris was picked up and removed. I was very pleased in the end and was happy I used this company.

It's been over a week and while the other five tree care companies have already been by and given me very reasonable estimates, I have yet to hear from anyone from JL Tree Service. I guess I won't be giving them my business.
Description of Work: I called JL Tree Service, Inc., as well as five other tree care companies on Angie's List, last Thursday and spoke to a young lady by the name of Emily. I explained to her that I wanted to discuss possible pruning and/or tree and stump removal of our cherry tree out front with a professional arborist. She took my name, phone number and address and said someone would get back to me 'shortly'.

I requested a quote through the firm's website and received a prompt response that an estimator would be assigned. It took about a week to receive the estimate and required a follow-up email. The quote was competitive and lower than the other two that I had received. Once I accepted the quote it took a few days before someone contacted me. Once again, I had to initiate the follow-up. The JL staff told me that it takes about a week from acceptance to actually perform the work. I was trimming my tree back to comply with a request from my HOA, which required a quicker response time. I shared this and was told my case would be elevated. A scheduler called me back in a few hours and it was smooth sailing after that. Bottom line: if you have tree maintenance and need a quick response time, let them know. I really wanted to work with JL so the sluggishness in responding was just a minor inconvenience. I would use the firm again.

JT Tree Removal responded promptly by email to my query for a quote and each time I had questions. The came within a week to give an estimate. They did the work within two weeks. They only thing they didn't do that I asked was to give me a day or two notice before they came to do the work. As it turned out, it didn't matter as I was home the morning they called to say they were on the way, but it could have.

A freakish storm came through the DC metro area on Sun., June 12th, dropping a lot of rain in a short period of time which caused our neighbor's 70 ft old (dying, as we later found out) silver maple to break close to ground level and topple onto our house. It landed on the corner above our master bedroom, crashing through roof and damaging 5 trusses. Large sections of ceiling sheetrock and insulation landed on bed and floor. Our insurance co. said to not remove the tree until the adjuster could make an assessment, so we had a tree crew out to simply place a tarp to protect against further water damage if another rainstorm should start up. Adjuster came out in the morning, recommended a clean up crew (I'm also doing a review for them) and JL Tree Service. Clean up crew showed up within a couple of hours to begin the work, and while they were here, JL (John) came by to assess the situation. Within a few minutes he came up into the damaged room and asked us if we had anything of value. We said, "No, not really" (our house was supposed to go to closing the following week, so most of our belongings were packed up). It was then that John looked at us and the cleaning crew and asked, "Do you value your lives? I'm hearing popping and creaking as this tree is bearing down on the house, and it could continue down at any moment. I recommend you close off this room and don't allow anyone in here until the tree is removed." Well, that was all we needed to hear. (Cleaning crew decided to come back the next day). JL Tree Service came out with crane about 1-2 hrs. later and meticulously removed the tree. We were astounded and held our breath as they moved multi-ton pieces over the house. They had amazing team work with a couple of guys signaling to the "blind" crane operator (who relied on them since he was on our driveway with the house between him and the tree) and performed with great precision. We had several neighbors come to watch the event, as it was quite spectacular! Not only were they professsional and friendly, but the price was extremely reasonable. The first crew that placed the tarp (and not well, either) was going to charge $5,500 just for the tree. JL gave us a quote of $2975. They only added $750 on top of that due to the incidental tree damage they discovered later. (Another neighbor tree was damaged as the original one fell, and there were dangerous limbs hanging.) The silver lining is that our neighbors and anyone else in an established neighborhood have received a wake-up call. This is what I've learned from my insurance adjuster: If it's a neighbor's tree that is threatening your property, get a certified tree expert (arborist, for ex.) to make an assessment. If it's determined to be diseased/dying send that opinion to your neighbor via certified mail, asking him/her to please remove the tree. If there is no response, you have to make the decision whether to remove it yourself (to save your belongings, and possibly your life or your family's) or let it eventually fall, and then have your insurance co. pursue your neighbor's insurance co. The only chance that the latter will happen is if you have everything thoroughly documented. So the biggest decision is whether it's worth the cost to be proactive and potentially save lives and possessions. Lastly, the tarp covering the open roof was expertly put into place and has withstood winds and very heavy rain since the event! Not a single drop has fallen into the house. We are SO relieved. It was pretty scary when the HUGE, long downpours followed in the next several days after the original event. We are grateful to JL Tree Service!!! (By the way, our incident was discovered by the local news WJLA-- they ran a story about the storm damage, and featured our house http://www.wjla.com/articles/2011/06/storms-in-the-region-cause-damage--62184.html )
Description of Work: Thunderstorm caused neighbor's old maple to topple onto our house. Tree was extracted from house and removed, as well as several limbs from nearby damaged trees. Everything completely hauled away.

J&L were prompt and professional. We have used them before for tree removal. They were the best price and recommended the least drastic work -- but we felt that their estimates focused on clearing away the dead limbs and did not go as much into arborist recommendations regarding the health of our trees. We did not use them for this service because the company we did select had suggestions to deep feed the struggling trees. J&L have done work for us before and were fantastic and very price reasonable. I would use them again for tree service when I knew exactly what work needs to be done,

The current job involved the removal of four large trees and one small tree – and grinding of the stumps: Three (3) trees were very large --- 38”- 45” trunk diameters near the ground and over 100+ feet in heights; one (1) tree was large (30” trunk diameter and 70 feet tall); and, one (1) much smaller tree. Proposals were obtained from six (6) companies, all of which were recommended on Angie's List; five (5) of these carried Super Service Awards. The selection was eventually narrowed to the three (3) companies that advertised expertise in the installation of lightning protection. The job eventually went to JL Tree and, true to the company’s web site, the work proved to be of the highest quality and very reasonable, especially compared to the other proposals. Of special note was the opinion of a JL arborist (certified and card-carrying) who questioned the wisdom of the installation of lightning protection on one of our trees. The tree, a huge poplar, had been struck by lightning more than a decade ago, and currently presented to us as a healthy, specimen tree (except for the residual damage visible on the lower trunk). Two companies provided proposals for lightning protection, following cursory inspection and without question. However, the JL arborist (1) questioned the wisdom of the expense of lightning protection on such a tree and (2) cautioned as to the potential for property damage caused by a tree downed by heavy winds. Importantly, the question of liability was also raised by the arborist. Examination of the tree was conducted and proved that the decay had extended about 70% of the distance into the tree. Accordingly, we decided that this majestic tree had to be added to the list for removal. The removal of these trees required the better part of three days, and the use of a large crane for each tree. And, the grinding of the huge stumps required another full day. We are not inexperienced when it comes to major tree work and our first consideration is high-quality tree work. Price is important, but not the No. 1 consideration. Nevertheless, JL was by far the least expensive for this current large undertaking. None of the proposals proffered by the other five companies came close – and two (2) of these highly-regarded companies were twice as expensive (and both failed to identify the unhealthy state of the tree that was to be lightning protected). Two (2) of the companies that provided proposals would be quite satisfactory for smaller jobs, but this job required the experience and equipment usually found with a larger company. JL Tree has our vote for any future tree work, large or small. Not all tree services are created equal and, as regards quality and price, JL is a win-win tree service.
Description of Work: Consultation with certified arborist re: tree work. Initially, remove three very large trees (oak, poplar, and wild cherry) and a smaller tree (evergreen). Grind stumps. Also: Provide estimate for lightning protection (very large poplar tree). Arborist questioned health of this poplar, and examination (drilling, etc.) was conducted. Due to unhealthy poplar, decision made to remove this tree.

I got 4-5 quotes from different vendors -- only top-rated firms on Angie's List -- to have a very large tree removed. JL Tree was the best price. I worked out the details with them via email and phone. They arrived the day they said they would and removed the tree, quickly and cleanly. They arrived about a week later, as promised, to grind the stump. The whole thing went very well.
Description of Work: Excellent price and generally good service. So, I'd recommend them highly. The only relatively minor issue was them being a bit slow on communication at times. Otherwise, they were the lowest price and they delivered everything they promised on schedule.

We called and received a quote from JL Tree Service to remove a large cherry tree from our front yard and grind up the stump. We had also told the scheduler that we wanted to have the grindings hauled off. We had received 4 quotes from different companies, and JL came in with the lowest bid. The crew had the tree cut down and all the branches/parts loaded up and in the truck before I came home from work. My husband and I were at the house when the tree stump was grinded up. I noticed that the worker with him was putting all the grindings in the hole and was leaving a pile of grindings behind. We told the guy that grinded up the stump that the grindings were to be hauled away, but he said this was not on the paperwork, He said that he would call the crew and have them come back and pick up the grindings but they never came back. My husband and I hauled away the grindings and leveled the front lawn. Other than the hauling of the grindings not getting taken care of, we are very happy with the service we received and would use them again. They cut down a hickory tree and grinded up 8 tree stumps for us about 2 years ago, and we were happy with the service we received then also.
