JL Tree Service Inc

JL Tree service gave us an estimate for the work in August. When we were ready to schedule service, we accepted their proposal on Sept 12. We were told we would get a call in the next few days and that the work would be done within two weeks. After three weeks had passed and we had not heard from anyone, I emailed the office and was told that someone would call me in 3 days. After another two weeks passed, I still had not heard from anyone. I emailed the office and explained that if the work could not be completed within one week I needed to know so that I could contact another company to perform the work. I did not hear back from the office. About 3 days later I got a phone call that the technician was at my house. I came home to the stump removed and a bill in the mailbox. I was satisfied with the work, but was very disappointed with the customer service and responsiveness of this company.

The crew was professional, polite and eager to please. The scope of clearing wasn't defined in detail in the contract but they cleared out everything we asked for, and did not cut corners. All of the work was well done. Their clean up was excellent. I will hire again.

They gave us a quote promptly, came in significantly lower than anyone else, and then did the work quickly and well. I am very very happy to have found them, and I will definitely use them again.

The rates quoted were very competitive and the work was done professionally.There was a slight delay in scheduling due to the fact that the tree split about 1 week prior to the June 29, 2012 derecho. As you know, that presented a great volume of work to tree companies. However, my job was not emergency work and I waited until the rush subsided.

The entire Washington, DC/northern Virginia area experienced a severe storm in late spring early summer. The storm felled trees all over the area, with many falling on homes. Our front yard maple was effected, breaking a large limb which also damaged another tree in the yard, and it also blocked the walk way to our house. I made an appointment with JL Tree the day after the storm (driving to their offices as their phones were out.) I was told that their priroities would be trees that fell on houses, and I understood that. However, weeks went by and we received no word from the company at all. I occasionally called to see what our status would be, which resulted in either being totally ignored (no call back) or apparent rudeness on the phone. On the few occasions I actually spoke with a person, I was told the scheduler would call me back - he never did. After about 8 weeks, I gave up and called another company. Interestingly, they also had a full backed up schedule from the storm two months previous, but they came out immediately, and they did the work in three days.I understand how major storms can effect schedules, etc, and can alter previous plans for these companies. But it takes NOTHING to treat customers (yes, we had used them before) with common courtesy. It takes NOTHING to return a call in a professional manner. What JL Tree didn't seem to realize is that,eEventually, storm damage is removed, and business returns to normal. I would venture to guess that their customer service would improve, as they would then be competing with dozens of other tree services in the area for routine business. But this company will never get our business again.

Everything turned out pretty good! I'd never seen anyone do this type of work so it was interesting to watch. The people who came out were excellent.

They responded quickly, sent an estimator, and he gave a fair estimate.The estimator said they could remove the stumps w/ a crane. He set a date for them to come...They came one day and did a lot of work - all day.Then they never came back, until I called and said they needed to finish the job in the next 5 days. A crew came back a day before the deadline, and did not finish.I was out of town, and they never came, so my wife had to call to get them to come back - they sent a small crew to "work on the rear stump, and got it down about 33%.We then went on vacation and I had to send a nasty-gram to get them to come back - and by the time we got back from vacation it was finally done. When they come they do great work - but I would expect better communication skills from management. (Thus the "B") I recommend not hiring them for multi-day jobs unless the schedule is part of the contract (and they lose money if they don't meet it.)

J L Tree provided the lowest estimate and did an excellent job. The crew stayed busy for almost 12 hours. A 100 foot cherry tree was taken down a piece at a time with no collateral damage to a nearby garage, garden, or yard structures. Everything was cleaned up and hauled off without a trace of residue except some unrakeable sawdust. Great job.

Not well in that they never called me to schedule the service

Bottom Line: -JL Tree destroyed property causing in excess of $1000 in damage. -JL Tree acknowledges the damage, has paid for half of it but despite repeated promises refuses to send a landscaping crew to fix remaining damage stating that there are more important customers. -Customer has been chasing JL Tree for 68+ Days. -Customer has filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. -Pending filing action in Loudoun small claims court. JL Tree was contracted to remove 4 medium sized trees and grind the stumps. During stump removal JL Tree failed to lay down plywood underneath the stump grinder resulting in damaged lawn, landscaping, garden pathway and a collapsed french drain. JL Tree agreed to have the french drain installer come and repair the french drain at their cost and to send their landscaper over to repair the damaged landscaping and garden path. JL Tree finally paid for the french drain costs but to date have not repaired the landscaping or garden path which is a safety hazard due to broken and uneven stones. Customer had to take numerous afternoons off of work in order to manage french drain estimates, meet with JL Tree to assess damage and finally had to spend an entire summer chasing JL Tree to do what they said they would do but haven't. In summary ? contract with at your own risk: -Responsiveness: F -Quality of Work: F -Price: F -Customer Service: F UPDATE: After posting this review JL Tree sent a crew to repair the remaining damage. The repair was very well done.However, I will still note that it took in excess of 70 days and countless email exchanges for them to repair the damage.

40 feet of the top of a 75 foot tall oak tree broke and fell on our roof & deck overnight. Suspect it was caused by lightning. We called 3 tree services the next morning (Saturday). Two had answering machines - messages left. JL had an actual human answering the phone. Message was taken, and within an hour, Steve arrived to look the situation over and give an estimate. He said he had a crew that could come out the same day. The crew was on a difficult job which took longer than anticipated. Although we expected them earlier, they did arrive at 6pm. There were 5 workers and a giant crane. Using the crane, the limbs were carefully lifted over our house to the curb. They worked about 2 hours, taking down all the broken limbs, then cleaned up the roof area, our deck, and the yard. We used their Angie's List coupon to get a 10% discount off of $2500 estimated fee.

. I called JL Tree Services. I spoke with a representative to book my appointment. The individual who came out was professional in every sense of the word. They provided me with an extremely reasonable quote. The night before the work was to be done, another employee called me to provide a time the service would be rendered. The next day the workers were on time. They did a superior job removing three trees from my back yard. They cleaned up, and even removed some old dead leaves on the sideline. I was very pleased with JL Tree Service's fair prices and excellent work. I recommend them highly to anyone looking for a Tree Service.

On the positive side, the arborist who came out to examine our tree appeared knowledgeable and was professional. We contracted with J & L to have the tree taken down with the understanding that once we assessed how much sunlight the area received with the tree gone, we would make a decision about having the stump drilled out. The crew that came out on June 4 to take the tree down was very competent, courteous, and professional and thoroughly cleaned up after themselves. We were very positively impressed. Because we could see that the area was going to receive quite a bit of sun, I called that same day to arrange for the stump drilling. I was told that Miss Utility would have to come out first and that I could expect to hear back from J & L some time after that had been done. Someone would probably call in around a week to set up an appointment to come out and drill out the stump. Now for the negative side. Imagine our surprise then, to learn that the stump-removal crew had come to our house on the morning of June 6 (i.e., two days later), and without our knowledge or permission, had entered our property, removed a fence gate, brought their equipment onto our property and drilled out the stump while we were out running errands. (This was witnessed by our next-door neighbor). They had called while we were out and left a message saying that they were coming and if it wasn't convenient to call back right away. Obviously since we were not home, we couldn't do that. Miss Utility had never even come out to check for utility lines. We never allow work to be done on our property when we are not there to oversee it. This was totally unacceptable and is the reason this organization's rating plummeted from an "A" to an overall low "C." The Angie's List rating categories don't cover a situation like this, so we chose to rate them low on both responsiveness and punctuality (in this case, coming out inappropriately ahead of schedule).

A first visit was done to provide an estimate and then they were able to do the work the next day due to a cancellation. Three guys who obviously knew what they were doing and were experts came out and over two days removed the tree. It was huge and VERY tall. One of the much more experienced guys climbed the tree and methodically took down branches using a chainsaw and ropes so that the falling branches were controlled. They took their time, were patient, and friendly and took pride in their work. They even worked with my neighbor who was interested in some of the wood. They cleaned up everything. They were simply awesome and I am very thankful.

They did a good job and their prices were most competitive.

A wonderful experience. They did the work well, were very professional, communicated with us, and when something needed adjusting or fixing, they did so with no hassle or delay.

They completed the work within 4 days of the request. They were prompt, reliable, friendly, and left the work area clean.

The work was all performed as quoted. We felt that they didn't suggest unnecessary work. We will use them in the future.

They are really good and the last time we used them was to have several trees taken out, and I had one huge tree that needed to be cut and taken out, so they came in with the crane and didn’t damage anything else. They are very professional and very reasonable and I always get the lowest bid from them. I rate them highly. I will use them again in the future.

As new owners of a house, we needed diseased, severely girdled, and dead trees removed from our back yard. This was not cosmetic work; all of the trees removed were sick or badly damaged and two very large white oaks soon could have become dangerous. Peter did the estimate for JL Tree Service. I was pleased he understood my need at this time to separate critical from cosmetic tree work. JL Tree cut down the trees, cleared the branches and trunks, ground the stumps, and hauled away the grindings in a professional manner. Wilmey and his crew had to contend with other large trees, the deck, and the house being nearby. They did the job without harm to other trees or structures, which was impressive given that one of the large sick trees was growing through an opening in the deck that made its removal challenging. The crane operator who picked up the many, many large trunk sections that had been taken to the street did his job neatly and carefully. The stump grinder was thorough (JL Tree had Miss Utility check the yard before this part of the job) and when the men were done collecting the stump grindings our yard was left very clean. Everyone on every part of the job was polite and good natured and they went out of their way to provide exceptional service. They seemed to take pride in their work and their company. We've lived in other wooded areas in other parts of the country, so we've had experience dealing with tree removal companies. JL Tree Service is among the best.

They arrived at 8:00 am, took down the tree, removed the wood and were packed up and gone by 11:00 am. A week later they came by to grind the stump. That took less than an hour.

Everything was excellent and I’d give them the highest marks on everything, from the estimate all the way up to the finished job.

The day after I first contacted JL, an estimator called to say he could come by that afternoon, Tuesday. I compared the estimate with another Angie's list company and chose JL because of price, the Angie's list rating, reports I read, the discount offered and because someone I knew had used the service in the past. I called the office to accept the bid and emailed the terms and the work was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Hector, the crew's supervisor, called Thursday to ask if 1:30 would be okay with me and they arrived promptly at that time. They identified the work to be done and took down one very tall tree and another medium size tree that was growing through my deck. The large tree was in a wooded area and did not require stump removal. They did an excellent job of cutting the stump of the other tree level with the deck, and taking care that no damage was done to the deck during the tree removal. The crew used ropes to brace the trees while cutting them down. It was fascinating to watch them work. They removed all of the wood and brush from the trees, cleaned up sawdust and chips on the deck and in the yard to the point that no one would have known work had been done. Throughout the afternoon, the crew was cheerful as well as amazingly skillful at their occupation. Hector was very courteous in his dealings with me. I couldn't be more pleased to recommend the service to Angie's list readers and my friends as well.

The job was done in a very professional and as- bid manner. I have hired JL on several occasions over the last 12 years, and will do so as needed in the future.

Receptionist/scheduler was friendly and effective, until she passed it to the team lead to do actual scheduling. That response was pretty delayed. I put no urgency on scheduling, just asked for a date. It appears though that this is common for tree trimming services -- others were just as slow to respond or just didn't. Once the date was scheduled though, the team was on time and was very professional in completing the job.
