+ -1 moreThis company seems too busy and not in need of my business. I repeatedly called to schedule fertilizer services; I was told someone would call me back to no avail. By the time I finally was able to speak to someone, the season to fertilize was over. I wasted valuable time attempting to schedule treatment. I complaint to the receptionist about the lack of responsiveness, she promised a manager would call me. I have not heard from anyone and contacted other companies who will actually need the business.

+ -1 moreI called to get an estimate for whether a couple of trees in the yard might need to be removed (they had grown very tall and one was leaning towards the house). Steve called back within a couple of days to schedule the estimate - they were running 1-3 days behind schedule due to the heavy rains and multiple downed trees in the area. Steve was very professional and thorough in his assessment; we ended up going with JL Tree service based on their reviews here. We were able to get scheduled for the tree removal itself within a week; the crew (of 3) arrived promptly and went right to work. They were also very safe with fall protection and work gear and assessed how to take down this very tall tree in a small area. Tree removal took the better part of a day, since it was so tall. They hauled the wood out to the curb for a company truck to pick up the next day (which they did). Stump removal was supposed to be scheduled with us about a week later, but someone came out 5 days later, knocked on the door, and got right to work. I was referred to this company from an acquaintance, and checked their reviews on AL first - I would definitely use them again and refer them to anyone needing tree services in the area!

+ -1 moreJL Tree Service came out quickly to provide an estimate for the work. Their price for removing the trees was better than other estimates we obtained. We were scheduled within a week. They were professional and on-time and completed the work within a day. They also ground the stumps. We called them out a second time to grind the stumps of a few large bushes we removed.
Description of Work: I needed to have some trees removed from my backyard, including a tall oak tree that had died and was leaning toward the neighbors' house.

+ -1 moreProvider had a reasonable quote, so we signed the contract to schedule work. We called after about 9 days because we never heard back to have the job scheduled. They apologized and said they would be in touch soon. They called the next Tuesday and said they would come on Wednesday afternoon and we said great! I took the day off of work so I could be home to let them into the yard and show them what needed to be done exactly. They never showed up and called late in the day to say they needed to come Thursday morning between 10-11 instead. I was frustrated but said OK. I told them it was important that they start in the window indicated. I stayed home from work again... however, they never showed up and didn't call until after 1200 to say they weren't going to make it. Very unprofessional.

+ -1 moreJL Tree quickly provided a very competitive price estimate. From there, we had a 5-6 month time period where we tried repeatedly to schedule the job with no success. To be fair, we had to coordinate with Dominion power also, and involving 2 companies always slows things down. When we finally got everything scheduled in May (after signing the agreement in October), they did a wonderful job. The crew was efficient, took great care to protect our yard, garden and plants, and cleaned up thoroughly. I would certainly use them again if the need arises.

+ -1 moreSince May 18, I have not heard anything from JL tree. It has been more than 2 weeks and no one has contacted me. I patiently waited but today I contacted JL tree over the phone and the rep said they would put reminder in. Great! Awful service.
Description of Work: Jl tree sent me an email after I requested a tree estimate. The email said that they would respond in 1-2 weeks with an estimate, or at least a phone call.

+ -1 moreSent them request via their website and received a response the next day saying their estimator " will leave a proposal at your door and/or email you a copy of your proposal within the next 2 to 3 business days" A week later I sent them an email asking about status of the estimate. They said they sent it they day prior but it may have gone into THEIR junk mail folder? Anyway, they attached it with the email and all it included was the price to remove 3 dead trees + cleanup...nothing about pruning the 3 large trees. After that I was done with them and moved on to another tree service.
Description of Work: Requested estimate for removing 3 dead trees, prune 2 large pine trees and 1 large magnolia.

+ -1 moreWe were not happy with the workmanship. We wanted careful, fine pruning of our tree by a certified arborist. Turns out, only the salesmen are certified; no one on the crew who does the work is a certified arborist. The cutting that was done did not comply with ANSI 300 standards as their website claims. They are really a tree removal company. They are not the ones to call if you need expert tree care. Their website says all of the right things, but they do not practice what they claim. On the other hand, they were polite, responsive and cleaned up the site well. They would probably be good if you have a tree removal needs.
Description of Work: We requested high quality, light pruning of a tree that is very special to us. What we got was a fairly hard cutting back of our tree that did not follow ANSI 300 pruning standards.

+ -1 moreThe crew was great! They clearly have been working together with J L Tree service for a long time as they cut down the tree with expertise. They methodically and carefully lowered the entire tree so it would not damage surrounding fences and structures. They also carefully carried out the tree from the backyard on their backs and shoulders so it would not damage the grass. They cleaned up the work site better than the way it look when it started. And the price was fantastic as I was ready to pay a few hundred dollars more for the job!

I could have been happier with the work.The price was half of other companies were getting. One feature is that they don’t really negotiate the price. They picked the diamond of the tree. They calculate the amount of cutting time that’s involved. Once they gave me the price, it’s invariably, in my experience, work would be better.

+ -1 moreThey did an excellent job. They let me know when they will come in good time. What really impressed me was I also had two tree stumps to be grounded and the machine broke down. Obviously it is just one of those things. It broke down badly and I thought it would probably be a long time before they came back. They did it on a Friday. And later that afternoon they came back and they finished the job. They cleaned up very nicely. They workers here were courteous and nice to work with. So I can't get better service than that. I got three quotes and this was the lowest quote. I was quite satisfied with the price.

+ -1 moreAll four employees of JL Tree Service worked as a team to complete the job skillfully. Their teamwork, professionalism, and skill were admirable. We were impressed and would recommend them and would use them again.
Description of Work: Before doing this work, I asked JL Tree Service to talk to our insurance company, because the insurance company gave us a lower estimate of the work. I called two companies from two different cities to get estimates. Both companies gave us the same cost estimate. JL Tree Service talked to our insurance representative, who revised the estimate upward. The insurance company has worked with JL Tree Service before, which factored into their decision. JL Tree Service removed a tree that had fallen on our house. With a crane, they brought the tree to the ground. Then they stripped it of all leaves and small branches. They used the crane to lift it over the house, from the back to the front. Then they put the tree and branches in a wood shredder they put in front of the house. The operator of the crane was very skilled. They carried the chips away in trucks. When the tree originally fell and hit our house (in September), it hit another tree before it hit the house, and it damaged that tree. The crane operator lifted a man in a harness into the damaged tree. This worker cut the broken/damaged branches from the tree. There was a third tree that we wanted to have trimmed of a branch that extended in the direction of our house. This was a separate job from that of removing the tree that hit our house, but it was accomplished on the same day. We asked JL Tree Service to bill us separately for this job, which they did. All the parts of the tree that fell, the damaged tree branches, and the single branch from the third tree were removed. Neighbors came out from their homes to watch this impressive operation.

+ -1 moreI researched various top rated companies on Angieslist for the tree trimming service. JL tree representative Peter showed up on time. He looked at the work i had in mind ( trimming two trees) and recommended few other trees/branches that should be trimmed. His approach was very professional and courteous. I scheduled the appointment and the tree guys from JL tree showed up on time. There was a bit of anxiety as I was not able to reach them in the morning to find out what time they will come.A phone call before starting the work would have been great - as you do not have to be at the house when the tree work is being done. The did a great job though and cleaned up pretty good afther their work. Overall great work.
Description of Work: Trimming of maple and other trees in the front of the house. Trimming of shrubs on the side of house and other trees in the backyard.

+ -1 moreBoth the actual work and the customer orientation were excellent. This was true from my initial contact with the company through the work completion and payment. Everything was very efficient from the company representative who inspected the "offending trees" and gave us both a price quote and a copy of the company's insurance, through the actual work by a most professional crew with a crane and shredder and large open bed truck, to the polite office personel who processed everything and provided us with an email of the paid invoice.
Description of Work: JL Tree Service removed three extremely large oaks that were bending over our house.

+ -1 moreOverall it was a great experience. The cost was very reasonable for the amount of trimming that was done, and they provided it very promptly. The individuals that came to do the work were professional and got everything taken care of quickly. The only complaint is that they showed up about 2-3 hours early. We were told they would be there at ~11am and they showed up around 8am. They were lucky we were there since we often go out in the morning, but no harm, no foul.
Description of Work: We had a number of trees on our property trimmed to get their branches away from the house.

+ -1 moreTwo tall hemlocks in my yard were uprooted during Hurricane Sandy and fell onto my neighbor's roof and chimney. My neighbor got 2 quotes from tree companies that were too high so I called 3 companies from Angie's List to get quotes. The owner from JL Tree Service came out the same day I called and gave me a great quote. My trees leaning on my neighbor's roof didn't cause an emergency situation, but I did ask the company if they could move me ahead of regularly scheduled work so my neighbors could use their fireplace for Thanksgiving. They did the work about 10 days later - much earlier than I expected. I had a third tall hemlock that was starting to lean over removed as well. Everyone I talked to at the firm was very courteous and professional. I would definitely hire them again.

+ -1 moreI was very pleased with the entire process. They provided their estimate a few days after I called them. They were the lowest priced estimate. They cut the trees down a few days after I faxed the proposal back to them. And they came back to grind the stump two days after that. They cleaned up all the debris when they cut the trees, so you couldn't even tell they had been there.
Description of Work: Cut down two trees, one 20ft high arborvitae and one 20ft high japanese maple. They also ground out one stump.

+ -1 moreI called to have them give me an estimate, and they had someone out 2 days later who gave me a written estimate. I emailed a signed copy to their office to request scheduling the work. It took them 2 days to acknowledge receipt of the request but they were apologetic for the delay and explained it would be in the next 2 weeks, and the team would schedule the work 3 days prior. At the end of two weeks I got a call from the team foreman and he scheduled for after 2pm the following Thursday. They did not show up until 4pm on the day of the work, but they did do a good and efficient job once they arrived and removed all brush and cleaned up the site after the trees were removed.
Description of Work: I had two tall trees very close to my house removed, with above-ground wires very near to the trees.

Description of Work: I have been in the landscaping business for more than 15 years so I know a great deal about tree work. Without exception JL exceeded all my expectations. They were technically excellent, all of the crew members were very pleasant and worked together as a very effective team. They were very safety oriented and constantly communicated while removing a very large twin trunk oak.The tree they removed required a crane. The operator was phenominal in his control of the crane. The clean up of the job was fantastic. Other than the opening in the sky where the tree once stood, you would not have known they just removed a 100' tree with 2 trunks. JL also removed an equally large tree that fell through the roof of my brother-in-laws house during Hurricane Sandy. Under the most difficult circumstances, in the rain, in an extremely confined area, the same crane operator that did my job removed the tree from the roof and inside the second floor of the house without causing any further damage to the house. I cannot say enough about JL. I will recommend JL to anyone.

+ -1 moreI used JL in the past and recently tried to use them again, but canceled the contract. Their prices were competitive and their initial work was good. However, with follow-on work they came up short. My most recent experience I found that their scheduling and communication was poor. When I tried to call the front office I would never receive a call back. We had a date scheduled, soon after the recent hurricane, but they never followed up to confirm if they were actually going to show (and in the end didn't) even after I called multiple times leading up to the appointment. I completely understand that others were in far greater need of their services - just wish they returned just one of my calls saying they weren't going to show. With the previous job - the workers did a great job, however when the stump removal team arrived they didn't understand which stump they were suppose to remove. Finally, I had to work with JL a few times to get the bill right - the biller was nice, but it still took some time to correct a few errors. With the number of tree service companies in the area you have options... consider going elsewhere. JL's prices are competitive - the work is good - just don't rely on them to actually call you or show up when they say they will. It's obvious they have a strong backlog and really didn't need or want our business nor or in the future.
Description of Work: Latest - estimate for the removal of a large tree near the house (cancelled the contract) Past - removal of two trees along the property line and the removal of one stump.

+ -1 moreThis is the second time I have used JL Tree Service and have been very pleased with each experience and would recommend them. From the estimate to completion of the job all employees were very courteous - whether in person or over the phone. The estimator arrived on time, I submitted the signed contract, the company contacted Miss Utility then called me and scheduled the work. The only bump during this experience was that I was called one afternoon and was told I was scheduled for about 8 days out - which was fine. However, as I was out the next morning I received a call that the work was done. This was actually great news since I was ready to proceed with additional planting - but I do wish I had been called ahead to let me know they were coming earlier so I could have been there during the work. The gentlemen, however, did wait at my request allowing me time to drive home from about 10 minutes away. I was very pleased with the work , however it was found that 5 of our stepping stones (about 24 x 30 inches each ) were cracked by the heavy equipment. This surprised me as the estimator did say that they would lift the stones with a crow bar and put them back. The damage was written up and the company promptly came out and replaced the stones. The crew which replaced the stones was very courteous and genuinely concerned that I was pleased with the repairs before leaving. It's good to know that the company stands behind their work and any repairs any unexpected damage. I will definitely use them for future tree work and would recommend them without hesitation.
Description of Work: Three (3) tree stumps (approx. 9-10 inches in diameter) and related roots were ground to create a well for future planting.

+ -1 moreTheir service was fine. They charged me $650 for the service which was a low bid. They called when they were about to arrive to do the work and once the job was complete. I was not there when they did the work. They actually were able to come sooner than later in comparison to other companies. The administrative people, the estimator; Mr. Low, were both very pleasant to work with, as was the gentleman who actually performed the service. They invoiced me afterwards; I did not have to prepay or anything. I was able to simply mail in a check. They initially provide a date for someone to come get me an estimate and then they emailed the estimate to me the next day. They told me a date that I could get the work done, which was fairly soon; within 7-8 days later. They actually showed up when they were supposed to. It was a very good experience and went like clockwork. They did take all the debris away.
Description of Work: They cut down two 44-foot weed trees that had come through concrete on a patio. The diameter of the tree trucks were between 4 to 6 inches.
