We set an appointment for our AC not working about a week ago. The appointment day arrives and we are scheduled for 12-5. I took a half day off work to meet the tech. He did not arrive till nearly 8pm. The tech looked tired. Looking at our AC system for 10 min he then asked me "where is the filter". Being as he is the technician...I was sorta hoping he would be able to find that tid-bit on his own. Seems the compressor went out on my system. He did not even give me the option to replace the compressor, just told me a salesman would be in touch to sell me a new system. What is the point in having a repairman come, if he is not going to repair it? Then, he has me sign the service ticket, but will not leave a copy with me? First off, if I sign it...I had better get a copy...but not according to this company! Not only will I not buy a AC unit from this company, but I wonder...what else is going on here. I'm getting a 2nd opinion ASAP.

They came out and said we needed more freon, which they filled. I contacted them for another deal from a flier to have them look at a leak and when they came out, they stated it wasn't worth pursuing further. However, the third time someone came out, they found a broken wire. The worker said he would be able to repair the issue. I received a horrendous bill in the mail for them to basically twist two wires together. Come to find out later, we never had a leak, as specified by another company. I felt that they outright lied about the status of my equipment. When I called, I feel that I was pawned off on someone else. I ended up paying the invoice, but they won't receive another dime from me.
Description of Work: They sent out a flier for a heating and AC offer that I took them up on.

They seemed a little pushy about having someone out to so recommendations about replacing our system. They come when they say they are going to come and they are prompt. We belong to a service plan that ensures us service within 24 hours and they always make good on that. The work that they do is always high quality.
Description of Work: They came and did a maintenence check. They said that I may need a new condenser. They replaced some parts. They also looked at our water heater about 10 years ago.

The sales representative explained alternatives clearly. The work was scheduled quickly and performed on time. Two technicians were present. Both were completely professional and helpful. We called for a service visit once to check out a noise in the outside unit. The service was satisfactory.

We spent a couple of thousand dollars. They do a hard sale on their service plan, but their service plan is actually very worth it. The people that came out and did the work were very knowledgeable and willing to fix things that were not done well by other contractors.
Description of Work: We used CroppMetcalfe over 3 months for our furnace.

We have annual contract with them. We have used their service for years. They are responsive. They come quickly when there is a problem. They are little expensive. I would use their service in the future too.

I would assume that a service contract makes one a valued customer, but they would only come to our house when we reminded them that it was time for the check-up. They were always rude and difficult when I talked to them on the phone and would bill us with steep charges for doing minor fix-its whenever they came out to do the check-up. We began to wonder what the point of the service contract was since it was costing us so much every time they came out. It was also a headache since they were always rude and wouldn't give me information over the phone. The clincher was when our AC unit wasn't working. It took them days to come out (we were suffering through 98 degree weather) and they charged us over $500 to do a diagnostics test. When they completed the test, they couldn't find the leak in the pipe that was causing the problem. So they wanted to charge us an additional $1000 to do a more advanced test, although they couldn't guarantee that that test would find the problem either. I was so sick of them that we canceled our contract and asked them to leave immediately. This is one of the worst companies I have ever worked with.
Description of Work: We had a longstanding relationship with CM, as we had a service contract with them for several years. They came out to our house a few times to check our heating and AC and they did specific work on troubleshooting a non-working AC unit.

I had a window of 1pm-5pm. The dispatch called at 11 and asked if I wanted them earlier. I said yes and they were at my door within 15 minutes. Two techs showed up. They were very professional. They explained everything in detail before performing the work. The started by carefully clearing everything out of the way of their work space, laid down tarps and made sure to keep whatever mess might have occurred contained. They snaked for 7 feet, hit a clog and went an additional 18 feet to be sure there was nothing else. The removed their snake, cleaned up any residual from the drain and began the thorough inspection of all plumbing and fixtures. The also offered to snake one shower/tub or sink which is included in the contract home inspection. One of the techs was obviously being trained and I was assured I would not pay for his training. I felt it was a tad expensive for a simple snaking of a drain but I assume it's the going rate. I should have been a plumber. After they left, the drain works great. They left everything clean.
Description of Work: Had a slow/clogged drain in a downstairs bath. The responded by snaking the drain. They offer a plumbing contract which I had already purchased so they also performed a complete annual home plumbing inspection included in my contract.

Eventually everything turned out fine with this company. Originally they ordered the wrong unit. They made it good. The installer was fabulous, but it took longer than it should have. They are generally very responsive if we have an emergency. There is good and bad.

Excellent. CroppMetcalfe has been very willing to accommodate my 1st appointment of the day requests.
Description of Work: I had scheduled a routine maintenance for my 3 a/c units. The technician, Miguel Soliz, showed up on time, introduced himself and gave me his business card. Miguel was very thorough with all of the units. He suggested that we install safety devices on 2 of our units that are on our top floor. The devices would shut off the unit and prevent flooding. I really appreciated his input and was surprised that nobody had recommended this in the past. I have ordered the parts and hope to get them installed next month.

They came on short notice and sent a guy up from Alexandria Monday morning. He made it in good time considering the rush-hour traffic and was very professional. He tightened up the values a little bit and gave me a detailed estimate of the work. That cost $87. The good news is they have a book with all the pricing in black and white. The bad news is the prices: replacing the faucet with a generic faucet was $445, replacing the dual hot water value $250, angle stop for $162 ... total $857. I'm sure they would have done a fine job, but I had another company install a nice Delta faucet and all the replacement parts for $312 in less than an hour. It was a pleasure dealing with them, but the cost was no comparison.
Description of Work: Had leaky kitchen sink values that needed to be replaced, along with a faucet that was leaking. I had them come out to see the situation and give an estimate.

Great sales staff and installation crew. Their follow-up after the job was done was outstanding. Very consumer friendly, answered all our questions and were easy to reach for additional services, i.e. service contract.

CroppMetcalfe Company charged us too much. The person that came out from the Company the year before was good. However, the person that came out this time was nasty. The old person had in fact warned me that the next person might not be as professional as him. This new person damaged our air-conditioning unit, instead of fixing it. He got mad at me when I asked him questions. Having been an electronic technician before, I knew what he was doing was wrong. So, I was trying to ask and discuss things with him to basically help him and be there with him, but when I asked him something and he just got mad. He really disappointed me; he was so bad. He basically wanted to make sure that we give up and replace the air-conditioning unit through them. However, we didn’t use them for the new unit. So, he didn’t profit by his destructive behavior anyway. He was very punctual though. He was also prompt, but in a way that didn’t help us much. I would not use them in the future.
Description of Work: CroppMetcalfe Company came out in the spring of 2009 to check on our air-conditioning unit.

They come out right away and they are very nice. They did not do a good job. They don’t have the knowledge and skills. They were a little bit more expensive than others. They were always courteous, but they didn't do a professional job.

They couldn't fix it the first time so they had to come back again. I'm not unhappy with them. They called back and gave me priority because it was cold and my furnace was broken. Both of those things were nice. The second time they came, they replaced the primary circuit board on my furnace, I don't know why they didn't the first time they came. It has been working fine ever since.

Once they tore everything apart, they told me that my refrigerator couldn't remain where it had been for 40 years as it felt that it would restrict access to the unit. I felt that they should have noticed this before they tore things out. Overall, I feel that they are expensive, but everything is working fine thus far.
Description of Work: I was low on freon. They ended-up finding cracks and problems, so installed a new heating/ac unit. I also purchased the yearly maintenance agreement from them.

They do a good job and come on time. They are respectful and clean and neat. I didn’t price this job around, so I don’t know how to grade the price. When I joined Angie’s List, I just asked out of curiosity and found that they had a B rating, but I would actually give them a good rating. I would recommend them and would continue to use them in the future.

Very happy with the service and proficiency of Cropp Metcalfe. While not the cheapest they have been worth every penny so far. I have used them on three separate occasions and the same tech has always come out, he has always been amazingly nice and willing to explain things and he has always worked hard to cut us a good deal. Having three plumbing companies on speed dial I try rotate through them thinking that they are all the same. Recent experience tells me that is wrong. We had a backup problem in our bathroom and the first company (a major area plumbing company) came out, told us nothing was wrong and charged $104 for the visit. Then the problem kept going and got much, much worse. We ended up calling Cropp Metcalfe because they were the only ones who could do something on my schedule. When the tech came out he immediately saw the problem the other plumber missed, fixed it, then saw another problem and stayed to fix it as well. All in all he stopped us from having a major "stack stoppage" that would have flooded the house with sewage if we didn't catch it. That is but one story of the Cropp Metcalfe work and how happy I am with it. I could tell you about the time that they stayed to fix a hot water heater for five hours and were very nice and gracious, or about the time our boiler was on the fritz and they came but there is no need. Very good service, a tad expensive compared to the others but worth it.

We had two toilets that were making some loud screeching sounds when refilling so needed to consult with a plumber. The technician Mike was very friendly and polite. He looked at the first toilet and immediately knew what needed replacing -- the fill valve. Next, though, he told me that he was unfamiliar with the brand of toilet we had (Duravit) and made it sound like it was a second-rate product that was likely to continue causing us problems. He quoted me $203 to replace the fill valve. The second toilet of the same brand had the same issue (needed fill valve replaced) and again, it would be $200, for a grand total of $413 for the job (fuel charge of $10). I was concerned that I was spending a lot of money on what appeared to be a lousy toilet to begin with, and would we be better off just replacing the toilet altogether for a better long-term investment. So, I had him price out the cost of two brand new toilets, not sure of what the cost would be but curious anyway. This came to $1339 -- significantly more than what I expected or was willing to pay. Mike told me he could get the new toilets that day and have them installed that afternoon if we were interested. After calling my husband to share the news, I paid Mike the $90 service call fee and told him we'd get back to him. Bottom line is that after doing some additional research, we bought two fill valves for $10 each. After looking online, we were able to replace them ourselves in about 30 minutes each. Had we had more plumbing sense, we wouldn't have had to call a plumber in the first place, but based on the reviews from Angie's List, we thought we could trust these guys. However, after hearing the price quotes from CroppMetcalfe, and their willingness to sell us something we really didn't need, I won't be calling them back ever again.

Everything great except the price: $400 to clear the drain and $200 to replace the trap - got a 10% Angie's list discount but cannot believe I paid about $550 for basically 75 minutes of labor (minus a dollar or two for the PVC pipe and fittings for the trap). He also recommended I replace my disposal unit which likely caused the clog by not working correctly. He quoted $771 but I went to Home Depot and did it my self for about $200.
Description of Work: We had a clog in the drain line below our kitchen sink. The trap also needed to be replaced. Plumber was very punctual and professional, completed the job in just over an hour.

I called Cropp Metcalf and told them exactly what I needed to be done and set up an service call between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. Since I had plans at 5:00 that evening, I was promised they would complete the work before then. Shortly before 12:00 noon I was called and told they were on their way. I told the dispatcher that I was still at work and would be leaving in order to be home by 1:00 p.m., within the timeframe that was set for my service call. I was told that because I wasn't home, they would service another client ahead of me. At 3:00 p.m. I called the dispatcher to ask when a service person would be arriving. I was told someone wouldn't be there until after 5:00. At 5:45 a service person finally arrived and, after explaining what I needed him to do, I was told he was only there to "look at the unit" and that, after waiting over four and a half hours for him to arrive, no work would be performed that day. This is my first and last experience with Cropp Metcalf.
Description of Work: I needed my HVAC serviced and cleaned and I needed my return plenum, now made of drywall, replaced with sheet metal.
