They have recently also entered the plumbing business, so we've used them for plumbing a few times, since we've been outraged at the prices plumbers charge. The plumbing results so far have been good. I've dealt with this company for a long time, a large number of their employees, and I see a real dedication to delivering quality service at a reasonable price.
Description of Work: We have our HVAC maintenance contract with Cropp-Metcalfe, so we get two inspections per year and tuneup of the equipment. The contract also gives us a discount on repairs and priority service in case of a failure. We've dealt with them for more than 20 years now, and in this time they have replaced our outside units and the heating furnace as well during this time.

For now, I have decided to address the matter myself. The cost, though reasonable, was not in my budget at this time. But, if I decide later to seek professional extermination services, I will call Cropp-Metcalfe.
Description of Work: Mr. John Donovan came to my home to provide pest inspection services after I saw a mouse in my kitchen. He arrived in a timely fashion, was polite about respecting my "no street shoes in the house" rule, and was friendly and professional in helping me to identify signs of intrusion and the likely entry points. At the end of the consultation, he provided me with a clear and detailed proposal for services that included costs. At my request, he also emailed it for my consideration. I appreciate that the company equipped him with the electronics for that. I hate trying to review my own unintelligible notes after a visit from a professional service provider!

+ -1 moreCroppMetcalfe was called for both seasonal heater maintenance and because our heater was putting out cool air. The technician came out promptly and was very nice to deal with. He accurately diagnosed the problem and offered to fix it the next day. Unfortunately, the price quoted was twice as much as other estimates. Ultimately, we used a different service who was able to fix the problem the same day for half the price.

+ -1 moreSalesman was great. He recommended a load shedding setup rather than the larger generator I had anticipated which would have increased the cost significantly. The installation started right on time. Although I think I could have had the job done at less cost had I purchased the generator separately and hired my own installer, I was glad I had chosen Cropp-Metcalfe when they ran into some complications. They are very responsive to questions and concerns. I have used them in the past for a/c and heating installations and for routine maintenance and have been very satisfied with their timeliness and the quality of their work.

+ -1 moreRobert even saved me some money by offering me a service contract with CroppMetcalfe which includes 1 snaking per year among many other services for $149.95. The cost of snaking the drain without the service contract and with the $50 coupon was going to be $210(originally $260). Robert also checked out a broken sink faucet and gave me a tip on cleaning the garbage disposal. Again A+ to Robert and CroppMetcalfe. Even without the service contract I elected today, I would call them back for all of my plumbing needs.
Description of Work: The outdoor drain at the basement steps has been giving us trouble since before the last hurricane. It seemed to work fine initially in 2011 when I purchased the home, and I keep the area free of leaves and dirt as much as possible, but the drain stopped working at some point. When it rained heavily or rained for long periods of time, the water would just pool in the landing and eventually back up over the door landing and make it's way inside. After I noticed this the first time, I kept towels at the bottom of the door to absorb whatever came in. I called out another plumbing service back in November, and they were less than helpful. The plumber during that visit told me my sump pump was broken and didn't know if the drain was actually draining to the sump pump or just into the ground. He told me he could find out by snaking the drain for approximately $380. Absurd! At that point, I resolved to the fact that I would have to find another way to keep water out of the area, until I heard an ad on WTOP radio about CroppMetcalfe offering $50 off service. I did some research on their service offerings and pricing and decided to give them a call. I called them on a Wednesday, they offered to come out on Thursday evening, but I ended up scheduling for Friday morning. Unlike other service providers I have worked with, the technician actually showed up around 9:30 for our 8-12 appointment time. I'm used to companies showing up 45 minutes late and not calling to notify you that they'll be later. So this was a good surprise. The plumbing technician looked at the drain, looked at the sump pump and had the brilliant idea to poor a bucket of water into the drain and see if anything came out of the pipe leading to the sump pump that we suspected came from that drain. With the clog, it took a while for any water to even drip out of the pipe, but once it did, we knew what the problem was. He snaked the drain and we were in business. Am I a little upset I didn't have the idea to pour water in the drain and watch the sump pump pipe myself? Yes! But with that being the only part of this visit I was unhappy with(that I didn't think of the bucket of water idea first), I give CroppMetcalfe and Robert, the plumbing tech, an A+.

+ -1 moreMy selection of Cropp-Metcalfe as a contractor was in part because of our good experience with their maintenance programs. I met with the sales rep, who accurately described the problems with the old system and suggested a new system. After deciding on a system, the sales rep and a senior installer spent about one hour diagramming changes to the system, which I believe was key to a successful installation. The old system was removed in one day, and the new system with the zone system was installed over two other days. The installers kept the house neat and clean during the installation. The new system, which was somewhat expensive, provides excellent heat in four zones for the home, and we are much more comfortable than we were with the old. The only minor complaint I have is that the Virginia Power rebate was never completed. builders-grade heat pump.

+ -1 morecropp metcalfe saved us a flooded basement. I had to call them at 2am to come out and replace a sump pump and battery that went out during a storm. I went down the list in the phonebook and call all plumbers and left messages. They were the ONLY ones who returned my call and came out. I couldn't even get my home warranty company to dispatch anyone. I waited only an hour for them to arrive which was good considering the technician was coming from MD to VA. The tech was professional and explained everything he was doing in detail. There was a large fee for coming out in the middle of the night for an emergency, but he informed me if I purchased a year service contract, the fee would be waived. This saved me money and they service contract has been great. There number is on my fridge, and I will call them whenever there is an emergency!

+ -1 moreMr. Devery Travers, certified inspector for CroppMetcalfe's pest control arm, impressed me enormously. When I spotted a mouse in my small one-bedroom condo one night, a friend suggested I call Devery. He showed up the very next day and did a complementary assessment of my unit. He spotted a couple of possible entry points and suggested I stuff them with steel wool. He then said that with those points sealed, my problem should be solved. He actually dissuaded me from retaining his firm even for one more visit until I see if stuffing those holes solves the problem. Throughout the visit, he was extremely professional, clearly knowledgeable and patient (I was very rattled by seeing that rodent in my small home!). Based on my friend's experience -- he successfully addressed a full-on infestation in her DC single-family home -- as well as my own interaction with him, I'd highly recommend him to anyone seeking rodent treatment.
Description of Work: Mr. Devery Travers performed a complementary walk-through and needs assessment of my one-bedroom condominium after I spotted a mouse running across my living room floor. The appointment was for a needs assessment and estimate for any services he could provide at a future appointment.

+ -1 moreExcellent service! Once the problem was diagnosed, a rep from the company explained exactly what was to be done and why. He answered all my questions and even reiterated several points to make sure I clearly understood the next steps. Once the part was ordered (a small delay due to phone connection being down due to mega storm Sandy, I was contacted and the repair scheduled. On the day of the appointment, the replacement part was delivered early in the day and the technician showed up during the window of time set up with the home office. The technician was knowledgeable, made sure all was working properly before leaving my property. I am very pleased and would highly recommend them to others. I would also use the firm again for other needs in the future.
Description of Work: my boiler wasn't working properly. i had used another plumber in the past and the problem persisted. I went to Angie's List to find reviews for my needs and Cropp Metcalfe came out on top. So i took a chance and they really delivered. The problem was diagnosed quickly and parts ordered. The technician showed up exactly as scheduled, performed the work, and the boiler fixed. I now have heat!!!

+ -1 moreI purchased their "platinum" service plan for almost $400 to insure reliable service for the tenants in the condo that I rent out. In spite of being told that as a "platinum" customer, I would be able to schedule appointment times, receive service with ease, etc., I was unable to schedule appointments for months on end, forced to wait for hours for technicians to show up, and to top it all off, during the one "service" call I was able to schedule under the plan, the tech intentionally disrupted the system. I am never using this company again and will vehemently recommend to anyone considering them that they look elsewhere.
Description of Work: Avoid using this company AT ALL COSTS. I purchased a service plan under the guise that I would be treated well by this company and they miserably failed in their delivery. To top it off, they broke by HVAC unit when I didn't re-new the plan.

Placed CroppMetcalfe (CM) maintenance stickers over my 5 year HVAC contractor maintenance stickers, and when I tried to peel them off, the HVAC maintenance records were lost completely. The technician was trying to cover up the HVAC business sticker's and get new business in a highly unprofessional and unethical way. When I called the CM service manager, he stated that I could ask my HVAC service contractor to replace the records or use my hard files for my warranty purposes, which is a waste of my time and unresponsive to my call. I would not use this company again--they are BIG and maybe training their contractors in this practice. The technician asked if I was happy with my current HVAC contractor and I said yes. Despite this, he was trying to deceitfully get new work, and ruin my record of maintenance history at the same time.

+ 0 moreOverall, it went very well. This story deserves to be told. Three weeks ago CroppMetcalfe rebuilt a twenty five year old toilet we have in our powder room. The job was expensive, but the plumber was efficient, informed us of our choices, and we were satisfied with the work. We discovered yesterday, however, that the toilet was backed up, wasn't flushing. I called early in the morning and by early afternoon the plumber had arrived and cleared the line. Neither my wife nor I was at home at the time - the response by the plumber had been too fast! - but I trusted CroppMetcalfe enough to tell them how he could get in. When we returned home he had already left. I was surprised, however, to find a bill for about $200. I called CroppMetcalfe to make my case that I thought we shouldn't pay that bill, so soon after we had just had a major repair. CroppMetcalfe responded, not unreasonably I think, that repairs on the mechanics of a toilet do not guarantee that it will not clog. I argued, however, that I thought the original repair work might have been left incomplete, that perhaps the plumber had not assured that the line on an old malfunctioning toilet had not accumulated material that later caused a stoppage. Frankly, it was a close call, for it is not impossible that - unbeknownst to us - a guest might have indeed caused the problem. But CroppMetcalfe gave us the benefit of the doubt and removed the charge. The representative that I spoke to also said that if we had any other concerns, he would be happy to come by to assure that the repair had indeed been performed properly. Thank you, CroppMetcalfe.

They also advertise and they would look where there are recommendations. We also get a report on the observations.

+ -1 moreMy wife scheduled a visit to have two 1/2" PVC supply pipes in our powder room re-routed to come from the wall instead of the floor. She asked, very specifically, "will they be able to do the work on Saturday?" The answer was "Yes." When the technician arrived, he had NO knowledge of what we wanted, and was completely unprepared to do the job. He promised that someone would come the following Monday to give an estimate (i.e. STILL not to actually do the work). I called later on Saturday and requested a supervisor - none was available, but I was promised one would call 1st thing on Monday. In the mean time, they still charged the service fee - to do absolutely nothing (we didn't even get an estimate, let alone service). By Monday afternoon, we had no contact from either a supervisor OR an estimator. When I called to ask what was going on, no one seemed aware of the original request OR what was written on our invoice (which stated "customer request estimate..."). But they promised a supervisor would call the next day (Tuesday). By the end of Tuesday - no call. The next day was the 4th of July. The next day: NO CALL. Finally, I called them (again) on Thursday afternoon and got a supervisor, who agreed to refund our service fee. Of course, we had paid by check - and it would take them up to a MONTH to process a check refund. (?!) SO - good on them for agreeing to refund the service fee (though as of this writing, it remains to be seen how much follow-up will be required to get that back). Horrible on them for passing on requests and for responding to queries. (A final note: While they did eventually agree to refund our service fee - which we haven't seen yet, of course - I did get a lot of excuses about what a busy week it was, etc etc [this was the week a big storm hit]. While we understand things were busy that week, the company that we got to do the work instead responded quickly and efficiently at every point...and didn't use the storm as an excuse.)
