When my Dominion Home Energy Report showed that I “used 101% more electricity than average homes,” I knew it was time to do something! I read reviews and then reached out to several companies for an estimate to replace my attic insulation. Capital Insulation provided an itemized quote that was the best value. I was happy every step of the process from working with Karl on the estimate to scheduling the installation with Lisa and communication with the crew while they did the work. The installation was completed quickly, they cleaned up when done, and payment via bank transfer was simple through QuickBooks. I will gladly recommend Capital Insulation to friends and family.

Karl and his team were great to work with. We moved into a new home that had original insulation that was not put in correctly. Also, there were numerous openings around our HVAC and attic that were making the house very drafty and inefficient. Karl was at our house within days of our initial request and provided a quick and thorough quote and answered all of our questions along the way. His team came about a week later and completed all of the work within 5 hours. It's made a huge difference in our home and would recommend Capital Insulation to anyone looking at this type of project in the DMV

Terribly. Initially, Karl was very nice and communicative and gave me a very reasonable estimate for the work. He showed up, we chatted, and he was recommended to me by a co-worker, which is why I initially contacted him. I received his estimate and I accepted it (he gave me two estimates for two different projects and I accepted one estimate). Only, this was last fall and the weather was getting too cold to do the exterior work, because whatever material Karl wanted to use (foam, or caulking, possibly) needed to cure properly and it was tool cold. So, he said to wait until spring. When spring rolled around, and temperatures were high enough, I contacted Karl to get on his schedule. Instead of getting on schedule, I was sent a new estimate, for the exact same scope of work, but the price increased. I was confused. Last November, I accepted, estimate #153200, for $588.53, and then, just months later, I received a new estimate for the same work for $644.25. The work description was the same, but the rate increased. I wrote several detailed emails to Capital Insulation but received no explanation or response. It was bizarre. It's as if Karl simply did not want to do the work. He never returned my emails or calls. I guess it wasn't worth him to do the work. I'm rather disappointed, and feel like this is not only unethical, but just poor service. I realize Capital Insulation gets very good reviews, but I cannot recommend this company.
Description of Work: I had an area under a window well where mice entered. I wanted that area fixed (closed) and to have the insulation in the basement below the window well removed and replaced with new insulation, including the insulation in the floor cavity below the well and the wall in the basement.

Working with Karl Strandberg and his Capital Insulation company was one of the most satisfactory experiences in many years of home ownership. Karl came quickly to make an estimate and gave us a thorough and professional review of our options. His company uses blown-in fiberglass explaining its benefits. Once we approved the project, it was scheduled quickly. Karl and his crew came at the appointed date and time and worked without pause to finish the installation the same day. Comunication with Karl and his office was easy and prompt. They were helpful and polite, worked professionally and cleanly. We are very happy with the insulation they installed; we already noticed that the home temperature is more stable and the heating-cooling system does not work as hard to maintain the desired temperature.

Very professional, efficient crew. They arrived when promised, got to work immediately and cleaned up when the work was done. End result is a vast improvement in the comfort level of my home. The owner, Karl, provided a very detailed itemized estimate which I appreciated because is spelled out exactly what and how the work was going to be done.

We hired Capital Insulation to re-insulate a crawl space where the insulation had been damaged by a leaky bathroom. The price was very reasonable especially when compared to the estimate we got from one of the larger insulation companies in the area. The communication with them was great, they showed up on time, got the job done quickly and did a great job of cleaning up. Highly recommended.

Great! The owner, Karl, came to do an estimate within a few days, he emailed me the estimate that same day, and the work was completed about a week later. Work was done for 1440 sq ft home (720 sq ft attic). Brought insulation from R19 to R49 (DOE recommendation; county code is for R38).

We selected Capital Insulation based on all of the extremely positive reviews I found on multiple review sites. Karl and his team lived up to every positive comment. The entire process, from the estimate to the cleanup, was performed at the highest professional level. The estimates were in sufficient detail as to provide a full understanding of the work to be performed and the price for each line item (I had eight line items). We had a few minor adjustments and clarifications to the initial estimate. In response, Capital Insulators provided a fully revised estimate which ensured there would not be any future misunderstandings. The actual work started on time and finished within the estimated time period. Throughout the process the work was very professional. The installers worked together as an experienced team. As situations arose, the team conferred with each other and Karl. I felt confident the job was being done correctly. This is an important factor to me as this type of work is not easy to inspect after it is completed. Days prior to starting the work, Capital Insulators provided a list of items you need to know about how to prepare for the day of the insulation project. While this may seem minor to some, I felt it is another indication of how well Capital Insulators plans each job and keeps the customer informed.

The owner, Karl Strandberg, provided the extraordinarily thorough and clear estimate and led the job. Despite being shorthanded for much of the day, they finished in one day, and did a super job. The house was left perfectly clean. It took several weeks for the insulatin board cover to be delivered, but I consider that no big deal. (And of course, when it was delivered, it fit perfectly.) I certainly could tell the difference this winter, and I am eagerly anticipating a cooler second floor in the summer.
Description of Work: Removed all old insulation and particle board planks from attic; blew in fiberglass to R-49, built a raised platform for storage, boxed out the AC unit and attic access stair, provided fitted insulated cover over stair. The work was done in a townhouse, 18'x28'.

After getting a couple of estimates, Karl seemed to be the most knowledgeable and didn't want to cut any corners. His crew showed up and worked quickly and efficiently. Karl went around and showed me his work every step of the way. They sucked out all the old insulation, then air sealed the walls. He then added new baffles and heat barrier. They then blew the new insulation and the work looks fabulous. We couldn't be happier with job that they did.

Called main line, the lady who picked up took my number down and I was told she'd call me back at later time. 24 hrs later no return call from her. That should of been first bad sign. I called her back and she said she forgot and apologized which was fine. She proceeded to schedule a estimate appointment for sat 11am. Now on day of appointment at 11 am no one showed up and I thought ok maybe they are running late. Waited till 11:15 am and called the office. Same lady who scheduled the appointment picked up and was surprised o hear from me about the appointment that was scheduled for today. She insisted to call her "estimater" and find out where he is and give me a call back. 30 mins later no phone call from them and when I called back to their office main number multiple times they did not pick up the phone. I'm not sure who dropped the ball here but simple answer or return call back from them explaining what happened would of kept my business with them and leaving them a positive reivew. However they lack of customer service and accountability already shows the quality of works they perform. Very unsatisfied customer with wasted beautiful sat morning

This project was on my to do list for a while, I got several estimates over the course of a week and decided to go with Karl. He was the most thorough when doing the estimate, spent probably over 40 min checking out the space in the attic, the layout is extremely challenging and difficult to navigate. He then spent at least another 30 min going over his findings and issues. His estimate was broken down line item by line item and it was clear what will cost how much - something I rarely see these days. He had an opening in the schedule, so we proceeded with part 1 of the estimate: removing the old insulation. It went flawlessly. Karl came with his crew, set up the machinery and hoses and they vacuumed everything from the attic, in about 4-5 hours. Towards the end of the job, I was able to go into the attic with him and see all the problem areas/issues he found. He was very knowledgeable, had some great suggestions on resolving some of the issues and overall, very helpful.

Karl's team was excellent. The insulation project was done very well, and we have seen the heat retention improve in our 75 year old home. We were very impressed with his knowledge and expertise. However, during his initial estimate, Karl identified as attic stairs as needing replacement, as the spring system is failing, and he included this in the estimate. He forgot to bring the materials for this part of the job, and so indicated that he would complete it "in the next few weeks." I contacted Karl repeatedly through the fall months, requesting him to come and complete the job. The job had gone so well, that we simply wanted him to complete it. He took a long time to respond to my calls, and finally scheduled a date in December to come and install the ladder. We altered our work plans to make sure that it could be completed, and he did not show up. I again contacted the office manager, who apologized and indicated that Karl would call me again to reschedule. Finally, Karl indicated that he simply did not have the time to complete our job as it was his high season. This was very disappointing, given how well the first 90% of the job was completed. If it had not been for this one lingering problem, this would have been a completely positive review.
Description of Work: Karl and his team completely overhauled our attic insulation. They removed our existing insulation, as well as the attic flooring. They installed blown in fiberglass insulation to R-49. They then installed a full raised storage platform in the attic above the insulation. Finally, they boxed out the attic stair, and provided an insulated cover to the stairs, improving the insulation capacity of the attic.

Excellent work. Very good communication and customer service. Strong ability to provide solutions. Provides clear options to customer. Based on Angie's list reviews, I scheduled a quote with Karl. Karl is very friendly and while it was not fully spelled out during our discussion, the quote was very detailed providing a breakdown of costs and options. This gave me a sense of accuracy in quote. Karl was able to diagnose the problem and provide the options available. I felt we were in the hands of somebody who knew his trade. After various delays due to my rescheduling, Karl was able to perform the work seamlessly with his crew. Clean up was good. I have been trying to encapsulate my crawl space for over a year and Karl provided the "solution". We were so satisfied that we got a new quote for the attic and we are scheduling this work as I am typing this. We will work with him again. Highly recommended!

Karl was very thorough in explaining the different insulation options available. I decided to have insulation blown over top of the existing insulation to bring it up to R-49 and see if that made a difference in our heating & cooling of the upper level of our home. Karl told me that if the R-49 didn't provide enough insulation, he could always add more later. This winter I noticed a huge difference! The heat ran very little and the upstairs stayed very warm. The real test was to see if the upstairs could remain cool even on the days the outside temperature hit 80+. We have had repeated days of 90+ degrees and the upstairs level can now maintain a cool 72 degrees! Before the new insulation, the upstairs AC unit ran nonstop and the temperature inside would rise to 80 degrees! (We have a very new high-efficiency HVAC unit, so that was not the issue.) The additional 10" of insulation and all the sealing that Karl performed in the attic definitely made a huge difference. My entire family is very happy to have a much more comfortable home! Thanks Karl!
Description of Work: Installed soffit baffles to maintain proper ventilation. Built 16" wide raised catwalk to provide access to HVAC unit. Boxed out HVAC unit with plywood to keep insulation out of drip pan. Used spray foam insulation to seal air leaks around pipes, wires, electric boxes, recessed lighting and ducts. Blew in about 10.25" of fiberglass insulation throughout attic to bring insulation up to R-49.

From start to finish everything went perfectly. Karl and his crew showed up right on time. Their set up and preparation work insured that my home was protected from their work. Upon completion, they cleaned up and vacuumed so you couldn't even tell they had been here. In addition, Karl was nice enough to take down, shave off, and re-hang a bedroom door that was not shutting properly! I could not be more pleased. I highly recommend Capital Insulation. Karl is knowledgable and gave me websites to look at to gather information in making my decision. I felt confident that they would do a good job and I was right. They did a great job!
Description of Work: Insulated my attic with blown in fiberglass to bring up to R-49. Installed polystyrene soffit baffles to maintain proper ventilation and to prevent new insulation from being blown into soffit. I was very pleased with Karl and his crew on this major job we needed. They performed the work over a two-day period and completed all the tasks that were laid out in the very detailed estimate that Karl had provided. Molly manages their office, and she was very easy to deal with; she managed to accomodate a change in the date (necessitated by a snowstorm on the original day the project was to start) to fit our request. No deposit was required, and I paid only after the job had been completed. Our house was built in the 1950s and we bought it in an estate sale, so we had no idea how long the existing insulation had been up there, though it was obvious it had been there for many years and was in dire need of replacement. They did a great job of sucking all that out, and in addition to the insulation, Karl performed some light carpentry work and protected our AC unit that also sits in the attic. The customer service was great. In the midst of fixing what was basically a hole in our attic next to the chimney, a piece of wood fell and knocked a small cirlce of plaster/paint off our ceiling. Karl contacted a colleague of his who specializes in home painting, who came out and fixed that hole (plus one other unrelated crack he spotted) at no charge to us. I appreciated that very much. The price was comparable with one other estimate and about half as much as Home Paramount would have charged for the same service (with a different type of insulation). Karl also provided a separate estimate that would have entailed simply adding new insulation on top of what was already there, so we had that information in front of us when we made our final decision. Every home is different, but I would suggest that everyone in Northern Virginia at least give Karl a chance to come out and provide an estimate.
Description of Work: Complete replacement of attic insulation. They removed all the old, existing insulation and replaced it with new Fiberglass insulation, at an R-49 value. They also did some light carpentry work to fix some things up there, and they replaced the screen over the gable vent.

If you live in NoVA, Capital Insulation should be your defacto choice for insulation work. Goal: Needed storage platforms installed in attic so I could store stuff that was taking up space in my basement bathroom rough-in. Appt: I called and LVM. Heard back at end of day and set up appt for estimate. Estimate: Karl Strandberg (president, owner) came out and climbed into my attic. I'd gotten a few other estimates, but other guys stayed on ladder and looked around. Karl was MUCH more thorough and gave me a clearer idea of what I needed/didn't need as well as other options. He didn't try to sell me additional bells and whistles, either, so I felt like I'd been given an honest assessment. (I'd considered getting drop-down stairs installed, but he said I could save some money and be fine with the current access hole.) Scheduling/communication: I had to cancel the first install appt b/c of work issues. CapInsul was flexible and rescheduled for the following week. Two days before the second appt, they reached out to me and asked if I'd consider a second reschedule. The weather messed up their schedules, and they had another client who was on a time crunch. I was fine with that (we've all been there), so rescheduled for the follwing Wed. Install: Karl came out with 3 of his squad and completed the job in 4 hours. The quality of work was undeniable - platforms are solid, baffles are replaced, and insulation is consistent throughout attic. When I got off the ladder, I said "Man... it looks great!" Karl's response: "I know. ~pause, smile~ Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to brag - since it's my company, I'm going to make sure we pay attention to every detail and get it done the way I would want it done." I'm ALL about the details, so this was music to my ears. And they vacuumed themselves out, so there aren't any traces they were ever in the house to begin with. Final thoughts: If I ever had to try and define a "perfect" service contractor, it would be a smaller group who's familiar with their service area and owner-operated to ensure a quality product. Capital Insulation meets and exceeds these criteria. Their estimate was competitive for services provided, and as I sit here writing this review, I'm certain I got what I paid for. I'll be recommending CapInsul to all my local friends/family without hesitation. THANK YOU CAP INSUL!!
