Tony, of Bright Construction, was one of the contractors we checked with in doing our project. He was professional but very curt and short with his visit. We found his price to be a bit high as it didn't include any paving of bricks or flagstones, however we didn't ask to include that in the proposal -- so that's through no fault of theirs. I felt that there were no connection so we didn't use him.
Description of Work: The work entails putting in porch foundation and re-paving and extending a new driveway.

Tony and his crew arrived on time and Tony walked me through the entire project. I wanted to change to a flagstone front walk and Tony factored it in with a new estimate on the spot. The crew was on time every day, including Memorial Day. The job was delayed slightly the next week because of a scheduling conflict but the work was done in less than a week. The crew cleaned away all debris and restored the lawn. The flagstone walkway looks beautiful and the new patio which had been set over an existing concrete pad is very nice. The pavers were laid with care and precision including a short walkway to the back door. The front of the house has an entirely new look and the neighbors have all complimented the professionalism and speed of the job.
Description of Work: Remove large shrubs and ivy bed in front of porch on both side of the walkway haul it away. Remove existing front walkway and steps and haul it away. Install a new reinforced concrete walkway approximately 50’ x 4’ x 5” thick. Install irregular shape flagstone over new front concrete walkway. Install a 21’ x 4’ brick front porch over new reinforced concrete base. Install new brick steps as needed from front door into front porch and from front porch into new front walkway. Install a 7’ft long hand railing in an L shape from the house up to the concrete walkway. Prepare existing driveway to receive new asphalt. Install an average of 2 ½” thick over existing concrete and asphalt driveway from the apron up to the back corner of the house which is approximately 50’ x 10’ + 25’ x 15’. Build a new window well around air vent at the back of the house. Raise the ground soil all around the existing concrete to be flush with future pavers Appian Prest Brick From Hanover Charcoal tan blend 6x6 and 6x9 in size. Pavers to be secured with an edge all the way around the patio and walkway below grade. Install pavers over existing concrete patio and walkway at the back of the house. Patio is approximately 23’x 23’, walkway is approximately 17’ x 4’. Pavers to be installed on a ½” sand bed over existing concrete.

They were the only ones that were willing to come out and do the job. We couldn't find too many masons willing to come into DC to do the job. Generally we were happy with the work. Initially it didn't cosmetically look good and we had to kind of force them to come back. That was a negative on their pat. They weren't really willing to come back but they did eventually come back and correct what was wrong. We wouldn't use them again if we didn't have to.

Our front brick paver walkway and rear exposed aggregate concrete patio were damaged last winter in the process of repairing and replacing a water line and PVC drainage line serving our home. We investigated Angie's List for qualified concrete and brick contractors to complete the repairs. Bright Masonry stood out as a very reputable and competent company based on the comments of many Angie's List members. We contacted Bright Masonry and within a day Rui Domingues visited our home to investigate the work and provide an estimate of repairs. The cost appeared reasonable for the amount of work involved and the materials to be used. In comparison with another company, this view was confirmed and we contracted with Bright to complete the work. Due to their busy schedule (always a good sign), we were told the work would not likely begin for 3-4 weeks. This fit our schedule with a little to spare as we were hosting visitors for an extended stay in about 6 weeks. Bright contacted us to schedule the work within the indicated timeframe. However, we had to delay the work as our landscape company had not yet completed work on repairs also associated with the damage from our water line repairs. We established an alternative start date with Bright for the following week. The day before the agreed date, we contacted Bright's construction foreman assigned to our project who apparently had not written down the new agreed date. A new date was agreed but the time remaining to complete the work before our guests arrived was getting quite short. The work on both projects was begun on a Friday and completed the following afternoon just two days before our guests arrived. This caused us a bit of stress but we could tell that Bright understood the urgency of completing the work and made sure that their original commitment was honored. We greatly appreciated this effort. The Bright construction crew was efficient and professional. There was a minimum of disturbance around the two construction areas. Following their work they cleaned the work areas completely and respread the mulch in the garden beds adjacent to the patio and walkway. But best of all, the quality of their work was exceptional. The brushed aggregate patio blends almost seamlessly with the older, existing patio. And you only get one shot at getting this right due to the amount of material involved in relaying the patio. And our front walkway is a piece of art. Finally the brick paver walkway is history. That walkway was constantly settling and weeds would grow in the sand between the pavers. Now we have a beautiful permanent brick walkway built over 5 inches of solid concrete. They installed a drainage system beneath the concrete to help move water away from the walkway. The Bright masons were amazing craftsmen and the final product was visually and mathematically perfect. Luis, our foreman, was also exceptional to ensure the quality of the work throughout the job. I couldn't be happier with work of Bright Masonry. I would highly recommend them for quality work. My only observation is to maintain a closer communication to be sure there are no misunderstandings on the schedule. And if I haven't been clear, I share a part of the blame for our minimal scheduling issues. But the final product is well worth any wait that might be involved. They are exceptional craftsmen.
Description of Work: Replace portion of concrete patio at rear of our home. Replace brick paver walkway at front of our home with a permanent mortared brick walkway.

I called the company to request an estimate to repair a crack in a limestone hearth. They did not return my call until much later. It may not have been something that they could fix, but the least they could have done was return my call. Thus, I give them low marks in responsiveness and customer service.

Bright Masonry, Inc never showed up for two appointments they scheduled.
Description of Work: I made an appointment with the representative for Bright Masonry, Inc for 4/9/11 at 10 am. At about 11:30 am he called to say he had a family emergency, but then scheduled an appointment for 4/13/11 at 6:30. Again, a no show. I would not trust anyone who could not make two simple appointments to provide an estimate on redoing a front stoop.

Mr. Dominguez was able to find brick that matched my house (it is reused brick from Old Town Alexandria) - no one else suggested doing that. They finished the job in one day and you cannot tell the difference between the new work and existing brick. They did an outstanding job. They even came back and covered the chimney later that evening when rain threatened. Communication is sometimes lacking but if you are not hyper about that, these are the guys to get.

Bright Masonry redid my stoop and created a new stone walk over a new poured concrete base. the work they did was beautiful and I am constantly getting compliments. The crew was also great. The head of the crew spent a lot of time placing the stones to get the optimum design. My only complaint was that I had specifically asked for multicolored stones with less gray and to be sure there was some brown to tie into the bricks on the house. To accomplish this we agreed that I would go to the yard with them to pick my stones. I got a call at late the night before they decided to start (I wasn't sure of the exact start date until then), asking if I could meet at 8AM the next morning at the yard. With young kids that was not possible for me without some preplanning so I reiterated what I wanted and put my trust in the owner. What was ultimately delivered to my house was all gray stone. Luckily I saw this before any stones were placed and complained to the crew. My crew cheif was able to swap out for some stones at another job and give me beautiful end result that was exactly what I wanted. But, if I had not been home when the stone was delivered that would not have been the case. Therefore, while I highly recomend the quality of work Bright Masonry does I can only recomend they be hired if a consumer can be home to keep tabs on the job.

The only issue was the design of the patio. There were no drawings and Mr. Domingues was not there for the start, however, he came the next day and we easily corrected the situation.
Description of Work: Removed existing driveway and walkway. Removed existing stone planter in front of house. Demolished existing patio which had failed in several places. Installed new drainage and base, poured new driveway and walkway to my specification. Rebuilt field stone paver planter and window well to match. Overlaid new concrete walkway with fieldstone - rebuilt entry stoop and finished with fieldstone. Built new patio and finished with brick boarder. Installed slab for a shed to owners specification. Re-caulked new and existing concrete where it met the house. Regraded landscape for appearance and drainage. From my experience, good work, good price, nice people.

They are professional and thorough, but I think there quote was very high. I think the quote was overkill, with too much cost for the demo (taking down the whole stoop and sidewalk as opposed to taking the stoop down to its concrete base, reinforcing with rebar, and using new concrete over the existing sidewalk, leveling). The actual flagstone quote was competitive.
Description of Work: We asked the company to quote on redoing our front stoop and sidewalk. The estimator (George) showed up on time and was very professional. He asked good questions and sent the written quote as promised. I found that the quote was very expensive, double two other quotes. I think there was too much cost in the demo of a 40-year old sidewalk rather than in pouring conrete over the setlled sidewalk for a base and then placing the flagstone on top. The other two quotes did this. They did the same work that had been proposed, at about 50% of the cost proposed by Bright.

BADLY done by Bright. I arranged for a time for them to meet me at home and they even sent me an e-mail confirmation. When they didn't show at the appointed time I called and was advised that they needed to reschedule for later that same day. Another e-mail confirmed the new time and again they didn't show, although they must have eventually come by later since they left a business card. Business must be good for Bright to be able to treat customers this way.

Their workers are very skilled. They came out and interviewed me and the job and gave me a reasonable price. They were there exactly when they said they were going to be. They worked from 8AM until it was too dark to see. I've never seen people work that hard. Keep in mind this was during 100 degree weather. They were very, very good and also nice to be around. There was always a supervisor on the job that could speak and understand English.
Description of Work: They did a large back patio in brick. They layed concrete under the brick. They did a side brick walkway from the street to the patio. They did the flagstone front door stoop. They did a front walk in flagstone and another walkway over to the garage. They did some concrete work on my driveway, by extending it. They had to tear out all of the old stuff that needed fixing/replaced.

This is my second time using Bright Masonry and they definitely reminded me why I chose them the first time. Their level of customer support is unusally good for a contracting company - from the knowledgable lady in the office who stays on top of the project and kept me informed, to the guy who did the estimate - who arrived on time and knew exactly what I wanted. The working crew was great. They arrived early in the morning (a little earlier than I was told they would) and worked until late in the evening to get the job done. They were careful to ensure we were satisfied with the project plans before pouring the concrete, and they were extremely sensitive about not turning our whole yard into a construction zone. When they left, everything was back in its place and there wasn't one speck of trash left behind. Both my husband and I work, so it is often very difficult to schedule projects in this area. Bright Masonry's team definitely made this project easy for us to accomplish.

They came to do the chimney first. They had matched the brick as best they could and started to work immediately. They up scaffolding and then had to remove a lot of the top section of the chimney. They worked quickly and had completed the work in two or three days. For the walkway, they removed the old walk and had to dig out the new pattern and build a framework to set the base for the brick work. They also covered our existing "porch" with brick and installed a new stoop. They did a beautiful basketweave pattern and it looks great. We have had many compliments on how good it looks.
Description of Work: We needed our chimney repaired due to badly spalling bricks. We also wanted to replace out front walkway with a brick walk. They came out promptly to give an estimate and the gentleman even walked up the street with me so I could show him the type of walk the I wanted. The estimate came in a timely manner and we signed a contract. The start of the work was delayed a bit because of the snow in December, but once started they got the work done quickly. Everyone was very polite and professional. Rui Dominguez was the supervisor and he did most of the walk himself. He did a fabulous job and we are very pleased. One of our neighbors said he thought it was the best brick walkway in our neighborhood! We would definitely use them again and would highly recommend them.

As part of a renovation, I wanted to install hardwood flooring on the concrete foundation of my slab-on-grade house. When I pulled up the old flooring, the concrete foundation surface was very uneven -- as much as 2 inches difference between different locations on the floor -- not adequate for the engineering flooring I was hoping to install. Having done a lot of the work on the house myself, I initially tried leveling the worst part of the flooring myself, but I think i actually made it worse. I got quotes from a handful of flooring and masonry companies from Angie's List just to have the foundation leveled sufficiently for the hardwood. Like the others, Bright came to survey the work and talk about options. I was pretty comfortable after the survey, mainly because he seemed very competent and I didn't get the feeling that the Bright representative was trying to sell me something, just solve the problem. While Bright wasn't the only company I felt comfortable with, they quoted the best price. The floor area is about 500 sq. ft, inside my house, I already had drywall up, and there was a limited amount of height to work within. They sent 2 guys to do the work -- one guy mixed the concrete while the other guy spent 12 hours leveling the floor by hand with a trowel, checking the depth/height periodically with a laser level. They covered the entire floor on the first day (I think it was a Saturday), let it set-up for a day, and came back on Monday to touch up a few spots where they had to feather the new concrete to blend with the highest points in the original floor. This was not an easy job, but these guys did a great work for the money, especially considering the other quotes I received, some of which were much higher. After the floor dried for another day, I checked the level myself with a long 2x4 and a level, and thought it was fantastic. I don't think it was perfectly level -- which just isn't realistic to expect, but it was definitely within an acceptable tolerance, and turned out to be sufficiently level for the hardwood flooring. I was very happy with their work and professionalism and would hire them again.

Good. The person who came out seem overly disappointed that the job wasn't any larger than it was (though it certainly seemed like a big job to me) and asked if there was anything else we wanted done, saying this job was so small that it is something they'd throw in for free with a bigger job. A nice offer, but we didn't want to do anything else. He asked if we would mind having the work done on a Saturday, with a last minute call on Friday. That was fine by me, so we got the quote and made the arrangements. Their workman called on Friday the 19th and arranged to come the next day. He came at the correct time and was in and out in less than two hours (so I guess it was a small job, though it would have taken me a week). The result looks great and we love not having this hole in the wall and worrying about what is going to collapse.
Description of Work: I used Bright Masonry a number of years ago for some work on an old house I owned, so I called them again to do some work on my current home. The previous owners had renovated the kitchen but the workers had chiseled out a chunk of cinderblock about 5' long and 1' high for the sink drain. When moved our kitchen to the other side of the house and discovered this problem when we dismantled the old kitchen. I consulted with a structural engineer (since the cinderblocks sort of hold up the house) and his recommendation was to have a mason come in and replace the missing bricks. Recalling my previous experience with Bright, I called again.

I was very disappointed in this company. The person who came to do an estimate showed up an hour and a half late. Then when I explained the problem (need to have our chimney rebuilt) he would not go up on the roof to look at the chimney, instead suggesting he could do an estimate from the back yard or from the street. (Our chimney is not visible from the street or our yard, and even if it was this would not be an appropriate way to give an estimate for work.) The company scheduled an estimate knowing it was our chimney that needed work and then refused to go and look at it after showing up an hour and a half late. After all of this, the person who came for the estimate has called my husband several times insisting he can do the job. Needless to say, we have declined any further relationship.
