Knew what they were talking about, but the bid was quite a bit higher than others we had so we went with a lower priced bid from another contractor (also on Angie's list).

The project went well. I initially had some issues with communication when working on the bid and some follow-up questions. It took me several weeks to get my questions answered and I had to do the follow-up with them. That is why I have given them a B on communication. However, when Luis took over during the actual project, communication went smoothly and the project went smoothly. They were efficient and the patio looks great. They removed the old patio, framed the new one, poured the concrete (added in the base color for us), stamped it, and sealed it. Their bid was competitive. We love it.
Description of Work: They installed a new stamped concrete patio and disposed of an old set of cinder block steps in the yard.

See above. Came to house then disappeared. Cannot get estimate despite calls to the rep who came to the house as well as calls to the company.
Description of Work: Someone came to house to look at job and said I would have an estimate the following Tuesday. Since then, I have called the person who came to the house as well as the company, looking for an estimate/proposal, but have received nothing. The company rep said the man who came to the house had left the company but would provide an estimate this past Tuesday - did not receive an estimate or a call from the company.

Bright accommodated me by coming to my house on a Sunday to discuss the work and give me a quote. I had the quote the same day! They were able to schedule the work on the day I requested. After I chose them, they showed up on the day/time that was agreed upon and even stayed late the second day just to finish the job. They paid a great amount of attention to detail. The stones were cut perfectly to fit corners and obstacles. Everything was measured accurately. The transformation of my backyard is incredible.
Description of Work: Bright installed a travertine patio, including a step from the house. They Installed a gravel driveway. They installed railroad ties around a tree. The patio & driveway were graded to address water problems. They dealt with a surprise concrete slab/partial driveway that was hidden under 6 inches of dirt. They built up a well around a basement window.

We never got any work done because they would not schedule a date. They would work out the plan on paper but evidently got bigger jobs to do or were just too busy, but they would not respond to our phone calls.
Description of Work: We are unable to get services done. Twice, men have come out who seem competent but for whatever reason, they will not schedule a time to actually do the work. I wish they would give an honest reason for not getting back to us - like we are just swamped and can't do it. Instead they say, yes we are working on it, but then never call back. Very frustrating!

Excellent. I called them on a Monday, and made an appointment for a cost quote for Wednesday. The representative was on time for the appointment. He provided a professional, detailed estimate by email the next day. I clarified a few things with him, and applied an Angie's List coupon. We came to an agreement on Friday. I asked him to call me when they had a crew ready, thinking it would be a few weeks. He called later that day to say the crew would be there Monday morning. The crew was on-time, and the foreman discussed what I wanted in detail. I went off to work. When I got home the work was done! And it was excellent, exactly what I wanted and was expecting. So the whole thing was done in a week.

This was an outstanding experience with Bright Masonry (Bright Construction). I had selected 5 contractors to come out and survey the job and submit a quote. Three of the contractors I found on Angie's List and two were from other online referral sites. All of the contractors were Northern VA based, which put them closer to me and I thought they would be more familiar with Fairfax County requirements. All of the contractors had good feedback ratings, but Bright's were the highest of the lot. All of the quotes were fairly close (about a $600 spread) but each of them had a slightly different standard for this kind of job. Some would put down wire mesh and rebar, others would only use the mesh. Some would put down 4" of 4,000 psi concrete and others would use 5" of 3,500 psi. I negotiated with two of the lower bidders and settled on both wire mesh and rebar, with 5" of 3,500 psi concrete. Bright's written standard procedures and specifications also included several other features such as using 8" deep concrete (like a footing) around the perimeter of the driveway, as well as backfilling dirt around the driveway, putting down grass seed and straw to cover the seed, and their schedule of completing the entire job in one day. I selected Bright, although they were not quite the lowest bidder. But they had a track record of good feedback, so I felt more confident going with them. After waiting almost a month for good weather, the selected date arrived (3/29/2013) and, as promised, the foreman (Joao) arrived at 7:20am and the rest of the crew (5 guys plus the Bobcat operator) all arrived by 7:45am. They had everything they needed and went right to work. I have used contractors in the past (siding, windows, roofing, plumbing, etc.) and I have NEVER seen a crew work so well and so efficiently all day. They had scheduled the cement truck for 12 noon, and when it arrived at noon, they were ready to pour. Joao was there all day, asked me to come out and review the progress several times, pointed out some minor changes they should implement to make the water runoff better, and got my approval. They were finished with the job shortly after 4:00pm, except that they didn't have the grass seed with them and would have to return to put that down. They returned 3 business days later and put down some additional topsoil, seed and straw. This job went extremely well. The crew and Joao were extremely professional, and I could not have been happier with the end result. I highly recommend Bright Construction for this type of job.

As the saying goes, there is only one chance to make a first impression. As far as I'm concerned, my experience with Bright Masonry was completely dissatisfactory. I had contacted them for a quote on a concrete driveway. We had set up a mutually agreed upon time for the surveyor to come out to my home to assess the job. At the day and time when I was expecting the person to show, Bright called me to tell me he was running a bit late from the previous job site and would be there in "20 to 25 minutes". I said that was ok. An hour later no one had showed up nor had I heard anything from the company. I called back to say this was unacceptable and I will be taking my business elsewhere. If they can't show up for a simple estimate, what will their actual work be like?

I was concerned because it was an overcast day with rain predicted. The crew started about 9AM broke up the old concrete and hauled it away, tamped down under where the new pour was to go and spread and leveled gravel. erected wooden forms, placed rebar and steel wire mesh. Concrete truck arrived about noon to 1PM and began pour of the porch walkway and driveway. Workers moved the contrete around and smoothed it. Broom finished the job. Truck left and a second truck came with more than enough to finish the job. After they left we got light sprinkles of rain, I was concerned but have not seen ill effects from the light rain. If I had it to do over, I would not have it done with rain even in the forecast.
Description of Work: Breakup and remove old driveway, porch and walkway. Set forms, lay rebar and mesh screen, Tamp down areas to be poured with jumping jacks and pour and level gravel. Pour and smoothe concrete on new porch, driveway and walkway. Seal driveway several days later. Informed me about how concrete cures and advised that I could park on it within several days but would be stronger if not parked on within one month. I left the area taped off for 30 days before removing tape and parking on it. Almost four months later the driveway has no cracks. The walkway only had mesh reinforcement and a crack developed in a joint almost the first time it was walked on. I would have asked for rebar in the walkway if I had foreknown. Overall outstanding work overseen by Andrew McKinley. The crew all knew the work they needed to do and did it. I am pleased.

Bright Masonry was prompt, provided a competitive bid and followed through with the work about a week later. They were on time. They did the work as they described and completed on time. Their workers did an excellent job by keeping the job site clean and took care of the landscaping and porch that were adjacent to the driveway. I would hire them again without hesitation.

The work went very well. The crew started and finished in one day. There were several guys working on my porch, which was pretty impressive (I was expecting just a couple guys). When the stairs were done and they removed the forms, the crew took time to ensure the mulch and dirt they had moved to set the forms was put back in place.
Description of Work: The concrete porch stairs of my old DC rowhouse were cracked and in bad shape, some other areas of the porch also needed patching. I got several bids, and while Bright Masonry (POC Andrew) wasn't the cheapest, they were by far the most knowledgable and professional. Andrew gave me an honest assessment of what needed to be done, inculding discussing options for alternative solutions. Andrew also answered several questions by email. He was up front about the process of the work, and what they would do if the original brick edging on the sides of the existing stairs didn't survive the jack-hammering (which it didn't). I was actually a little worried about esthetics on that last point, but Andrew's crew did an excellent job with the new stairs, they look great without the brick detail! The other repairs also went well. I could not be happier with the result.

Fantastically!! Wonderfully!! Perfectly!!! What a wonderful job. I think they too are proud of the work they did.
Description of Work: Removed the wood and screen in a section of our screened porch and installed a 15' tall stone wall and woodburning oven. We bought a kit for the oven, but not a lot of companies have the experience of putting them together. There are a lot of horror stories out there and a lot of tales of redos. So we went with a company that had put the kits together, and build all the surrounding structures. They met us at the stoneyard and helped us make a good selection. We sketched out our ideas, and they came back with detailed blueprints and we discussed each detail to make sure we completely understood each other. They started on time, and showed up every day and worked ALL day until it was dark and sometimes after dark with flashlights! The got the permits and met with the inspectors every time. Luis was the one overseeing things every day and he is a perfectionist. If something looked just a little 'off', he had it redone. For the roof and the floor, he offered us a beautiful stone that was left over from a previous job and it added so much much to our project. It really made a huge difference. He knew it would and wanted us to be pleased. There was a lot of digging for the foundation and a sprinkler pipe had to be broken, but he told me in advance and then when I had it repaired, he stayed and watched to make sure it all went well. He even had the treches redug for the piping and covered it all up. He even planted grass seed where they worked. The job took a little over two weeks and it absolutely beautiful. I know, for the money it should be! But the kit cost $5k alone and we picked out an expensive stone..

I was very pleased with the work done by Bright Construction from providing ideas at the time of the original estimate to the completion of the job to my full satisfaction. Everyone from the company was professional and courteous. Aside from one mix up in scheduling the day the work was supposed to be done (a very minor inconvenience) my overall experience was excellent and I have no hesitation in recommending the company to others.
Description of Work: We needed to repair a crumbling asphalt driveway drainage area and decided to put in a concrete drainage system. Rui from Bright Construction Group came to the house to see what needed to be done and offered several alternative approaches. When his crew showed up to do the work they were quick and efficient, and even made a few minor improvements to the original plan at no extra charge. We had also asked Rui to include the leveling of some flagstones on our front walk as part of his original estimate. When the Bright Construction crew completed this part of the job I noticed that they had incorrectly used sand to support the flagstone. When I pointed out that the estimate called for gravel rather than sand, they went back and redid the work using a gravel and concrete mix for extra support and durability.

Stephen came to give an estimate and went over the job requirements thoroughly. He understood that we needed not just a new driveway, carport pad and walkway but we also needed to have some leveling and drainage work done as well. Of all three estimators who came to look at the job he was the only one who recognized the need to level the yard and correct the drainage problem on one side of the walkway. He was professional and competent. The job went exactly as described, with the first team arriving when expected, and working late on the first day to complete the concrete work. They did a beautiful job. The next day the flagstone installers arrived and again, worked hard all that day and the next to complete the flagstone walkway and porch. They too did a beautiful job. The next crew came to re- plant the azalea bushes that had to be removed to level the yard, and re-seed the yard. I was completely satisfied with the entire job, and the professionalism of everyone involved. And to top it off, their price was the best of the three estimates we received.

Bright took what could have been an awful experience and made it fairly painless. They poured a aggregate concrete driveway to replace an aggregate concrete driveway that was cracked and improperly pitched. The first driveway they poured came out in two different colors/textures due problems encountered during the pour. After speaking with the folks at Bright about the color/texture issue they came back again and tore out the entire driveway poured two weeks earlier and poured another new driveway that looks great and is properly pitched. Bright stood behind their work and made everything right.

Very professional, multiple ways for me to work with the front office staff. Flexible scheduling. Professional guys. Relatively prompt. They did the work in 1 day, multiple guys working on it. Came out great. One small flaw I found they agreed to redo, no hassles. I would definitely work with these folks again and I plan to. I feel confident, knock on wood, that this work is going to last and it certainly looks much sturdier than what the home builder did.

It all started right here on Angie list. I did put out a lot of phone calls because this job had some real big issues and I needed to hear how they would do this job. Some people were honest and said it isn't the type of jobs that they could do. Others try to make it sound like they knew what to do but I did not feel the connection. I meet Rui with Bright Masonary and he was the 2nd company that came out to give me a bid. Rui knows the job and he was the one to set all of my concerns in my head. The other company that came out to give there bids must tell me where they see issues if they do not say it then I wouldn't even concider them. We choose Rui. Very professional outfit. Well manner and they work in teams. I really like the guys that work for bright. They remove our old wood deck and hauled it away. then they started to do a lay out of new patio. The also had to put in new stairs to the basement. lots of concrete work and rough in our new fire pitt. Then the stone work started and let me tell you these men work hard and if some thing I did not like they would make it right. They also removed our front walk way and replaced it with flag stone and did our stairs. Put in a beautiful porch and we use this area all the time. Would use this company againT
Description of Work: Remove our old wood deck and we did not have use of our stairs to the basemant. When Bright open up the area it helps us to see all that needs to be done. Rui knows what needs to be done. They had there front end loader at the house and the did remove a lot of dirt. The next day they came out early and started forming the new shape of our patio and worked on our new stairs. the next day pouring concrete and that same day they started to do some block work. the next thing I knew there were another crew there to do the block work and stone work. I am still very happy with all of the work. They also install a screen in Porch and re did our front walkway and stairs. People walking by always ask who did our work. A bunch of nice guys.

Went very well overall. I told the story above. I would clarify exactly what you want in the proposal so that there is no question about the extent of the work during the project. If there are changes along the way be willing to compromise and negotiate with them. If you have certain expectations for interacting with them during the project let them know that up front. E,g, I'd like to know what work is being done on a day-by day basis, I want to meet with the project manager every day, by phone if not in person; I want samples of all products they will be using beforehand, etc. If you have issues with the price ask if there is any way to reduce the price while still meeting most if not all of your expectations.
Description of Work: This was a BIG job for a residence. They began by excavating a portion of the yard to expand the patio area to cover the width of the house and increased it's length by about 10 feet. They built a 31/2 ft high retaining wall that was done in stone by hand/masonry that ran almost across the whole width of my property along with two big planters all of which had flagstone as a cap at the top. They also put in stairs and stepping stones so we could reach the upper part of the garden. (My house is built in to a hill). Once the wall was done they put in a new flagstone patio as well. An important part of this project was creating the proper drainage system underneath the patio, behind the wall and around the sides of the house. They were very knowledgeable and thorough when doing that. The owner and the project manager that worked on my project had great ideas for the shape of the wall, where the stairs should be and how to design the planters and they exceeded my expectations in that area. The wall and stairs look great and the patio turned out really well too. They also cleaned up after themselves and finished up the project nicely. I thought their pricing was fair and reasonable for the work they did and they were also willing to negotiate/compromise on certain aspects of the work when necessary. I would use them again and would recommend them to friends and neighbors and have already done so.
