He found matching bricks, and did a superb job installing the new sill. On the day the doors were to be reinstalled, Richard arrived at the time the door installers were due, but waited almost 3 hours until they actually arrived as he did not want to remove the plywood covering until he was sure the installers had arrived with the proper new frame for the doors, and actually began work. I very much appreciated his concern, his thoroughness and his excellent work.
Description of Work: Another company installed a brick sill under exterior sliding doors without flashing or weep holes, and did not slant the brick away from the house. As a result I had water leak into the house and mold form on the drywall in the lower level. Once the mold was treated, the door was removed by another company, and Richard Wood removed the old sill and properly installed a new sill with flashing and weep holes, and treated the the masonry on the house near the door from grade up with breathable high grade water repellent. He then covered the door opening with plywood to protect the house while the mortar cured. Four days later he returned to remove the plywood so the door company could reinstall the door.

Richard Wood's services came highly recommended from multiple well respected (and well reviewed) roofing companies. His reputation is well deserved. Richard and another expert mason, Eugene, performed all of the work themselves. They were punctual, professional, honest, and highly skilled. They were extremely careful and courteous. After the work was completed, they cleaned up both my property, and my neighbor's properties. Overall they were fantastic to deal with, and I would highly recommend them for any masonry repair work.
Description of Work: Expertly replaced 30+ spalled bricks on a townhouse facade, re-pointed mortar joints where necessary, and sealed the brick in areas that are exposed to water runoff.

Richard was professional and provided us with information as he was performing the work. We had been struggling with a leaky roof for a few months and it was determined that the leak probably was coming from the chimney instead of the actual roof. So far, several weeks later, we are pleased with the result after the melting the snow and subsequent rains. We thought his price was fair and that he had our best interests at heart.
Description of Work: Provider power washed chimney, installed a new flexible chimney crown and worked on joint restoration. He also treated the chimney with Chem-Trete BSM 400.

He did so much work beyond what the guarantee covered and then did not charge me anything because he was so disappointed that the 8 year old waterproofing (which had a ten year guarantee) had failed. Richard is a person of great integrity and stands behind his work.
Description of Work: Made good on a waterproofing job and brick pointing job done almost 8 years ago. Spent almost the entire day re-doing the mortaring of a number of bricks, installing a new cap, and doing a complete waterproofing job.

I opted to do the work myself. First I recapped the chimney with SaverSystems Crown Coat. When it gets a little warmer I will spray Chimney Sealer on the entire external of the chimney. I am very impressed with Richard's responsiveness and willingness to share his time and expertise. I strongly recommend Richard Wood for chimney services in the Woodbridge area.
Description of Work: I called Richard and explained that the chimney on our gas log leaked water. He came by the next day to take a look at it. I carefully assessed the chimney and discussed repair options with me, including what materials I could use to do the work myself. I checked his advice with information online and found it to be very credible (there is plenty of bad advice and products out there as well).

I had a few sections of a brick wall that was shared between townhouses (both in the front and the back) that were worn to the point that my HOA had written it up as a finding in my home sales disclosure documents. I called up Richard and told him about the need to get all of the work as soon as possible. He was able to come out the next day, provided me a quote that night and was able to start work the following Monday. The previous owner had a similar process done on the other wall prior to me moving in, the brick that was put into that wall was not even close to a matching color and it had annoyed me for years. Richard, with just a look was able to match the brick and mortar so perfectly that I honestly cannot tell that there were repairs made to the wall (well obviously there are no more broken bricks and holes). Richard did a great job and I highly recommend him and will use him again for any future brick work.

Richard Wood provided great guidance on what repairs were needed on our chimney. He noticed problems with the mortar on the rakes of our chimney, which another provider did not notice. (The problems were very visible once Mr. Wood pointed them out.) He worked us into his schedule and over two days completed the work, including treating the new mortar joint restoration, caulking, and applying a water repellent to help avoid some of the same issues in the future. Mr. Wood was very professional and easy to work with.

This company did an outstanding job from start to finish. The scheduling was prompt even though it was months before winter set in and the fireplace was possibly needed. Mr. Wood and his aide were professional and did an excellent job. Although the house is 50 years old, Mr. Wood obtained bricks that totally matched those from the original build--it is impossible to tell where the new work begins. Mr. Wood's efforts identified other brick-related areas of the house that were in need of repair and did this all within budget. Neighbor's stopped by while the work was on-going and asked for Mr. Woods' business cards. Since the job was completed, neighbors have told me that the work looks great.
Description of Work: Upper chimney demolition and repiar; installation of waterprrof crown, installation of new flue caps, caulked chimney flashing, installation of new cast iron clean-out door, treated chimney with Chimney Saver Water Repellant from top to bottom; pointed-up firebos of upstairs fireplace, replaced crumbling bricks near house grade, treated window sills and walk-out basement retaining wall with water repellant, and cleaned up and removed debris.

I initially contacted Richard earlier in 2011, and he came to my house quickly and provided an estimate. My BF met with Richard and two other contractors, and he was most impressed by Richard. The three quotes I received all identified vary different scopes of work, which made it difficult for me to figure out what I needed to do. At the same time, I was having a lot of internal work done on my house (a 1970 brick townhouse), so I postponed the brick work to finish the interior work. I again contacted Richard later in 2011, and he came out to re-inspect the chimney, and I indicated to him the additional masonry work I needed on the front of the house due to water intrusion. We agreed on the scope of work and price and he started the work as soon as he finished his existing job(s) and the weather allowed. Despite my brick having been long out of production, he was able to find bricks that are almost identical to my brick. He showed up as promised. Once he started the work, he was at my house every day until it was completed. He had to set up scaffolding and there was no damage resulting from setting it up and taking it down. We are very pleased with the quality of his work and his price. We highly recommend Richard.
Description of Work: Rebuilt chimney from roof up. Performed various other brick repairs, including replacing bricks and mortar due to water entering into the house.

We needed roofing. Chimney repairs had to happen first. Richard Wood, highly recommended by an estimator for a roofing company, visited our property, called to discuss his recommendations, followed up with detailed explanation, promptly scheduled the work once we returned his contract, timely and professionally completed the work shortly thereafter. We couldn't be more pleased and not only would be willing to use his company again, we most likely will next year.
Description of Work: We needed chimney repair because we also needed new roofing. Sequencing was very important for a cascading series of things that had to happen. However, searching for a capable and responsive mason isn't particularly easy if the search takes place shortly after an earthquake. While getting estimates for roof replacement we also asked for recommendations for a mason. Richard Wood was very highly recommended -- and now that he's helped us we also highly recommend him. He was punctual, thorough, conscientious, and patiently explained not only what he recommended but also why. He didn't oversell, and took into consideration both that our fireplaces have gas logs, aren't wood burning, and also that delaying some of the work for a year would help because of our very significant expenses this year. Impressively professional, thoroughly capable, and honest!

Richard returned my call and scheduled an appointment which was convenient with me. He arrived promptly and gave estimate for work. The estimate was very fair in comparison to other estimates I had received. In addition, some other contractors did not return my calls. He had the necessary tools and mortar with him and so was able to complete the work on the same day. He was very knowledgeable to pleasant to work with. Excellent customer service.

My house looks SO much better now! Because the areas were on the front of the house, they had always bothered me and I was hesitant to get it fixed because I was unfamiliar with how it could be done and what it would cost. I found Richard on Angie's List and I am so glad I did! Richard came out & looked at everything on a Thursday, gave me an estimate by Saturday, and then coordinated with me around inclement weather days to complete the work with his son. He & his son did a fantastic & thorough job, and I couldn't be happier. You would never know that anything had been botched before, it looks just like the rest of the house! Richard really did go above & beyond, even replacing a cracked brick that I was unaware of with a brick he happened to have on hand! He also fixed some spots around the 3 areas that he worked on without charging me extra. I have dealt with many contractors over the last few years, and so I know how rare it is to find someone who will show up and do what they say they're going to do, be professional, and take pride in their workmanship. He was wonderful to work with! Highly recommend
Description of Work: Restored 3 separate areas on the front of my house that had cracked mortar that had been "patched" by the previous owners of the house. Drilled out existing mortar, then replaced it with color-matched mortar, and washed the staining from the brick.

We are extremely pleased with the work performed. Richard arrived to the house on time and carefully reviewed the situation. He gave us a thorough and clear verbal explanation of what he saw and recommended, and his written proposal was clear, thorough, and given to us in a timely manner. Richard and his son performed the work on-time and were extremely professional. We are highly pleased with the cost, the quality of the work, and with the entire experience. We plan on using Richard Wood again in the future and we definitely recommend him to others!
Description of Work: Chimney restoration (performed masonry joint restoration on all deteriorated mortar joints where needed). Water repellent treatment (treated the chimney form top to grade with chimney saver water repellent). The chimney looks beautiful, and I'm really glad that I selected Richard Wood to do this work!
Description of Work: Our chimney which is 27 years old has been flaking off for quite a while. We called three companies to get estimates for completely rebuilding the chimney on the side of our house. The estimates were comparable in dollars; however, Richard Wood seemed so professional and easy to talk to, and he really seemed to be knowledgeable in masonry. He had good ratings on Angie's List, and he was highly recommended to me by a roofer. So we seleted him to do the job. He and his son came out the next week and started on the project. Another mason joined them for a couple of days. It only took them a few days to tear down the chimney and put up a new one. I was amazed at how quickly this was done. Richard also took the time to caulk around the outside of a window that was in bad need of caulking, and he didn't charge me for this.

The project went well from start to finish. Richard returned my calls promptly and arrived for the estimate and the actual project on time. He explained the problem clearly, did a great job--including a very close color match--and exhibited professional and pleasant behavior at all times. Work was performed in a timely manner and all debris cleaned up before he and his son left. He even repaired another area that was not in the original estimate but did not charge me any additional fee. I will certainly be calling him in the future as the mortar continues to crumble.
Description of Work: Richard chipped out some deteriorating mortar and replaced it on my aging stone house. He also treated a larger area with a chemical to help repel water.

The original estimate was that work would start around 15 June. Mr. Wood called offering an earlier start which we took him up on. He offered to show up the afternoon before the start date to set up the scaffold but he had enough time remaining once the scaffold was set up that he completed the demolition that first day. The rebuild went rapidly. Originally, I had not considered fixing the brick work along the cinderblock wall, the idea came to me on the next to last day of the project and since he had some brick left over, he quickly gave me a price and we added the brick repair to the project. Throughout the project, great care was taken not to disturb my newly grown grass alongside the house, the work area was well covered with a tarp when work was not in process and the yard where he had his equipment stored was neat. He showed up on time each day and with the exception of needing an electric outlet and a water spigot, was self sufficient. While Mr Wood advised me that the color and size of the brick would not be the same because that style brick is no longer made, the match was very close. I was favorably surprised by the appearance of the finished product.
Description of Work: Partially tear down chimney, rebuild with brick matching as closely as possible to the original brick, install top 4 feet of liner, build a new crown, replace the cap, apply temporary flashing, caulk the edges of the chimney where they meet the siding, apply sealant, re-cement one brick on the hearth of the fireplace. Also tear-down and replace brickwork on top of a section of cinderblock wall and remove materials from the entire project.

Mr. Wood was prompt in his estimate and performed the work in an excellent manor and was also careful to clean up any mess. He took pictures to show the necessity of work (crumbling of masonry). He arrived on time, did the work in an efficient manner and left everything clean. The problem was identified by the roofer and Marshall's Roofing recommended Mr. Wood. His price seemed more than fair for the time and effort of the work performed.
Description of Work: Removal of old cracked chimney crown, installation of new waterproof cement chimney crown. Repair of cracked mortar joints between the bricks of the chimney. Power washing of chimney upon completion of repair to remove dirt and mold.Chimney Saver Water Repellant applied when everything was dry and finished.

Richard Woods was recommended by one of the roofers I had contacted through Angie's List. I called him that same day, Oct. 15 to inquire about obtaining an estimate for chimney work. I found Mr. Woods to be responsive, receptive to my questions and willing to come out to perform an estimate within the timeframe requested. I had taken a few days off from work so I was pleased that Mr. Woods was able to fit me in even earlier than expected. (He came out either Oct. 16 or 17 - don't remember exactly) Despite the cold, wet weather Mr. Woods took a thorough examination of my chimney inside and outside the house. His description of what he saw and what needed to be done were dead on. I needed approximately 26 courses rebuilt, a new, taller flue, a new damper, and a water repellent application to the masonry when completed. He gave me a couple options to complete the job in order to help fit my needs and my budget. I talked with Mr. Woods a couple more times on the phone and he tailored the estimated work to match my needs. I found him to be very knowledgeable, professional, and patient. Although I went with another Angie's List contractor, Richard Woods was a very close second. His estimate was very reasonable and I had confidence that he would do a good job. I will call him again the next time I need an estimate on masonry work.
Description of Work: Richard Woods inspected my chimney inside and out to determine the work needed. My chimney had been poorly rebuilt years before I had purchased the house. Mr. Woods explained the issues with my chimney and described what needed to be done so that the planned roof replacement could proceed without concern that the chimney would allow water to leak into the house as the bricks deteriorated further. He also let me know what should be done if I were to choose to actively use my fireplace. Mr. Woods provided me with a verbal estimate as we had agreed. He offered to provide a written estimate if/when we came to a mutually agreeable plan.

Called Richard regarding chimney repair. He didn't return the call for several days. When we finally spoke, we set up a time for a morning appointment to get an estimate done. He said he would call the day before if we was not able to make it. My husband took a couple of hours off from work in the morning to be there for the appointment with Richard. Richard never showed or called to say he wouldn't be coming. When I called him to inquire where he was a half an hour past the time we discussed, his response was, "Oh yeah, I forgot. I'm not going to be able to make it today." Thanks for the heads up Richard!

Response from RICHARD WOOD JR
First and foremost to read the member’s rating it sounds as if this incident happened on October 21, 2009, which is the work completed date that she filled out. The approximate date concerning this rating is, I received her voicemail message in the early spring of 2009; I was unable to get the exact day without requesting phone records. The member states that she called me and that I didn’t return her call, the call went into my cell phone voice mail, I am unable to answer every call that comes into the cell phone, when I am on a roof working I don’t have any means of writing down information, when calls go into the voicemail, I return the calls as quickly as I can, I apologize for not getting back to the member immediately. I did return the call and set up and appointment with her back in June of 2009, I was unable to keep that appointment for whatever reason again I apologize, I did try to reschedule the appointment with her for a different date at her convenience, Chevy Chase, Maryland is a 100 mile round trip from my office with the way traffic is in the DC metro area it can take as long as 1 ½ hours one way. It is rare that I am unable to keep an appointment with a potential client, weather can play a big factor, severe wind and or rain can make giving a chimney inspection very dangerous due to wet slippery roofs. I feel it is unfair to receive and overall rating of F for one missed appointment, when I did in fact offer to reschedule with the member’s at their convenience. I try to schedule all my appointments with potential customers at their convenience, I do not give my customers 4-6 hour windows, I am usually within 30 minutes either way due to traffic of my appointed time. I realize people lead very busy lives here in the DC metro area and time is important to all of us.
