Hal Co Fence and Deck

Scheduled appointment. Did no show and did not return call.

Was promised installation in two weeks. That was two and half weeks ago. Got a call today (after I contacted them three days ago to see where they were) to say that it will be another two weeks before the install will be started. The gentleman on the phone said it was delayed because of the "hot weather." His manager then called back and said that they don't have the fence in stock yet and that they always sell one month out. I told him that if they had been honest up front and said it would take a month or more, I would have never used their company.I asked for a refund and the manager said they can't give a refund because the fence was already ordered. So they have my money. I have no fence and only the promise that they will come around the end of July. Poor customer service.

Terrific! The crew was totally professional and they got the job done in quick time. The gate is perfect and works like a charm.

When we could get in touch with the company employees, they were friendly. There were several times where we were unable to get in touch with someone and the evening of the installation, we noticed a small issue and called several times, always promised a follow up, but that never came. We gave up. Considering the amount of money we spent, we expected more respect, but once we had paid in full, we did not seem to matter to them anymore.

When the estimate was filled out, it was on the estimate that the fence would be put up by a certain date (weather permitting.) I was very happy that the provider called me early each day when rain was expected to let me know whether or not the work would be completed that particular day. They were so excellent. The fence is absolutely beautiful. The team was very careful of my plants as well.

UPDATE: I was contacted for a follow up by Dave (the owner), he was very wonderful and I understood many of the issues that he explained. Seemed to really understand where I was coming from and appreciated my honest review. I let him know that even though I appreciated him contacting me that the experience I had was enough for me to go with a different contractor. He didn't seem upset or anything which was really nice. I think this may have just been a one off situation but I would still like others to know what my experience was. Setting up an appointment for a quote was easy and very prompt. Chuck came out and was nice until he answered his phone multiple times in the middle of the appointment. The first time was ok but the second time I started getting irritated. The appointment wasn't that long, but yet he felt the need to answer his phone because "it was pay day". He ended up leaving some samples outside that weren't needed for the appointment, not a big deal. After the appointment I never heard back from the company, I waited about 3 weeks before checking in as I thought maybe it would take a little longer. I checked in here on Angies List and heard back pretty quick from Chuck. He was very apologetic and said they would send the quote in the next few days. Over a week later and nothing. I offered to put the samples on the porch in a bag so he could pick it up at his leisure and he didn't seem interested since he has more. Not sure what to do with them now, I guess just throw them in the garbage. When I reached out to the company I heard back fairly quickly but then the followup just didn't exist. It gets the point where I'm tired of following up on a response when the ball isn't even in my court and the project hasn't even started yet. Goodness knows how their response time would be when the project started. Company seemed nice and I would've loved to give them my deck rebuild and screen porch build but I give up.

Staff was very professional and on time. Project was completed without issue and met the scope of work/contract. Finished product looks great!

Went exceptionally well. Received proposal the same day as the proposal appointment. Work was scheduled and materials arrived two days before the fence was scheduled to be installed. Weather forecast was not good for installation day but I arrived home and the fence was installed. It looks great.

Reasonable price compared to what others charged. They were in and out in about 3 hours and did excellent work. Even my neighbor complimented their work.

HAL Co charged me an additional $200 for the workers to return to the job site because they had the wrong fencing material delivered. I had to order the correct fencing and pick it up.

Poor craftsmanship, delayed repairs, and careless scheduling. Posts were set at irregular distances apart with concrete fill at base that did not cover/protect the wood. Pickets cut at odd sizes due to poor measurement of posts. Caps for the gate were the wrong size, so they tried to trim the gate posts with a chainsaw and force the caps into place, bending gate hinges in the process. Despite repeated requests for Thursday or Friday service, teams came when no one was home or expecting them. Schedule team seemed to have no communication with work crew. 60 feet of fencing took 6 months to complete.

It went perfect. Very professional. Will highly recommend. Much cheaper than other estimates.

Fantastic! I would definitely recommend Hal Co to install fences. They were prompt when they came for an estimate. Installation too one day and it looks perfect.

The service was really good and quality workmanship.They surveyed our yard to identify any cables, gas lines, etc...before doing the work. They delivered the material the day prior and began working the following day. The job was completed in one day with high quality results.

The tear of the previous fence and installation of the new fence went great. We've had a bit of warping issues with some parts of the fence, which from research says that the wood just wasn't dry enough at the time. That's not a big deal in itself since it's a risk we accepted when we chose the type of fence. We have, however, had a lot of issues with communicating with HALCO to try to repair our heavily warped gate. We've attempted to email and call them on several occasions to try to figure out how best to repair it, even offering to pay to either have the work done or just to buy boards that match our fencing. We have unfortunately been wholly ignored other than one occurrence of them offering to send someone out to look at the fence (though the person never showed up). So we are currently at an impasse of a very visible board warping in 2 directions with our only choice to try to get something that may match it ourselves. We were very happy with HALCO when we purchased the fence and when they installed it. They were initially responsive when we had a few issues within the first few months of purchase. They have completely fallen by the wayside recently, though. I'm not sure what has occurred since that time period which is very unfortunate.

Hal Co was extremely responsive to my questions and worked with me every step of the way ensuring that I clearly understood what would be and what would not be included in the instillation. They helped as I worked with my HOA to ensure that all requirements were met. The process was quick and my contact Chuck was available and flexible throughout the process. I would definitely use they again.

We couldn't be more satisfied with the experience from beginning to end. Hal Co.'s employees - including the estimator, Steve, the scheduler and the guys that did the work - were all professional and friendly. The job was a relatively small one, which many would not want to take on, but Hal Co. was willing to, and they did a great job. We anticipate needing to replace the fence in a few years and will definitely use them to do the installation.

Prompt response to my call and reasonable price. The workers were prompt, professional and polite. The fence needed to be installed on a curved line, at various heights and through our grape arbor and they thoughtfully accomplished the job and did it well. Very happy with the outcome.

Great company w/great prices! The estimate process was easy and clear. They provided a 11% discount to Angie's list members. The installation was awesome. The materials were delivered on Thursday, and the guys came on Friday and installed the fence in about 6 hours. Very happy with the fence.

It went great. Got four estimates, plus deck helmet. Didn't like the pictures of deck helmet decks. The other four estimates were for everything from just replacing the deck and rail, leaving the main foundation of the old deck, to replacing the entire thing. Finally decided to replace the entire thing. Only one estimate was close to this one, within a couple hundred dollars, but it was for a lower quality of Trex and did not include hidden connectors and a couple other small things that Hal Co offered. Once we signed the contract we paid a third up front. They scheduled a quick, convenient start time and came on time and started the work. They got the old deck torn down the first day and found the ledger board was rotten and would have to be replaced, which they did. Also had to wait for a county inspector for half a day. Also, we asked for a change in the rails after the first day. Hal Co took care of it all and had it completed in three days, at which point we paid the balance minus $200. County inspector made us add an electric outlet within the deck space and it took us a couple of weeks to get that done by our own guy. Once that was done (a couple hundred bucks), Hal Co got the county inspector out within a couple of days. It is done now, looks great and we just have to pay them the final $200. It was a great experience and we love the deck. I would definitely use them again.

A fair price for a quality split rail fence, but customer relations are everything. Salesperson mentioned that there "might" be an additional fee to adjoin the proposed fence to some existing decking and that they would call me and provide an additional estimate if one was needed. Fence install was scheduled with no regard for the "additional deck work" due to a "tight summer schedule" on the part of HAL Co (essentially a hole in the schedule had opened up). Week prior to install I called to inquire about the additional estimate and got voicemail. When fence materials showed up (no warning) I made another call concerning the deck work as I was about to have a fence put in with a gaping hole where it should adjoin to the decking. Morning of fence install workers arrived with no knowledge of any deck work so I called the manager/owner. He got extremely agitated when I said I wanted all work stopped until I got an estimate for the remaining deck work. Pointed out that the contract I had signed was only for fence work so I would be liable for that regardless and ultimately HUNG UP ON ME. 1 hr later I received a quote for the deck work that was much higher than I expected. Would cost an additional $1200 to put 4 posts, 6 ft of picket rail and a gate on an existing deck. Unfortunately HAL Co already had my down payment on the fence so I elected to allow the fence install vs. start all over with a new contractor. No deck work was done. 1 week later I received a call asking if I wanted them to do the additional deck work. I declined.

I first called back in March and was told that I would get a call back. They did not call after said that they would. I called back and got the owner and he was very rude on the phone. He said that another employee named Chuck would call. When chuck never called, I called back and got his number. I called him to ask about getting an estimate for the repairs. It is over two months and we have heard nothing. I called again because I heard that this company was building a fence for our neighbors across the street and got a different person this time. I thought it would be simple for them to come over and look at and/or repair our fence. This gentleman said that he would get in touch with Chuck and find out what can be done and call me back. I never got a call back and Hal co came and built the neighbor's fence with no contact with us. I feel that they provide very poor customer service and definitely do not stand behind their work.

This is the third time we have hired HalCo (three houses / three fences) - on this job they install a black aluminum picket style fence with two gates. Two man crew arrived early - worked all day - excellent install and clean up. If you need a fence - hire these guys.

It went very well. They show up on time, and finished everything up before the end of the day, they hauled the old broken fence as well.

They've been around for 30 years. They're a local company. I was referred to them not only by Angie's list site but a friend who had work done by them. It has been fantastic so far. The quote is very good.
