I decided to get my windows replaced after experiencing increased noise inside my home once my HOA removed several mature trees that buffered my house from a busy road. I interviewed five window companies and chose Windows on Washington based on Angie's List reviews and because I was impressed that the owner contributed to an online community about home repair and he appeared to be knowledgeable on noise abatement. Their estimate was by far the highest out of the five, but I felt confident hiring them based on their reputation. I initially spoke with them in mid-January and after gathering all the estimates and much consideration, including a energy audit that found my windows were all in fine condition and not leaking (although the owner of the company later told me some unspecified windows were leaking to try to sell me windows), in May, I decided to move forward with getting new windows because multiple sources had said surely the vinyl windows would block out more street noise than my original double-pane aluminum windows. The Windows on Washington salesman was squirmy about this point, although he did say that I wouldn't be able to hear people outside talking with the new windows and the installer assured me there would be a noticeable improvement. Anecdotal evidence from friends and neighbors also told me that replacing the windows would be the biggest bang for my buck for sound reduction. I live in a community with a strict HOA so I had to get the windows proposal approved first, Windows on Washington said that they were extremely familiar with filling out my HOA forms and they even had a copy of the form on their computer desktop. They were not at all helpful with filling out my HOA form and in retrospect, I think this should have given me pause and made me back out of this deal before I had signed the contract. In my HOA proposal I stated that the new windows would look as close to the original as possible, and I stressed this repeatedly to Windows on Washington - they needed to look almost as though I hadn't had the windows replaced from the outside of the home.
The installers came promptly at the expected time/date. One of the guys told me there had been conversations with the salesman I had been dealing with about the trim and he had expected that we had been in touch. We hadn't - once I gave them the deposit, the salesman sent me a short email that basically said you won't be dealing with me anymore, goodbye. He gave me the name of the office manager and I talked to her a couple of times to get updates about the installation date. This was a huge investment/cost for me and I didn't feel taken care of throughout the process.
The crew was here from about 9:30 to 6:30 and completed all 10 windows in one day. Once one of the windows was nearly installed downstairs and I could clearly hear the radio of the worker two flights up through the window, I knew that this had been a huge mistake. The new windows do absolutely nothing to reduce the noise entering my home from the busy road. I had told Windows on Washington from the very beginning that I was only getting new windows to help with noise reduction. From reading their reviews and seeing the advice from the owner on an online home improvement website, I truly believed that they were the good guys and would not steer me wrong if replacing the windows would not help. The salesman's initial response to my first inquiry to the company back in January was "I am very familiar with ways to reduce noise and will help come up with a reasonable plan once I see your situation." He recommended the replacement windows. No one promised me that my house would be soundproof, but I was assured that there would be a noticeable difference from my old windows and there is not. I have been in contact with the owner and he gave me a price reduction for a laminated coating that was added to the bedroom windows for extra noise reduction.
I am not happy with these windows. From the inside, they look nice and they function. It remains to be seen whether they will reduce my heating/cooling costs, but that was not an issue for me. My only issue was noise.
Toward the end of the install, I went outside to look around and saw the Windows on Washington crew had reinstalled one of my shutters so that it blocked my dryer vent by about an inch without consulting me. This makes me really question whether they knew what they were doing - surely this was in violation of a building/fire code and was just not a good/sensible thing to do. I asked them to move the shutter over, which they did, but they had cut the louvers on the vent in some hodgepodge makeshift solution. I asked them to replace the damaged louvers and the company took from 7/9 until the end of August to install replacements.
I have had two local contractors at my house recently to get estimates for other exterior work on my house and both of them have pointed out several things that Windows on Washington could have done to make their work look more professional. First, they did not use screws that match the color of the trim or cover them with putty, the screws are metal and visible. Second, they screwed the shutters back on rather than using the original clips for the shutters - probably because this was easier for them. The screws are arranged in a shoddy, hodgepodge, fashion and again, no putty or paint was used to obscure them. The size of the trim work does not match the original appearance of my home and looks different from the other houses. The trim is probably twice as long as the original. These are cosmetic things, but all show a lack of attention to detail and care. The owner of a house a few doors down had her windows replaced and you cannot tell from the outside because that company cared enough and paid attention to the fine details.
This was the most expensive project I've completed on my home and the process was painful from start to finish. I did some research on my own about replacement windows, but I work full-time and this is way out of my area of expertise. Although I certainly share some responsibility for hiring this company, ultimately I hired them for their expertise and do not feel as though they delivered and provided me with the best solution. The owner of the company has been over to my house and we have exchanged emails and while I feel there was no malintent on the part of the salesman, in hindsight I wish that I had dealt with the owner from the beginning. I think he may have presented me with other options to try first. He has recommended I get interior storm windows, which his company does not sell. I visited the local showroom of a company that does sell the storm windows and I do think that would have been a better solution to start with. As I have told him, presenting me with options that worked would have established goodwill and I may have hired his company for other projects or even eventually hired him to replace the windows. Things being what they are, I do not recommend this company.
I had a very good experience with Windows on Washington throughout the entire process. Kevin was extremely helpful and knowledgeable in educating me about the various products and choices as I sought quotes. The installation crew was amazing. They showed up on time and worked extremely hard. They were at my house for 12 hours! They worked the entire time they were here, aside from a 30 minute lunch break. The window and doors were installed properly and the crew took great care in ensuring the job was done correctly. In fact, they noticed an issue with one of the doors and took the time to fix it before installing it. They also reinstalled quarter round molding around one of the doors at my request.
I highly recommend Windows on Washington and would use them again in the future.

We cannot wait to get our project underway, and I will update this review once the work is completed.
UPDATE: All our our projects have been completed, and we couldn't be happier with the results. Our house looks fantastic, and WoW did an excellent job. Both crews arrived on the date and time they were scheduled to work, and we didn't have any issues at all. The work was first rate, and they also do a great job of cleaning up after the work has been completed.
We used Cetainteed Landmark Pro shingles in Heather Blend HD, and they really look great on our house. We also went with 6" jumbo, seamless gutters in Cameo to match the color of our new window frames and siding on our house. It's such a major improvement over the twenty year old white gutters that stood out and were definitely an eyesore. Our windows are Okna 500's, and they also look great. A high quality window, and a vast improvement over our previous windows.
I highly recommend WoW without hesitation or reservation.
"Thank you for your review and endorsement of Windows on Washington. Windows on Washington is extremely proud of our employees and the way they make sure our customers are taken care from the initial call until the project is completed. We look forward to completing your project for you and thank you for entrusting your home with us. The WoW Team"
We had a great first meeting with Brandon. He was very knowledgeable about the products they sold. Very straightforward, non-agressive sales pitch. The price they quote is valid whenever you sign, whether that day or 6 months into the future. You don't feel the pressure to sign a contract the day of the sales meeting (in fact, they don't even provide a quote in that original on-site meeting). He didn't use any sales gimmicks. He explained the NFRC ratings which are test results performed by an independent company that allows you to compare various manufacturers' windows to each other. He encouraged us to compare ratings for the products within the price range we were considering.
We decided to go with WOW because of the trust we gained through the sales pitch and the fact that they carried the Okna 800 series windows. I did months of research leading up to this and felt the Okna windows were among the best in the market. Even though we feel like we got the best windows we looked at in the whole process, the price charged by WOW was actually in the middle of the 7 companies we spoke with. The price quote was also itemized, showing a breakdown of how each component (window, installation, siding, etc.) contributed to the overall cost. It was very transparent and did not change from the original quote to the payment date.
Windows were installed about 6 weeks after I ordered them. Installation team was courteous and professional and finished the job in 1 day. It has been 3 months since installation and we have had no issues with the performance of the windows. It has been a mild summer this year, so hard to know how much of a drop in our energy costs is attributable to the new windows. But no doubt the new windows have contributed to the decrease. Overall, we are thrilled with every aspect of our experience with WOW.
"Thank you for your endorsement of Windows on Washington. We are pleased to hear how happy you are with your new windows. We are extremely proud of our employees and the way they make sure our customers are taken care from the initial call until the project is completed. Thank you for entrusting your home with us, it was a pleasure doing business with you. The WoW Team"
"At Windows on Washington, we take all customer feedback very seriously and I would like to sincerely apologize for our failure to provide you with a quote in a timely manner. We know that taking all feedback to heart, both good and bad, is the only way we can ultimately grow and work hard to provide the service that our customers deserve. We appreciate your A rating on the work that was preformed on your home and again apologize for missing the opportunity to quote your door. Thank you again for being a reference for Windows on Washington. The WoW Team"

"Thank you for the kind words about Windows on Washington. We were happy to be able to work on your project, it is a pleasure working for great homeowners. Please let us know if you need anything. The WoW Team"
Their work was high quality, and they were very open to questions and requests we had regarding the work they were doing.
We are very happy with the work they did for us, and have recommended WoW to friends and neighbors.
"Thank you so much for your "A" review for our company and for trusting us with your window project. We love a challenge and we are pleased to hear how happy you are with your windows. Please let us know if you need anything. Thank you again for your business and kind words. The WoW Team"
Once we nailed down the requirements, everything went smoothly, they kept us pretty much up to date as the windows and door unit were fabricated. Once they arrived they were prompt and got us scheduled for install within 2 weeks. Unfortunately, we were scheduled for a Monday-Tuesday install (they did kind of hint that it would only take one day, but it took most of two). Anyway, the Monday was rained out and we ended up with half done on Tuesday and half done the following Monday.
The install went smoothly and there were no problems. Everything looks great, they were even nice enough to recaulk and repaint a panel under the door unit that had peeling paint (and had been written up by the evil homeowners association).
They left no mess inside or out.
Not really anything to say but good things, and we are kind of picky. Highly recommend them...
Small update, they had trampled a bush, we hadn't complained but had mentioned it in our direct on-line feedback to them. The manager went out of his way to contact us and offer a replacement bush.
"Thank you for trusting us with your home improvement project. We are humbled by your selection of our company to be chosen to complete your window project. Your satisfaction is our number one priority and we were glad to help with the extra caulking and painting to help you avoid any more run-ins with the HOA. Thank you again for your business and kind words. The WoW Team"
I had considered four or five companies offering replacement windows, and went with WoW because the windows compared well to other vinyl products, their salesman was knowledgable and provided good advice, they would handle the modifications (some companies would only do straight replacements) and their price was competitive (although not the lowest).
The straight-forward replacements went very well - the team of installers worked efficiently and workmanship was good. However, there was at least one problem where the old sill was rotten and had to be replaced; the first crew left with a 1/2" slope across the width of the window sill (this was fixed by the second crew that came in.)
The major problems were with the four windows that weren't straight replacements. The first crew was under-qualified to do this work; nobody understood basics of drywalling after the window openings were widened, and the finish work on trim was substandard. Also, at one point, they were about to move a window opening several inches from the center of the wall because it would have simplified the work - without discussion with owners or consideration of aesthetics. (I happened to notice before they cut the siding, which would have been the point of no return.)
In the end, the work was completed satisfactorily - a second crew came in, re-did portions of the work and finished the job. But what should have been a 2 1/2 day job stretched out to 5 days spread out over a couple weeks (with some living room furniture in the middle of the floor for the entire period). The business owner did get involved and he was instrumental in ensuring issues were resolved properly.
Clearly, they are capable of doing good work - we are delighted with the new windows. But be cautious if you don't have at least some minimal knowledge of carpentry projects and aren't prepared to provide constant job oversight...
"[member name removed], Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and to talk through your experience with us in detail. As we discussed in reflection on the project, we regret the missed opportunity to make the work more seamless and provide a quicker turn around time from start to finish. We have now added an experienced Production Manager to our team that will be supervising all projects and providing constant oversight on any project that involves considerable construction work, as yours did. We continue to take feedback to heart, all the while striving to constantly improve our internal processes. We hope that the efforts we undertook in order to ensure your 100% satisfaction with the completed project help to demonstrate your value to us as a customer. We always stay true to our mission statement, which includes "Our work is not complete without your total satisfaction." We are glad that the quality of the products and the final look of the installation met this standard. Thank you again for your willingness to chat about your project with the owner and your patience with the project completion timeline. Best regards, The WoW Team"
"Thank you for taking the time to rate our company! We appreciate all of the positive comments your shared about Windows on Washington. While we are sure you will feel the results of your improvements this coming winter, we are confident that you should also see results in your energy bill this summer. Thank you again for your business and please let us know if you need anything. The WoW Team"
While the price for the work was not the lowest of the estimates I had received from the different roofing companies I contacted, the estimate did seem to be the most realistic in terms of the quality of the product, and the work to be performed.
When I made the decision to go with Windows on Washington, I contacted Eric, and settled on a start date.
The new roofing materials were delivered and pre-staged the day prior to the actual work start day.
The work of stripping off the old roof, making needed repairs, and installation of the new roof was accomplished over the next two days. The work crew made sure that the roof was weather tight before they left the site in case a storm should pop-up.
The supervisor and the work crew were exceptionally courteous, and made every effort to keep from damaging the landscaping as they went about their work.
When problems/questions arose, the supervisor immediately communicated the issue to me, and a solution was worked out before any additional work (that was not on the original estimate) was undertaken. These issues involved some additional water damage that was not detectable until after the old roofing materials were removed. -- The additional cost for replacing the damaged area was reasonable and was accomplished without delaying the project.
The crew did a very good job with removing all project debris. After the work was completed, the supervisor walked the area with me to ensure that I was satisfied with the quality of the work performed, and the area was cleaned up to my satisfaction.
I am very satisfied with the quality of the work performed, and would recommend Windows on Washington without reservation.
"Thank you so much for the kind words about our company. It was our pleasure to help you with your roofing project. We pride ourselves on being up front and honest with our customers, especially when unexpected circumstances arise. Please let us know if there is anything you need and it was a pleasure doing business with you. The WoW Team"
Replacement of 26 windows in the winter was initially a concern but WOW's highly trained installation crew worked with us every step of the way so that my wife's elderly parents would remain comfortable.
WOW researched the replacement of two wood-rotted oval windows that two other companies had said they could not/would not replace. Consulting with us every step of the way, WOW suggested, devised and implemented a solution that looks and works great .
The job went amazingly fast. We are extremely pleased with the Okna windows and their expert installation. WOW has also been extremely helpful in providing all the information needed for a rebate from Columbia Gas.
All employees that we encountered from this company were friendly, professional, punctual and highly skilled. This company is top notch from top to bottom and excels at customer service. You will be very pleased and well taken care of if you choose this excellent company!
"Thank you for your review and endorsement of Windows on Washington. We are pleased to hear how happy you are with your new windows, shutters, vents, soffits, and wrapping of your all exterior trim. Windows on Washington is extremely proud of our employees and the way they make sure our customers are taken care from the initial call until the project is completed. Thank you for entrusting your home with us and it was a pleasure doing business with you. The WoW Team"
We contacted Windows on Washington to replace three windows in our Family room. Brandon was our sales rep and was very informative, friendly and professional. Jose came out to measure and then came back to install with his team. We had to reschedule due to rain--AFTER jose had arrived at our house, which was a hike for him. It is hard to judge the weather sometimes and Jose and his team were very accommodating. Lynn rescheduled with no problems for us and Jose was ou again the next week. All went smoothly and our windows look great. The experience was painless from start to finish and we would definitely use this company again.
"We appreciate the kind words you have shared about Windows on Washington. We know that the weather can delay home improvement project and we appreciate your patient. We are glad that we could help you and we hope to assist you with and future projects that may have. Thank you for your business, The WoW Team"

"We are very pleased to hear how happy you are with your new windows. Thank you for taking the time to tell other Angie List Members about our company and products. It was a pleasure doing business with you, please let us know if you need anything. The WoW Team"
Eric Novotny & John Baker worked closely with me to determine what I needed, and were patient with my nitpicking and indecision over a few things (I was tempted to leave off the basement doors and windows, & I chose not to do the Garage Door or Windows because that is uninsulated space). Ultimately, it took until January for me to get my ducks in a row and ask Windows on Washington to proceed with the order.
As has been consistently true of my interactions with Windows on Washington, they are extremely flexible, easy to work with, have consistently fair prices, and they deliver on their promises. They show up on time, have excellent quality of workmanship, and go the extra mile every time.
The windows arrived a couple of weeks ago, and they called to make an installation appointment. They worked with us to find a date/time that worked for everyone, and then they showed up on time. You can't ask for more than that.
All 16 windows and the the doors were installed in a single day. The installers were extremely hardworking and very professional.
They cleaned up after themselves, and even inspected their own previous work, looking for any problems or minor imperfections. They even went so far as to fix some trim work I had failed to do properly on my part of the job on Kitchen windows they installed 3 years ago. (I left off some trim, never got around to installing it...). They also recaulked a couple of minor spots on the older windows.
These guys are justifiably proud of their workmanship.
The windows they installed are OKNA's, they look fantastic, and I've no doubt that they will outperform the 1978 era windows they replaced. I expect that they are competetive with any replacement window on the market today, and I have utter faith that if I have ANY problems with my windows, Windows on Washington will make it right.
I absolutely recommend Windows on Washington for Window, Door & Insulation installation, and expect that ultimately I will be able to say the same for some of their other products.
Frankly, of all the contractors I have worked with in the years I have lived here, these guys are Hands Down the best.
Thanks Eric, John and all the people at Windows on Washington who made this project work!
"Member, Thank you for your all A rating of our company. We were happy to work with you as long as it took to make sure that you found the right solution for your home. We don't believe in closing a sale until our customers are thoroughly satisfied with their home improvement solution. We are very proud of our entire Team at Windows on Washington, thank you for your kind words about them. It's our goal to treat every homeowner, as we would want to be treated. It was a pleasure doing business with you; please let us know if you need anything. The WoW Team"

Some side comments. Eric also came out later and fixed an issue with our gutter that was bothersome. AND he worked with our HOA. We needed HOA approval for the windows and the roof vent which involved pictures and all the technical specs. What ever the HOA requested, Eric willingly provided. The approval process pushed the project out longer, but Eric and his company were always gracious about the process. We can't speak highly enough of this company. The people, the product, the customer service, the information, the followup, all are top notch in our book. We wish that all companies had the same work ethic.
While it is too early to tell over the long term what our energy bills will do, we have noticed that our HVAC equipment runs less.
UPDATE August 2013 We have had our new windows and air sealing for about a year now and are still extremely pleased. The windows have performed beautifully through the seasons and the temperature in our home has been more constant, with less on and off of the heating and cooling. When paper work was needed for energy credit on taxes, it was supplied completely and in a timely manner. We have had a recent water leak on the ceiling that we asked WOW to check. They came out twice at no charge to help us locate the source. The source has been located and IT IS NOT RELATED TO ANY WORK THEY PERFORMED. We have made arrangements for the repair to be done by WOW. Once again, we can't say enough about the quality of this company and their customer service.
"Thank you for taking the time to review our company, we appreciate your outstanding rating. We are pleased to hear how happy you are with your new windows and the air sealing and insulation work, both are sure to save on your energy bill for years to come. It is always nice to hear complements about our team because they are our greatest asset and we will pass on your remarks to everyone. It was a pleasure doing business with you and please give us a call if you need anything at all. The WoW Team"
We initially spent several hours in their Chantilly showroom looking at different windows and trying to decide what we wanted. We ultimately went with the Okna 800 series with the brass hardware upgrade. Eric was patient with us throughout the process and answered our many questions in great detail. He came to our house for an in-person consultation (twice) as well, as we had several projects in mind besides the windows. He sent quotes over pretty promptly. Another guy came over to take the actual window measurements. The windows themselves took a month longer than we had initially anticipated to arrive from the manufacturer, but WoW scheduled our installation very quickly after that. We did have a hiccup with completing the installation of the new cut-out window, but Eric worked with us to do that on a faster timeline after we wrote to him with feedback.
I recommend their services highly -- you'll have peace of mind knowing they'll do a good job. We'll be approaching them again for a quote when we're ready to replace our roof. But i would also recommend making sure you keep the communication lines open, and not be afraid to make any concerns or displeasure known if things aren't going the way you like. Eric will respond.
"Thank you for taking the time to review our company, we understand how important it is to get the job done correctly. We are pleased to hear how happy you are with the result of your project. We appreciate your patience with the delay in getting your windows from our manufacturer and we are happy that we were able to get you schedule soon after the windows arrived. We will certainly pass along your positive remarks to Eric and please let us know when you are ready for your roofing project, we would be happy to assist you. The WoW Team"
But I had to contact them to remind them to send the installer out to take the preliminary measurements which delayed the project since they can't order windows without the measurements.
It seems their installation crews are not direct employees, but subcontractors they use over and over.
"Thank you for your review and feedback. We also want to thank you for being a repeat customer of Windows on Washington! We hope that our work on your second project this December surpassed your expectations. The outstanding windows you selected will give you many, many years of maintenance free service. The WoW Team does appreciate your patience for the delay in securing measurements. As you know, we make sure that the installer himself secures the measurements so our customers can meet their team leader and ask any questions they may have about the project. We are always looking for ways to improve our service and appreciate your feedback so we can grow in all the right areas. Please don't hesitate to call on us if we can be of any additional service or if you have any future home improvement needs. Best Regards, The WoW Team"
