Description of Work: We own a small 4 unit apartment building. The A/C in one unit stopped working. There was a burnt electrical smell coming from the unit. A friend with a little A/C experience changed a couple of electrical parts but to no avail. We called in a professional who pulled a few wires and put a meter on them. He said the system was "fried" and needed to be replaced for an estimated cost of $2500. By now the system had unconnected wires every where. A second company came in, saw all the unconnected wires and the burnt smell and also said the system needed to be replaced for and estimated cost of $2400. Just for peace of mind we called a for one more additional estimate. Blue Ridge Remodel came in an took one look at all the disconnected wires and said "we have to put this back together to figure out exactly what is wrong". They worked on it for about an hour. Once they got it back together it took about another hour to diagnose. As it turned out, the problem originated not in the house where the burnt electrical smell was but outside at the A/C unit. A part outside had shorted out and that caused some parts inside the burn out....hence the burnt smell inside. The cost to replace the part outside and add a fuse -like newer models have to prevent this from happening again- and replace the burnt parts inside was $95. The labor was $150 (which probably would have been a lot less if they didn't have to put it all back together to start out with). Total cost $245! All four units in our building are close to twenty years old and will probably start needing more service and/or replacement in the not to distant future. We will definitely call Blue Ridge Remodel for any of our A/C needs!
