After paying Ed Dixon and Woodworks Restoration a $15,000 dollar deposit, the work was supposed to begin. I left for several weeks and was hoping to come back to a substantial amount of work done. Unfortunately when I got back, all that had occurred in the previous 3 weeks was the "prep" work for the basement. The basement had been cleaned out, and the walls and floors had been sealed in treated. That was 3 weeks of work. I was a little surprised that more work had not been completed, however I assumed the work was getting ready to take off. I was wrong. Even though very little had been done up to this point, Mr. Dixon met with me at my house with a bill stating that the deposit had been spent and he needed more money. I regretfully agreed to pay another $5,000.00. This was merely a pattern of things to come. Months and several checks later I had lost all patience and faith in Mr. Dixon and Woodworks. The job was supposed to be done and I had now spent of $48,000. Mr. Dixon told me that I owed him $5,000.00 more in order to complete the project. That was when I called the lawyers. Mr. Dixon's mood changed immediately. After my attorney's and I threatened to sue Mr. Dixon and Woodworks, suddenly workers staring showing up regularly and working at a much faster pace. It was absolutely ridiculous for things to have to escalate to such a level just to get a basement finished. The basement finish that began in August of 2006 finally was finished in February of 2007. The total square footage of the project was less than 1200 square feel. And, I had to threaten to sue them just to get them to finish. To top it all off, I hired Woodworks knowing they were more expensive, but what I wanted most of all was a good job. I wanted good first class work. What I got was shorty work that a couple years later I had to hire someone else to come in and fix their mistakes. I had walls that literally did not line up together! When my attorney came by to view the situation with Mr. Dixon, he literally told Mr. Dixon that the work looked like someone with "zero" experience had done it! This was an absolute horrible project experience, and a total waste of $50,000.00 dollars. However, it was a great learning experience. Sincerely, Edward Downing
Description of Work: In July of 2006 I hired Woodworks Restoration to finish my basement and add a bathroom in the basement. We agreed on a budget of $35,000. Due to my inexperience and naivete I signed a "cost plus contract". This basically meant that even though we agreed on a budge that there was no real budget for the project. The project was supposed to be completed within 3 months, however the contract allowed up to 5 months for the work to be completed.
