EVERY CONSUMER SHOULD KNOW THESE RISKS BEFORE DEALING WITH HAWKEYE STORAGE & U-HAUL NATIONAL: On Oct. 7 2011, a Hawkeye Storage U-Haul employee did not hook up the trailer correctly to the hitch on my Jeep (also a U-Haul hitch) and, as a result, the trailer came off of the hitch as I drove off of the Hawkeye parking lot and slammed into the back of my vehicle and shattered the back end of my Jeep (causing over $1900 in damage and leaving me without a drivable vehicle for several weeks.) Instead of hooking up the trailer to my vehicle properly, the Hawkeye employee was chatting away about her upcoming "home-catalog party" and she was trying to convince me to go (Which I politely declined). I had no idea that she had not properly hooked up the U-Haul trailer to my Jeep when I began to drive away- that is EXTREMELY dangerous!!! As soon as I drove off of the Hawkeye parking lot, the trailer detached from the hitch and slammed into the back of my vehicle. I went back in to see the Hawkeye employee who had failed to hook up the trailer properly-- and she refused to give me any U-Haul insurance information when I asked for it. I independently found the information and reported the incident to U-Haul myself- only to find that she had already called them and reported the incident as "no fault of hers." The U-Haul insurance company that I delt with (RepWest Insurance) was RUDE as can be- they were simply horrible and rude to me and the collision center staff... At my own expense, they made me provide them with two independent estimates to fix my vehicle- after two months of non-responsiveness from them while my Jeep sat at the collision center and RepWest IGNORED the calls from the collision center, I was informed that U-Haul National (out of Arizona) had reviewed my claim and denied it IN-FULL as they believed that "I was at fault" because THEIR employee did not hook up THEIR equipment correctly!?!? What??? As a consumer, this is just not right... Such headache and heartache... In summation, I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING HAWKEYE STORAGE or U-Haul ANYWHERE for you future moving needs, as I now know how poorly they treat their customers, and exactly what happens (or doesn't happen) if something goes wrong.
