Nothing but amateurs! I held this review because I was told, by somebody working for Crockett, that they were going out of business. I am not surprised that my relationship with them ended in a lie. We signed a contract to remodel our only bathroom. Initially they promised to complete the bathroom in two weeks. Not being naïve, I assumed it would take a month. One year later we settled without the bathroom really being complete. This project was marred by incompetence. The first crew had intra-crew drama that we got sucked into. After that, we never knew who was coming or when. Weeks would pass with no work. In the meantime, we had plumbing emptying into buckets, pipe stubs for taking baths but no functioning shower, and half-finished tile. One would think that a contractor with 40 years of experience would know how to set a traditional subway tile pattern. Not the case. Tile had to come off the walls three times (not to mention the time they put the wrong grout color in, tried to grind it out, and ended just scratching all the tiles). Same with the floor tile, which also had to be lifted three times. Incompetent mud and paint crews. This bathroom had to be tapped, mudded, and painted multiple times because the contractors apparently didn’t know how to mud and sand a smooth tape seam. They seemed incapable of getting the shower riser straight when I could clearly see the fix. They blamed the slow pace of supply chain problems. However, the contractor we hired to do our kitchen at the same time completed their work according to the agreed upon schedule--no supply-chain excuses there. They didn’t respect our house; we had sheet rock mud and paint on the floors and on our furniture. Drop cloths seemed to be an alien concept to these folks. In sum, if you want incompetent people tearing into your house, then, by all means, Crockett is for you.

Terrible. Scheduled them to come out 3 times. I gave them the benefit of the doubt when I called to reschedule twice and believed their excuses. They never showed and/or called every time. When I called them the third time they seemed offended when I asked how they could schedule an appointment and expect customers to take off work but they didn’t show up or even call. They were rude and unprofessional.

Scam. Never call us and it's my address listed for his.
Was told it would take 2 weeks to complete job. Job completed 10 weeks later only to be torn out and started over after I complained to owner. Shower walls were torn out twice and floor of shower 3 times. Crockett was to return and fix molding and painting after the last floor replacement. I have called 3 times to arrange for cleanup and painting to be be completed and have yet to get a return call from George Crockett. One guy broke a pipe off in the floor of bathroom and it stained the ceiling below in family room. This repair was also not completed. I highly recommend. finding another contractor if you are going to do any remodeling.

At first everything went very well and they were punctual and the carpenters were super knowledgeable and skilled...for about a month. We were quite impressed and the porch roofs look great and were definitely planning on hiring them again. But then, when 99% of the work was done, they just stopped showing up and things fell apart. The last time they were out here was over a month ago and never finished the job. They left several fist-sized holes into our roof (where the porch roof attaches to the house roof) and we have since found 2 mice in the house...let's hope that's all and there aren't raccoons living in our attic. There are also a few other small issues that haven't been addressed, mainly cosmetic. I have called them several times and I was assured the problems would be fixed soon but they haven't been true to their word. The other part of our agreed upon project is the replacement of our back door, which has also not been done. At this point my hopes aren't high for this project and we will most likely hire someone else to finish the job. I have never been made to feel so unimportant as a customer before and this is unacceptable

Mr. Crockett and trainee came to our home to get scope to bid our small kitchen project. Mr Crockett was outside our home with trainee for several minutes explaining the in's & out's of our home, including pointing out any deficiencies he saw. After coming into home and going over the scope, he departed with trainee in toe and proceeded to our back yard to critique the out buildings. This was strange, but not a deal killer, although I must admit to being a little put off with overhearing him criticize our "new to us" home. Several days later we received a lump sum bid with no itemization, which was more than 3 times the amount the other two contractors submitted. If he had not been on a training expedition, I'm not sure he would have made the appointment, which would saved us the time and frustration of dealing with him. Obviously, we did not accept his bid.

I called and asked someone to come out and evaluate a possible roof leak. They were the only company of 4 that said they charge $50.00 just to come look at it. Then they never even called me to schedule the appointment! Now that I've called 3 others that have come for free, I guess it's a blessing in disguise. However, not returning calls is highly unprofessional regardless of whether or not you charge for an initial visit.

I have not started my home improvement project yet, however, when I do, I plan to use Crockett.
Description of Work: I called Crockett to get an estimate for a small kitchen and entry-way job (the company had great reviews on Angie's List). Mr. Crockett was quick to respond, was extremely friendly and professional, and followed through on getting me my estimate in a timely manner. Came to my house for a remodel and design estimate. Acted like he had no idea why I wanted to remodel and could not figure out what to do. When I asked him how much I should budget for the project he threw out a ridiculous figure, more than double what I had heard from others! Said he would get back to me in a couple of days. After I did not hear from him in over a week I called and the person I talked to said he was on vacation and they had no record of my estimate but they would check and get back with me. 1 month later......still waiting!

We were assured that they could easily and quickly do this job. After giving them a large deposit, they quickly put up the screen and then went dark. After tracking them down we were told that a spiral staircase would take months to arrive and cost much more than the estimate as there were no local businesses that make them. After repeated attempts to get them to complete the job, we called it quits and asked for our money back. The porch screening is not complete as there are gaps between the framing and wall, they didn't finish the paint job, and they kept a LARGE chunk of our deposit . We asked them to at least finish the screening, but they ignored our requests. Meanwhile, we found that there is a spiral staircase company in Roanoke and they are finishing the job. How can we find this out, but a contractor can't?

The crew hired to take off the old metal roof and put a new one on left a lot of the bricks in the yard from tearing down an old chimney to roof level as well as the metal bands with nails that came off the old roof. When we complained, Crockett sent someone to move the bricks to the side of the yard and raked the yard for the metal. I continue to find nails in the yard. The end of one of the eaves came off right away and when the guy in charge of the work was called he said he'd come and look at it but never did. So this is the second spring that we've had starlings nesting there. (Yes, my husband should have fixed it but that doesn't excuse shoddy work and no return of the project manager.) Replacing the air handlers in very tight spaces was a very difficult job. Obviously, it had been done before to even have something to replace. But the first people to install them didn't curse. At all. (Don't have any kids around if this guy works at your house.) Then he had the drain of one of them run right on the ground under the house instead of running it outside. We called and he came back to do it right. Next, it leaked all over the floor, twice. It was fixed, also. This same "electrician" botched up the bathroom. He only had to replace the old wire with new, changing nothing. What I have now is NO power to the baseboard heater. He told us it had NEVER been connected! Then how did we use it for 25 years? I have to use a space heater now WHICH IS PLUGGED INTO A MAKESHIFT OUTLET instead of the one that was already there to the right of the sink that doesn't work anymore and he can't get it to work. The new outlet is actually hooked up through the wall from a light switch we hadn't installed yet. Well, we won't be doing that now. The reason it's wired from the other side of the wall is because we rejected his initial fix. That was to run a wire across the ceiling over the mirror. When he took it down, it left holes in the newly finished ceiling. The new outlet is right next to the door on the left of the mirror over the sink. We don't have any lefties that need to dry their hair. And we have to step over that heater to get to the sink. It runs all the time. The worst thing about the wiring is that they wouldn't use my diagram of which wire fed what in the house. They just ripped them all out of the old panel and said they'd figure it out. So, when a pipe burst on the back porch from the days and days of below freezing temperatures, my husband turned off the breaker to the well pump so we could drain the pipes and fix it. Guess what? That breaker DOESN'T GO TO THE WELL PUMP! He had to go out and walk through the creek to turn it off at the well! And back to the house to see if his fix leaked and back to the wellhouse when it was still leaking a little and back to turn it on again. We haven't traced what wiring is actually hooked up to the well pump. Minor things include denting my dryer when it was moved and not replacing the "hatch" in the ceiling on the back porch where they accessed the wiring. I know there's more but I'm tired of typing. I'll think of it when I quit, I'm sure. It steams us that we paid so much for this work. Several people said we paid way too much. We were too trusting and aren't the kind of people who complain. I know that for something this major we should have, until everything was right. How we let go when told that "this never worked" and "this outlet doesn't work anymore" I don't know. That's our own fault.

The price that was quoted was more than double what we eventually paid; way too high!
Description of Work: Quoted the construction of a bathroom in the basement.
Crockett Home Improvement just completed 100% renovation of both of my mid-70's vintage bathrooms, and I could not be happier with the results. Owner George Crockett listened carefully to my renovation plans and concerns at the start of this process, and he met with me several times to formulate proposals that would work for me personally. He was always available by phone or e-mail, usually replying within a couple of hours, even on weekends and at night. I know that George stands behind all of his company's work, and that he will immediately address any customer concerns. Contractors Earl Shortridge and Johnny Snook performed the work, so I knew that the outcome would be entirely satisfactory: they renovated both of my parents' bathrooms last year, and those projects exceeded all expectations. Prior to starting both projects, Earl spent most of a Saturday with us, shopping for fixtures, vanities, flooring, lighting, etc. His renovation skills and excellent taste made the selection process flow much more smoothly, and we knew that everything we chose would work perfectly. As for the work itself, I still can't believe that craftsmen can completely gut a 40 year-old bathroom, cut tile, hang drywall, etc., and manage to leave your house clean at the end of the day. Earl and Johnny always left my home neat and in good order- I was consistently pleasantly surprised to find my home immaculate when I came from work. They are skilled in all construction/renovation trades : plumbing, electrical, drywall, flooring, carpentry, you name it. Earl designed and built the vanity and medicine cabinet in one of my baths, and they are absolutely beautiful, in both design, appearance, and quality. Throughout the process, Earl and Johnny made excellent suggestions regarding design and construction, but they always listened very carefully to my suggestions and worked hard to make my plans come to fruition. Both bathrooms are now finished, and the quality of workmanship is outstanding. Every detail is perfect- and I am pretty darned picky. The baths are beautiful, and they fit perfectly with the overall character of my home. I would not change a single thing. And my house is so clean, you would never imagine that a major construction project just wrapped. I can't imagine taking on another home renovation project in the future without Crockett Home Improvement. George has made the process so pleasant and easy, and his commitment to customer satisfaction has been rock-solid. Earl and Johnny are excellent craftsmen and complete professionals- honest, reliable, trustworthy, punctual, and just plain nice. I'll miss having them in my home. I can't say enough good things about these gentleman- and I know that somewhere in my future, an amazing kitchen renovation is waiting to happen.

Thank you very much for taking your time and writing such a nice review, we appreciate that!. It has been a pleasure to work with you! Would be happy to do any next remodeling project for you!
The roofers arrived at about 8:00 and started at about 8:30 a.m. They put tarps on both the front and back side of the roof to catch all the old debris (good thing too; I think the roof was the original on the house and the old shingles almost disintegrated when they were removed). The workers had the old roof off quickly and started to repair a couple of sections along the front of the roof. They then put down the new felt paper and drip edges. Finally, the shingles went up fairly fast, with the entire job being completed at about 3:30 p.m. A little later another worker showed up with a magnetic rake, for the lack of a better term, and swept the yard for nails and other sharp objectives, and generally got any debris that the roofers missed. It generally went very well. I was a little surprised no one from the company came by to check on the work just to make sure the roofers did what they were supposed to because I wouldn't know.
Description of Work: Crockett Home Improvement put on a new roof for me. They removed the old shingles, repaired a couple of soft spots in the roof, put new collars around a couple of vent pipes and the electric pole as well as flashing around the chimney. They then put down new 15 lb. felt paper and new drip edge on both sides of the house. They also installed new Owens Corning Architectural shingles.

I have no idea why this company is rated so well. I went to them because of their great ratings. They came right out to do the measurements and then fell off the face of the earth. Never heard back from them at all. I constantly called them for weeks and they said they got busy and did not have time to write my estimate. The ordered service was supposed to be a detailed inspection of our roof, including minor repairs, resealing, and photos taken of other areas that needed more extensive maintenance. Mr. Crockett did a 20 minute visual inspection of the top of our roof on October 28. On October 29 he delivered two written estimates, one for roof replacement and one for minor shingle repair. I believe this is precisely what we would have gotten if we had requested a free estimate. I asked Mr. Crockett when he intended to schedule executing the work we hired him for. He did not answer me directly, but instead sent me a revised estimate showing a $200 credit for shingle repair. At this point I asked him for a refund, since it was clear he did not intend to do the specified service. He has not responded to that in the last 36 hours, so I am taking it up with you. I am not interested in pursuing any work, including the original work, with this contractor because he has been so unresponsive.

I called this company approximately 1 month ago (July 2014) after I saw the name on Angie's List. I talked to a man who then set up an appointment and come to my residence to give me an estimate for my stairs. I even told him that I found his name on Angie's List. But, the appointment date came and went and NOBODY showed up! Nobody called to tell me they were not going to be at the residence. Did they lose my telephone number? They still had my address if they did. On August 13th around 1500 hrs, almost a month later, I received a telephone call from Crockett Home Improvement. Her name was Susan. She said she was told to call me and ask me if I was still interested in the concrete job. No apology, no explanation as to why they ditched my appointment. I can only speculate they were too busy for a small job like mine and waited until they needed some work? I don't know. Nevertheless, they DID have my telephone number (since they were able to call me on August 13th) and they could have called me to advise they would not be here on the scheduled date and time. Is it too much to ask for a courtesy call? This is unacceptable and unprofessional. This happens too often in the City of Roanoke. People take the time to stay at home when they have other things to do on that day and yet, contractors seem not to care about our day and our plans. Crockett Home Improvement boasts about being on Angie's List, and they may well do good work, but not calling with no apology and then calling a month later with no apology from the boss is just wrong. When I talked to Susan about them ditching my appointment, she acted apathetic/unconcerned about the failure to show up for the appointment and didn't seem to care that I was upset. All she wanted to know is if I was still wanting an estimate. Didn't offer to put a supervisor on the phone or try to make it right with a discount or something.
