I was a little leery that they charged $89 just to diagnose, but it was well worth it as a previous company had tried to take me for a ride, telling me I had a bad compressor and quoting me $1400 to fix it (and strongly suggesting I just replace my whole system). The Smith & Keene tech quickly determined the problem was a bad capacitor on the inside unit, nothing was wrong with the compressor outside at all. Once the capacitor was replaced everything worked like a charm. Total cost: $230. My system is older and I may replace it in the future if it starts to break down, and when it does I would most likely contact Smith & Keene--certainly not those "other people".
Description of Work: Came out to diagnose a problem with my heat pump. I was getting a second opinion as another company said I had a bad compressor and quoted me a ton of money to fix it or just replace the whole system.

We have a maintenance agreement with them. We had that maintenance agreement for the past eighteen years. The annual contract gets you two free inspections and somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% off on parts and 100% off on labor. The service has been great. It has been so great that we had them put in a new furnace and air conditioning unit in.
Description of Work: For heating and AC, I have used Smith And Keene. The last time they came was for an annual AC check. They come out twice a year. They check our AC unit once a year and then, our furnace once a year.

I called Smith and Keene at 8:00 a.m. on 6/18/14 after a miserable afternoon and night the day before due to our air conditioner going out. I was told that they would work us in, and that I could call throughout the day (which I did!) to see how close the technician was to coming to our house. He got there at 7:00 p.m. and by 8:00 p.m., we had air conditioning again. I know they were extremely busy all day because of the heat wave we've been having, so my husband and I were beyond pleased that we were able to get service the same day. We can't say enough about Smith and Keene, as they have been providing maintenance to our aged heating/air conditioning system since shortly after purchasing our house in 1993. We are convinced the only reason we still have our original system is thanks to Smith and Keene. Their customer service is top notch and their technicians are extremely knowledgeable. We appreciate Smith and Keene!

Called Smith & Keene at 8:15 AM, Richard, the technician, arrived at 9:35 AM, diagnosed the problem, soldered the hole, and refilled the Freon. He explained the problem and I signed the invoice and he was driving away by 10:40 AM. Thanks Richard. Whole visit covered by extended warranty, no cost to us. Smith & Keen gets A's for great response, great professional, and great warranty.

I originally bought my heat pump from Smith and Keene 12 years ago and although the warranty had run out, I decided that I would trust them to fix the heater. About two weeks ago I came back from a trip and I heard a loud sound coming from my heat pump. I called Smith and Keene and they sent, Brian, a technician out to check it out. The service call cost $89.00 and he said that my compressor was cracked and I needed a new compressor and the compressor with labor would cost $1682.00. So, two days later he installed the new compressor. THEN two weeks later my heat pump was making the same noise. I called Smith and Keene and they sent another technician out (at my request). Now, you can imagine that I am quite suspicious by this time that the heat pump could be doing exactly the same thing after a new compressor. THIS TIME the technician, Dennis, said that I needed a new fan motor and it would cost $459.00 AND he just happened to have one with him. Now, what are the chances that something could go wrong two weeks later, it was something different even though the heater was doing the exact same thing, AND that they happen to have the part on the truck? Sorry but it doesn't add up. I gave them an F for professionalism because I believe that their tactics were not on the Up and Up. The technicans are quite nice so don't get me wrong but in my opinion I would never use this company again . I will have to buy a new heating system in a few years and I will NOT use them. I would advise anyone considering them to be careful.

es 12/31 and they were closed on New year's Day. They came on 1/2 to fix the heat pump. I was without heat for over a week. Although (Smith and Keene )say that service is their number one priority don't believe them. If you are on warranty they really don't care about you because you are not paying for the service (although I did pay over $1,000 for the extended warranty). When the warranty is up in February I will be going elsewhere. Because Smith and Keene does not work on holidays Christmas, I called on Thursday 12/26 to tell them my heat was not working. They gave me an appt for 12/27. The serviceman said a part had to be ordered and it would be a week to 10 days because of New Years. I called the office and said that is not acceptable I have no heat (just a fireplace and an electric heater). The woman I spoke to said that she would talk to the service manager and call me back. She never called me back. On Mon. I called and spoke to the service manager (John Jones)he said no one had spoken to him. The part was not going to come in until Tues SEE ABOVE

They came out under a home warranty program; I had no choice and had to use them. It all turned out fine. There was some cost involved that I was not aware of. I signed something when they first came out to diagnose the problem, but I already knew what it was. After I signed the thing I was gone a couple of days later when they brought the new hot water tank. My husband paid the bill, but there was a connection that was billed for an not added. There was a $50 permit that I did not realize they had to get from the county. So there were a few other charges, but they reimbursed me back for some of them. I had to pay extra because it needed to be a two person team and those are things that the home warranty did not pay for. There was a $75 disposal fee for the old hot water tank. The work was done and they came on time. We also had a sewer back-up so they came out to diagnose that issue. They tried to clean out the pipe, but told me the problem was with the county.

We returned from vacation in August to a full house sauna; the AC was out for 4 days in 90-102F The staff was excellent, they promptly sent a technician on a Sunday. He had the corrent replacements parts in his truck, we were cool quickly. I now carry an annual service agreement with them. Smith & Keen have been very helpful and most fair over the past 7-8 years. Did excellent job on replacing air conditioning unit. Concern - the day before the former air conditioning unit broke, Smith & Keene performed the semi-annual "preventive maintenance" visit. Unit worked great until the day after the visit. And disappointing the "preventive maintenance " visit didn't notice a unit on the brink of failing!

We have had an issue with condensation from the AC unit duct work in the past. The repair person knew our history. They came out and said he could not find any water marks or mold. They did not want to find any issue with the unit the installed. My wife over heard the S&K employee on the phone stating he had a couple more of these BS calls and would be back. Later we had another person come in and found condensation water dripping and mold on the ceiling. I will terminate my contract with S&K,,, they are useless.

In April of 2010 we had a geothermal heating and air conditioning system installed in our home. Since that time, Smith and Keene had to come out three times for service. Each time more freon had to be added to the system, but no leak detection was performed. On one of the service calls, a new thermostat was installed under warranty. During one of the calls, the technician stated that this system should never had been installed in our home as it was not suitable for it. At that point, I lost all confidence in the company. Initially the system worked fine. At the first season change, it would not work well. We went through the first winter with the system constantly running and the backup heat was always on. This ran up my electric bill. When this was mentioned to the technician, the solution was to put more freon in and tweak the system. It would then work until the next season change. Additionally the system would not turn off when we had a fire and the temperature in the house would be above what we had the thermostat set at. We were told then that the heat coming out of the vents would be lower than that of other types of heating systems. In May of 2013, I had another company come out for service. The technician that came out from the other company found that the original thermostat was not the correct one for the system. Additionally he found that the system was not wired correctly at the initial installation. Since then, the system has been running fine. The bill came out to almost $1000. I took the bill to Smith and Keene t see if they would pay it as I felt that it was their fault to begin with. They got kind of snooty with me saying that I should have sent them a certified letter saying i was going to go with another company so they could have a chance to fix the system. I told them that they had at least 4 chances of fixing the system and failed. The end result was they agreed that the thermostat was the wrong one, and they agreed to pay half the bill. I will not go back to them, nor recommend them to anyone.

The person who came out was very helpful, and pointed out things we definitely may need to help make our home more energy efficient. I felt there might be some conflict of interest though, since this company sells home-improvement products, it's in their interest to recommend home improvements. It was wonderful of them to do a free in-home estimate, but we want to get a second opinion to be sure the recommended improvements are necessary. The company seems to be professional, and if we decide to have service done, we would be happy to have them do the service.

In 2010 Smith and Keene was a sub-contractor to our new home builder to install Electrical, AC, Heat, Plumbing and Water Heater. During water heater install different metals (copper and steel) were used where plumbing connects to water heater. This mistake created electrolysis which eventually resulted in the pipes corroding and beginning to leak. It took over two years for the pipes to begin to leak and fortunately I noticed them leaking before further and possibly more extensive damage was done. This two year period was well beyond the one year warranty that came with the new house. In the Fall of 2012 I called Mr. Larry Miller, the Smith and Keene Service Manager, who responded in a very professional manner. He asked to examine the corroded pipes that were replaced by a local plumbing company, acknowledged the Smith and Keene error and reimbursed me for the full cost to repair the pipes leading to the water heater. I was impressed with the speed and professionalism he handled this issue. Although the quality of the original work was unacceptable, Smith and Keene responded in a very professional manner to resolve the issue.

The person that came did an "HVAC" inspection and I believe did a VERY good job, but I didn't schedule an HVAC inspection, I scheduled an Air Duct inspection. Rationale..... I have blown insulation coming from a ceiling vent in my daughters room onto her window. I mentioned this during the scheduling and when the gentleman came to the house. He stated the insulation inspection cost a lot more, though I expected to get a $125 Rebate after paying Smith& Keene from Dominion Power, so was ok with paying for it if it fixed the problem and made the room more comfortable. ** Gentleman stated I should call the office and explain and I have called TWO times and left messages and NO RETURN calls. ** that said, the inspection and cost is valid for on year and I was told I had a spring inspection and one more fall inspection now covered under this "Maintenance Agreement". Ok, so I paid 5 months ago to another company, but if I get a spring and a fall inspection, I am ok with this. (only cause the gentleman that came was very professional and I trust him. ***** Issue is the maintenance pamphlet comes in the mail and stated a "Transportation Fee" of $79 for showing up for the inspections! THAT cost was never mentioned and seems like a BAD BUSINESS practice to SLIDE it in after-THE-FACT! I would use them again in terms of service, at least the man that came to the house, but I am not comfortable and could NOT recommend them based on charging me for the wrong service, and the fact they are NOW charging the “Transportation Fee” which assimilates to ANOTHER annual charge on top of the paid contract cost and this “Transportation Fee” was never discussed, just added into the pamphlet. It’s like bringing your car in for brakes and NO brake work done, but they DID rotate the tires and change the oil that you JUST had DONE. Then they tell you, oh, by the way, we will be charging you ANOTHER $160 next year ($79 Spring, $79 fall) for service under contract. I question the business practice and don't recommend Smith& Keene unless they clear up and either credit their mistake or come back and do the inspection so I can put my claim in for the rebate I expected when I first scheduled the appointment.
Description of Work: CALLED and SCHEDULED for Air Duct Cleaning from Dominion Power Rebates. I specifically asked for Air Duct inspection and Cleaning per the pamphlet Dominion sent to get an Air Duct issue resolved and better energy efficiency and to claim the Rebate offered by Dominion Power. Smith & Keene were on the Dominion list for service providers. I did not ask for an HVAC inspection as I just had one completed in June 1012, less then 5 months prior, so paying for that service and not getting the Air Duct inspection and not being able to claim for a rebate to lower the cost, seems like a gimmick to me.

We had gotten quotes from another company as well as Smith & Keene and about 2 weeks later our ac went out. We had decided on Smith & Keene anyway, so we called them and explained our situation. A salesman came out the next day, and were informed the initial person to give us the quote was no longer with them. (He was accepted at a school he had been trying to get into, so left Smith & Keene to go to school) At any rate, he honored the quote and reminded us that Costco had a gift card rebate offer in their mailing, if we were Costco members. Which we are, so it was a blessing for us!Because of our situation, we had the entire system installed by the end of the week and the duct cleaning people came a couple of days later. All of the people we dealt with were kind, professional and efficient. A week or so later the ac went out and they came out immediately to fix it, we had a noise from the air intake register and within a few days they came out and resolved that issue. Prompt, efficient, friendly, polite and excellent pricing. We are extremely happy with our new system.I would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Removed our old, broken ac unit, gas furnace and gas water heater then installed complete heating & air conditioning system, gas hot water heater and cleaned all of the duct work .
