My husband called them this morning and a few hours later Josh was here. He checked everything, gave us the cost of fixing and replacing any outlets that needed replaced. He was very patient with us and answered every question we had. Josh is a very pleasant and cheerful young man and we think he did a great job. I just thought their services were on the expensive side. Did appreciate the senior's discount though.
Description of Work: None of the outlets in the master bedroom worked. He checked all upstairs outlets and bedroom light switch. Examined circuit panel. Replaced outlets in master bedroom as well as light switch.

My downstairs toilet was backing up every time we washed, showered, or flushed. He was on time and professional. I've used Michael and Sons many times and they have always been more expensive than others, but I knew the work would be done right and guaranteed. The problem was he wouldn't show me the before work contract that I usually sign. Then quoted me $669 to drain the pipe from my downstairs to the city line. This would involve removing a toilet, running his machine, and putting it back. After looking up normal prices for this service and speaking to a good friend, we decided this was over half of the normal pricing for a job like this. Glad we went with someone else. Saved us $400 for the same job!

DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY. The technicians lied and attempted to sign me up for a full system replacement ($7000) when only minor repairs were needed. Full story below. I'll be as brief as possible, but you really need to hear some of the details within. All of this actually happened. Our heat wasn't working, so we called Michael & Sons because they were recommended by family. We have a dual-fuel system (electric heat pump supplemented by natural gas for emergency / extreme cold heating needs). The technician showed up promptly and conducted a full inspection and analysis of our system. It took him about 90 minutes to complete and seemed very thorough. When he was finished, I asked him what was needed to bring the system back online. I was told that all of the following issues were discovered: - Excessive refrigerant leaks with refrigerant accumulated in the system pan - Numerous visible cracks in the heating coil posing a potentially fatal carbon monoxide threat - A significant power mismatch between heat pump and furnace that resulted in major efficiency and lifespan issues - Improper natural gas hose (flexible) leading to furnace His recommendation: - Could fix all components, but this would cost about $4000 and we'd still be left with a 10-yr-old system that would likely not last very long - Instead, replace whole system with a standard single-stage 15 SEER 80% gas furnace (3 ton) - Cost: $7702.20 He was quick to sign me up for financing (which I cleared through Wells Fargo) and then called in a 2nd Michael & Sons technician to confirm his findings -- which he stated was their policy anytime they found issues associated with natural gas / carbon monoxide leaks. The 2nd technician showed up much later and proceeded up into my attic along with the 1st technician. Here is where things got strange Unbeknownst to either tech, I quietly followed them up the ladder into my attic and remained out of sight while the 1st tech (presumably) explained the situation. Only instead of speaking aloud about the problems he found, he began whispering very quietly. I could not hear what he was saying to the 2nd tech, but whatever it was, he definitely did not want anyone else in that house hearing what he said. If I had to guess, it was something along the lines of "hey, I've already got this guy set up and approved for a full system reinstallation -- he just has to sign the papers." Obviously this is my guess, but keep reading. At this point, I quietly climbed back down the ladder and waited for them to finish their "work." After some time the 2nd tech came down and informed me that he had confirmed all of the 1st tech's findings and that he agreed with the full system installation recommendation, then went to his van while the 1st tech reassembled everything in the attic. I then followed the 2nd tech to his van where I found him on the phone and when he was done, I asked him plainly, "I followed you two up there to check out how things were going and I couldn't help but notice that your colleague was speaking to you very quietly about something. Do you mind telling me what you two were talking about that you apparently didn't want anyone else to hear?" I could tell that this was the last thing he expected to hear from a customer, and his answer was, "Did we really talk quietly about anything? Wow, you know, I just don't remember at all what it was about!" I assured him that I knew for a fact that they had indeed been whispering to each other, and that it had only occurred about 10 minutes prior, so I was surprised that he had already completely forgotten about a conversation he just had that was important enough to handle so discreetly. Once I had both technicians in my living room after that, I thanked them for their time and told them that before I commit to anything as large as a full system reinstallation, I was going to get a 2nd opinion from an independent provider. They were visibly disappointed with this and intimated that they expected the next vendor to just undercut them by a few hundred dollars and take the business. I told them that if a second opinion confirmed all their findings, I'd be glad to keep my business with Michael & Sons, but if they didn't -- or if their quote to fix it was significantly less, then I would have to think twice about that. They collected their things and left. The next night, I had a technician from One-Hour come out and conduct another inspection. I did not tell him he was the 2nd opinion, I just wanted to see what he found. After his inspection, he found: - No refrigerant leaks or refreigerant in the system pan - No cracks visible in the heating coil - The heat exchanger was pulling air in properly At that point, I told him what the M&S techs had found and he said he didn't see anything like that, but that he owuld bring in a 2nd opinion from his team to check. The 2nd tech arrived later and the 1st tech left -- they didn't even talk to each other because it's their policy not to bias their findings. We were then pleasantly surprised to find that the 2nd tech from One-Hour was an old friend of my wife's -- finally, someone we could trust. He actually used a flexible snake-camera to take high-resolution detailed pictures of the heating coil from all angles inaccessible by a person alone (something M&S did not do -- they said the cracks were clearly visible) -- confirmed: zero cracks in heating coil. He also conducted a refrigerant leak test with an electronic detector -- confirmed: zero refrigerant leaks found. He reviewed the recommended fixes and strongly advised against a full system reinstallation, and couldn't understand why anyone would want to exchange a powerful dual-fuel system for a single-phase electric-only heat pump. He thought the problem could be fixed by rewiring the thermostat to correctly control the system. We approved this work and he made the needed adjustments. The system immediately began working perfectly. Total cost came to $169. We haven't had any problems since, and have installed multiple carbon monoxide detectors around the house that haven't detected a thing. DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY. They were prompt and courteous, but teamed up to defraud me and my family. They would have gladly signed me up to install a new, lower quality system for thousands of dollars instead of performing a simple fix. I dodged a bullet through the good fortune of having a family friend unexpectedly show up and expose Michael & Sons' fraudulence, but I was just a signature away from putting myself another $7000 in debt to a lying, manipulative, uncaring company.
Description of Work: Air Conditioning / Heating system was not working during extremely cold temperatures. Michael & Sons technicians conducted on-site system inspection and provided recommendations to address issue.

I have had Michael and Sons Home Service Agreement for almost a year. This agreement includes yearly maintenance of your heating and AC systems and if needed, weekend visits and no dispatch fee. They have also installed new lighting in my home as well. I've been pleased with them with the exception of the last couple of times I've called needing plumbing services because of a clogged toilet. I was told that I would be seen "on call" meaning whenever they had a opening within the next 24 hours. I got off early from work to have someone to come at 8:30 at night to unclog the toilet. The second time, the issue resolved itself, so I wound up cancelling my call that day. Their plumbing department needs help badly!!

I ordered a new energy efficient heat pump from Michael and Son on December 4th and arranged for the installation to be done on December 7th. I received a call from Marcus, one of the installation team, early that Saturday morning letting me know what time to expect them. When the team (Marcus and Randy) arrived, they didn?t mind taking the time to get to know our dogs once I explained that it would be so much easier for all of us after the dogs got to know them a little. I even slipped a few dog treats to Randy, which the dogs eagerly accepted from him along with a lot of petting and ear scratching. After the introductions were over, I put up gates to keep the dogs out of their way so they could work without interruptions. They covered the entire work area from the front door to the attic access in the hallway with drop cloths. Both Marcus and Randy were very quick to respond to any questions we had while they were working. After the installation was completed, Marcus thoroughly explained how to set the new thermostat and gave me the manual for the thermostat for future reference. Randy asked my husband to come into the attic with him so he could show him the furnace and explain some things about the drainage. Marcus asked us if it would be alright to leave the manual for the furnace on top of the unit in the attic so it would be there for the technician just in case there?s ever a problem with the unit. We agreed that it would be best to do that. Marcus and Randy were very polite and professional at all times. They both worked hard for several hours to get the entire system installed. The weather that day was rather dreary but thankfully it wasn?t raining since there was quite a bit of work outside the house as well. I have to say that I?m glad I chose Michael and Son because everything went smoothly. It?s been two weeks since the installation and everything is working perfectly. Kudos go out to Marcus and Randy for making this a very pleasant experience.

We had an issue with out water pressure and couldn't figure it out, even had the water company check the pressure to the house. Then we called around to different companies to get estimates for the diagnosis. We decided on Michael & Sons. They sent Don. He was knowledgeable, courteous, and genuine; the type of guy that your grandparent's would appreciate. He came in and got right to work. I gave him the symptoms and we went over the possibilities. Within 30 minutes the issue was diagnosed and corrected. I've read other reviews about this company and some haven't been too good. I promise that if Don were dispatched to your location you would have the same great service I received. Bottom line is, I would recommend MIchael & Sons to any friend, coworker, or family member. He made us feel like he cared and that goes a long way in my book! Thanks again Don.

The rep disassembled the unit, reported that a complete replacement of at least the heat exchanger was required, did not reassemble the unit or conduct a thorough inspection of the unit. I contacted RS Andrews to get a second opinion and they provided me with the actual cause of failure, did a temp repair and provided me a cost estimate for complete repair and ordered the single part that was required. Unlike M&S who provided me with exorbitant estimates to replace my heat exchanger (not required) to the entire HVAC unit (definitely not required!). I will not be utilizing their services again due to deceptive practices.

[Member Name Removed] has a cracked heat exchanger on his furnace. It is unfortunate that another company will put him at risk by allowing him to operate a unit that can expose him to carbon monoxide. I spoke to [Member Name Removed] and offered to come out and show him the crack in the heat exchanger but he declined. Sometimes the messenger "gets shot" for delivering bad news. Michael & Son Services will not allow our customers to put themselves at risk, we care about your wellbeing.

Originally, we bought the A/C in April - but we had technicians from Michael and Son come out on a regular basis to try to get it working correctly. By August, Mike Kiser brought his techs to the house and had his team come back to work on it. They figured out that the issue was the unit had the compression set for a 2 ton unit - when they set the compression for a 3 ton unit, it worked fine. I appreciate that Mike Kiser took an interest in making sure the unit was fixed properly after months of having issues with it. Troy came out to service the A/C and he was prompt and professional doing the regularly scheduled service. Also, for a separate job, Mike ensured that electricians came over to finish a job in the bathroom with canned recessed lights. The electrician that came over was Josh, who was finishing a job that was originally started by Antonio, but we had to wait a few months to finish hooking up the lights because of some plumbing work being done on the second floor. Josh was professional and fast, finishing the job in less than a half hour.

They arrived late due to a complication of finding the correct unit . However .. Once they arrived they were extremely professional and worked all day and into the evening . Our technician was Floyd he was very professional and I strongly urge you to ask for him . His work ethic was amazing and he never quit until the job was completed. I am very happy with the whole experience. A negative is They could have called to let us know about the late start and the reason why, but, once they arrived everything was perfectly done and heat was running by the evening. Very well established company with extremely polite technicians. I would do business again for sure and be sure to ask for Floyd.

Called Micheal and Sons due to the gas pack not working. Troy inspected the unit and found that the heat exchanger was shot. Unit had lots of corrosion and was 14 years old. I knew that the duct work was in bad shape. Troy and I discussed options and I made the decision that a new unit was in order. Troy recommended a York gas pack unit with 10 year warranty. This was on a Saturday. The unit was ordered on Monday and Nate and his assistant showed up to install the unit on Tuesday. It took 4 days in install the unit and new ducting. Nate and his helper were very professional and did an outstanding job on the install. They went out of their way to ensure I was happy and to explain what they were doing. During the install Nate's supervisor, Mike came by to ensure everything was to my satisfaction. The only issue was that when I went to pay for the unit. I thought I was getting special financing that was not shown on the paperwork. Nate called his boss ad then called Troy. Troy called me within 10 minuites to explain that there was a mix up on the paperwork and that he would be out the next day with the correct paperwork. Troy showed up on time and all was taken care of in minutes. I am very happy with the install Nate and his assistant (sorry I don't remember his name) did an outstanding job and were very professional. Troy found the issue with my old unit right away, Took his time to show me the problems and to explain my options. The issue with the financing was taken care of promptly and with no inconvenience to me. I will use Michael and Son for future work.

Phillip showed up within the allotted four-hour timeslot and verified that my toilet was, in fact, clogged. He then went around the house looking for the two-way valve and not finding it, wrote up an estimate of various repairs ranging in price from $160 all the way up to and exceeding $4,000! I asked him to snake to line but he said he'd have to remove the toilet to do that, which was the above-mentioned $160 repair. So I told him I'd need a day to mull over the estimates and make an informed decision. Later I went online, found a few suggestions and high-tailed it to a local home repair store and bought a good quality 6-foot closet auger for $50. It took me all of five minutes to clear the block and I didn't even have to remove the toilet! Add to that expense an additional $7 for a jar of enzymes to clear up any build-up and I repaired my own commode for a fraction of what Michael and Sons wanted to charge me.

After purchasing the tankless hot water heater separately, Michael and Son installed the system on May 7, 2013. My wife asked Ryan about permits and he said everything was taken care of. We later found out that Ryan had not pulled permits for the job despite the fact that my invoice had a $175 charge for a plumbing permit. It was not until we asked a City of Norfolk inspector why no one had come to check the water heater that we found out Michael and Son had not pulled permits. At that point, they pulled a permit for gas and plumbing, but not electrical (permit is dated June 18, 2013 - more than a month after the install). The permit was only $40, yet I was charged $175 for it. The install was fast, and we later realized that Ryan had tied into mostly the existing lines only adding a few new connections. It has been some time and the plumbing and gas permits are clear, but electric is not and the electrical inspector has stated that Michael and Son must be present for the next inspection, so if it fails again, they can work on it. The system itself has many periods where the "on demand" hot water is cold on the other side of the house and Ryan explained that cold water gets "sandwiched" and there would be periods when the water was not hot. My system that was installed in Fredericksburg two years ago is the same model and covers almost the same square footage, but when the water gets hot, it stays hot. Also, the A/C team from Michael and Son had to finish Ryan Dean's job by isolating the old hot water heater wire that was left hanging, then wrapped the hot and cold water pipes outside and enclosed it for winterization. We are very disappointed with Michael and Son. It is August and the system was installed in May and the permit is not clear yet. I don't recommend them. UPDATE 1: After I had made my post, Mr. Kiser came to my house with his plumber, A/C tech and he represented electrical. His team brought the electrical work up to code, fixed the A/C and did some plumbing troubleshooting that was outside the scope of their work. The inspectors have returned and all inspections for Michael and Son have passed. I appreciate that Mr. Kiser took a look with his team and got through the inspections.
