Through all of this, clean up was also being done so they weren't waiting until the end of the job so the yard was kept very clean. Very happy with the outcome of the job, their efficiency and professionalism.

I first requested an estimate on getting a strip of my yard landscaped due to a requirement by the city of Virginia beach. I had to have the estimate because my chain link fence had to be replaced due to an accident. According to zoning regulations not in effect at the original fence installation, the fence had to be moved in 5 feet and landscaping installed. I needed the estimate to get repayment by the insurance company. I emailed multiple companies on Angies list, but only one responded. K&J Landscaping answered all of my emails and provide me with an estimate. I went with K&J and everything went very smoothly. K&J came out and we went over a choice of shrubs. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. After deciding on the shrubs, he put in the order and a couple of weeks later installed the shrubs on the day that he had promised. One of the shrubs has started showing signs of heat/wind damage, but with the drought that is to be expected. And K&J has offered to replace it if it dies. Overall they shrubs look good. I have already had some of my neighbors tell me how nice it all looks. I would definitely use them again.

We had a terrific experience with K&J. We were kind of picky about the mulch that we wanted and Kregg came by our house with samples to choose from, and to give us an estimate. We set a date for the work to be done, and they showed up right on time. They were friendly, professional and kind to my two children. We had a lot of landscaping to mulch and they didn't skimp anywhere, it looks amazing and I couldn't be happier. Kregg also gave me good advice about how to maintain some of the plants and bushes in our yard and recommended what to put in an empty shady space that I wasn't sure what to do with. He saved me hours of research by sharing his expertise for free! I will be using them for not only future mulch needs, but any landscaping needs in the future.

First Kregg did not inform us of when he would be showing up to do the work. He only said he would be here the week of March 15th. When he emailed me this I assumed he would call or email us when he was sure of the exact day of the week he would be doing the work so that my husband or I could make sure we were home. He did not do this, I had an appointment on the 17th and arrived home that afternoon to find Kregg and one of his employees working in our yard. He had already removed all of the pavers and had dug the trench for the drainage pipe on the left side of the house. Kregg informed me that he had ran into the sprinker heads on that side of the house, at this time I was not too upset about those particular sprinklers because that side of the yard stayed wet most of the time anyway, I was however upset that he did not stop and call either my husband or I to inform us of what was going on when ran into the first one and I was irritated that he didn't think it was necessary to cap of the line at the point where he had cut into it. Kregg and his employee continued to work on the other side of the house where he then ran into what he told me, after he was finished, he thought was a black electric box. I found out the next day that this black box is the control box for part of our sprinkler system so as of now the sprinkler system will not function properly. He did not take me over and show me what he had ran into, he just threw it on the ground where he had dug it up and left it there. He acted like he didn't know what it was and that it wasn't a big deal. He cleaned up a bit, I paid him and he left. It was dark that evening when my husband got home so he was unable to look at the work that night and he had to work all night the next day as well so on friday, two days after Kregg performed the work my husband was able to look at it and he was amazed at what a terrible job he had done. Not only did he ruin our sprinkler system, the drainage pipe on the left side is not installed properly and does not drain correctly and does not lead to the street as stated in the estimate. We also discovered that Kregg made a curb cut on the right side of the house (it is not stated in the estimate that he would be doing this) that is illegal because he did not get a permit from the city to do so. I have called the city about this and they have told me there is a $150 fine plus the cost of the permit. Upon further investigation we have found out that K & J Lawn and Garden Service does not have a Virginia State Contractors Class C license as required for any business giving estimates over $1000 for any single job including labor, materials and taxes. The license this company has is only a business license with the city of Chesapeake. We have contacted Kregg about the sprinkler problem and about the curb. He has told us that the sprinkler system is not his fault because he claims he told me that the sprinklers had to be marked, which this is not true, he only said that it would be helpful but not necessary. If he had told me they must be marked then why did he start the job when he knew there were sprinklers and no sprinklers were marked when he arrived on the property to do the work? This is not the work of a professional! He also insinuated that our sprinkler system never worked and that we are trying to get his company to repair an already faulty system. This is not true and quite unprofessional and rude. Also when my husband originally mentioned the curb cut, which at the time we did not know had been done without the proper permits, he said "Oh, yeah, we had a hard time with that one", so he knew it was terrible and left it like that anyway. After my husband repeatedly told him how displeased we were with this he said he would come fix it, this was on Friday the 19th, as of yesterday the 24th we had heard nothing back from him about when he would be coming to fix the curb cut. We emailed him yesterday evening and told him we do not want his company back on our property to do any more work. We have not heard back from him since.

"Customer was notified to have sprinkler system marked during estimate phase of this job. Customer stated she would do so. Customer was notified on 3/12/2010 that we would be doing the job on 3/17/2010 (after Miss Utility had marked the lines). We started the job on 3/17/2010 with demolition of a paver area and installed the drainage in an area that we were led to believe had no irrigation. We inspected the area numerous times and found no sign of a sprinkler system. Customer failed to notify us that there were buried sprinkler heads in that area and after trenching, customer admitted to us that she forgot tell us, because they did not use that system. She also admitted in front of witnesses that it was unavoidable and not our fault. The drain exit on that side was agreed on by the customer during the estimate due to the tree growing at the end of the driveway. We did not want to risk damaging the tree. We did not proceed with the remainder of the job until we had cleared it with the customer and she gave us the go ahead, because we were concerned with the lack of irrigation marking on the right side of the house. The customer told us to proceed because she already knew that she needed to have work done on the sprinkler system. Additional, the customer promptly paid us for the job and appeared pleased with the work. The issues with this work appear to be a miscommunication between the customer and spouse. At this point K&J feels that this customer did not have a working sprinkler system and is attempting to use us as a pawn to get a new one. We have been lied to by the customer, threatened by the spouse and harassed in e-mail. Customer has even gone as far as to become a member of this service to further harass us into giving them a new sprinkler system. We did the job the customer asked for and under the customer’s direction."

Overall I was extremely happy with the work that Kregg did. I would definitely hire him again. I would recommend him to anyone I know as well. I felt that his price was fair and he has a very easy-going personality. He did an excellent job pruning the appropriate shrubs/trees. The fresh brown shredded mulch around the landscaping and trees looks wonderful. I'll be calling him back in the future!!! Thanks Kregg!!

I believe he may have come to my house 2 times in Sept and Oct and once in Nov and Dec. He did spend a good amount of time cleaning up my back yard that flooded from storms and has not been able to service back again due to a constant water problem. However, I asked him to please prune some very overly grown bushes months ago and they were never done. My front yard was so full of leaves and I e-mailed him about getting them up and got an unpleasent response. Since the largest yard area is in my back, I asked for a weekly fee for services done. His breakdown was absolutely outragious. I am going to search Angie's List and hope to find a more reasonable and reliable service.

"This customer had backyard water issues (soggy yard) since late August 2009. K&J has been unfairly reported on by this customer. We were a mid-season replacement for this customer because she was not satisfied with her previous provider. It should be noted that we had a signed written contract for service and also that she cancelled the contract without the required 30 day notice and was never charged more than the contracted amount. There is no justification for the grades she has given my company. Her contract called for the following services: Mowing/Edging 32 times per year, Pruning 4 times per year, Mulch Installation (7 cy brown) 1 time per year, Weeding/Spraying as needed, Fall/Spring Fertilizing, Core Aeration and Over Seeding 1 time per year, Fall Leaf Collection 4 times per year. Here is a breakdown of all services provided as contracted: - Provided weekly lawn service in August/September and bi-weekly in October/November. - Provided 2 prunings. - Fall aeration and fertilizing was completed. - Provided 4 leaf collections, one being a 6 man-hour storm debris clean-up. Since the storm debris clean-up was not a contracted item, it would have been $270, but since we had not been able to provide full lawn care to the back yard due to the excessive water in the yard (an act of nature), I thought it was a fair replacement. She did request hedge pruning on November 1, 2009 and we had it scheduled for the week of November 9, 2009 but due to a seviere Nor-easter storm, we were not able to accomplish the prunning. The bush/hedge pruning the customer wanted was planned for this summer and she was notified of such. It was delayed because of fall storms and based on recommended prunning cycle from the Virginia Coopertive Extension. The bushes are hollies and the recommended pruning time is June/July (as noted above, we started in August). Additionally, she never e-mailed me about front yard leaves needing to get up. I did however receive a very nice e-mail from her when we did our last leave collection right before Christmas. Here is the body of the e-mail I received from her on December 18, 2009: ā€œThank you so much for the big cleanup of leaves. I know there are some left to fall but the yard was looking pretty shabby. This next nor'easter should be yet another setback for the backyardā€"

From the initial call to the end of the job Kregg and company was great to work with. Due to work constraints I was able to work with Kregg through email. I found this to be a great way to get landscaping done in the yard without having the ability to always be on-site. The yard was cleaned of debris from mulch and topsoil that had to be spread in garden beds. I would recommend this company to anyone! Great work and communication from the company!

This was a great experience. He went and did the estimate, called me to followup and was completely done with the job 3 days later. It would have been even quicker if the mulch supplier had been open. I was so pleased that he answered his phone, was knowledgeable, and most importantly did exactly what he said he would do. A+++

It went really well. Kreg came exactly when he said he would and finished the job in two days, exactly like he said. He ended up saving me some money on the border and reused my roses that I didn't want to lose.

It was fine. I cannot speak for how good the price was because I only got the quote from them. The mulch quality and the guy was fine. He was very professional and easy to deal with. He was very responsive to our needs, came when he said he would, and did not take long to complete the project. He spent time actually talking about other options for the front yard after we finished and even gave me some advice about how to care for my plants in the future!

Kregg came in and did all of the curb appeal and replaced all of my box hedges, which were dead. He knew exactly what was happening in my yard. He replaced them with beautiful plants that gave good coverage. He did a beautiful job of mulching. They cleaned the yard beautifully. In the back yard where there was bad soil and a place where 3 dogs play, mulched the area and it looks beautiful and very natural. The trimming is amazing and the price could not be beat.

The work was very satisfactory, except that he is limited to trimming trees 20 feet in height or lower due to a lack of equipment and personnel outside those limits. There were some higher limbs on one tree that I would have liked to get trimmed. Kregg is very personable and tells you up front what he can do, so that is to his credit.
Response from K&J Lawn and Garden Service LLC
"This customer needed a tree service company but did not choose to contract one. K&J is a lawn care and landscaping company and we do low level tree pruning (normally less than 20 feet off the ground). The customer was told this during the estimate and that we recommended contracting a tree service company. Obviously, the customer chose K&J. The grade of "B" we received in "Punctuality" was due to arriving at the jobsite 5 minutes late...sometimes it is challenge to find a parking spot for a F250 w/ trailer in the older neighborhoods of Norfolk VA. Note: payment for this job was due within 10 days but took over 2 weeks to arrive."

Kregg originally did some tree pruning for me, which I was very happy with. He then sent me a proposal for re-landscaping around the three sides of the house. I thought the plan was good, and I thought the price was right. We made a few adjustments (I wanted a landing for grilling instead of another plant bed behind the deck wall), but overall his ideas were very much in line with what I had envisioned for our landscaping. So we agreed on a schedule and he showed up as planned to begin the work (actually, he started earlier, which I liked). He was consistently on time, reliable, and neat. He did a great job, finished on schedule (over Thanksgiving), and was very patient when it came to making minor adjustments on the placement of the slate. We had one minor miscommunication about final price of adjustment to slate, which was just as much my fault as his, and which is partially due to the fact that Kregg is still learning how to estimate material costs. But we resolved it.

I heard about Kregg through friends in the neighborhood who hired him to do some landscaping and gave me his card. Throughout the entire process, he was professional and courteous. He got the job done quickly, efficiently, and carefully. He put a great deal of time and thought into the job and considered aesthetics. He didn't just "cut away" at the trees. And he cleaned everything up and disposed of all branches and leaves. And what he charged was very reasonable. Now he is going to draw up a plan for some extended landscaping around the house.
