Description of Work: We purchased an Angie's List "Deal". K & J came out to look at what we wanted to have done and after discussion back and forth, it was apparent that the work we wanted to have done was not what the "deal" was for. K & J were kind enough to have our money refunded to us. Even though we cannot comment on their acutal services, they were punctual and responsive.

Description of Work: STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!!!! He came one time, tracked my lawn up so badly I had to have someone else come in to fix it. The lawn was not edged as the coupon stated it would be. When asked about this he said"What do you mean by edging?" Are you kidding me! When I asked for him to come out to see the damage he did to my lawn he never came. He was contracted to cut my lawn 4 times and never came back. This guy is unprofessional and a hack with lawns. Stay away.

Numerous attempts to contact the purchaser of this coupon were unsuccesful. Customer failed to comply with the coupon requirements and fine print. Property exceeded size alloted by coupon. Coupon was for regularly maintained lawns, this lawn was not, there was no existing knife edging or edging of any kind and it appeared to have been weeks since it was last mowed. Additionally, the customer did not ensure the yard was free of debris, pet waste and toys and did not notify us of pre-existing issues with wet areas or about a pet wandering free on the property (which became a hazard to mowing crew). The area in their report was only about 2 feet long in a back corner of the property and we offered to come out and fill in once yard was dry enough to work in. The only contact we had with this customer ws through a very rude phone call from her spouse who declined our offer to repair and stated they would have another company mow. We also offered a refund but never received an e-mail back from the actual person who purchased the Big Deal.

This experience was very bad!!!
Description of Work: It was amazing how unprofessional this company is.... My contract was for weed removal. I called the owner and stated that there was weed growing in my flower garden and I had sent him pictures. He said that it was due to the rain. I told him that my pictures had been taken before increased rain. I told him that since I had my service started I had been pulling my own weeds in my flower bed. Now, I see that they started placing this foam intermittently in my flower bed but still not of the weeds are being pulled. Just last week, the crew came and mowed my front and back yards. It had been raining hard a couple of days before . When I went out to take a look at the yard, there was mower tracks (where the grass had been pulled out) in both the front and back yards. I called the owner immediately and informed him that I needed this repaired ASAP. This happened Thurday of last week. The owner sent me an email stating that he would handle this damage. It is now Monday and nothing has been done. I still have wheel tracks and bare spots on my front and back yards. I am amazed how unprofesisonal this company has been. Please move on and do not hire this company!

This member, without the advice of this company, piled large amounts of soil/clay along her fence line in the back yard, causing the yard not to drain properly and to hold water. After a past issue where we did not mow her lawn because of weather, we decided to avoid another problem and attempt to mow (a catch 22). When our mower got stuck we told the member we would repair the hole once the yard dried out. She did not give us the opportunity to do so, posting this report the same day we came back to evaluate the condition of the lawn, which was still "swamped". As for the weeding, we received pictures of a "dime size" piece of bermuda grass in mulch that was taken 4 days after my crew was there spraying for weeds. I explained to here that it will take a few weeks to get the warm weather grasses that were lying dormant in her landscape under control and that pulling them will not solve the problem, they will only spread more. Spraying is the only way to get them under control. She was not satisfied with this correct answer. This customer also complained about some bushes we had planted a few months ago, stating they were not doing well. Upon examination, we discovered that she was not watering them. We do agree with this customer, this was a bad experience for us too.

As well as I could have hoped for.
Description of Work: K & J came out (in the rain) within a few hours of my phone call and gave me a very fair cost estimate for mowing, trimming, and taking care of my yard. They are going to cut and trim our property on a bi-weekly basis at $54.00 per cut. They also gave us some ideas for privacy planting as well as advice on eradicating some poison ivy that had invaded one our planting beds. Kregg was personable, knowledgeable, and responsive, all qualities not found in many service providers, unfortunately. I look forward to a positive business relationship with K & J.

First Kregg did not inform us of when he would be showing up to do the work. He only said he would be here the week of March 15th. When he emailed me this I assumed he would call or email us when he was sure of the exact day of the week he would be doing the work so that my husband or I could make sure we were home. He did not do this, I had an appointment on the 17th and arrived home that afternoon to find Kregg and one of his employees working in our yard. He had already removed all of the pavers and had dug the trench for the drainage pipe on the left side of the house. Kregg informed me that he had ran into the sprinker heads on that side of the house, at this time I was not too upset about those particular sprinklers because that side of the yard stayed wet most of the time anyway, I was however upset that he did not stop and call either my husband or I to inform us of what was going on when ran into the first one and I was irritated that he didn't think it was necessary to cap of the line at the point where he had cut into it. Kregg and his employee continued to work on the other side of the house where he then ran into what he told me, after he was finished, he thought was a black electric box. I found out the next day that this black box is the control box for part of our sprinkler system so as of now the sprinkler system will not function properly. He did not take me over and show me what he had ran into, he just threw it on the ground where he had dug it up and left it there. He acted like he didn't know what it was and that it wasn't a big deal. He cleaned up a bit, I paid him and he left. It was dark that evening when my husband got home so he was unable to look at the work that night and he had to work all night the next day as well so on friday, two days after Kregg performed the work my husband was able to look at it and he was amazed at what a terrible job he had done. Not only did he ruin our sprinkler system, the drainage pipe on the left side is not installed properly and does not drain correctly and does not lead to the street as stated in the estimate. We also discovered that Kregg made a curb cut on the right side of the house (it is not stated in the estimate that he would be doing this) that is illegal because he did not get a permit from the city to do so. I have called the city about this and they have told me there is a $150 fine plus the cost of the permit. Upon further investigation we have found out that K & J Lawn and Garden Service does not have a Virginia State Contractors Class C license as required for any business giving estimates over $1000 for any single job including labor, materials and taxes. The license this company has is only a business license with the city of Chesapeake. We have contacted Kregg about the sprinkler problem and about the curb. He has told us that the sprinkler system is not his fault because he claims he told me that the sprinklers had to be marked, which this is not true, he only said that it would be helpful but not necessary. If he had told me they must be marked then why did he start the job when he knew there were sprinklers and no sprinklers were marked when he arrived on the property to do the work? This is not the work of a professional! He also insinuated that our sprinkler system never worked and that we are trying to get his company to repair an already faulty system. This is not true and quite unprofessional and rude. Also when my husband originally mentioned the curb cut, which at the time we did not know had been done without the proper permits, he said "Oh, yeah, we had a hard time with that one", so he knew it was terrible and left it like that anyway. After my husband repeatedly told him how displeased we were with this he said he would come fix it, this was on Friday the 19th, as of yesterday the 24th we had heard nothing back from him about when he would be coming to fix the curb cut. We emailed him yesterday evening and told him we do not want his company back on our property to do any more work. We have not heard back from him since.
Description of Work: Kregg removed pavers, installed underground drainage on both sides of our house. The gutter downspouts on the right side and back were tied into this drainage system. The gutter downspout on the left was made to flow into a gravel area and into a pipe that was suppose to lead to the street.

Customer was notified to have sprinkler system marked during estimate phase of this job. Customer stated she would do so. Customer was notified on 3/12/2010 that we would be doing the job on 3/17/2010 (after Miss Utility had marked the lines). We started the job on 3/17/2010 with demolition of a paver area and installed the drainage in an area that we were led to believe had no irrigation. We inspected the area numerous times and found no sign of a sprinkler system. Customer failed to notify us that there were buried sprinkler heads in that area and after trenching, customer admitted to us that she forgot tell us, because they did not use that system. She also admitted in front of witnesses that it was unavoidable and not our fault. The drain exit on that side was agreed on by the customer during the estimate due to the tree growing at the end of the driveway. We did not want to risk damaging the tree. We did not proceed with the remainder of the job until we had cleared it with the customer and she gave us the go ahead, because we were concerned with the lack of irrigation marking on the right side of the house. The customer told us to proceed because she already knew that she needed to have work done on the sprinkler system. Additional, the customer promptly paid us for the job and appeared pleased with the work. The issues with this work appear to be a miscommunication between the customer and spouse. At this point K&J feels that this customer did not have a working sprinkler system and is attempting to use us as a pawn to get a new one. We have been lied to by the customer, threatened by the spouse and harassed in e-mail. Customer has even gone as far as to become a member of this service to further harass us into giving them a new sprinkler system. We did the job the customer asked for and under the customer’s direction.

Overall I was extremely happy with the work that Kregg did. I would definitely hire him again. I would recommend him to anyone I know as well. I felt that his price was fair and he has a very easy-going personality. He did an excellent job pruning the appropriate shrubs/trees. The fresh brown shredded mulch around the landscaping and trees looks wonderful. I'll be calling him back in the future!!! Thanks Kregg!!
Description of Work: I found Kregg and his company on Angie's List and he did a wonderful job!! Back in January 2010, he did some pruning and put new mulch around all of our lanscaping and trees. He gave me a discount because it was done during the winter months. I am VERY PLEASED with his work!!! I was impressed with the amount of time that he spent when he came out to give me an estimate. He took the time to tell me about all of the different trees and shrubs that we had and was good about making some suggestions. We had just purchased our new home a few weeks before he came out, so I am grateful for the information he gave me. In addition, I e-mailed him on Saturday evening (3/20/10) to let him know that it looked like some of the trees could stand to have some more mulch put around them. He promptly responded!! He came out two days later (3/22/10) and added some additional mulch around nine of our trees at no cost to us.

I believe he may have come to my house 2 times in Sept and Oct and once in Nov and Dec. He did spend a good amount of time cleaning up my back yard that flooded from storms and has not been able to service back again due to a constant water problem. However, I asked him to please prune some very overly grown bushes months ago and they were never done. My front yard was so full of leaves and I e-mailed him about getting them up and got an unpleasent response. Since the largest yard area is in my back, I asked for a weekly fee for services done. His breakdown was absolutely outragious. I am going to search Angie's List and hope to find a more reasonable and reliable service.
Description of Work: I hired K&J Lawncare to receive full service for our yard. His monthly fee included mowing, edging, pruning, mulching once, seeding once, fall leaf pickup 4 times, fertilizing in summer for $324.00.

Response from K&J Lawn and Garden Service LLC
This customer had backyard water issues (soggy yard) since late August 2009. K&J has been unfairly reported on by this customer. We were a mid-season replacement for this customer because she was not satisfied with her previous provider. It should be noted that we had a signed written contract for service and also that she cancelled the contract without the required 30 day notice and was never charged more than the contracted amount. There is no justification for the grades she has given my company. Her contract called for the following services: Mowing/Edging 32 times per year, Pruning 4 times per year, Mulch Installation (7 cy brown) 1 time per year, Weeding/Spraying as needed, Fall/Spring Fertilizing, Core Aeration and Over Seeding 1 time per year, Fall Leaf Collection 4 times per year. Here is a breakdown of all services provided as contracted: - Provided weekly lawn service in August/September and bi-weekly in October/November. - Provided 2 prunings. - Fall aeration and fertilizing was completed. - Provided 4 leaf collections, one being a 6 man-hour storm debris clean-up. Since the storm debris clean-up was not a contracted item, it would have been $270, but since we had not been able to provide full lawn care to the back yard due to the excessive water in the yard (an act of nature), I thought it was a fair replacement. She did request hedge pruning on November 1, 2009 and we had it scheduled for the week of November 9, 2009 but due to a seviere Nor-easter storm, we were not able to accomplish the prunning. The bush/hedge pruning the customer wanted was planned for this summer and she was notified of such. It was delayed because of fall storms and based on recommended prunning cycle from the Virginia Coopertive Extension. The bushes are hollies and the recommended pruning time is June/July (as noted above, we started in August). Additionally, she never e-mailed me about front yard leaves needing to get up. I did however receive a very nice e-mail from her when we did our last leave collection right before Christmas. Here is the body of the e-mail I received from her on December 18, 2009: “Thank you so much for the big cleanup of leaves. I know there are some left to fall but the yard was looking pretty shabby. This next nor'easter should be yet another setback for the backyard”

From the initial call to the end of the job Kregg and company was great to work with. Due to work constraints I was able to work with Kregg through email. I found this to be a great way to get landscaping done in the yard without having the ability to always be on-site. The yard was cleaned of debris from mulch and topsoil that had to be spread in garden beds. I would recommend this company to anyone! Great work and communication from the company!

It was fine. I cannot speak for how good the price was because I only got the quote from them. The mulch quality and the guy was fine. He was very professional and easy to deal with. He was very responsive to our needs, came when he said he would, and did not take long to complete the project. He spent time actually talking about other options for the front yard after we finished and even gave me some advice about how to care for my plants in the future!

Kregg came in and did all of the curb appeal and replaced all of my box hedges, which were dead. He knew exactly what was happening in my yard. He replaced them with beautiful plants that gave good coverage. He did a beautiful job of mulching. They cleaned the yard beautifully. In the back yard where there was bad soil and a place where 3 dogs play, mulched the area and it looks beautiful and very natural. The trimming is amazing and the price could not be beat.

The work was very satisfactory, except that he is limited to trimming trees 20 feet in height or lower due to a lack of equipment and personnel outside those limits. There were some higher limbs on one tree that I would have liked to get trimmed. Kregg is very personable and tells you up front what he can do, so that is to his credit.

Response from K&J Lawn and Garden Service LLC
This customer needed a tree service company but did not choose to contract one. K&J is a lawn care and landscaping company and we do low level tree pruning (normally less than 20 feet off the ground). The customer was told this during the estimate and that we recommended contracting a tree service company. Obviously, the customer chose K&J. The grade of "B" we received in "Punctuality" was due to arriving at the jobsite 5 minutes late...sometimes it is challenge to find a parking spot for a F250 w/ trailer in the older neighborhoods of Norfolk VA. Note: payment for this job was due within 10 days but took over 2 weeks to arrive.

Kregg originally did some tree pruning for me, which I was very happy with. He then sent me a proposal for re-landscaping around the three sides of the house. I thought the plan was good, and I thought the price was right. We made a few adjustments (I wanted a landing for grilling instead of another plant bed behind the deck wall), but overall his ideas were very much in line with what I had envisioned for our landscaping. So we agreed on a schedule and he showed up as planned to begin the work (actually, he started earlier, which I liked). He was consistently on time, reliable, and neat. He did a great job, finished on schedule (over Thanksgiving), and was very patient when it came to making minor adjustments on the placement of the slate. We had one minor miscommunication about final price of adjustment to slate, which was just as much my fault as his, and which is partially due to the fact that Kregg is still learning how to estimate material costs. But we resolved it.
Description of Work: Kregg landscaped the front, side, and back of my house. He took out the ugly front shrubs and planted new greenery, and he created rock borders around plants, shrubs, and trees, and he mulched. He put down a slate landing for my recycling canisters, and installed wood trellis around the canisters to conceal them from view from street. He planted magnolia and mondo grass along the side of the house in three semi-circular garden beds with rock borders. He put down a slate garden pathway that extends from the front of the house around the side and to the back stairway leading to the deck. He installed a slate patio in the backyard for the table and chairs to set upon. He installed a slate landing for our gas grill to the rear of the deck. He also replanted some greenery in the backyard, to make it more attractive. He mulched around the a/c units and laid a rock border.

I heard about Kregg through friends in the neighborhood who hired him to do some landscaping and gave me his card. Throughout the entire process, he was professional and courteous. He got the job done quickly, efficiently, and carefully. He put a great deal of time and thought into the job and considered aesthetics. He didn't just "cut away" at the trees. And he cleaned everything up and disposed of all branches and leaves. And what he charged was very reasonable. Now he is going to draw up a plan for some extended landscaping around the house.
Description of Work: Kregg pruned a very large tree in my front yard and a smaller one near the front door. He also cut back some pine trees growing along the side of the house.
