Disappointing interaction with a well-reviewed company. The appointment time was set for 12:00pm. I arrived at 11:55 and waited until 12:30 for someone to meet me. When I called to inquire, the person explained that there was a miscommunication between the scheduler and the employee. "No big deal since miscommunications happen," I thought. I was then transferred to someone who was able to advise me about what I needed for my lawn. That person also told me that the company had tried to call me earlier, during the originally scheduled appointment. He said that my phone was not receiving phone calls, which was not the case. Additionally, I was promised an emailed quote for seeding and aeration, which never came. Update, 10/3/2014 Cut Above The Curb called first thing after reading this review and made right on the issues stated above. They've been communicative and eager. Decision still pending on our end, but wanted to update the review to reflect that the company has gone out of its way to make right.

Mr. [Removed member name], I was surprised to see this as where we left off was you and I having a 20 minute conversation about your lawn maintenance and landscaping needs. Two proposals were sent to you within 30 minutes after the close of our discussion. In reference to the misunderstanding I did stop by your property on the day requested, unfortunately I did not know you would be present and we were to meet (as a lot of our appointments the client is NOT on site) I did apologize and to my understanding you were okay with it as the most important part was an assessment (stressed by you Sir). We did also try to call you more than 5 times and sent an email to you once our Admin. and myself realized that you were on site, and that you and I were to meet in person upon my return to our office. We do know what steps we took in house Sir, and it is no benefit to us to leave you dissatisfied with our company. Yes we did make a mistake with notes and we do apologize but otherwise we tried to do what we could to provide you with what you requested Sir. We do wish the outcome was different and wish you the best with all of your future endeavors. Thank you AND STAY BLESSED!! Robert L. DePonceau Owner 757-410-0892

The owner came out ahead of time to see all of the various tasks I had to do at my property. He estimated 2 areas that he thought a crew of 4 working for 4 hours could do with "doubling" the Angie's list special for a total of 16 man hours. The crew arrived on the day arranged, a few hours later than arranged, but they did call to let me know. There were 3 team members, so they extended the time to make it the same "man hours". I spent about half of the time working and "directing" work along with them. During the time I had inside tasks to do they continued working hard. They were missing some work items to tackle the brambles (thick leather gloves, so I loaned them mine, and a maddox.) They did not complain, I just noted they could work a lot easier if equipped. (The owner told me later they could have picked them up at the business prior, but would have been better if they were prepared.) 2/3 of the guys were incredibly hard workers and together I can say that the work time was very productive. They were also polite and efficient. They "stopped the clock" when taking a lunch break, and did work the total of 5.3 hours. The business owner came out at the end of the work time to check on everything. I would certainly hire this team again, and am likely to have them back for more major yard work tasks, although the cost does make one consider what you can do yourself.
Description of Work: Cleared out brush, weed, brambles from 2 areas of property, and hauled to "curb".

This is my first year with Robert and his team and I have been very impressed with the service. I use them only for pruning- our yard has some tall shrubs that I grew weary of pruning and I handed the job over to A Cut Above the Curb earlier this year . Each month the team comes out and does a very professional job. Truth be told, they do a far superior job of pruning than I ever did. Unlike some of the other companies in town, Robert's employees are refreshingly respectful while in our yard. The price is not the cheapest in town but it is a fair price and the quality of work is top notch. Highly recommend.

The owner came by and walked through and listen to my request. On the morning three men arrived on time. We walked around and talked about what I needed. They worked very hard, there was alot of overgrowth in my backyard. The bushes were taking over. The men cut them back to where you could actually see the mother plant as they called it. It looks so much better. Thank you again.

Robert was kind to fit us in during a busy schedule. He updated his proposal 3 times to meet our quickly changing needs. He agreed to come perform work on a Sunday to facilitate a deadline we had for a deck install crew that would be showing up in the next 1.5 weeks. His crew was polite and worked hard during the day on some tough brush, tree, and grass removal. We are very pleased with the brush removal. The crew has to come back one more time this week to till up one spot where our deck will be installed. They will be out here again next month for phase 2 of our project.
Description of Work: Phase one of a two part project. Removed overgrowth near the lakefront on our property, removed a concrete slab, cleared grass to prep for the install of a 16x20 deck. Phase two is scheduled for next month with landscaping, planting, bed design, and tree transplant.

I was initially contacted by Michelle, their admin person, right away. I described what I wanted done and that I was hoping to have it done quickly because I was concerned the leaves were causing the wooden patio to rot. This was July 24th. She said that since it was mainly leaf removal and pulling out plants and weeds in flower beds, that she would have a regular maintenance crew stop by my place the following week and do it during their regularly scheduled rounds. Then she called me back to let me know that she thought I wouldn't get the full 8 hours and service, so she was cancelling that and having the actual Angies List crew they have scheduled instead. She indicated that she had a bunch of openings. I turned down a few due to my work schedule then she finally came across a slot that I said worked for me. She said she could make that work. I put it in my work calendar and took a few hours off to be there for it. When no one showed up, I called in to see what happened. She informed me that I didn't have an appointment for that day. I said that I had entered it into my calendar for that slot and she said no, I must have made a mistake. I said okay, I took off from work and waited, but please correct me and let me know when my actual appointment is. She went through the schedule and told me that there were no appointments scheduled for me. I told her that it made no sense that I would call for an appointment and then hang up without one. She said that she remembered talking to me on the phone but it must have been my mistake. At no point did she acknowledge that it makes no sense as she described the situation, or make an attempt offer me some type of compensation or apology. I told her I was no longer interested in trying to schedule this work. Terrible/ rude customer service. At this point I just want a refund and to not have to ever deal with this company again. --------------------------------------------- Response to "Provider Response" --------------------------------------------- When Michelle called to let me know that you were able to create an appointment after deciding not to use the maintenance crew, I immediately indicated that it conflicted with my work schedule. That's when she indicated that she had a few other openings from cancellations. When we settled on a date (which is what you do when you call for an actual appointment- YOU SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT, you don't hang up without one, even if it's 3 weeks later), I placed it on my work calendar and that phone call ended. I took the time off from work and waited for the crew, no one showed. This is when I called the company again asking what happened, if perhaps they were just running late. I "hung up" (told her I wasn't interested in scheduling another appointment with her because that was obviously a waste of my time, then hung up) on Michelle after she insisted over and over and over again that she made no mistake but I also had no actual appointment at all- not that day or any day. I never heard from her or anyone at your company after this so do not indicate that I didn't return calls after. I'm willing to provide my phone records to prove this. I fairly stated in my original review that you initially contacted me quickly and were trying to get it scheduled properly and as soon as possible. The "disrespect" to your admin and grade of F was in response to her total lack of customer service. Please refund this money or I will file the complaint with Angie's List.
Description of Work: I purchased the $250 for 8 hours of landscaping or yard work. The intention was to have them come out to my new home and weed the flower beds and remove the piles and piles of leaves from previous owners. No work was completed.

Mrs. [removed member name], I personally feel this review is unfair as we were left with you yelling at our Administrative Assistant, hanging up on her and not returning our phone calls. Upon purchase you were contacted immediately and offered dates (as you stated) that did not work for you. We were already booking 4 to 6 weeks out, so once you were added to the schedule sooner (that I helped create) you were given a date that seemed to work for all of us. You then called on a date (a few days prior) that you were NOT scheduled upset and extremely rude to our Admin. We went back and forth trying to reach out to you to no avail. As far as the correspondence, it didn't quite go as stated in your review. It was a little more like this; A Cut Above The Curb 7/25/2014 Hello (name removed for identity protection) Thank you for selecting A Cut Above The Curb to help you with your landscaping and lawn maintenance needs! Unfortunately, the dates you have suggested for service are already filled. We are currently scheduling for the week of August 25th. I hope that is ok. If not, we can contact you if we have any cancellations. As cancellations and rescheduling of appointments occurs frequently, we do our best to promptly fill them according to client suggested service dates. To better assist you, I will need to know the services you’re interested in having performed? Again we appreciate your time and look forward to working with you!! Best Regards, Michelle Administrative Assistant A Cut Above The Curb - www.ACutAboveTheCurb.com Phone: 757.410.0892 A Cut Above The Curb 7/31/2014 Hello (name removed for identity protection) , Our landscaping division that handles our Angie's List requests has a few openings next week. This works perfect so we don't have to squeeze you into our lawn maintenance route and you'll still be given the quality service that all other Angie's List customers have received. I'll call you tomorrow to schedule your service. I look forward to speaking with you! Best Regards, Michelle Administrative Assistant A Cut Above The Curb - www.ACutAboveTheCurb.com Phone: 757.410.0892 (name removed for identity protection) 7/31/2014 Great. Thanks!! We then got you on the schedule sooner than what we initially stated (3 weeks roughly) and only 7 days after your purchase. Now here comes the issue of misunderstanding. We did everything we could on our end; we were bookin 4 to 6 weeks out, the dates for you didn’t work, we had cancellations and FIT YOU IN TO AN ALREADY ESTABLISHED SCHEDULE. We were fitting you in as stated so there were only slots available on certain days. Scheduling mistakes do and can happen on either end but this is a situation we are positive that it wasn’t through our office. An F grade is pretty harsh being that we did everything we could and tried working past you disrespecting our Admin. I had hoped the outcome would be different and wish you the best. Thank you for your initial purchase and inquiry and we hope all future endeavors go the way you need them to. Respectfully, Robert L. DePonceau

Estimate for front clearly stated 6 hours labor plus 2 more if mulching materials were supplied. I supplied mulch and weed block and had informed Robert ahead of time of no need for any new edging. Existing was totally intact and as new, so no edging installation was necessary. Despite a quick response and initial visit it took 15 days to get an estimate and 51 days wait for work to be done which did contribute to weed growth and trimming needs in the overgrown beds. 3 workers started work at 9:15., were off property approximately 45 mins. to 1 hr., and completed work at 3PM. They were polite, detailed in final cleanup and even helped me unload mulch from my truck. This however added up to 17 hours of man labor, front yard only, which of course ate up both of the 8 hr. pre-paids I had purchased and was supposed to be a $1000.00 value. I was very upset as I could not reconcile my mind to the prescribed work in a fairly small contained area taking 17 man hours to complete. Is almost $30 per hr. labor the current ongoing rate for weed pulling, trimming and mulching? And, original estimate was for 8 hours. The work took exactly DOUBLE the estimated time thus double costs. As a Sr. citizen living on SS and unable to perform this type of work myself, every coupon offer, discount, special etc. are precious to me. After this incident, I felt very wronged and taken advantage of. I communicated back and forth several times (email because I like the written record) with Robert about this. Each time he had a reason that *I* misinterpreted the proposal or that it was more work than he thought or things were or were not included although he did offer to move the stone, lay the weed block that was MISSED at no charge the next time they came to work. Frustrated by the back and forth, and now after no offer of refund or other resolution, I cancelled the end of month scheduled back yard work, told Robert I will not be buying any additional deals in order to get that work performed and cut ties. Don't want to damage anyone's business, good intentions or hard work with complaining but do hope others are smarter than I was in understanding A Cut Above the Curb's estimates. Cut and paste from actual estimate: "For all work initially discussed with out materials and haul off would be around 32 man hours. This would include; Front flower beds, side stone walkway, all pruning, establishment of tree rings, pruning of all shrubs and trees. Application of dirt for beds and low spots. Materials would be; 4 yards of mulch, 5 yards of topsoil, 4 pieces of aluminum edging and weed fabric. You can purchase materials or we can provide them for you. Front flower bed; prune, weed, remove and transfer stone 6 hours Install two yards of mulch $140.00 (material and labor) or you can use as final 2 hours of first initial coupon ( materials not included) 4 pieces of metal edging $320.00 (material and labor)."
Description of Work: Front yard portion of a front / back yard Estimate of 32 hours of work total. Front - Move a 2 inch layer of stone (137 Sq. Ft.) from bedding area across driveway and relay onto a 5x10 area in front of a gate. Remove top layer of grass in same 5x10 area, install weed block paper and top with the stones. Weed, prune, lay weed block and mulch same 137 sq. ft. landscaping area after stone removal. Weed and mulch 1 5' circular area around a tree.

Mrs. [removed member name], this review was very difficult for us as we tried to work with you through different phases of your landscaping needs. After consulting with you on site and going back and forth with an "overall plan" and some changes I encouraged you to purchase an additional 8 man hour special to complete the first phase, in which you did. No where in this review does it state that our team was not working as hard as they could throughout their visit to your property. You were happy with everything except the fact that it was not possible to complete your requested work (and additional work) in a 16 hour time frame. I must have asked for you to call at least 3 times through email and tried calling you another 3 to discuss the outcome of the situation described in this review, prior to you leaving it. There was work that was completed that was NOT included in our original estimate. It is no benefit to us to take advantage of ANYBODY no matter their position in life. I would have and am still willing to discuss this with you and do whatever we can within means to satisfy you as a client. You questioned the going rate for the services you requested yet purchased the special at that hourly rate for us to perform the work. We didn't offer any discount because the work you requested was completed in the two Big Deal coupons you purchased. Again you didn't state the workmanship was poor just the fact that more work could not be completed in this time. You were on site all day so you saw first hand what went into each portion and area of your phase one project. Please feel free to call me to discuss this matter and let us know what we can do to try to leave you with a different position on your feelings with our company. I value you as a client and would love to either speak with you over the phone or in person. I do wish the outcome was different and hope to get an opportunity to speak with you again. I bought an AngiesList 16 man-hours of labor deal. Robert and I met on two occasions to discuss the scope of the front-and-back yard project, and he convinced me that 16 was insufficient. He predicted it could be up to 40 man-hours. I agreed. The crew arrived as scheduled. They began on the front. They did a thorough job of clearing the beds and trimming, although this was when the first big problem arose. They butchered my only fruit-bearing tree. It was heart-breaking to walk out to see the full year?s yield of figs with all of the fruit nearly ripened lying chopped up and wasted in the driveway. I brought this to Robert?s attention. He responded that I had agreed to trust his judgement and this was his decision. I informed him I strongly disagreed with the action. As the hours mounted, the front yard was otherwise looking good. The second big problem became apparent at this point. I had noticed that the workers had spent large portions of time using a rake. It was not so much raking anyTHING, but just raking. I told them to move to the back, as the front had seemed completed more than an hour before. Several times, they told me that the clock had stopped because they were on a break. Despite this, the hours charged did wind up accruing as the rakes swayed to and fro. Robert then informed me that we were reaching the 30-hour mark and asked how to proceed. I reminded him about the 40-hour estimate. He replied that he had told me ?40 hours in addition to the 16,? to which I replied that he most certainly did not. Nearly at the 30 man-hour mark, they had barely touched the back yard and left for the day. Robert sent me an email written estimate for another 32 hours of work plus a few other items I previously requested to not have. No, I would not permit them to return. The partially disabled man writing this review and a teen-aged neighbor completed the remaining weeding, clearing and trimming job in about 4 hours. If you are going to hire this company, I advise that you agree on a price for the full job and not on a price by the hour.

[Name removed], I was surprised to see this review as you were completely happy with the initial results and we were scheduled to do a second phase until I refused to allow you to nickel and dime my price. From inception you wanted a $2,500.00 plus job done for $499.00. Upon our initial consultation you tried to convince me that all of your pruning, weed detail, leaf clean up, topsoil installation and mulching could be done in 16 man hours. When I asked if that was feasible you laughed and commented as it was absolutely impossible to not have it completed in that amount of time. Upon arrival on our second consultation on sight, I realized it was FAR FROM FEASIBLE, your expectations were unrealistic and quoted you upwards to 40 hours worth of labor TO DO IT PROPERLY. You had questioned why we would need to weed or clean out leaves before installing fresh mulch and insisted that you and your girlfriend could install 15 yards of mulch in 6 hours. You then agreed to move forward with the project after some back and forth questioning about why we would have to do certain things prior to other parts of the requested install and my continued refusal of your requests of cutting corners as we were not the company to leave our name on a horrible looking landscape enhancement over haul. When on sight the first day we discussed the Fig tree which was being choked out and tied into the Crepe Myrtle and honey suckle in one area that was extremely congested. We moved forward with thinning, training and cutting back of ALL of your shrubs and bushes to our discretion as you had granted us to previously. You and I NEVER had a conversation about your disappointment with the final results of that tree or any other on your property. I approached you at the 24 hour mark to inform you that the work we were doing (which you, your girlfriend and neighbors had been complimenting all day) was about to exceed where we needed to be to complete the entire project (second phase as well) in the quoted time frame you then asked why? I stated that the work we were doing (and additional work requested by you throughout the day and requested on the follow up visit) was more time consuming and was going to bring us over the 40 hour mark. You proceeded to urge us to cut corners and move to the back yard to do all of the heavy pruning and labor intense work which we then did. We completed all of your heavy tree trimming and shrub trimming to get the bulk of the work completed as you requested. I only approached you out of courtesy Sir, to give you the option to select work and prioritize as you continued to try to cut corners throughout our visit on your property. All day long you were on site and outside with myself and my team. There is ABSOLUTELY no point in time throughout the day that we billed any man hours for any breaks. There was also no team members moving rakes on site without purpose Sir. We left your property at 29 man hours with 11 man hours still remaining on your 40 man hour quote. The project still had a significant amount of pruning, weeding, additional metal edging, dirt and mulch to install ABOVE AND BEYOND what we initially agreed upon. You were happy when we left, commented on how great it looked and you were eager to see the final result. You asked me to provide the final proposal to complete all initial and add on work. After I provided the proposal per your request, you counter offered my number, asking that I deduct 25% off of the already competitive price. When I declined you opted out of the second day of service that was already scheduled. Now as far as "the partially disabled man and teen aged neighbor" completing the project in 4 hours, I don't think that is humanly possible. Our quote for 32 additional man hours (over the 29) was to install and spread 18 cubic yards of mulch, 4 cubic yards of topsoil, install metal edging along your entire front curb line, weed all of your back beds, re define all of your beds, clean out all debris, leaves and continue to complete all of your pruning. That would break down to 4 team members for one day Sir. Even with all of your grading points you did not credit us where we did what we were expected to do as a reputable company based on your written review. Everything was an A or B (except the price) and you chose to give us a D overall. It's not that the workmanship was poor it was that I would not allow you to beat me down on my pricing nor leave my name on poorly completed job. We have since done business with three of your neighbors, and have several other clients in your neighborhood Sir. I feel confident to say we must be doing something right. In final thought, I have seen the finished project and spreading mulch evenly through out beds without footprints and clumps is and will probably always be more time consuming than just dumping it in piles Sir. Metal edging should be installed straight with no bows or imperfections and also have a symmetric spacing of gap along the entire stick. Topsoil should be spread evenly before the mulch is installed not after. Beds need to be sprayed and weeded properly BEFORE your mulch is installed or you will have weed filled beds within weeks. I do wish the outcome was different, we value every client and property equally. We also STRIVE for perfection and to be the BEST landscape and lawn maintenance company PERIOD. For what it is worth Sir we appreciate your business and the opportunity to assist in the transformation of your landscape. Respectfully Robert L. DePonceau Owner

lonce the date was set for the work, the workers arrived promptly, were courteous and efficient, and finished within the allotted time. The biggest problem was getting in touch with the company, having made the purchase several months before I wanted the work done. After the purchase, initially the owner called to set up a time, but after a few months getting any response was difficult. I finally called and talked to a young lady in the office, a new employee, suggesting perhaps a call to Angie's list was in order. The owner called the next day and scheduled the work. The work itself was just fine.
Description of Work: cleared bed in front of house of overgrowth and trimmed things up there.

Naturally we had a rain delay but the three fellows who came out on the rescheduled date were very polite, hard-working individuals who asked several times what I needed done and checked to be sure they had done as requested. I have used this company in the past and won't hesitate to use it again.
Description of Work: cleaned out/weeded 2 flower bed(that were in awful shape!), spread mulch, dug a few holes for my planting

Due to the popularity of the coupon, it was tough to get a date right away. I have used this company on two prior times, and I find them to be congenial and hard working. I will definitely use them again.

Had a bit of a time setting up the appt. but when it was set up the guys did a great professional job. They dug up 8 plants, weedwacked and some edging. Edging could have been a bit better - he indicated that next time they would bring a machine.

The crew showed up on time, worked diligently to remove the vines, trim trees and shrubs. They allowed light and access to the shrubs and trees that were being choked out. They were very precise about when they worked and when they took breaks. It was very clear that we got our moneys worth. Robert checked to make sure that i was satisfied and that the work was going as planned. I plan to have them out periodically to maintain the area. I would highly recommend Robert and his crew at A Cut Above the Curb.
Description of Work: The crew came and removed a huge thicket of over grown vines, trimmed trees and shrubs. The area had been unmanaged for years and was completely taken over by invasive vines.

Robert the owner, worked quickly to stop by my house to establish my mulch needs and yard work. He knew I was in a time crunch to spruce up my garden and accommodated us by squeezing us in his schedule! Thank you a Robert, for sending me the hardest working guys that were meticulous in prepping the garden beds and spreading the mulch evenly for a crisp, clean look! They were also fantastic in cleanup! Robert and his team are friendly and professional every step of the way! Highly recommend! AAA+++

Unfortunately, the provider wasn't able to come out for weeks. We were really hoping for faster service.
