Description of Work: They were to scrape and paint the outside of the house (one coat) and shim one side of the house where the paint (in the past) very quickly started to peel. | |Terry Beams was very responsive and polite. He and his crew always showed up when they said they were going to. The crew cleaned up each day, were careful about plantings, and, at the end of the job, Terry brought out a shop vac to remove the paint flakes. | |As I understand from what Terry told me, the estimate for the job under-estimated the amount of time needed for scraping and preparation. Re: the one coat, we disagreed on whether the paint was coating well or if the painters were not applying it properly. Regardless, I can see a number of places where no paint was applied at all. | |We had miscommunication about painting my metal storm doors. My partner was involved in providing the instruction, so I don't know exactly what was said and cannot fault Beam's Painting for proceeding with priming those doors. However, they primed the hardware (latches, handles, hinges)! The primer was difficult to cover, and it was excruciating, especially, to try to get the hardware covered. I cannot understand why someone would paint the latch that extends/retracts to keep the door shut or allow it to open. | |They took all of my shutters to their shop to repair and paint., however they did not reattach all of the shutters. | |We ended up negotiating my payment of an extra ~$1750 for the crew to add a second coat of paint on the upper levels and for me to add the second coat on the ground levels and to paint the storm doors that they primed. There were some areas that had no new paint at all and that I could not reach, and so they still have the color of the old paint job. There were other areas (e.g., the very bottom board on the front porch siding) where they did not apply the first coat but I was able to paint. | |It was disappointing that, as professionals, the finished product demonstrated that they tired of this job and rushed through the end. I was sorry that it took a couple of months for me to discover the odds and ends that they did not do right. | |I have received several emails requesting my feedback on their work. I have hesitated to provide an assessment because I truly liked the people who were here. This weekend my partner was on the second story changing some trim color and found another stretch that wasn't painted. It underscored for me that it is important to have the feedback to help others make a decision. I relied on photos and comments on the contractor's website, which were positive. A Google search for reviews didn't turn up anything to raise questions. | |The final product isn't obviously lacking to a visitor who isn't focused on how the house is painted. To the homeowner who wants a thorough, conscientious, professional painting service, I can say only that I would not contract for their services again. | |Re: the shims to help with the humidity and peeling paint - the work looks tidy. I have not gone through two summers (or even one) to see if it makes a positive difference in the life of the paint. I am hopeful it will.

Removal of the doors went without incident using lead-safe practices. Installation of the french doors was complicated by the size of the doors relative to the door opening, which required the contractor to spend extra time and materials building it to fit. This was likely caused by Lowe's having only two sizes for custom order, the larger size being too big for the rough opening. The standard size door was installed easily with the contractor only having to cut a trim piece to fit. We noticed that the locking mechanism at the top and bottom of the doors and weather stripping for the french doors was not installed properly causing light to shine through the bottom and top of the doors. Also, for the standard size door, the contractor did not shim or use expanding foam (Great Stuff) to fill in the gaps around the door. We were able to fix these issue ourselves with little effort but believe that some attention to detail was needed to ensure a quality finished installation. The contractor was very responsive and willing to work with us on any concerns that we had.
