The job went very well. This was the second very positive experience that we have had with his company. The crew did everything that we requested, very pleasantly and efficiently. Also, they made sensible additional suggestions that we accepted. The crew did an excellent job of managing the collection and disposal of the limbs and branches that were removed. Space was limited and tight because the 40-foot tree was very close to two houses. But, nothing was damaged, even though some of the limbs were large. In April of 2010, the same company did similar work on the same tree and we gave them an enthusiastic, positive review then too. This year, we chose to pay for the work at an hourly rate. That turned out to be the best decision for this interactive job.
Description of Work: The crew removed several 2-4 inch limbs in a Willow Oak that is near our house, and removed several dead limbs and branches. All of these were about 15-20 feet off the ground. As the crew worked, we chose the limbs and branches to remove.

Chris (the arborist) and crew arrived in the afternoon, as planned. The original date was rescheduled, but NVTE called to let me know ahead of time. I have used NVTE twice in the last 20 years to cut down a few dead/dying trees on the woodland edge of my property, but this was the first time I had them do a pruning job. I was a bit concerned because this tree is in the front yard, and I have grown it from a little sapling to a nice big shade tree. So I didn't want a bad hatchet job. Cesar (the guy who climbed the tree and did most of the trimming) was an aerial artist, and even more important, did a really nice selective trim. The whole job took at least an hour or so. The crown is thinner and Chris told me it will take a little getting used to, which is true. But as I wanted, the tree still has its basic overall shape and doesn't look chopped. So I am waiting for Spring and leaf-out to see the final results. Stay tuned for a later update.
Description of Work: Pruned red maple in front yard to remove low hanging branches, and to thin the crown (top). This tree is about 50 feet tall and about the same width in canopy (branch) spread.

I have used Northern Virginia Tree Experts for years. They are very professional and can tell you all about taking care of your trees. I have a wooded back yard, so this is important to me. The workmen were very professional and worked safely and quickly. They cleaned up afterwards. There was a picnic table that they forgot to move back into place, but the Arborist (Chris) called me the next day to ask how it went. When I mentioned the picnic table he said he would send someone by to move it., and he did that same day. Very nice, I wasn't expecting that. I got a discount for having the work done in the winter time, so I was able to get both trees taken down for less that it would have cost to take down the one big tree last summer.
Description of Work: Removed one large oak tree that was hanging over the bedroom roof of my house, and also one small cherry tree that was nearby. Cut down tree without damaging nearby roof, chipped up branches and removed logs. Left stumps in ground.

I interviewed and received quotes from four companies. Northern Virginia Tree Experts was the lowest bid by more than $100 which, initially, gave me pause as I wondered why they were so much lower than all the others, but as I had recently done quite a bit of work on the house, I decided to go with the lowest bid. Ironically, of the four companies I contacted, these guys were the only ones I never actually met. Someone stopped by at some point and left a quote on my door. After I later accepted the quote and contracted with them to actually do the job, I expected to get a call to schedule the work. One morning the following week, as I pulled out of the drive, I noticed that the tree had been trimmed and the arborvitae was noticeably shorter as well as having been tied. I'm still not sure exactly what date or time they came by, hence my lack of rating on punctuality, but I was certainly pleased with the work they did - and they obviously did the job within a week - less actually - of accepting their proposal. I did speak with Ellen on several occasions when contacting the office and she was very courteous and professional, so my experience overall was very positive and I can certainly recommend their work.

Not good. I dont need to give my money to companies that dont want the business.
Description of Work: The estimator didnt want the business and was pretty rude and dismissive about doing it. It seems that they company is making plenty of money and they dont need much new business. I asked them to price cutting down 3 dead oak trees and cutting them up and the only thing he would even consider is to cut them and let them drop and lay where they fall... no cut up, no chipping, no nothing...said he didnt need the work that bad (the trees are at a flat piece of ground below my yard...would be a pain to haul them out, but he could at least have cut them up... basically he offered to drop the trees and leave...and it was a favor! No thanks..

hire them, work the wait to get them.
Description of Work: needed a lot a tree work. some 10 Leylands , cherry tree, and pin oak. had quite a few estimates, but they left me feeling like i was not getting the best contractor. so i finally joined angies list. this was a very good move. the estimator, john, came out, he is a walking talking computer, knows trees inside and out. little personality. the work crew arrived mid morning. they were excellent. ryan and his crew shaped my trees like art work. cleaned up very well, and did everything i asked of them. very pleased with the price and the work crew. credit card payment was done with a phone call. i would use this company again and would recommend to my neighbors. good company.

I was told I didn't need to be there, but I was. They were done in about an hour and did and excellent job with cleanup.
Description of Work: I have a large tree in my tiny front yard that the previous homeowners had let overgrow the roof. I had this company come in trim it back a foot or so away from the front of the building. What was impressive to me was their ability to maneuver that huge lift into our townhouse community.

I had two fairly large willow trees to be removed from my back yard. Their estimate was the lowest so they got the job. Three men showed up to do it and they obviously knew exactly what they were doing. They broke one small branch off an adjoining maple tree but not bad considering how large the trees were and how small the yard is in comparison.

The work was completed, although we had to tell the crew to remove a broken limb they had missed. The crew topped the wrong trees, however, and we did not catch it until they had left. We had used this company three times in 2009. Twice we were delighted, but the last time less so as it did not look as though the tree to be pruned had actually had any work done. The company has different crews, and it is best to follow their work carefully to ensure the job is done.

Overall it was excellent. It was a very good job from estimate through to clean up at the end. The estimator was very knowledgeable and efficient, and his specs for the job were excellent. The estimator was able to schedule the work before he left. The company was able to do the work the same week. A crew came on the scheduled day at about 8 a.m. Their truck had a cherry picker, and it towed a limb chipper. The crew leader was a very friendly, communicative guy. He and I worked through the details of all the work to be done. Then he assigned his crew to prune the pear in the way that I had requested. While that was under way, he climbed into the willow oak and, talking with me about each limb, took off the limbs that needed to be pruned. Meanwhile, the crew took dead limbs and vertical sprouts out of the pear tree and trimmed the spread of several branches to lighten the tree while retaining its basic shape (like giving the tree a regular hair cut). After the pruning, both trees looked good. When the pruning was done, the crew collected all the fallen branches and leaves and put them through the chipper into the back of the truck. Then they raked, swept, and used a power-blower to clean the work areas before they left.
Description of Work: They pruned a willow oak behind our house and an ornamental pear tree in front of the house. The crew leader climbed into the willow oak and cut designated limbs 20 - 30 feet above the ground while talking with me to confirm which limbs to cut. Independently, his crew pruned a pear tree to lighten and shape it after getting general directions from me.

We called for an estimate. They said call them back before 9 on another day to see what their schedule would be. Strange. Why wouldn't they say. we'll call you when our estimator is available. Anyway. John came and gave us an estimate 45% lower than two other firms. So we went with them. After accepting the bid, we had to call them to see when they might come by. Again. You would think they would be calling us. They came. They conquered. We were quite pleased with their professional hard work and their clean up of the branches cut. We would use them again, but they have a strange way of dealing with clients over the phone. We're still scratching our heads. We recommend this firm.

wonderful. I was very worried about the birch, it is such a beautiful tree, but i doubt it had ever been trimmed. it is still a beautiful tree after the very careful hair cut No VA Tree Experts gave it. Very punctual, high quality equipment, nice staff, pretty good clean up.

All of our dealings with Northern Virginia Tree experts have gone smoothly, with crews showing up and completing the work just as expected, even if we were not home.
Description of Work: We have used Northern Virginia Tree for our tree work for several years. Most recently they removed some larger limbs from our towering maple and pine trees and did some lighter trimming and pruning. We have occasionally gotten estimates from other services, Northern Virginia's prices were comprable to or lower than most. The crews are prompt and professional and John, who does the estimates, is an arborist, who will advise on the scope of work that can and should be done to keep the trees healthy and to keep costs down.

Received 3 quotes regarding tree work. NoVA Tree experts recommended taking mulberry down instead of pruning. We had not noticed the crack (!) so we decided to go with that route. As the rain and wind was making the crack wider, I did call them to schedule an early date (instead of a week's wait) as two large branches overhung our neighbor's house. They were able to come two days later. They arrived at 830am and took down the mulberry, down to nearly ground level (we remove stumps ourselves) and they also pruned our front maple, about 20%. Since the ground was wet, they placed boards on my grass so the cherry picker would not make large ruts in the grass with its tires. They cleaned up all the branches, etc. and frankly you could not tell they were there with the exception of some sawdust near the base of the trunk where the mulberry was.

I called NOVA tree service unsure if I needed a tree service or a landscaper for a tree root vs. sidewalk issue. I left a detailed message with Bryan and he called me the next day to let me know that I did need a landscaper rather than a tree service. I was very pleased that even though they knew they would not be getting my business for my problem they would take the time to return my call. In situations like that it seems like we usually get blown off. If I do need a tree service in the future I will definitely give NOVA tree service a call.
