Total job start to end was about three months, a bit longer than anticipated. This being our first major indoor project we were not too well versed to what was needed. After bid and selection process we met with Jodi at their office to review timeline and tasks needed by us, like counter and fixture selections, etc. We enountered a few snafu's in this and ended up having to make granite selections from outside sources more times than we would have liked, in the end adding cost to the project. We also had some miscommunications on tile selection and pricing. Near closing we met with Justin to negotiate the cost issues and these were resolved fairly. Note that in the contract 'allotment' amounts we found that these were more basic than our tastes so this added some cost also. Something to watch for with all contractors, not just Moss. As for the project, our project manager John was very responsive and was availabe almost always to answer questions and give updates up the point of vacation. Then we had some minor communication issues. All of the subs that Moss used were very good, courteous, and professional. There was never a problem to make changes along the way and when asked they offered sound advise. In the end we are extremely happy with the final outcome. As for the issues, it's not a question of "if" rather a question of "when" and Moss was very good at resolving these. An important consideration when selecting someone to do a job of this scope.

We take the feedback from our customers very seriously. We did get a proposal back to this customer which in speaking with her she did receive. Unfortunately, it was not within our normal turnaround time due to various circumstances. We strive to turn our proposals around in a timely manner and 99.9% of the time we hit the mark. We are very sorry we disappointed this customer and hope she will give us a try again in the future to experience our true quality performance.

Set up appointment for estimate and were given results and design in a few days. Set up date to begin demo and they met that date. Sub contractors and mangement of project very good. Some delay in delivery due to waiting for additional parts but they provided good communication.

He advised us against that. I was going to have a shed built. He said that it would take away from our house the pitch on the roof. He said we could do it but then he would not advise us for it. He was honest and upfront and he was on time. He didn't think it was a good idea and he told me.

They were responsive. The estimate was for about $42,000. They had lots of choices of materials or cabinetry. I only dealt with their estimator. She did well. It was really hard as we were dealing with each other during a snowstorm. I ended up choosing someone else even though I had heard lots of positive feedback about this company from others. There was nothing wrong with the company. I would recommend them to others.

If I had to rate them on their first crew they would have failed...but when my husband and I called them to come take a look at the 'finished product' they immediately, without any urging from us, told us that a second crew would be back to bring the job up to A+ work. And they did. Not only did they redo all the painting, they had one of their crews come over to move the furniture - and I had a hard time deciding where things would/should go. I never heard a complaint. And after everything was done, they sent in a cleaning crew. We've had company over who have never been in our basement and thought it was just terrific - and so do we. Our grandchildren visited the weekend it was finished...and they loved their play room. Our son, who the basement was first finished for, wanted to know why it wasn't so nice when he was using it! We would use Moss again...because they stand behind their work - they truly want their customers to be happy, because they know how important word of mouth really is.

We met one of the owners at a local home and garden show and were impressed with his professionalism and his ideas. Although we did not choose them to do our remodel, they were our second choice contractor. The final decision came down to minor details in design. We will contact them again about future work if we have a need.

I contacted 5 companies for estimates of this large project. Moss Building and Design was the only company that spent more than 5 minutes with me during the initial consultation. Jason Hampel listened to my ideas and needs, he responded with a written proposal that was itemized and made it possible for us to see exactly how our money was being spent and where we could save by doing some work ourselves. Workers showed up on time. If at any point there was a problem or concern, Jason was very quick to come out to the house and resolve any issue no matter how small. Jodi Jameson did a superb job contacting me each week with the schedule of work that would be done and how long it would take. We were very happy with the entire process and ecstatic with the end results. We have used Moss again (rebuilt our portico) and will continue to use Moss for future needs. We have also used the handyman services offered by Moss - we had toilets replaced and were very happy with his work.

We are repeat customers of Moss Building and Design and have been very pleased with the quality and service that we have received every time. Our first project was the biggest. In 2003, the renovation consisted of adding a second level to our home and adding a great room to the back of the house. The cost was around $235K and Moss worked around us to enable us to stay in the home that we loved without having to move. The next project in 2004 was taking the existing deck off and building a new, larger one for around $10K. Moss also designed and built a small portico in 2008 at our side door off the driveway for around $12K. In 2009, we hired Moss again to completely renovate our kitchen. This project cost around $60K, and is a real highlight in our home. We worked with a kitchen cabinet designer who also works directly with Moss to make the process flawless. We also added crown molding and recessed lighting to a couple of existing rooms in our home for a cost of around $4K. The latest, but probably not the last project that Moss handled was the renovation of our existing play room. This was also done in 2009 for around $9K. This room got a complete overhaul from removing a large closet/wall to adding a beautiful French door, recessed lights, and new paint. We even hired a handyman from them to install some shelves for us in our basement. As you can see, we are a repeat customer and highly recommend Moss Building and Design for any size project that you have. We feel that they are a very trustworthy and highly skilled family run company which can be pretty rare in this business. Personally, I?d rather use a company like this where the prices are extremely competitive and they are part of our community and raising their family, versus a big contracting company where the profits are collected and spent who knows where?.
Description of Work: Multiple jobs were completed: Added a second story and great room to our house, built a new deck, built a portico, complete renovation of our kitchen, added crown molding and recessed lights to multiple rooms, and then renovated our kids play room.

From the beginning, Jason Hampel and his team from Moss were exceptionally professional and knowledgable. I wanted my kitchen to be stylish and updated; I also needed it to be functional. I started with a magazine layout of a kitchen that was stylistically what I was looking for. Unfortunately, that was a $200,000 kitchen - quite out of our budget! With the team from Moss, I was able to get the look I wanted while maintaining our budget. Initially, Jason and his team came out to the house, talked to my husband and I about what we were really looking for. They took the time to really understand the desired results. He educated us in general terms about how long the renovation would take, areas where we would want to spend our money, where we could achieve the most bang for our buck, and areas where we could save some money. After that meeting, we received his estimate and decided to move forward. Picking out the cabinets and countertops with Jason's team was fun. I am not a fan of granite and prefer Corian, despite current trends. However, I wanted to avoid it looking dated. Moss?s team recommended Corian's Rain Cloud which has a similar look to the marble, but is more functional in the kitchen. When it came time to choosing the finish for the cabinet, Jason recommended spending money on the extra glaze, because it would complete the look. He was so right! However, as our budget was increasing, he was very pro-active about making suggestions to spend our money as wisely as possible. For example, he suggested keeping our existing pantry cabinet (our current pantry was large enough), because that one piece alone is quite expensive. Jason also suggested we save a few dollars by using our current garbage disposal which was only a few years old. With these suggestions, I was able to pick and choose what was most important to me, and maintain our budget. Jason's suggestions in the design of the kitchen included small personal details such as sink size, which cabinets should have pull-out drawers, and even the type of door on a lazy-susan that wouldn't pinch the fingers of my two boys. The undercounter lights that he suggested have proven crucial and the cubbyhole that they designed and built-in for my cookbooks is very stylish and useful. It's the small details that can make a kitchen easy or frustrating, and Jason and Moss were attentive to all of these things. This renovation with Moss was on-time; in fact they finished a week early! As far as budget, they were on the mark there too. There was one line-item where I went significantly over what we expected, which we approved. Before Moss placed the order, they called me with the total price, told me what the overage was compared to the budget, and gave me plenty of time to decide whether I wanted to move forward, or choose another option that was within our original budget. I really appreciated this attention to our budget and that I never got hit with "hidden" or unexpected costs. Overall the renovation was as painless as it could be and exceptionally successful in my mind. Moss's employees were courteous to me and friendly to my boys. Additionally, they were careful with their tools when the boys got too curious or close. I would highly recommend Moss Building and Design for any renovation, but a kitchen and flooring renovation in particular. They know what's important and they deliver for a reasonable price in a timely manner. You can't ask for more from your contractor!
Description of Work: Moss Building and Design completed a total renovation of our kitchen. The original kitchen was from 1983 and looked it. My husband and I do a lot of entertaining at home with friends and family, and the flow of the kitchen in conjunction with the rest of the main floor wasn't working. There was a lot of dead space in the previous lay-out that wasn't being utilized. With Moss's design team, we gutted the kitchen. All cabinets and countertops were removed and the soffits were removed so that we could have cabinets to the ceiling. Part of a wall and a set of doors in the kitchen were removed, to open up the space. We installed new hardware and a new sink and faucet. We had new flooring, new appliances, and a new island designed and installed. Moss also refinished our hardwood floors and installed recessed lighting in two other rooms on the main floor.

I have been very impressed with the Moss Team. They are really professional and have helped with various things around the house. They have given me guidence on how to space my projects and have done the work which I have contracted them within our budget and in a very timely manner. They were a little bit higher than the two guys and a truck typical contractor - but I learned it was a great value and completely worth it to us as they came on time and took care of the entire project. They always cleaned the areas they were working on before they left and have provided a great service.
Description of Work: Moss Building and Design has performed various services in my house over the last year. Most recently, they replaced the 2 big bay windows which had a lot of rotten wood. They wrapped the trim in aluminum and gave me a extended warranty on that product. They are also working with me on replacing my all my shutters in my house. They also performed various electrical services in the house. They are very profesional.

What was promised in terms of a project manager and schedule of actions with timeframes never happened. My wife met the person who was supposed to be our project manager for a brief visit and never saw him again. The list of actions and a timeframe for those actions never materialized. Essentially my wife had to act as the project manager, and, if she didn't work at home, the project would probably still be going on. Although some of the problems we experienced like not enough tile ordered or the wrong tile delivered can happen with any project it is interesting that those thing happened along with many others. Things like a hole gouged in the new granite countertop. The hole was professionally repaired and most people would not see it. However, it is disappointing because it is immediately in front of anyone sitting on the bar stool. Basically, it appears to me that their marketing department is working overtime and their project management team (assuming they actually have one) is woefully underperforming. The only disappointment we had in terms of the subcontractors they used was for the tiling. The president of the company raved about his tile guy. What we found was that we had an apprentice working on our project. Even that would have been fine if he had been better supervised. Typically, the tile-guy would show up with the apprentice and then leave. Again, the expectation had been set and the execution did not match that expectation. Part of that problem was with the repair of the drywall behind the countertop in preparation for the new subway tiles on that wall. To me it did not appear professionally finished and ready for the tile. Consequently it is uneven and the grouting appears inconsistent applied. Are we happy with our kitchen? We are happy with our choices of colors, appliances and countertop and most of the finished product. However, in retrospect we would have been better off hiring our own subcontractors and acting as the general contractor/project manager which my wife had to do anyway. I know that some projects can just "get away from you", but I would not use Moss Building and Design, nor would I recommend them. In fact our next door neighbor from whom we heard about Moss decided not to use them after our experience.

It was slow to start as we required an architectural drawing and county approval. After Christmas, things moved along quickly even though it was winter. Sometimes, the crew was there and the weather was freezing. I know they had to dig deeper for the footings and had to redo the pool shell, yet everything seemed seamless. We are very pleased and use the pool almost everyday.
Description of Work: We had a bedroom, ADA bath and pool(endless) with room put on the back of the house. We put down ceramic in pool and bath and hardwood in the bedroom. We replaced the tile in the laundry/pantry with hardwood. The work did not impact the normal functions of the rest of the house, even though it joined at 3 spots. Replaced a sliding glass door with a wall and a wall with windows with a french door that allowed us access to the pool. You can get to the bathroom via the pool room or the new bedroom. The quality was great and everything that was added including the matching paint and wood color with the rest of the house was seemless.

We were very pleased with their work. They were very professional and very good with followup. It got a bit difficult towards the end of the project because of winter weather. They cleaned up after themselves. The only criticism that I have is that you have to be really flexible because when they did the plan it wasn?t drawn to scale. Initially we thought of having a closet, but in the end there was no room for a closet.

Great!! Moss was very reliable and easy to work with from start to finish. Jason, one of the owners, met with us first and provided a comprehensive and detailed price quotation. He worked with us to make adjustments so that the project would fit our budget. Jason continued to be personally involved with our project throughout the 4-month construction period. The architect promptly provided plans that fit our needs and sailed without issue through the county permitting process. Our project manager was very responsive and personable and kept the work flowing smoothly. All of the Moss employees and subcontractors were polite and professional. The HVAC subcontractor was particularly hardworking and diligent. Work was performed as cleanly as possible, sealing off the existing house from the new addition and trying to keep the construction mess out of the living spaces. Any issues that arose were handled promptly and to our satisfaction. I would definitely recommend Moss for any of your home improvement needs! This is a high quality, customer-focused company.

Because of the extent of our addition, we got started a little late. However, once started we moved along. They made the time when they had to cut into the existing house barely noticable. When matching existing paint which was old, they did a wonderful job as well as matching the hardwood colors. The foreman, Jay, responded to our questions with solid answers and the carpenter, Dolan, was a perfectionist. I know we got quality workmanship for a reasonable price.
Description of Work: We had an endless pool in an enclosed room, an ADA compatible bathroom, and a bedroom added onto our existing house. We had hardwood floors in the bedroom and had the vinyl in our laundry room/panty pulled up and hardwood put down. Both the pool room and the bathroom had ceramic tile.

Went well. The entire project took about a month and was managed to minimize our inconvenience. The most major part (demo, install new load beam, and electrical) were done in one week while we were on vacation. Everyone we worked with was friendly and professional, including recommendations for external contractors like countertops and tile.
Description of Work: Small kitchen and hallway renovation. Removed a load bearing wall, replaced with breakfast bar. Added 6 new cabinets and countertops in the new space (original cabinet and appliance footprint remained untouched). Also moved the entrance into the kitchen, expanded the entrance into the family room and moved a wall in the powder room. Replaced kitchen lighting with 8 new recessed lights, plus added/moved a bunch of electrical outlets, thermostat, and doorbell. Added/repaired drywall, molding/trim, and hardwood floor.
