I contacted Moss Home the end of June to schedule an estimate. They said I would have to wait two weeks for an estimator but they could have the work completed by the end of July. I met with Jim the estimator on the 9th of July and he promised a quote within 3 days. Eight days later I receive the estimate but I was assured that work can be started the following week. He told me to contact his wife Barb to go over any contract details and scheduling. I called Barb three times and she never called back. She contacted me by e-mail with one answer to several question I had -- that one being about carpet allowance. I tweeked the contract to add in missing descriptions of materials and sent it back to Barb and Jim anxious to get started and make the required deposit. They never responded. I placed calls again to both of them and again no reply. On August 6, about six weeks after my initial contact, I gave up -- tired of being jerked around. Having lost six weeks, I had to start from scratch with a new contractor. I called Home Depot services and within a week I had several quotes for each of my jobs. They have been incredibly professional and have already started the work. Hard to believe a big box store can be so fast and competitive but they are. Summary: I suspect that many highly rated Angie list companies are victims of their own success. They get too big to provide the good service that they start out with. I see Moss Home success pendulum is now swinging the other way. I WOULD AVOID MOSS Home Services IF YOU WANT FAST SERVICE AND PROFESSIONALISM.

As a company that values professionalism and excellence it is very upsetting to see that this was not portrayed in your experience with MOSS. We understand you were excited and anxious to start your project, but we never begin work without a signed contract. The contract revisions that were made were unattainable and as a result contributed to slowing down the overall process. We firmly believe that as a company grows you can continue to have the same level of customer care and superior service that a company started with. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will take your feedback to better our current processes and customer experience. Although no apology will help repair the level of frustration you felt, we are very sorry that your experience did not match MOSS’ superior customer care.

We were very pleased with the work Moss did for us, and would definitely use them again. We found Moss on Angie?s List and feel that they have earned the very high rating that they have on this site. The work was first class and we have received nothing but compliments from everyone who has seen the house. From the beginning, when we were soliciting bids from contractors, we had a good feeling about Moss and were not disappointed. One of the owners, Pete, met with us on numerous occasions, listened and paid attention to our initial scope of work and made excellent suggestions and described different alternatives for what we could do in various areas. We interviewed five or six design/build firms before ultimately choosing Moss, and while we felt that almost all of builders we talked to were capable of doing the work, we felt that Moss did the best job of engaging with us before the project even began. We believe this engagement is critical when hiring a contractor, because reaching an understanding and getting the contract right before it is signed is one of the keys to reducing problems and/or misunderstandings once the project is underway. We bought the house in December, signed the contract with Moss in mid-January, and Moss began soon after. We were not living in the house during the renovation. Once the project began, our primary points of contact were Matt, our project manager, and Jodi, the design/customer care consultant. From the beginning, our project manager, Matt, met with us and walked us through the project and what we could expect. We were in regular contact with Matt throughout the project (either through telephone calls, email, texting, and site visits as needed), and we never once came across a situation where we felt he was not fully engaged in our project. If we had questions or needed a clarification, he returned our calls that afternoon or had an answer within a day. Matt did an excellent job about giving us heads-up when milestones were coming up which would trigger payments under the contract, when decisions about fixtures and appliances needed to be made, or the overall progress of the project. He was very professional, managed his crews well, and we were lucky to have him on the project. Also, Jodi engaged with us immediately, because given the scope of our project there was an overwhelming number of decisions and design choices that needed to be made, from faucets to countertops to light fixtures to paint colors. We thought we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, but I think it is safe to say that once the project was underway, we were a bit overwhelmed with the number of choices and options. That is where Jodi comes in. She has the contacts, she knows the various suppliers (granite, tile, flooring, etc.), and most of all she has the patience to both listen to what we were trying to do and provide helpful tips and guidance. She was very patient despite our indecisiveness, made excellent suggestions, and was a huge help to us in terms of getting the house to look the way we wanted. As with any relationship, things do not always go according to plan, and we felt that is where Moss really shines. We always felt that we were treated very fairly when there was a misunderstanding or a problem on the project. Sometimes Moss covered the cost, and sometimes we did, but we had excellent lines of communication and we never experienced the feeling that Moss had underbid the contract and was trying to make up the difference with change-orders and additional charges (which some people I know have experienced with other builders). The project wrapped-up on time (about three months from start to finish), except for a few outstanding items that were outside of Moss? control, such as waiting for Washington Gas to run the gas line to the house so that they could complete the installation of gas appliances. Our project went over budget (is there any other kind?), which was due to a combination of our somewhat expensive tastes in tile and granite and some materials allowances in the contract that were a little low (although in fairness to Moss, their allowances were in line with those of other builders, I just think the construction industry as a whole tends to price allowances too low). Another area where we have been pleased has been the post-project support from Moss. As with any project of our size, we have had a few call backs for minor issues (an undercabinet light wasn?t working correctly, minor drip under a sink, a low spot in one area of a large shower floor where some water was pooling). In each case we called Matt our project manager and he came out and assessed the situation and had guys on-site within a day out to address the problem to our satisfaction. Our experience with Moss was very positive, and we would use them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: We bought a 1973 colonial that was in its original conditional and in need of major updating. Moss contracted for and completed a whole-house renovation, including: complete kitchen redesign and remodel, redesign and remodel of the master bath (including expanding the master into an adjacent sitting room), complete update of two other bathrooms, complete basement remodel (insulation floors, walls, ceilings), new HVAC system (through a subcontractor), removal of several walls, substantial overhaul of the electrical system, substantial plumbing overhaul, running natural gas throughout the house and installing natural gas appliances, removal and replacement of old flooring (tile and linoleum) with hardwood floors, removal of wood paneling, popcorn ceilings and wallpaper throughout the house, moving laundry room from first floor to basement, complete painting of the interior, refinishing existing hardwood floors, widening interior doorways, installing crown molding, and various other projects.

I purchased the $500/8 hr deal from Angie's list specifically for plumbing. I was a little skeptical thinking I was not going to get professional or quality services due to the price. However, WAS I WRONG!!!! Danny came out and did an amazing job, working non-stop. I received the full 8 hours of service and talk about professionalism, he couldn't have been more professional, helpful, hardworking, or honest if he tried. The company over exceeded my expectations and I plan on purchasing another coupon while it's still available for some carpentry and electrical work I need done. In addition and aside from the wonderful job Danny did, the company also accommodated me over a week earlier from their original scheduled date which was extremely helpful to me considering the issues I had with my plumbing. I will also be looking to Moss Building and Design/Home Services for quotes on siding and window replacement as I fully trust their workers and the quality of service and work they provide.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen sink, faucet, garbage disposal; replaced toilet shut-off valve in master bath; fixed toilet by replacing gasket and repairing tank from overflow; replaced outside spigot; installed a copper water line for freezer; snaked the kitchen pipes approx. 30 feet; replaced the kitchen piping.

They were very good. They were non-nonsense in a way that they didn’t push more services on us. They seemed genuine and I appreciated that they did a little more than I thought they were going to do because I hadn’t asked them to tar some of the shingles but they did that.

The experience went pretty well. It turned out good. The carpenter came out and put the doors in just fine. He got down a little sooner than we expected. He showed me a couple of other things around the house that I was looking to get anyway. We were very pleased with him. We really liked the gentleman that was sent out. The woman we dealt with for scheduling didn't exactly call me back when we were trying to confirm the appointments. We had questions with her. The service scheduling people were not so great, but the gentleman they sent out was spot on. He was right on time. He was great.

From the estimate through completion, we could not be happier with Moss. The project took a little longer than originally scheduled, but it was worth the wait for our beautiful finished basement. The delay in completion was due to not having a full crew for a few weeks of the job...one guy finishing up another job at the start of ours and taking a week of vacation. We were not on a tight schedule, so we did not mind. The crew was VERY professional and respectful of me, my family, and our space. Their workmanship is excellent. They took a completely unfinished basement space that was used for storage of junk and turned It into the nicest space of our 3.000 (now nearly 5,000) square foot house. We like them so much that we hired their home services division a few weeks later to help move some furniture into our new space, and we definitely plan on using them again for future projects.

A Moss consultant came by to sit with us a get our remodel requirements. Our project included moving the W/D from the basement, closing off existing bay window, installing point of service water heater, and expanding closet walls. The Moss quote did not include painting. The Moss consultant was very professional and patient. She seemed like a good person to do business with, and Moss seemed like a good company to do business with. We ultimately went with a different contractor, who we really connected with.

Justin is very courteous and professional. He took precise measurements so that his estimate could be as precise as possible. Although the estimate was overpriced in my opinion, given the company's impressive portfolio of work, it would have probably been top notch. Justin understood that everyone has a budget and he seemed willing to accommodate. We needed an estimate pretty quickly (within a week) and I was disappointed it took over a week to receive, despite promises I would have it sooner. I'm over it now but at the time, I was frustrated with the delay. I was excited to work with Moss but it was just way too expensive given my budget. I hired a much smaller contractor that was able to do more with less.

Overall it went very well. The project manager, Bob, was absolutely fantastic, we really cannot say enough about his amazing attention to detail and total customer satisfaction mentality. He was literally with us throughout the project morning, noon and night. He was always available and always willing to answer questions or explain any issues we might have been having. His team of plumbers (Bobby), Electricians (Butch) and the amazing carpenters/handymen (Marty and Elwood) were the best. Between the kitchen redo and all the trim/carpentry updates done throughout the house, they brought a well kept 1980's home up to date in 2012. The place looks fantastic, is extremely functional and suits our family and our needs perfectly. The process could not have been easier, and aside from a few glitches with the cabinetry (should have consulted with Bob before picking out the cabinets), the carpets sub-contractor (mixed up which room to replace the carpet in) and the tile place (Mosaic) which screwed up our backsplash order 3 times, it went very well. I would also highly recommend the painting subcontractor Moss uses (Reuben), his paint and trim work were the best I have ever seen. He made trim work look like enamel. The Moss office staff were also fantastic, from the first impression (Linda) on the phone to excellent customer service (Jodi) it could not have been a more pleasant experience. (Thanks Jodi for helping us pick out gorgeous granite countertops, we are still in awe of them!). As for the owners, we dealt directly with Jason Hampel who did our initial estimates and helped us come to a final agreement on the project. At the end we we worked with Justin as we finished up the services. We would definitely use Moss again if we were ever going to do another remodel and have recommended them several time to our friends and colleagues.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel, including moving walls and running a gas line for a new range. Paint throughout the house. Wainscot in the dining room, update a dated built in, installed a flat screen tv, wired and redid a theater room, moved built in cabinetry to another location, updated a media center, installed recessed lighting, enlarged an upstairs bedroom by taking space from another bedroom which included reconfiguring a closet, ran gas lines for a gas range and gas dryer, properly vented the laundry room. Oversaw the installation of new carpet in the basement.

Moss arrived at the appointed time, and assessed the problem. Gary, the electrician, proposed that I replace the fixture as it had rusted. He said he could replace what I had or go with LED lighting, which has a 20 year life cycle and is energy efficient. I decided to go with the LED lighting. He went to Home Depot to purchase the fixture at his cost, and he did not include the trip in the hour time needed to complete the repair. The job was completed within an hour, and he also made suggestions for other electrical questions I had. The fixture looks much better than the original, I now have a dimmer and it is energy efficient! The assessment was $35, and the work was $94 an hour. Moss has a customer for life.

Removed wall paper from kitchen, downstairs hall way and upstairs hall way. Painted area where wall paper was removed and painted a bedroom (no wall paper in this room) that was empty & had no furniture in it. Work time on the written estimate I was given for the project was 2.5 days. Total work actually took 5 days. The workers were very punctual; arriving same time each day & leaving same time each day. Both men were personable and friendly. I selected the paint color & they purchased it from Lowe's.The same color paint was applied to all areas. The last of the entire project was the painting of the bedroom. However, the worker who painted the bedroom left that day at their normal departure time of 4:00 P.M. but did not complete the painting of the bedroom, ie,doors, window frame, wood frame around bottom of walls and closet, claiming that it needed semigloss paint which he said he had none. He advised me of this only after I mentioned the unfinished areas when I went in the bedroom to inspect the work & asked about the unfinished work just as he was leaving at 4 o'clock.(There was plenty of paint left over from the painting of the kitchen and down stairs and upstairs walls). I called the company who sent the other worker to come back and complete the bedroom painting a week or so later. He did an excellent job. (note: I purchased the paint, paint brush & tape for the completion of the bedroom painting). Overall, the two workers did a good job however, I was disappointed with the total performance of one of the workers.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are always looking for ways to improve and have taken the appropriate steps to keep this from happening again. It was our understanding that the contract did not discuss painting the trim around the doors, baseboards or widows. We understand how that was not communicated properly. We have since talked with the Moss professional who wrote the contact about being more specific in contracts to eliminate any confusion. We really value the feedback we get from our customers and we take the appropriate steps to ensure that all our home services techs are performing up to Moss standards and are demonstrating the values that our company was founded on. We’re sorry that your home improvement experience was not one that is typical of Moss and for any frustration it caused. Overall, we are happy with the finished product and we enjoyed working with John Jenkins who is very responsive and professional. Both our floors and door look great. However, there were glitches along the way. To start with, the person from Moss who first came out to review the project and give us a quote told us that Moss doesn't use sub-contractors, which turned out not to be true. Both our door and flooring were installed by sub-contractors. The biggest issue was that the sub-contractor who installed our door was not familiar with the particular door we purchased (Therma-Tru - an expensive fiberglass door). He was unable to install the lock and, in fact, did not install it correctly and Moss had to take the lock to a locksmith to fix. As a result, we were without a lock on our entrance door for 5 days. Also, the sub-contractor didn't place the pads that make the door air-tight. We had to ask the door manufacturer for a service call to touch up some paint and that's how we found out the pads had not been installed. Additionally, the holes made from the nails in the frame are supposed to be filled with wood filler and touched up with paint provided by the door manufacturer -- that was only done after I contacted Moss and asked for this to be done. So what should have taken a day or two to be completed ended up requiring 5 visits from the sub-contractor. The floor, also done by a subcontractor, was generally fine, although twice I had to point out flaws with the work. That said, Moss (John Jenkins) was quick to deal with the sub-contractor and have these issues resolved with a follow-up visit. The end product is good - both the door is in securely (with a fixed lock) and the floor looks very nice (both the new and refinished floor). Had I known originally what I know now, I would have hired Lowes that sold us the door to install it becuase, as I found out, they are specially trained by the door manufacturer on how to properly install Therma-Tru doors. To be fair, both sets of sub-contractors were courteous and came through in the end. Also, John Jenkins from Moss was very responsive and stayed on top of things until the project was completed. I would likely use Moss again because of my good experience with John Jenkins, though I have some reservations.
Description of Work: Moss Home Services (through sub-contractors) replaced our entrance door, replaced part of our hardwood floor and refinished the hardwood floor on the main level of our house.

Thank you for your feedback and the opportunity to work with you on your home improvement. We do under some circumstances use sub-contractors. They are sub-contractors that we know very well and have worked with for a very long time. We are very sorry that that was not communicated to you correctly and will definitely do a better job at communicating it from here on out. The lockset which came with the door from Lowes was missing a spring which we were unaware of until we could not get the lock to work. We thought it would be faster to take it to a locksmith to have the missing part replaced instead of having you order a new one. The door locked from inside by lifting the door handle up and it would unlock itself when you opened the door, which is why it would have appeared to not lock. Although we try our best to eliminate them, problems still arise and we take care of them to the absolute best to our ability. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and stress this may have caused. We’d love the opportunity to work with you again and provide you with an excellent Moss experience. We are always looking for ways to improve our company, and you’re feedback will help us do so. Thank you for taking the time to share.

They sent me to other company and we had to wait a week to get there and they had cancelled as the following week we had to finish up and they don’t give us much time. They did tell me they didn’t have appointment for me and there was miss communication and we thought we had an appointment. The second week after they cancelled they said they scheduled us. I complained as it took three weeks. I kept calling Moss but they never returned the call. He never follows through and we finally got hold of him and he got hold of the other company and they gave me a quote. He miss quoted me because he made an error. He quoted me $7 per tile allowance and I found out that he didn’t do that. He has got it on the computer and I thought it is unprofessional. We did question it because it was pretty low for bathroom tiles and he said, ‘trust me, trust me’, and just go pick up the tiles but the quote was different. He said sorry and he sent a new quote and I said it sounds fishy and I asked him to email it. So they are up there and he is overbooked and he is busy. He dragged me along and gave me an increase and didn’t do adjustments on it. They didn’t honor the coupon from the Home Shop. Regarding their responsiveness someone did try calling me.
Description of Work: I had a quote from Moss Building & Design l Moss Home Services for back splash and a cutter room floor and wall but they dropped the ball.

Moss Building & Design l Moss Home Services did a good job. Their price was reasonable. They said that they standby on their work, we have had a couple problems since then and they were good at coming by and correcting them.Their responsiveness sometimes slipped during the job.

The vendor provided a cost estimate for a kitchen remodel. The cost estimate was in the same range of the other vendors evaluated.
Description of Work: I met the vendor at the Home and remodel show in Chantilly in Mid January. During my discussions with him, I realized he installed cabinets from Bertch. The bertch cabinet line was where I was leaning initially for my project. However, as my plan started to come together, I decided Bertch did not have the style door I wanted. I met with the vendor for an estimate. He arrived on time/early. He came in and took pictures, measured the space, answered questions, get a feel for what I was leaning towards. He provided a cost estimate for the entire project with allowances for areas in which decisions had not been finalized. The written estimate was provided within a week of the visit. Pete was very friendly and reached out while on vacation to make sure I had received the paperwork.
The owner, Pete Hampel, was very responsive to all my calls and emails. He gave me ballpark figures over the phone, then came over to my house to get more details, and within a week emailed me a detailed cost estimate for the work. We ended up going with a similar priced bid that was a little more local and had earlier availability, but we wouldn't have had any problems going with Moss. We will consider them for all future projects.
Description of Work: Requested a bid to do a two-story addition to our house in Springfield, VA. This included a major kitchen remodel, a master bathroom and closet addition, a deck and front porch addition, and a basement excavation and finishing for a media room.

My wife and I started looking around at contractors for finishing our basement late last year. We found Moss on Angie's List and contacted them along with with three other companies. A designer -- Valerie -- visited our home and spoke to us about what we wanted to do with our space; she came up with an initial design with our input and we spoke with other contractors. My wife and I take our time and put careful consideration into our decision-making when we're looking to spend this amount of money. Moss -- and Valerie -- were patient with our timeline and professional at all times. The designer came out to our home a second time to talk about some additional ideas in February / March and gave us another estimate. We called three of the local references from the long list we were given by Moss -- all the references had highly positive things to say. In the end, however, we went with another contractor who had worked on a number of homes in our neighborhood whose estimate was somewhat lower than Moss. In the end, I'm sure that we wouldn't have gone wrong by choosing Moss -- it was a difficult decision to make --and we'll keep them in mind for any future work when the time comes.
Description of Work: Moss performed design work and provided an estimate for finishing our basement.
