The crew arrived on time. The project took all day, but they were good about cleaning up and making sure everything was in proper working order before they left. The boss arrived about 1/2 way through the project and made sure all was done properly according to the contract, and the final bill was exactly what we were quoted. Everyone on the crew worked hard, and read the codes to make sure all was in compliance. We are happy.

After we switched out to the filter that they had told us to, we had heat. They were very honest. I was impressed with their honesty.
Description of Work: We used the "Big Deal" that we purchased for the services of Millies Heating and Air Conditioning. We had a problem with our ground floor bedroom not being warm enough and they came in and checked the system and recommended that we not use the filter that we were using.

From start to finish, this was as pleasant as could be. When Andy came out to provide the initial estimate, he listened to what I wanted and provided pricing information for exactly that. He didn't stop there, however. He noted a couple of areas in which I could receive a better value. There was no hard sell, just a statement of what he thought might be added to the package to improve my satisfaction with the installation. He quoted prices for multiple systems, one of which was nearly identical to other proposals, but at a lower price. He actually recommended, and I agreed to, a second system that was even less expensive. There was absolutely no hard sell or up sell in his proposal. Installation was just as pleasant. Jack and Mike knew exactly what needed to be done. Even though the day was rainy and they had to work in it, they maintained their sense of humor, and completed the job. To protect the house, they had pads and took care to use them when entering. When they completed, you could not tell that folks had been walking in and out in the rain. Even better than that, they spent quite a lot of time making sure that the system they installed was fully operational. Although that sounds like what one would normally expect, I had specified the thermostat and the manufacturer provided less than acceptable information on how to make it work with my wi-fi set up. Finally, they noticed a couple of minor things that weren't part of the installation, but that would improve my heating and cooling. They took care of those even though that was not part of what I had contracted for. I hope these folks are around if this system ever wears out.

Service was great and the technician was able to assist me with correcting my humidifier. Everything went well once I was able to get them to the house.
Description of Work: Purchase a Big Deal for a service call from Millies. The first attempt to come out to the house they were more than 2 hours late and I had to reschedule for a different day. The next time they came they were on time and help me correct my in home humidifier. I could not get it to work.

I am extremely happy with the service Millies Heating and Air Conditioning provided. Jack and Mike are true professionals. They arrived on time and immediately covered the carpet with tarps. The installation went very well. The owner, Andy, stopped by and explained the system and the workings of the new thermostat to me. I really appreciate this new thermostat, I can now regulate the thermostat from my phone. How cool is that! I'm very happy I selected Millies for the purchase and installation of my new system. They are the best!

He looked at the system which another company had said needed full replacement. He said it seemed to be working fine. He did detailed readings. I called a third company which mostly agreed. Several months later the system is working fine so it appears this company was correct.

We realized the heater was not working when we woke up to cold air blowing out of the vents. We called that morning to schedule an appointment and assumed we would not be able to get service for several days. We were pleasantly surprised when they were able to squeeze us in on the same day we called. The technician called when he was on his way which fell in the beginning of the service window time they had promised us. Once he arrived he diagnosed the problem quickly and fixed it right away. We were relieved that it was not a major repair. He was very friendly and professional and even gave us some guidance on replacing our thermostats because we are not happy with the existing ones. The next time we have an HVAC issue we will definitely call them back.

The experience with Millie's was strong. The technician was professional and recommended a comparable unit for the replacement that was in the same price range as competitors in the area. The tech scheduled an installation for the following day, which was completed in about 3 hours. Overall a good experience.

We came back from a 6+week vacation on 3/20 and furnace not working. Called Millies after consulting Angie's List. Repairman came out on 3/21 and replaced a pressure switch and got furnace going. Next morning no heat so called back. Next repairman came on 3/22 and said control board was shot and system was leaking with chance of CO leakage. Got an estimate on replacement of entire system because I knew both heater and AC were at end of service lives (20 years for furnace and 22 years for AC). Estimate came in $1500 below two estimates I had gotten two years earlier when I was thinking of replacing system to get tax credit. Ordered work done for the $7847 price and was completed on Saturday, 3/23. Original pressure switch repair cost was credited toward new system. Work was done from 8am to 2:30pm on a Saturday. Owner Andy came over on Friday to look place over before doing work to make sure right equipment was being ordered for size and layout of our home. He also brought two space heaters. All appointments were as estimated and calls were made before coming over. I felt Andy and his people really had their act together in responding to our needs. One small hitch. Woke up Sunday and could not get hi tech thermostat to work. I called Millie's and got a response with an offer later in the afternoon to send over a technician. By that time I had rebooted thermostat and got it to working so no need for anyone to come out. Did feel I could have been better briefed on setting up and operating thermostat. Minor issue. Overall excellent price and service. Good group of folks to work with.

It is nice to work with a company that goes above and beyond when customers are in a difficult situation. I am very, very pleased with the responsiveness, service, quality and care.
Description of Work: I knew my water heater was on its last leg and had scheduled a time for Millie's to come out to give me a quote. Well as fate would have it, my gas hot water heater was leaking and gas company had to come out. I then let Millie's know that evening that I was going to need a replacement ASAP. I gave them information on my old water heater's brand, model, etc. Then I got a call back saying they would see if it was possible to give me an estimate and do the work the next morning. This was all after normal work hours. That night I got a call from the owner, Andy, to give me some more information. I had a bad connection and had to call him back about a half hour later...close to 9 PM at night. He talked me through my options for replacement and/or the cost to repair. He sent me information to look up the water heater options/recommendations. Spoke with him again that night and made my decision. They scheduled the installation the next day. They showed up on time the next morning and started the instillation. They kept me informed with the whole process. The first water heater they brought over was dented when they removed it from the package. I found out because they came up and told me they were going to return it and get a new because it had been dented. Wow, without even thinking twice or asking. They came back on time and got the replacement done. They made sure that any questions that I had were answered and had all the information that I needed. They cleaned up everything. The owner came by that afternoon as well to make sure any questions were answered.

I feel like I was way overcharged, and that I was taken advantage of. I would not recommend them to anyone. My initial call was for them to come out and examine my system to do find out if I did in fact need freon added or if there was another problem. The technician, Franco, was on time. Upon his arrival he informed my friend, I was not home I was in route, he needed access to the outside unite. After examining the unit Franco called me to let me know he found that I needed a new "contractor". I asked what this was and it took him a while to really explain it to me to wear I could understand because he kept telling me I needed this part in order for my system to work but it was on and running just on auxillary heat. Once we got through that I asked him was that the root of my problem he told me he didnt know and that he needed to replace that part in order to get the system "properly" operational so he can see what the problem is and why this part went bad so early ( I recently had the system installed a year ago). I asked him how much would that cost he said $189. I told him to go ahead. Fifteen minutes later he called me back and said ok, i found your problem. He said there was a leak in a pipe and that is why my freon is low it leaked out and he needed to put a new piece of pipe on and re-braise (sp). Then he said I had little and almost no freon in my system. He told me he would have to dump out what was left and re-fill my sytem. And all of the including the contactor would cost $689! I said what? I asked if he could break down the cost and how did it get so high. He said, well you know the contactor was $189, then to braise and replace the pipe and put the freon back in is $500 thus $689. Now I was shocked at the cost. so I asked to break down the extra $500. I asked how much was the freon. He said $50/lb. I asked how many pounds would I need he said 4.5. I said thats about $225. So the rest of the money is to fix the pipe. He said yes. I thought about it and told him not to do the rest of the work. I would pay for the contactor. When I arrived at home I asked him to show me what he had replaced. He showed it to me. I asked him to show me how he knew the part was bad and he shined the light from hiz cell phone on it and didnt say a word! I said OK...?? How did you know he said there. I asked where. He said right there. I asked what am I looking for. He THEN explained. Which I thought I should not have had to ask. Then I asked him to show me what needed to be done outside. First I asked where the piece he replaced came from. He showed me a panel on the unit that only had two screws to take off to access the part. He then showed me the pipe where the leak was and that the pipe was wet. He then showed me a knob and said that needed to be replaced as well. From what it looked like to be was that the pipe, if it was leaking just needed to be re-welded. Not replaced. Especially not the knob. He said he needed to take all that off to do a good thorough job and then he had to vaccuum the system out.. He couldnt really explain to me what that was. By now I'm realizing he may not know how to explain what he is doing or he doesnt really know. So I paid him and decided to do a little research on the part. Because from what I could see this did not look like a part that would cost anywhere close to $189 nor did the amount of time it took him to replace it (15 minutes). At this point I was a little disturbed. But once I looked up the part I was upset because just as I suspected the part was very cheap. I assumed it would be $50 but to my surprise the most expensive part was $15.95!! Now if the part online is $15.95 I can only imagine how much they paid for it considering they buy in bulk! And then the labor was only 15 minutes. So why was this a $189 job??!! I immediately called Angie's List to file a complaint. They told me I had to call the company first. I did and left a message with the answering service. I got a call back from a manager--Andy within 10 minutes. Andy was very defensive immediately. First of all the answering service gave him mis information. Then he asked me, "You think $189 is too much to pay for a contactor change and a leak check". I responded, I was not charged for that. I was charged for a contactor not both. He told me I was wrong and mistaken. He said that actually the amound of money I paid for the service was cheaper than the part. Now what company do you know will do that?? He kept telling me I was wrong and that I recieved a good service. And kept telling me I was charged for the contactor change AND the leak check. I kept trying to tell him that was incorrect because the contactor change price and work was done BEFORE the leak check was performed because Franco told me he needed one to do the other. Andy was not hearing me. So rather than go back and forth I hung up and called Angie's List. He repeatedly called me back and I never answered. This morning I heard my voicemail where he said he wanted to talk but at this point I'm done talking to he had his chance. I felt harrassed and no longer wanted to deal with them. I would not advise anyone to use this company and I feel they are trying to take advantage of homeowners.
Description of Work: What I hired them for was to come and find out why my heating system was using auxillery heat. I called the power company to find out why my electric bill was so high, they said it was due to heating. The engineer said it sounded like I probably needed freon added to the system. So when I called them, it was to add freon. He then said he needed access to look, and informed me I had a bad contactor. He said he needed to get that fixed to go on with the rest of the system, so I gave the go ahead. When he called me back, he let me know I did need freon, and that I had a leak in one of my pipes. He said he needed to fix that, and quoted me $689.00. I told him I wasn't sure if I wanted to get all that done, and I asked him to outline what needed done beyone the intial estimate of $189.00. He really didn't want to go into any detail with me. When I asked him to tell me how much each thing cost, he couldn't tell me. The freon was supposed to be $50 per lb and I needed 4.5 lbs. The rest of it was supposed to be for the labor and for the vacuuming of the pipe. When I asked him to explain to me what part needed to be replaced he was hesitant, and when I asked him to show me the pipe, I didn't really see anything. Afterwards, I went online to look at the part that was supposed to be replaced, and it came out to be about $14.99, and he had charged me $189.00. I don't know if that was for just the part, or the labor and the part, but either way, I did not get an itemized bill, and it did not even take him 10 minutes to do it. This was not an extensive job. If the part was $14.99 online, I'm sure he paid less than that, but that leaves $169.00 for labor, and it wasn't worth that much.

Response from Millie's HVAC
Hello Angie's List members this is Andy and I am the owner of Millie's Heating and Cooling. I wanted to take a moment and add some thoughts to this review. We arrived to this home to find the outdoor unit not operational. Upon inspection we found the contactor or main power source for the outdoor unit was fried and rendered inoperable. We called the customer and told her of the diagnosis, and asked why she didin't call the company which installed the unit( as the unit is 1-2 years old). The customer said that her father's friend, who is not a licensed contractor, installed it and she has had trouble getting a hold of him. At that time we gave a quote to her of $189 for the replacement of the contactor( by industry standards $189 for a contactor to include the service call fee is very reasonable). When we installed the contactor and checked over the system we found a leak in the service port of her outdoor unit. We found this leak because we performed a leak check at no additional charge to her because we wanted to give her an answer and provide a solution. We even showed the customer the leak, the total elapsed time from arrival to this point is one hour and 15 minutes. All this information is reflected on her invoice, a copy of which we left with her. I always try to see things from a customer perspective, while I deal with several repairs/installations on an every day basis, I realize that my customer's do not. In this instance I feel we have been more than fair with this customer even performing a leak check(which most companies price between $400-$700) at no charge as we realize an installation from an unlicensed individual could have multiple problems and we did not want to keep billing her, but instead tried to reverse the course of an improper installation. I never want to tell anyone how to feel, as it is not my right to do so, but I do implore this customer to take a look at the totality of the service performed, and if she still feels that we have "tried to take advantage of her" as she states, give me a call and I will send her check back to her(as stated on the phone message I left for her the day of the repair). I have never and will never deposit funds from a customer who does not feel 100% certain that we have acted fairly and in good faith on their behalf.

The inspection went great. Technician was prompt and attentive. A few weeks later, our heater stopped working. Another technician came out right away and Millies said they would not charge me for the visit if the problem stemmed from their original visit. When he tried out the system, it fired right up. Most guys would have left at that point, but the Millies guy kept messing around until he found a bird carcass that had gotten lodged in the flue. I happily paid (it obviously wasn't their doing) and was thrilled that they went to the trouble to solve my problem.

It was a pleasant, painless process. I highly recommend Millie's HVAC. The owner, Andy Popovici, performed the consultation the day after I called, provided advice on pros and cons on various systems, demonstrated the most transparent pricing system of the three contractors from whom I received proposals, performed the work a few days post-consult, provided space heaters while the work was being done, and followed through on all details during the process.

Andy came out and gave an estimate. The installers came at the agreed upon date and completed the job in one day despite running into some unexpected problems. The air conditioning works well, haven't had enough experience with the heating system to make an analysis since our winter has been so warm. In addition to Andy, I met Jack, Jeff and Evan. All were highly professional. I certainly would recommend them to others and now consider them my go to HVAC experts.

My 15+ year old gas furnace was not fully firing up. The blower would start, the flame would ignite, but it would not "catch" and the furnace would shut itself down. I ordered the $40 service call with Millie's and was immediately contacted by one of their representatives to schedule an appointment. They gave me a 2 hour time window that afternoon. The technician (Kenny) called ahead to say he was on his way and did arrive within the scheduled window. Kenny was courteous and professional, and easily diagnosed my sick furnace's problem. It turned out to be minor - a dirty flame sensor which needed cleaning. After he cleaned the sensor and tested that the furnace was operating properly, he took the time to give me an overview of how my furnace worked and what he'd done. He had checked the overall condition of my furnace and said that it was still in good shape. He did not try to push any service plans, etc. Overall, great experience (not having to replace my furnace was a plus) and customer service.

This the first time I used Millies which I got from AL. They did tune up my system and did not try to sell me a new system. I paid for a inspection and tune up which was not deducted from the bill since they replaced the contacts. I will post a followup review based on a problem I have had. Update 01/09/13: So I check on the outside unit and it is a block of ice. I called and was quickly able to get a tech out to check the system. The defrost board was not functioning and required replacement. However the 69 dollar fee would be removed from the repair bill. New board would be in Mon or Tuesday latest. Until then I needed to rely on emergency heat. The same tech (Ken) who diagnosed the original ice cube problem was able to get to my system late and install the new defrost board. System took awhile to start up but at the end the board was installed, freon was checked and the system was deem "okay". But the next morning the system was a block of ice again. So I called first thing to get system repaired. Everyone in dispatch was very concerned about my problem. I asked for a different tech since I had lost confidence in parts replacement mentality of trouble shooting. The new tech said that my system was low on freon and that is why it was frozen. When I asked what the pressure was when he measured it he said he didn't need to measure the freon, he could see that it was leaking from the oil stains. I ask how the freon leaked from last night when it was measured to the next morning when it was now causing the same problem that i had originally had. I was told the the system was old and he could not diagnose the problem the first time since the defrost board would not allow him to troubleshoot the problem. He said he could fix the system (i.e. leak) but it would cost over 1000 dollars. But he could provide me a "new" system for $6522 and motor mouth over the fantastic features. BTW he never did measure the freon level until I contacted the owner. Andy did provide me a reasonable quote for a new replacement system, but I'm skeptical about the service people. So the tech called me back and now stated my new board needed a timing adjustment (90 sec verse 60) and my unit was fully functional and I did not have to replace the system today. I am an engineer with a Masters degree, I can sense BS. This was a real hard sell for a system that still may be broken. My concerns: 1. If my system was "leaking" then it should have been leaking in Oct when I had my first service. I was never told of this and even was looking for a new system when I called them for the first time. 2. They Did not honor Angie's List discount. 3. May have replaced a part when it didn't need to be replaced. 4. Always speak to the boss. I'm not saying my system is not old or needs replacement but I tried to build a relationship with this firm since I was new in town. They tried to take advantage of me and their tech LIED to me. They need to make the $ correct and accept AL.
Description of Work: Hard sale push, replace parts that were not broken, did not honor AL discounts (billing problem). Update 01/09/13: It's all down from here. So I got a new defrost board that I may not have needed. They have me by the shorts!

Response from Millie's HVAC
Hello Angie's List members, my name is Andy and I am the owner of Millie's Heating and Cooling. I wanted to take a moment and add some thoughts to this review. Firstly we could have done a better job for this gentleman, especially in our tech's initial conversation with him. The customer was not home but wanted to understand the technical aspects of the failure which his system was experiencing. During the initial conversation between the customer and the technician some confusion arose as to the immediacy of the need for replacement. In an attempt to clear this up I spoke to the customer 20 minutes after the conversation with our tech. The customer and I spent 30 minutes on the phone together going over all aspects of the system and I felt we had a good conversation. The customer in fact does have a leak but I let him know that it is small enough that no immediate decision needed to be made as to replacement. I gave him a quote for the replacement which I feel was extremely fair and he in fact gave me authorization during our phone call to replace the system the following day. At that point I suggested he take some time to make the decision, as it was not an immediate need. The customer then thought that was a good suggestion. The following day the customer and I had another conversation, after he posted this review as it was completely different than our conversation of the previous day. During this conversation I made myself available to come by the home and affect any necessary repairs at no charge to the customer, but he refused. We did not charge this customer for the repairs which were performed, because we never want anyone to feel that we were trying to take advantage of them. I feel we have made every attempt to make clear any miscommunication which took place, and will ever strive to have better communication with our customers.

Millie's customer service representative was very responsive to my call and arranged a time for service. The technician was personable and explained in detail what he thought was the initial issue with my furnace, which seemed like a simple fix (replace the igniter that was damaged). After replacing the igniter, it appeared the control box was fried from the short of the igniter. Because my service call occurred later in the day, the technician had to come back the next day with the part. Fortunately it was a warm weekend and I have a space heater that kept things manageable. Unfortunately, upon install of the control box, the technician identified a problem with the gas valve, which could also have been replaced and cost another few hundred dollars. Given my HVAC unit was 16+ years old, and after discussing with the technician, I decided to replace my furnace. I did not want to risk having something else break during the winter. The technician ordered the furnace and two new technicians came the next day with the furnace. While I was told the technicians would stop by in the morning around 9 am, I did call Millie's to confirm the time of the technicians' arrival, which was 9:30 am. They laid tarp on the floor so as not to get dirt on my floor. It seemed pretty straightforward, they worked all morning and installed the furnace. So far, so good. My only recommendation to Millies is that the technicians who installed the furnace review the final product with the customer. the first technician explained the problems with the furnace and showed me what the issues were and why the furnace was not working. When the two techs completed the installation of the new furnace, I had to ask questions upon completion of the job, which they answered, but when they were done they just handed me the bill and the manual for the furnace.
Description of Work: What was a furnace repair call ended up being a furnace replacement. The cost of the individual parts that needed to be repaired was close to the cost of a new furnace, without a warranty on the parts, so I opted for a new furnace with 10 year warranty.

I came home in November, which hadn't been very cold, and noticed a chill in the house. Once I realized the HVAC wasn't working I searched Angie's for possible services. After reading reviews I picked Millies. I am so glad that I did. The team kept me informed, worked hard to get the part, and worked around my schedule to complete the job. So glad to have used them and will in the future. This is a company that keeps customers at the heart of their business model!
