Fee for 1-2 hour consultation is $49 for Angie's List members. Contract installation costs determined by the job. Family owned. We offer a limited Lifetime Warranty on installed trees and shrubs/ 5 year warranty on many hardscape items.
we worked with an amazing designed named Jill Lehman. She was a great listener, and generated a lot of ideas and a final plan that made both my wife and me very happy. The plants and tree were installed drama-free and were in great shape vice the semi- dead plants I've seen other nurseries/ designers use to clear their warehouse. I would highly recommend Jill to anyone looking for a great designer who is creative, professional and responsive!

I always liked them and I get back to them every year. I have good luck with their annuals and I haven't got anything else from them yet. I would probably get some dogwood trees in the future. They do plants and foyers as well. I haven't had any problems with them.

Overall the Meadows Farms crews were punctual and knew what they were doing. The crew foreman pointed out some deficiencies in the landscaping plan related to a stone pavers up a hill that if he had followed the original plan would have resulted in the stones washing out after one big storm. Although this required additional money to rectify I appreciate the fact he brought it to our attention and worked hard with his management to lower the cost as much as possible. Our designer Glenn, provided a great landscape and altered the plan based on our concerns and desires. I am not happy with the fact he did not identify his plan for the stone path was faulty and should have identified the need to alter it in spite of the additional cost. I am further upset that he has not returned our calls to discuss this issue. I would tentative recommend Meadows Farm but I will be hesitant to call them for follow-on designs until Glenn calls back like a professional should.
Description of Work: Completely new landscaping of our front and side yards. This included a stone pathway up the hill on on the right side of the house.

We made an appointment with the Landscape Designer and he quickly mapped out exactly what we were looing for. A few days later we received the design and put in the application for HOA approval. By the time we got back to the Designer with our approval letter from the HOA (approx 3 weeks) the pavers we seleceted were "not avialable". Well that was a show stopper. The Designer said he would get back to us with some similar paver colors and has not to date. It's been several weeks since that last conversation so, I suppose they are too busy.
Description of Work: Only a free survey and design was performed at this time.

I contacted Michael Gentile, one of Meadows Farms Landscape Designers, and set up a date and time to talk about my front and side yard. I had worked with Michael a year earlier for a small project in my front yard, before I was an Angie's List member, and had a very good experience dealing with Michael and Meadows Farms that I thought I would use them again this year. Michael came promptly at our arranged date and time. He is a very nice person as well as being very professional in demeanor. He listened, gave suggestions, and then said he would e-mail me a design in a couple of days. After I received the design, we conversed back and forth mainly through e-mails till we came out with a final design. He then sent a bigger final design through the mail. Michael and the installation crew came promptly on the scheduled date. The installation crew consisted of 3 laborers and 1 foreman. The 3 laborers worked very diligently and hard for the whole time regardless of whether or not Michael was present. I can't say the same for the foreman. After Michael left the project in the hands of the foreman, the foreman basically just sat in the cab of the truck with the radio blaring while the rest of his crew worked. It was the first over 100 degree day for the year, and so I certainly don't mind seeing people take a break and try to cool off, but I was disappointed to see that it was always the same person not working. The 3 laborers took short lunch breaks and went back to work, and the foreman took the truck and was gone for a very long lunch break. I periodically went out to give the workers some cool water and to see how things were going, and so this is when I noticed that even though I was suppose to have 4 people working on my yard, in reality I only had 3 people who worked extremely hard. For the amount of work that needed to be done those 3 did a terrific job. I like Meadows Farms. I like the results and most everyone that I have dealt with works very diligently and efficiently. They are a little more expensive, but they also have a "lifetime and replant warranty" with every plant that they install and so I think this benefit is worth paying a little more for.
Description of Work: They removed most of the existing shrubs and replaced them with 53 different shrubs. They laid down landscaping fabric and 54 bags of Cedar mulch.

Design: Meadows provided a landscape designer/consultant free of charge. I had a general idea of the layout I wanted, the designer worked with me on choosing low maintenance deer resistant plants that provide color nearly year 'round. Also, I coordinated with the designer to choose an installation date that allowed me to perform some of the work prior to the crew arriving in order to fit my budget. I was provided two landscape plans - one describing the work and plants the crew installed, and one desribing the work and plants (including locations, plant names) I installed. Designer's name: Jo Lynne Ausley. Crew: Arrived on time, finished on time, consulted with me on final bedding/sod borders, provided suggestions for plant and sod care. The crew actually scrubbed the driveway during cleanup. In the morning I had a mud yard, afternoon a beautiful landscape! Foreman's name: Sergio I recommend both the designer and crew - very professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with.

They work very fast. The work looked great when they were finished. I wasn't happy with the sizes of some of the plants (too small for the area--out of proportion to the rest of the landscapping). That was the Meadow's Farm planner's fault. Three plants died by winter and today (April 2011) they came out to look at the plants. They offered to replace the plants but I would have to pay for installation. I decided to take the store credit and I would replace the plants. They deducted 1/3 of the original labor cost for each plant. Overall I'm generally satisfied with the work. I won't use them again, though.
Description of Work: They installed about about 30 small plants (azaleas, nandina) in different areas of the yard. Mulch and some sod was also installed.

We had a poured cement walkway and we had that all torn up and put in a designed paver pathway. The designer name is Shauna. She came in and spent time with us. She walked around and she measured everything and showed us what her ideas were. We really liked the pavers. We wanted some plants and we did not know if we should remove or keep the existing bushes. She tried to work around what we already had to save our money, which was really good. She designed a walkway in a porch that was not too big for us, but fit in with the style of the house and also the neighborhood. Couple of months later, she called us to tell us that there is a big display area that has a whole bunch of samples. We went out there and we picked our colors of the stone that we liked. She called us when everything was on sale. They are very proud of their work. They also look out for the customer. They made our walkway beautiful. The price was excellent. She called us when everything was on sale. We saved half of the money on bricks. I would use their service in the future too.

It went very well. I liked their timing. I appreciated that they maintained the schedule. I liked the quality. It was done pretty well but I was not very happy with the choice of plants. They described what it was they planted and over time they grew up pretty well. I would use them again in the future if I needed to. I referred them to my neighbors and they have used them as well.

MF sent over a landscape designer who laid out a sod plan and planned our backyard out for free. A few weeks later a team showed up and laid topsoil and sod. It looks great! They delivered a truckload of mulch as well but we saved a bit of $$ by spreading it ourselves. They weeded the existing beds and removed weeds from the sod areas as well. It's rooting perfectly, I haven't seen a spot that looks distressed. They were also very careful to avoid our two baby fruit trees. The backyard is practically a paradise compared to what it was. There were a couple things I would have asked about if I'd been onsite--I wish they'd graded one spot away from the house a bit more, and I was under the impression they were going to dig out a drainpipe and backfill in before sodding since the drain tends to back up. BUT it's actually not too big a deal (I can fix it myself with a new grate), and it was probably more of a miscommunication on my part. And I think it looks better the way they did it. Still, be clear and get everything in writing if you're not going to be there. It's hard to be upset when the backyard looks SO great. I can't wait to start filling it in with perennials.
Description of Work: Meadow Farms graded, dug and added topsoil to a barren and weed-choked backyard. They placed and cut sod and cut new flowerbeds around the entire perimeter of the yard, and weeded out the two other existing beds.

FAIL! They came out to do the work, and did not have all the plants with them - geraniums were on back order for supposedly a week which turned out to be 4 weeks! They did not call me on the status either so I had to keep checking each week, because they had already taken FULL payment of my job. In the 4 wks while waiting for the geraniums, some plants they planted had DIED - they issued a credit for the plant but WOULD NOT COME OUT TO REPLANT IT!! Talk about AWFUL customer service follow through. BEWARE!! Once they take your money you probably won't hear from them. I would NOT recommend them to anyone.

We met with our designer at our home and she came up with a design for the entire backyard to include some of the elements we dreamed of having (patio, fireplace, pond, lush vegetation.) She then gave us an estimate of the cost to do the entire backyard which was entirely beyond our means. We asked her to focus just on the patio and she gave us an estimate of around $15K. After going back and forth a few times on options to reduce the cost, she came up with some sale pavers, reduced the size of the patio, and the number of plantings around the patio and we finally got down to something we could afford. While our designer was creative and incorporated the types of plants and other elements we requested, we did have some trouble with her communication and accuracy throughout the process. The biggest problem we ran into was that she made a mistake in the height of the stone steps which resulted in the construction crew having to increase the height of the entire patio. The height of the finished patio then resulted in a significant slope between the patio and the retaining wall. Fortunately, the head of the landscaping department reviewed the work and fixed the problem by increasing the height of the retaining wall at no additional charge. His words to us were, "Don't worry, we will make it right." Glad to see that good customer service still exists out there. In any case, another complaint we have about the designer was that she made several mistakes in the key codes for the plants on the final design. For example, we almost bought Rhododendrons when the plan really called for Knockout Roses. These two plants significantly differ in height so this would have been a big problem - the Rhododendrons would have completely blocked the view of the patio when at mature height. Unfortunately, although we brought up our concerns about the accuracy of her plan given the numerous mistakes we found, the designer never admitted fault and never so much as apologized for the errors. At the end of the day, however, we are very pleased with the workmanship of the patio and the design itself. The head of Meadows Farms landscaping department was helpful and the foreman was very professional. Our advice, should you decide to go with Meadows Farms, would be to make sure to get a designer that you can work well with, who communicates well and is detail oriented.
Description of Work: Installed circular stone paver patio, stone steps, short walkway from lower steps and 18" high stone retaining wall. Filled in the area between the patio and the retaining wall with fill dirt and planted two holly bushes and a 3 foot tall japanese maple.

The work was originally scheduled for 1.5 days, but was compressed into one day, so everything was rushed and quality suffered. The Cherry trees arrived looking wilted, one had lost a lot of leaves. The crew didn't water any of the trees after the planting was finished. The wrong color rock was delivered for the dry riverbed - I had to be very firm with the designer that I would not accept this material. Delivery of the correct rock added to the delay. A portion of the rock wall simply wasn't installed - the remainder was at an odd angle. The bed for the arborvitaes was not created as designed. They forgot to install rock along the footing of the house where the azaelas were planted, but did so after I reminded them.
Description of Work: Plant 3 Japanese Cherry Trees (2.5" Trunk), Five 3-gallon azaelas, two dogwoods (2.5 inch Trunk), Six Hollies (6 feet tall), and three arborvitaes (6ft tall). Create beds for these trees. Install dry river bed to improve drainage, including rock wall.

Very disappointing. Had some hardscaping put in by another small local firm that did excellent work but they only did hardscapes. Got an estimate from Meadows Farm for the landscaping and was very pleased with the designer and his initial work. We felt comfortable with his initial design concept and put down half the cost. After that everything changed and went very poorly.and it was like pulling teeth trying to get in contact with our designer again. The company was very forcefull about advance payment and while on a business trip my wife went ahead and paid in full (big mistake). The crew came and completed most of the work, however we never got a final design so the crew placed the plants based upon the draft designn even if that design was never approved by us. We asked them to move some trees which were in the wrong location and they did so only after much debate. They did not complete all the work identified (even on the draft plan). They also seemed to disappear with our beautiful boxwoods which were supposed to be transplanted not removed. In fairness to MF Nursery, the plants/trees they used were all very healthy and some of the work they did execute correctly and looked very good. You can see that they understand how to grow plants. However, their responsiveness to problems and changes (which always occur) was very bad. The drainage issues in our back yard was the initial reason we contacted landscapers. Not only did they not fix it but they actually made it worse. We asked for a specific fix (french drain) but were told that wasnt necessary and that surface drainage would work. However, the downspout extensions were buried under the new sod and after a very heavy rain my lawn actually had a water "bubble". Meadows Farm did come back out and reinstall the surface drains correctly, but the yard still has drainage issues which will have to be fixed by installing the original french drain we requested (by another contractor, not Meadows Farms) Additionally as previously mentioned the hardscape company was excellent not only in the construction of the project but in their treatment of my existing landscape. They were very cautious to limit their impact to the rest of the yard to the point of hand carrying all the building materials into the back yard to not destroy my driveway or side yard. Meadows Farm crew didn't care. To reach my side yard which needed leveling, they tore up my front lawn (the only sodded area) with heavy machinery and the grass struggled to come back before winter. This is even more upsetting since the lot next to mine is still not sold and is empty. They could have reached my side yard without any impacts at all. Meadows Farms weakness is in customer service, the lack of follow-up from the design team and the unprofessionalism of their work crews. I was extremely disappointed with all aspects of the design/build process as soon as they recieved their money. So if you really like their plants, go ahead and buy them. Just have someone else plant them. Oh and never pay up front.
Description of Work: Removed debris, cleaned existing plantings and re-mulched very large flower bed in back yard (250ft x 20ft), remulched 5 beds in front yard and built 6 new beds from scratch "Pulverized" and added organic material to aproximately 1/4 acre side yard. Leveled, rolled and topdressed for fall seeding. Fix drainage issues in back yard Emplaced 14 trees ranging from 8ft to 20ft high. Built small stack stone retaining wall and additional stone "bird feeding" station. Transplanted aproximately 35 plants Installed aproximately 25 new plants Sodded aproximately 2000 sf around new hardscape.

A very positive experience. All staff were super to deal with, and the landscaping product looks great!
Description of Work: Services included re-landscaping (new topsoil, mulch, complete re-planting) of the area (appx 30'x40') in front of our house, including the addition of rock walls. Design was performed by Ms. Jennifer Whalley in July. Extremely professional, she provided many alternatives to consider in dealing with the shady, steeply graded area we were working on. Lee and his crew from the Chantilly office skillfully executed the design in October (the delay between design completion and execution was my choice).

The designer, Nathan, did a good job and was very knowledgeable. The box wood and some moonbeams died within about six weeks and they sent out an inspector within a week. They were promptly replaced at no charge. A few more moonbeams have died since then and they are to be replaced within ten days, also at no charge. The job looks good and I would recommend them.
Description of Work: Added their mix of topsoil to beds in front of the house, on both sides of walkway, and planted a variety of plants including knock out roses, moonbeams, a box wood bush, a holly bush, a crepe myrtle, and others. Then added black mulch to all beds.

Very pleased. Designer (John Sargeant) did a great job - asked for and welcomed our input, made suggestions. provided options and developed a design that has greatly improved the "curb appeal." Foreman & crew did a great job. Cleaned up and made sure that we were satisfied before leaving. Good experience with customer service - one plant was not available on the day installation was schedule - came back and installed the material within the promised timeframe; one plant suffered some winter damage and was replaced in the spring, without question, again, within the promised timeframe.

Experience was great. We had a design from a previous landscape architect that we really liked but wanted to price shop and get a second opinion on the plants and tree recommendations for our small lot. Judy Brown was flexible to work around our work schedules came out and reviewed the design and provided her thoughts on selections. Judy was able to work with us to phase the job to fit our budget and in the end we were able to accomplish most all of the work due to the excellent pricing Meadows provided. Judy also gave us design suggestions for tieing our front landscape into the back in a future project. The foreman arrived on time and had all materials in the truck. They completed the entire job in 2 days, a day less then estimated. What a transformation. They were even flexible when I added a tree trimming job and a couple additional trees to the order and accomplished right then. Looks amazing. And the plant quality is gorgeous.

I'm not real happy with what we put in. I've never really planted anything before, but I told him what kind of plants I liked and he constructed the plan. I'm don't think the plants look very well, and I'm probably going to end up talking alot out. Quite a few of the plants are dying, and they've already replaced 3 plants, 3 months after they put them in. I have other plants that now need to be replaced. I had to do alot of work after they left because the plants they used were 1/2 dead or broken. They only scheduled 1 day to install a whole yards full of landscaping. They also dumped all of the landscaping materials (stone, mulch, ect.) on my driveway, which I now have to have resurfaced. It cracked from the weight of the materials and the truck.
Description of Work: They installed all new lanscaping and stone around my house.
