Description of Work: Mannix installed a high efficiency furnace, with humidifier and whole house air filter. My overall review is, communication between sales, office staff and workers is very poor. The price was decent, and general quality good but lack the attention to detail. It was a hassle to make sure they followed through with all they said they would. | |In the fall we had our old furnace serviced and learned it was no longer usable. We got quotes and signed the contract with Mannix on a Thursday. We did not have heat, but were able to keep the house warm with alternate sources over the weekend (50 degrees outside). I was told they would arrive Monday between 8 and 9 am since the work would take at least 6 hours. There was poor communication between the sales guy and the office. After a few phone calls Monday morning they finally arrived after 1 pm. Finally around 6:30 or 7 pm, they were hurrying to finish and it caused sloppy work. They tried to show me finished pipes for the humidifier before the glue was dry and it fell apart as we looked at it. They told me that the bottom air return needed a different part for them to install the air filter, so they would have to return another time to finish. When I asked why only one PVC pipe was installed instead of the two I was told would be, they told me it was safe with only one. They asked for entire payment, and I had to tell them I would not pay the $250 for the air filter until it was installed. They left the property only to return a few minutes later because both workers thought the other had finished sealing off the chimney that was no longer used. | |After a such a poor experience I immediately called and spoke to the owner. He was extremely responsive and immediately drove to my house to inspect the work done. I explained that the sales guy told me there would be 2 PVC pipes leading to the outside, one for the intake and a second for the exhaust. However, the workers only installed one PVC pipe. He assured me that one was safe, but since I was told two they would fix it and install two. The problem was, the sales guy had not properly measured the room and they didn't have enough PVC pipe in the truck for two. He promised to make it right for me with his best crew and offered me a one year service contract free of charge to make up for the experience. When they came back and fixed the furnace they installed the second PVC pipe, air filter, and even fixed a patched hole in the hot water flue. They were early and extremely polite. They clearly were working very hard to make me happy. When I went to pay them for the remaining $250 for the air filter, the worker told me no more payment was required. I told him, that I still owed for the air filter. He texted the office and received a text back that said do not collect any payment. I double checked with him and he said he was sure, so off he went. A few days later I receive a bill for the $250 balance. I was super annoyed at this point. We called and explained what we had been told and they waived the remaining balance. | |Now I thought that since he knocked money off the total, we wouldn't still get the service contract, but we did. They called and set up an appointment. I explained that I worked in the AM, but could be home by 2 pm any day, so we set up a day. When I arrive home at 2, there is a message saying they arrived at noon and waiting 20 minutes and then left since I wasn't there. Again i was super annoyed the office staff had not clearly given all the details to the technicians. I had purchased replacement air filters and left them near the furnace. When they came to service the furnace, he said "I used the air filters you had, that ok?" I had sort of assumed that I would need to supply them. In the fall, I hadn't realized both the furnace and the humidifier needed to have the filter replaced. He told me this time, that he used the air filter I purchased but installed his own for the humidifier. Here I was wondering if he would charge me for the filter he installed, but he didn't. So then I wondered if the service contract was supposed to include the filter, when I had already purchased them. He leaves and for the next three weeks the house is extremely dry. I finally think to check the humidifier and find that he never turned it back on and it was off for a month. That's when I decided that the service contract wasn't worth it. | |Now fast forward 6 more months, and we have a energy audit and learn that the since the new furnace no longer uses the old chimney, and only the gas hot water heater does, this is potentially dangerous. I was told they should have done a safety check called CAZ (combustion appliance zone testing). Basically they orphaned the hot water heater as it was the only appliance connected to the chimney. Then we replaced the hot water heater and the plumber points out that they didn't put any covers over the PVC pipes on the outside and a child could easily drop a ball or small toy down the exhaust pipe (it's at child height) and that could cause a block in the exhaust! Good point, so for $2 we bought cover at home depot.
