Jerry Mannix was honest and responsive. His quote to replace the PTAC unit in my condo beat the competition by 1k and was specific about the model for replacement. They were able to install the unit the next day even.

Actually called within minutes of my request which shocked me for promptness. This was the Sunday before July 4th (Monday) to be clear and they came out the same day to talk and provide a quote!!! . I was impressed. They had a great price and installed the unit 2 days later. Perfect installation and no issues. Nice and cool all the time. They responded asap to a small service call issue a few years later and covered the repair as per their warranty with us. And this was in the hot summer season where it is often hard to get an AC out. We took priority because we were clients they warrantied or had installed a new unit. Perfect!
Description of Work: They came out on a Sunday after I submitted a website request for a quote for my dying AC.

UPDATE: OWNER RESPONSE CONTAINS MANY FALSEHOODS, including that (a) i "didn't recontact the company until 2/22." as noted below, i contacted them (BY EMAIL) a couple of weeks after service asking if anything else i should do and received NO RESPONSE. (b) i NEVER called the tech "stupid." as noted below, i (not he) actually removed excess water from the humidifier utube. i felt like i was teaching him something, but was nice to him. OWNER NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED THAT TECH DIDN'T ACTUALLY FIX PROBLEM BY REMOVING WATER (BECAUSE I ENDED UP SHOWING THE TECH HOW TO DO THIS). (c) i ultimately requested written communication with the owner because of his repeated misinterpretations. i NEVER asked him "how to bypass the safety system." he refused to clarify information which his tech provided and for which i paid. BOTTOM LINE: DON'T DEAL WITH COMPANY, ESP WITH UNCOOPERATIVE OWNER WHO REFUSES TO LISTEN AND IS INTERESTED ONLY IN COVERING HIS OWN A**. FIVE DAYS LATER, I STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED REFUND. COMPANY REFUSING TO CLARIFY ADVICE WHICH THEY INITIALLY PROVIDED AND FOR WHICH I ALREADY PAID. HAD TO FILE DISPUTE WITH CC COMPANY, NOW CONTACTING ANGIE'S LIST. SAVE YOURSELF THE PAIN!!! what's prompting this negative review is the subsequent series of deliberately unhelpful, difficult, nonresponsive communications from the company, PARTICULARLY ITS OWNER, WHO SEEMS PRIMARILY CONCERNED ABOUT HIS LIABILITY, RATHER THAN HELPING/EMPOWERING CUSTOMERS WITH INFORMATION/ADVICE FOR WHICH THEY ALREADY PAID. woke up one morning to find heat not working and thermostat off. mannix tech advised that humidifer drainage pipe outside my house had frozen, humidifier water backlog had tripped safety switch to turn off furnace. the tech was nice enough at that time -- though i felt like i was teaching him something by wicking out water while he was talking and talking, unclear to me why visit actually took so long. and i thought it was very tacky of the tech to tell me that his boss likes positive AL reviews and that i should write review if i liked what he did. but i let all of this go at the time. a couple of weeks after the service call, i emailed the company asking if i should do anything else (now that temps warmer, humidifier back on). no response. last week, i wrote to them that my neighbor's humidifier discharged directly outside their house and they weren't having problems. asked about very simple preventive maintenance that my neighbor was doing herself (for her house) and had suggested to me (e.g., cleaning the exterior pipe with bleach/hot water, vinegar/hot water to clean interior utube, etc). mannix refused to respond bc CONCERNED ONLY ABOUT THEIR LIABILITY, even adding that they wouldn't be responsible for other contractors' work (duh!). this morning, i simply sought clarification of the function of capped wires and alligator clip, WHICH PREVIOUS TECH HAD ALREADY GIVEN TO ME DURING $110 SERVICE CALL. owner called, initially saying that "neither he nor tech knew anything" about these wires. i told him that the tech had given me the alligator clip etc and just wanted to be reminded of when safety switch would be on/off, this had already been discussed during previous visit. owner then said he told the tech that he shouldn't have done this, citing liabiility concerns. more unpleasant exchanges with owner, who then claimed that the tech had drained water from the frozen line, that i was refusing their recommended solution (interior rerouting), etc. no response from owner to the following: (a) i didn't recall the tech draining water from frozen line (it was frozen outside), how did tech do this? (b) while tech was here talking (and talking), *i* repeatedly wicked the u tube to lower the water level in the tube (quite frankly, i felt like i was teaching him something, but i was being nice about it). (c) re: rerouting the drainage within my house, the tech and i discussed that if feasible, i'd prefer that this be done within my utility room (hook up the humidifier discharge to a plumbing pipe within that room), so wouldn't have to go thru finished dry wall to get to my washing machine. tech said that mannix would not be capable of doing that (not because not feasible, but because staff not trained in plumbing). (d) i restated that i just wanted to be reminded of information FOR WHICH I HAD ALREADY PAID, reasked my question about wires/capping (even rewritten in simple, binary terms). INSTEAD OF RESPONDING TO ANY OF THESE LEGITIMATE QUESTIONS/COMMENTS, OWNER ABRUPTLY ANNOUNCED REFUND AND REFUSAL TO PROVIDE FURTHER SERVICE.
Description of Work: diagnostic service call when thermostat/heat not working -- since then, COMPANY/OWNER HAS BEEN DELIBERATELY UNHELPFUL, REPEATEDLY NONRESPONSIVE TO DIRECT QUESTIONS, AND CONCERNED PRIMARILY ABOUT ITS OWN LIABILITY (RATHER THAN CUSTOMER SERVICE)

Response from Mannix Heating & Cooling
On January 10, 2015, we were called to this member’s home for a “no heat” service call. Upon arrival our tech found that a humidifier installed by another company was draining into the systems A/C condensate drain line. This drain line was routed to the outside of the home where it had frozen due to the extremely cold weather we were experiencing. We noted to the member that the frozen line was causing water to back up the pipe and trip an inline safety switch. The safety switch was installed to prevent water from overflowing and causing a flood in the utility room. Our tech shut the humidifier off, and with the help of the homeowner drained enough water from the pipe to reset the safety switch to get the heat working again. Since the utility room did not have a floor drain, our tech offered a permanent solution to the problem where we would install a condensate pump and discharge the water into a utility sink in the adjacent laundry room, at an additional cost. The homeowner asked if a drain could be installed in her utility room by cutting into existing plumbing pipes. Our tech responded that he thought it could be possible, but it would be best to contact a licensed plumber to perform that work as we are not currently licensed to do plumbing work in the state of Maryland (only Virginia). The member refused any additional work and said she was going to look into other options. Our tech told her not to use the humidifier until the weather warmed or the pipe was re-routed. We collected the service call fee of $109.95 and left the home. We had not heard from this member again until February 22, 2015. In which a series of 25 back and forth email exchanges were made where this member wanted to know why her neighbors didn’t have the same freezing issue, and she also requested information on how to jump out or rewire the safety switch on the system. She stated that our tech showed her how to do this when he was there. It was at this point that she started threatening us with a bad review on Angie’s List if we didn’t do what she asked. It was then that my employees brought this matter to my attention. I tried calling this homeowner and explaining that we don’t ever recommend removing safety switches from a system. She abruptly hung up on me and started writing additional lengthy emails through the message center. These emails included personal attacks where she called my tech “stupid” and told me I was “pigheaded”, in addition to making threats of additional negative on-line reviews. It was at this point that I stated if she wasn’t happy with our services, I would refund all of her money and it would be best if she contacted someone else for future service. As a small business owner I consider great customer service the lifeblood of my company, and my team will go to great lengths to satisfy our customers; our reputation is a testament to that. We are sorry that we couldn’t fulfill all of this members requests, and due to that reason, I thought it would be best to fully refund her money and she contact another service provider. Sincerely, Jerry Mannix

After purchasing our townhouse in 2012, I called Mannix for an estimate on replacing our boiler. Jerry Mannix evaluated the boiler and a/c unit and determined that neither unit needed immediate replacement but would within 2-3 years; mainly due to neglect. The boiler though ~30 years old could have lasted for many more years if it had received regular maintenance--oh well. In 2013 we had Mannix return to replace our A/C unit, air handler (located in our very small attic) and relocate ductwork. They did a splendid job. In 2014 Mannix returned to replace our boiler and water heater. Again, their work was top notch. We will continue to have Mannix maintain our systems by purchasing annual maintenance agreements until we move, and then I'll recommend their service to the new owners. Awesome employees; awesome company.

At first I was really pleased with the service. Not until the winter month did I encounter problems. The thermostat was set up for a gas heater mine was electric. I kept getting cold air instead of heat. 4 different servicemen came and none of them could fix the problem. I finally e-mailed the manufacturer of the Heating element. They responded within a day and promised to work with Mannix. It took two more service calls but it is finally working.

Mannix was very responsive and we were able to schedule an appointment the next morning after calling about an issue with our furnace. Pat was able to fix the problem quickly. He explained to me the potential issues with the thermostats we wanted to install, but gladly installed them when I told him we still wanted Nest thermostats. He even wrote down instructions in case we decided to remove them and return them later. I wish I could give him an A for punctuality, but even though it was out of his control due to weather he did arrive 2 1/2 hours late. I do believe Mannix' prices are high. I am new to the area and maybe $150/hour is the going rate, but this seems extremely expensive to me. Otherwise I was very happy.

They did pretty well but made a mistake in that they disconnected my water heater hood to get the unit in place. Then they did not reconnect it. It was leaking gas for a long time before I went downstairs and realized it was off. A friend fixed it but I asked them to come and recheck the work. The owner called about it. It did not seems as important to them and maybe it was no risk and I had over reacted. The problem is I felt they were not as scared about the mistake as I was. I ws looking for them to be much more "we made a mistake and we will fix it" but it seemed like they were "are you sure we did this?" They forgot I was the customer at the end. If you look at it overall - responsive yes, quickly getting the work done yes, the price was the same as most of the quotes I got, but it wasn't a slippery person selling it was more like here is what we sell and what it can do and I loved that. I think they are busy and that is why they made the mistake. I would say that this is not they way they normally work and I would recommend them.

The technician was super friendly and very helpful he diagnosed the problem super fast and my hubby had even broken something in the furnance while trying to troubleshoot. He was very knowledgeable and told us about potential future replacement needs. I also picked Mannix because I read through the review and I like the way they handled unsatisfied customers. They really seemed to try to make things right. When it is time for us to replace our furnance I will definitely contact Mannix I thought they were thorough, honest and fair and that's all that is important to me.

Due to certain space issues near my furnace, I had to go with a Steam humidifier (plus I liked this better over your typical bypass / evaporative kinds). I contacted quite a few HVAC companies listed on Angies and Mannix was probably the only one who was willing to install this and didn't try to sway me towards other kinds of humidifiers! Their price was right on par with a few others and much lower than a couple of others. They came on time and installed everything as requested. I had also discovered that there was no return vent on the 2nd floor (top floor) of my townhome even though there was duct already in place in the attic! They installed the vent for no extra charge! I liked the fact that they didn't try to nickel and dime me for it! I discovered some water leaking from the furnace vents a few hours after they left. This was because of some extension box the previous owner had gotten put in for a different humidifier & they had similar issues too. Mannix came back promptly, diagnosed the issue correctly and resolved it professionally. I have now had the Steam humidifier (Aprilaire 800) running without any issues for last 40 days and it does a great job maintaining the humidity level. The unit is a bit noisy when the water fills the canister, but I doubt anything can be done about that though (by Mannix or any HVAC professional). Overall, I am very happy with how Mannix handled the whole thing and I would not hesitate to hire them again and/or refer them to my friends.

We called Mannix after we had had Washington Gas out because we had smelled gas in the basement. Washington Gas reported that we had several leaks and that we needed to get them fixed before they could turn the gas back on. Mannix was very quick to send someone out (they arrived within 2 hours). The technician not only fixed the problem but took out a pipe that was unneccessary. They didn't charge us and were extremely professional and polite. We will definitely call them again (hopefully for something other than a gas leak!).
