Description of Work: I had called Katchmark back in May 2011 to get a price on their roof maintenance package. We wanted a thorough inspection of the roof from a trusted company and we were having mysterious leaks in our upstairs bathroom walls that were presumably coming from a leak in the roof. I called at that time, and they first told me that they didn't serve Bethesda, Maryland. I told them that that seemed odd to me since my uncle had used them and lived in Potomac, Maryland (which is farther from their location than Bethesda), and I mentioned that we had used their services at our old house in Washington DC. They then told me that their maintenance packages were starting at $475 but going up from there and that the price might be $750 or higher! Miraculously, they did serve Bethesda -- for a price. (Which seemed an exhorbitant rate given that our original roofer would charge $150 - $200 to get on the roof to clean gutters or make small repairs). Our original roofer however had fallen ill and his company staffing was in flux. We negotiated a price of $500 for the roof maintenance package (which is basically just getting on the roof and looking around -- since additional repairs are extra). I wanted the skylights checked in particular to be sure there was no leaking from there, and their package included resealing. I informed them that the roof was sloped, the basic sq. footage of the house footprint, what I wanted done, and that the house was two stories up from the ground. When we had difficulty scheduling a time for someone to come out, however, we did not finalize an appointment, but I said I would call back. Some time in late August/early September, I called back to get them to come out. On this second phone call, I spoke with someone and repeatedly explained that I work full time (and taking time from work was a major inconvenience), that I did not want someone to come out and look around with the expectation of sending out a crew on another day (i.e. that they would at a minimum do the basic inspection and resealing the same day they came out), and that we had an agreed upon price of $500 (not that this was a starting minimum) UNLESS they found unexpected damage that required extra work. I was ASSURED by the person on the phone that all of this was correct. I scheduled it for October 3rd and took off work, expecting the inspection to take 1-2 hours. They had told me that I had a 9AM appointment. After having rain all weekend and potentially rain the morning of the 3rd, I called in the morning, expecting Katchmark to cancel the appointment (because the roof would be slippery and possibly dangerous given the slope). When I called, I asked if they were still coming and was told the roofer would be at the house between 9-11AM. I said that I was not told there was an arrival time window, and expected a 9am arrival so the work could be done. She said she would have the roofer call me to discuss whether it made sense to come out. I received no call. When I called back again, she said that he was on his way (and would be here during the time window) but was not sure he would do any work. The roofer showed up around 9:30am, and immediately told me he had no intention of doing any work on the house and was simply there to look at the roof from the ground and give me an estimate. He told me that he never does work on his first visit. I told him this was in direct opposition to what had been promised to me on the phone. I told him that I already had an agreed-upon price for the work and that I was assured the work would be done today. He said he was sorry but no way he was doing any work today. But he would look around at the house before he left. He then came back and said they would do no work for less than $750, and I would have to call to schedule a day for the work to be done. When I told him that this violated everything I had agreed to on the phone he shrugged his shoulders and said I could find someone else to do the work. When I called the manager, she tried to tell me that I was lying. That they had never guaranteed me the $500 price (which is not true), and that they weren't aware of the slope (which wasn't true -- although it may be that they didn't count on the angle of the slope, even though I told them it was steep), and that they had never assured me of any of the things they had assured me of -- including that they would do the basic work at the same time as the roofer came out (which is the biggest of the lies). While I can understand that it's hard to know how steep a sloped roof is when someone says "it's steep", the communication between the office and myself was atrocious and completely misleading. The pricing it outrageous. At a minimum, I could have sent them a digital picture of the house and had these conversations over the phone -- instead of waiting 3-4 weeks for an appointment only to find out they would do nothing and carry out none of their promises. I am disgusted with the company. And the fact that they made no accommodation for their terrible service suggest that they are completely undeserving of a high rating on Angie's List or anywhere else.
