Description of Work: We chose California Closets because it is highly rated on Angie's List. Their sales rep Amy Fry, however, put the company and Angie's List to shame. We made an appointment for February 26, 2016, and all seemed to go well. She was engaging and said she could do everything, work miracles by fitting most of our closets' things from a 12,000' house into a 4,000' condo. There was no follow-up a month later, and in April, we contacted her to enquire about the status of her proposal. She finally informed us that her company had rejected our project and added that she had heard that we were "difficult clients" and that her franchise was "expecting growing pains," implying that California Closets could not take on such a big project at this time. We have never known a sales rep to malign not only a good potential customer and her company in the same breath. Given Amy Fry's unprofessional conduct, we have since signed up with one of California Closets' competitors. Amy Fry, unfortunately, also has put doubt in our minds about Angie's List's reliability.

Description of Work: Closets were of good quality, but service was very poor. Poor communication on scheduling. Poor follow-up on (relatively minor) concern with workmanship. Owner was just rude, which poisoned the whole experience. I would recommend going with another provider; the customer service experience surely would be an improvement.

They arrived on time and took accurate measurements. They had a great presentation of what the closets would look like after they were done. I would recommend them if the person purchasing them understood the closet were wall hung not floor standing. We were told they were going to be floor standing, but they were not. We were happy though overall with the work.
Description of Work: We had them design some closets for us.

It was a happy experience. She worked up several different graphic designs for possibilities. The graphics on the computer provided a great visual and understanding of the work to be performed. We found the price to be very fair. She was very good at advising us about the work and she had an aesthetic that I really like. She had excellent designs and is very knowledgeable in her field. We felt Amy did a good job. We will use this company in the future.
Description of Work: We hired them to create a study in our basement. They installed a closet, cabinet, and desk. She also installed an insert for my closet in my study.

Service fell apart at the end, and it seems to stem from the manager there. We contacted them to design and install a new home office, after seeing a great design in an ad. The designer, Jean, came out right away and very quickly (within an hour) had measured things and sketched out a plan that seemed good. Over the next 2 weeks, she was responsive about tweaking it. The plan came to $17,500, but we liked it enough to pay our 1/2 deposit, and wait the estimated 2-4 weeks for an estimated installation date of 11/7, a Monday. We were told they'd contact us closer to installation to schedule a time. Jean said that they install in a finished room, that is, all the painting should be done, the outlets and switches should be in place. The Thursday morning before, our contractor (who had gutted the room and rewired and drywalled it), said he'd like to leave early that day so he could leave Friday for a weekend away for his High School Reunion. That meant the room would be done maybe Wednesday (11/9), but more likely Thursday. No problem, I thought. I emailed Jean and asked to push the installation back a few days to Thursday. Later in the day (after the contractor was already gone), I received a terse email saying if we delayed at all from Monday, they would impose (as per our contract) a 10% and quot;cancellation feeand quot;, or $1750! We explained that we just needed a few days and had some back and forth emails and calls. We even offered to wait a few weeks to be put on the schedule later, so as not to delay anyone else. The and quot;bestand quot; the manager would offer was waiving the fee is we signed a contract to do another project, and put down another 50% deposit. Sheesh. Instead, I spent the weekend spackling, sanding, priming and painting, and was ready (barely) by 8am Monday. In all my years of working with contractors, I've never encountered such inflexibility. Needless to say, I wouldn't do another project with them. Too much can go wrong (sick kid? sudden work travel?) that could require last-minute juggling, and a 10% penalty is too steep.

Response from California Closets of Greater Washington DC
We have been using this contract and scheduling procedure for over 30 years. Our contract is written with a rescheduling fee as to not destroy our installation schedule. We cannot just move a customer to another day without disrupting the work already scheduled for that day. We most likely would not have the man power to move a customer without the proper notice. Our installation schedule is very tight and doesn't allow much room for movement. Because our product is custom made we are coordinating the fabrication of materials with the scheduled installation date. Therefore, we are not able to just call another customer and switch days as the materials for their job would most likely not be manufactured yet. What we ask for is a one week notice so we have time to see about rearranging our installation schedule to accommodate the new installation time. If we do not have some type of penalty nothing would stop the installation schedule for changing on a daily basis. So, stating that we are not flexible is just not the case. Given the proper amount of time (one week) we can almost always accommodate the new installation date. If we allow our customers to just move around without notice we would never be able to keep an accurate installation schedule or be able to keep our installers working on a consistent schedule.

We had a very difficult time with this business. We asked for a design of two closets in August and have had to negotiate many times to have them finished. It has been a very long and expensive process. Installers came to our house 4 times over the last 3 months. At this point, I am giving up. The designer did not provide good customer service. The designer was not responsive after my initial payment was made. The design that was installed did not have everything that was promised - and then we had to fight to obtain the missing items by making many phone calls and writing emails. The installers have also told us they cannot get in touch with the designer. Installation was no better. The installers destroyed our walls, even creating large holes in the pantry wall. And each installer has commented on the poor job done by the previous installer. In fact, our handyman was there when the final installer came and he questioned the poor work even as the installer was doing it. The installer said California Closets does not give installers the quality tools and materials that should be used. Installers blame the designer and the designer blamed the installers. Central management has also not been responsive, despite me sending them examples of my repeated email attempts. It is beyond frustrating as a customer.

I was very happy with the design and installation of the closets, as well as the quality of the product. I would definitely use their services again.
Description of Work: Remodeled 2 reach-in, bedroom closets. They removed the existing closet shelves and rods two days prior to the installation to allow for painting. I would definitely suggest you repaint the closet if you already have some type of closet system, because it is a much cleaner look.

They were outstanding. They would get A+ in everything. I would recommend them. They did superior work and they were just fantastic. They were professional. They came promptly, cleaned up and did an outstanding job. We had actually 8 estimates for that job and their price was not in the middle; but slightly above the middle. Their work was outstanding and superior. I have recommended them to my daughter and they were hired to do the job for them.

The company installed the closets and office over a 2 day period which included a Saturday - definitely helpful so we could be at home while they were there. The closets and office are amazing. My clothes have never been so organized and the design was tailored to my wardrobe including room for 40 pairs of shoes! I would definitely use them again!
Description of Work: California Closets installed 2 closets and our home office. Our designer, Jeanne Scott was extremely organized, professional, knowledgable and responsive. She sent us three dimensional designs for all of the projects a few days after our initial consult, and made tweaks and and changes in response to our requests. She was extremely precise and detail oriented and even my husband, who is an engineer, was impressed. She was a delight to work with.

Spent over 2 hrs as rep measured, designed, etc for closet and den systems. Promised an email quote w/in 2 days, almost 2 weeks later (after another call) received a voicemail that she was swamped but would have something soon. Called back, reminded her to email quote. She called again, left message that she had the quote and would come by when convenient. Called her again, left message that we wanted to see the quote via email as promised. Never heard from her again. We'll have the work done but NOT from this company!

The closets were finished in about four and a half hours. Richard cleaned up thoroughly and went over the check list with me to be certain I was satisfied with the work. He did a great job. The closets are perfect and functional.
Description of Work: Our design consultant, Edwin S., faxed us detailed renderings of the closet designs. The order was placed and work scheduled about a week later. Richard W. installed organized closet systems in the two closets of our master bedroom, one a walk-in and the other a reach-in closet. He called to say when he would be arriving, which was on-time.
