My Deck Guy

I searched everywhere for someone to restore my painted deck to a nice, semi-transparent stain that allowed the beautiful grains of the wood to show. The previous owners had just slathered on layer after layer of paint and the wood was splintering. Everyone else wanted to do similar applications, but John was willing to put in the elbow grease to do the job right and restore the wood to a more natural state. I am so glad we found him! He stripped the wood, sanded it, and stained it. He also removed a space-consuming built-in bench and placed it in a new place that gave us more room and a more finished look. So glad he suggested that change. We are now 1+ years out and just had him back to do a little yearly maintenance (tiny service fee) to keep it in tip-top shape for the many tiny feet that play on our deck. We are so pleased. I love finding someone that takes such pride in his work!

Jon and his team did a good job cleaning our large deck and then applying several coats of stain. We recently added a new section to the deck and they paid extra attention to ensure that section was thoroughly covered. When we noticed some problems shortly after the initial staining, Jon was quick to work with us to remedy the issues, free of charge.

I love how nice my deck looks now! I have a fairly large deck with lots of spindles, a set of stairs, a pergola and lattice around the bottom of my deck. Jon power washed my entire deck/stairs/pergola/lattice (took about 1/2 day), he spent a couple of days sanding down my entire deck project which was needed due to wood roughness and the previous owner doing a lazy multicolor stain job. He then hand stained my entire deck/stairs/pergola and spray stained my under deck lattice. I believe I contacted Jon in March and he had me booked after a couple of other projects for the end of May. Due to the weather being very very wet and rainy in 2015, my project got pushed to late June and took about 2 weeks to complete. Price also included the cost of the stain. Jon requested the cost of the stain to be paid before he started and the balance was paid at the end of the project. Book him early! He is worth every penny. I think email/angies list is your best method of contact with him.

Jonathan was a pleasure to work with. He gave us good advice on how to extend the life of our deck. He does not replace rotten boards so we hired someone else to do that work before he washed and stained the deck. He completed the work on our deck while we were on vacation. When we came home we were very pleased with the results.

It took time to get on the carpenter's schedule and then back on Jonathan's schedule but he always responded promptly my inquiries and came through on my one concern: Completing the deck before winter weather would damage the new wood planks. Because our two-level deck is all-new on the upper level, where it was too weathered to restore, and old on the less exposed lower level, Jonathan wisely suggested that we needed a solid deck paint rather than a clear or semi-transparent stain. And he suggested a color that would pick up the gray from our gray-blue siding. We were skeptical, but got a paint sample and realized he was right. Once we decided on the color he bought it the next day and did the work over the following two days. Our job ended up being more expensive than we assumed -- but that's because we had to spend $2,000 separately on the replacement carpentry. I would recommend My Deck Guy enthusiastically.

Jonathan met with us in person to discuss the job and provided a written estimate within a few days. We did not want the deck spray painted due to a negative experience from another company in the past. Jonathan assured us that he would hand paint the deck and would take care to protect the pond adjacent to it. Jonathan lived up to all his promises and has done a fantastic job in making our 25-year-old deck look like new!

Jonathan is amazing to work with. So professional, and easy going. We had a deck project that should have been done in a week, but with all the rain we had in June and July he could never get to finish the various steps. However, he was always telling us by email when he would be over and what the next steps were. We went through all the various stain products and he made suggestions for what would look best on our deck and play structure. I loved working with Jonathan he is very skillful and takes enormous pride in his work. The quality is superior and he makes sure everything is done right. I would highly encourage anyone looking to have any kind of deck work to contact Jonathan.

This is the second time that we have used Jonathan to clean, seal and stain our deck. We were impressed by the quality of the work from the effort years earlier, and based on the thoroughness of the job and quality of materials, it lasted many years without additional service. The job went very well. Due to weather, he was not able to begin the effort as soon as we had hoped, but once he was able to begin the job, he completed in a timely fashion. We have an ornamental pond and shrubs abutting the deck and he was mindful of any overspray into and onto them. He cleaned up after the job was completed and there was no evidence of the work, other than the nicely finished deck. Jonathan is very thorough and provides a great value for his service.

Jonathan did an excellent job with our deck. The cost of labor was $1,100 and the rest was for the stain / sealer. He spent a lot of time filing in knot holes and sanding down railings that had been damaged by various critters. He brushed on the stain, which resulted in a very nice finished product with no mess. Jonathan also referred us to a great carpenter that made some minor adjustments to the deck. The entire process (power washing, sanding, staining) took several days, but our deck is quite large and Jonathan covered every inch by hand. His estimate was only slightly higher than another estimate we received from a different company that would have sprayed on the stain. He wasn't able to complete the work right away, but this is a second job for him. It was well worth the wait, though, as the finished deck looks great! Jonathan is professional and courteous -- we're very pleased with his work.

Jon is excellent to work with. We have worked with a number of contractors over the past year, and Jon's attention to detail and commitment to doing good work is notable. He did a fabulous job staining our deck, and made some great recommendations on the products we should use. I have confidence that our deck will be protected for a number of years to come. He is easy-going, reliable, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Jon for any deck work.

We were/are very happy with Jon's work and results on our deck. I only gave Jon a B for punctuality because he is super busy and has a "day job" as well. That is not a reflection on the quality of service he provides however. In fact, I would say just the opposite, as some things in life are worth a little extra wait while he finishes up his previous job. Where as most of the larger companies would've just come in and sprayed stain on the deck (and likely the river rocks underneath of it) without taking the necessary steps and precautions, Jonathan does not do that. He does it the right way, all by hand and brush, multiple coats. If you can get him, I'd recommend him time and time again without hesitation. In addition, he is a VERY nice man!

We're very, very happy with Jon's work. We bought our house a couple of years ago, and it was clear that the previous owners had not been keeping up on deck maintenance. The boards were faded, cracked, and producing tons of splinters. After putting it off for a while, we decided to get our deck refinished this Spring. We contacted three service providers found via Angie's List to get an estimate. One never called us back. One kept us waiting for a while and eventually gave us an estimate that was more than twice as much as what Jon quoted us. So, it was an easy decision to give our business to Jon, and we're glad we did. It took a couple months between the initial estimate and completion of services, but I'd chalk that up to this being the busiest time of year and Jon being in high demand. Jon kept in close contact with us via email, letting us know when to expect him, keeping us informed on what he was doing, etc. Now our deck looks fantastic, water beads up on the boards, and my kids can run around on it in bare feet without having to worry about splinters. :)

Deck looks great (neighbor asked if I had a new deck) and the price was great . Due to the weather (those rainy week in June), it took a while to get the work finished, but he scheduled around the forecast and rain and insured that the product went on right and had the proper time to dry before the next rain. Labor cost was $650 and the rest was product cost.

The best way I can describe the completed project was it was done the way I would have done it. Jonathan and his crew performed each task as if this was their deck. The job had to be completed in chunks due to weather, Jonathan communicated when they would be at our house. He managed our expectations from the very first meeting. He went out of his way to make sure the work was completed to our satisfaction. He even power washed our siding above the deck saving me a Saturday afternoon of work. A key point for anyone wanting their deck stained, hand staining is the way to go and that is how this company does it. We had our deck stained 3 years ago and they power stained it. It was chipping within a week and we had stain everywhere. Thanks to My Deck Guy, our deck looks great, we don't have stain everywhere, and there is no chipping.

My Deck Guy was not actually able to assist me with my deck repair but did refer me to a great carpenter who was able to address my situation and leave a very astounding and lasting impression. I left a message asking that someone call me to arrange for an estimate to repair my deck. I never received a return call.

Arrived on time and was very courteous, cleaning work was throrough and complete.

My Deck Guy worked in very hot weather, was very responsive, and professional during the whole job. I am very happy with the deck and it's a pleasure tp be able to walk on the deck, in bare feet. Very happy.

He was efficient and meticulous in his work. We felt that he gave us a very fair price and honest feedback about the current state of the wood on our deck. We have already recommended him to family and will happily use him again in the future.

Because he was so busy, he could not complete this outside work during the working season this year.

All went very well. In spite of iffy weather at times, Jon informed us of every step of the process. He was helpful with color selection and did a great job hand staining the deck.

Would totally use Jon again, he took the time to sand down any problem areas and replace a few boards that had rotted. He did a fantastic job with the fence and deck stain and had a great attention to detail. I'd recommend him to all my neighbors and would use him again if the opportunity arises.

My Deck Guy was super helpful and very communicative throughout the process. The end result is beautiful! Even application, very clean and meticulous. Overall a great experience and I'd highly recommend this contractor.

Jon came out to look at the deck and then emailed an estimate. We were told that he would refund the cost of whatever sealant was not used. We were on his schedule within a week. We moved all of the plants and deck furniture indoors but the big propane grill and one large planter were too heavy to manage. He told me not to worry and indeed he moved them himself so that he could wash underneath these items. There were no splashes on the planter or grill cover. Jon provided us with a wide range of sealant types and colors. He wanted to do the sealing within two days but we had rain every day for over a week. He showed up on the first sunny day even though it was a Saturday. The only access to our deck is from inside the house but he used his own extension ladder to reach it. That was a relief because we have had some bad experiences with workers bringing their equipment up the indoor stairs and across the living room carpet to get out to the deck from indoors. Jon was very neat and professional. He does all of the work himself. We couldn't be happier with the result. The deck looks like new!
