The work went very well. We have used Growing Earth for tree removal several times now. They aren't the least expensive but for trees that are close to the house, we probably would not use anyone else. They are very careful and experienced. Their estimators are always polite, knowledgeable and punctual. We got the work done during the slow season so they gave us a 5% discount.
Description of Work: Cut down two large oaks very close to our house. Also removed a smaller spar tree that was further from the house and trimmed a hanging branch on another tree.

The crew arrived by 7:30 AM, and all were very professional. I spoke with one of the men and we discussed what they would be doing, addressing any concerns I had. Because the bucket truck had to drive across my yard, the put down plywood to protect the lawn. When they finished, we spoke again to make sure everything that needed doing had been done. The trees look good, and I’m happy to report that not a single branch came down during Hurricane Sandy.
Description of Work: Growing Earth Tree Care worked on two very large and very old silver maples behind my home. High winds and thunderstorms had taken down quite a few branches, and the deadwood needed to be cleared. Also needed to trim some extended limbs to reduce the weight. The job required a 75 foot bucket truck.

They did a great job and were extremely careful given that the tree was hanging directly over the roof of the house. We have found in the past that Growing Earth can be a little more expensive than other companies but in return they are very careful. In this case, the tree was dangerously close to our house so we went with them knowing that we wouldn't have any problems.

They recommended removing two of four trees and were quite expensive. We had two other estimates from arborists both of whom thought we could save the trees and both of whom came in with a lower estimate and less cutting - with no trees entirely removed. We did not use them because we wanted to save our trees if possible. So, we liked the way that the responded but we are slightly concerned that they wanted to cut trees and do more work than was necessary -- and they were quite expensive.
Description of Work: They provided an assessment of our trees and an estimate to do the work necessary to maintain healthy trees. They were professional and prompt and could do the estimate whether or not I was at home.

I had used this company once before for tree work and was very satisfied. I recommended them to everyone. Unfortunately my second experience was not so pleasant. In the winter snows we had several large trees break and fall, one actually hitting our garage. We managed to get that part cleaned up ourselves, but needed the big guns to take down the rest of the tree and several others. When I called it was a couple of weeks before I could even get an estimate, then it was 2 more weeks before they could actually schedule me. The day they came, it was raining and windy and I was surprised that they even came. After much debate on whether they could get all the trucks and equipment up here, they went ahead and brought the trucks up. Then they debated some more and decided that they couldn't do the work after all. So they attempted to back the truck with the chipper back down our 800 foot, very steep driveway. That didn't work out so good for the driveway that we had just had repaired in November. After another hour of fooling around they finally got their equipment straightened out and back down the hill. The part that really sealed the deal for me was that because they couldn't do the work that day, they put me to the back of the line for 2 weeks later. The estimate was also quite a bit higher than I would have expected for a repeat customer. The company I hired to replace them is working now with a lot less equipment and still getting the job done.
Description of Work: Needed 3 very large trees to be cut down and removed.

My recent work to tend to about 6 trees on my property was completed as agreed. Looks great!
Description of Work: I have used Growing Earth for several years now and have found them extremely helpful in annual shaping, thinning and treating the trees on my property as they grow larger. Think this has made a noticeable improvement in the appearance of my property and the health of my cherry trees and pines. Growing Earth provides truly professional service and followup. Easy to reach via email/phone, messages to let me know of service times and any potential delays, helpful advice to questions, clear and detailed estimates.

We've used Growing Earth for 7 years now and wished we had found them earlier. We have a 'wooded' property and value our trees - Growing Earth has always been honest in its' assessments of tree/treatment viability. The jobs are almost always 'perfect'. They've advised when a 'takedown' is uncomplicated enough for a 'smaller' company to handle so we can save $. That said, when we've used other companies, it's almost always been a disaster of some sort and we've had healthy trees damaged in the process. I recommend Growing Earth highly - as a Landscape Architect, and also as a home owner. Expensive -yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
Description of Work: Storm damage clean up and 'snapped tree' pruning; old oak deadwood pruning. They'll be coming shortly to do 1st treatment on hardwoods for borers, and also to do a complicated removal of a dead tree in a very 'tight' area near the house and other trees.

I contacted this company because they had removed a large ornamental pear from our front yard in 10/09 for $480. When we lost the other pear in the front yard in 2/2010 (same kind/size tree) during the snowstorm I called for an estimate for removal. They came promptly and e-mailed an estimate of $600. I e--mailed back my hopes that they might be able to meet our previous price of $480 given the recency of our work and our repeat business. I even inquired about an Angie's List discount. I never heard back. This was disappointing given our previous positive experience. I know they were busy because of the storms and the damage, but I don't think they handled the situation professionally this time. I gave them a "C" overall because they did previously provide good service.
Description of Work: Received estimate for tree removal from front yard.

Response from Growing Earth Tree Care
I want to apologize for the lack of response. That is not up to our normal and expected level of customer service. Occasionally, something will slip through the cracks despite the policies we have in place. With that said, we were extremely busy in the weeks after the heavy snow storms. We had crews working 7 days a week and we were trying to take care of as many emergencies for our clients as possible. Prices were definitely higher than usual because our costs were a lot higher. We had to cover crew overtime, plus the extra time every job took to complete due to the deep snow. Even parking our trucks was time consuming because roads were piled with snow. We often had to park a considerable distance from the trees and move brush and debris a lot father than normal through the deep snow. Our estimates are based upon the estimated time x the number of crew members x equipment necessary to complete the job. We are in a very competitive business, so we keep our prices tight. We do not build in extra cushion with the idea of then turning around and offering a discount. We try to offer the best price we can upfront. We do hire highly skilled arborists and spend a lot of time and money to continuously train them. We also equip them with the best and safest equipment we can. This can mean our prices might be higher than companies who don't go to such lengths. But we feel that the majority of our clients would rather we do the best job possible than to cut corners on either quality or safety. I hope you give us another chance in the future to care for your trees. And again, I apologize for our lack of response. I think you will find that to be the exception, not the rule.

They did a great job. I was a little worried, since the trees were so very close to the house, but they really did a professional job and had a great team. They came out and did a detailed estimate for us of all the tasks that needed doing. They worked with us to determine what needed to be done most (prioritized the tasks), and we worked out what we could afford to do. They were very flexible.
Description of Work: They removed a couple of very tall trees that were close to two houses.

The experience was excellent. We've had trees done before by various people and this was by far the best. They were really careful. They had plenty of help as well, there were like 8 guys that came out. They didn't go up the tree with spikes, they had ropes. They didn't hurt the tree in any way, they were really careful. You got the sense that they were doing this because they were trained not because they were just friends hanging out. It was really incredible. You might have to wait to get them because they have a lot of customers, but we know why now.

Very well. There was some scheduling delay because the company wanted Virginia Power to turn off the power to the house first because of the nearness of the power lines. There was actually an argument amongst the crew about the necessity for that, but it finally got resolved. Unfortunately this company schedules stump grinding separately from other tree work, so there was some delay in getting the stump ground up. I would suggest they coordinate the two jobs better and I was not notified when the stump work would be done, with the result that I left the irrigation system run the day the fellow showed up to do the work, and he had to postpone his work because his heavy grinding truck would have been going up my front yard steep incline and might have churned up the grass since it was so wet. So we had to wait some days before the second part of the job could be completed. However, I was only billed for work that had been completed. Also both crews were very good about clean-up. You could hardly tell they had been here at all. I would prefer that they take away the debris from the stump grinding, but that is not their policy (for reasons I don't understand). The prices were very reasonable (the best by far of the various estimates I had gotten for the work). The people who made the initial estimates and the ones who work at the head office were exceptionally helpful and courteous.
Description of Work: A very tall white pine was completely cut down and removed, the stump was ground up and 7 Leyland Cypress trees were topped off. A tree branch hanging over from a neighbor's property was also cut off (with his permission) so that new trees I am having installed get proper sunlight.

The home owner's association told me they had faxed over the work order to the company on the morning the tree fell. The company showed up by 1:30 PM on the same day. By 4:00 PM every trace of the fallen tree was gone except for a minuscule amount of sawdust. I couldn't even find any pine needles! They managed to get out the tree itself, and all resulting debris without any noticeable harm to the landscaped area of my yard.
Description of Work: This service was contracted through my home owner's association to remove a large pine tree that had fallen on my property from a common area. The tree was lying across my back fence, and into a landscaped area. The company removed the tree.

I was very pleased. The work was done in a very professional manner with minimal impact to adjacent planted areas.
Description of Work: They cut down two very large trees on our property. Both trees were cut into 18" lengths and stacked. (Wood can be removed if desired). All branches under 4 inches were chipped and left in a pile. (Again, it is optional to have this removed.) Both areas were cleaned up.
