We had our bathroom completely remodeled. The job took approximately three weeks. Buck and the Collins Tile crew were exceptional from the first visit to do the estimate, to the few follow up visits to finish loose ends. Buck was on the job by calling each evening to ask how we felt about the progress, and what we could expect the next day. We never had to wonder about the job and when we had questions we just emailed Buck and had an answer in very short time. He is the business owner we all want for any job. His foreman, Steve, was who we dealt with the most in person. He was here the majority of days and was responsive to every request and question that we had. During the demolition phase one of our pipes had a small leak, he came over at 11pm in the evening to seal it up and prevent any damage. All the workers were masters of their craft. They were ALL very courteous, on time every day, very professional, and most importantly, their work was top notch. It has now been about 4+ months since the job and NOTHING looks any different than when they finished. The tile job is superb! They did a great job of taking our basic idea of how we wanted our master bathroom to look, and making it look that way. The shower install, cabinets, new tub, mirrors, all of it went perfectly and looks GREAT. Small details such as making sure that light and electrical outlet covers were replaced properly, were replaced properly. Everything looks professional, there is NO amateur or half-quality work on this job. I would definitely use them again for future jobs, and they are WELL WORTH the money! John and Laura, Lorton, Virginia.

The bathroom is perfect. Buck sent me to suppliers that had excellent merchandise at reasonable prices to select products for the new bathroom. There were people there who really had great taste and I benefited from their advice. The tile surround for the tub is a basket weave tile which is beautiful and the floor tiles accent it perfectly. There were special projects like fitting granite counters to the cabinet base and making a shadow box cabinet in one wall which turned out beautifully. I am really pleased with the final project.
Description of Work: Buck Collins redid my upstairs bathroom which took about a month. His workers came every day until the bathroom renovation was complete; he did not go to our job and then go to another job and then come back after several days. He arranged to have the work completed in one month. His workers did a professional job and one of them had even studied fine arts in college so he knew how to help develop beautiful bathrooms.

This is a 40 year old small bathroom that was gutted. From start to finish took 8 days, and it was like a "well-greased wheel." All of the materials arrived at my garage the same day the crew arrived and they were inventoried which had to help in make the work go smoothly. They arrived promptly each day, were very professional in getting at their work and pleasant to each other as well as to my family. The owner (Buck Collins) has a list of vendors he has worked with and I would recommend using vendors from that list. We could not have been more pleased and I would imagine his kitchen work is just as good. We would highly recommend Collins Tile & Stone.

We contacted company for an estimate. Company owner Buck Collins came as scheduled on 31 July 2013. Within 24 hours we received a detailed work order and cost estimate to gut the bathroom, install new floor tile, enlarge the shower area, tile the shower from floor to ceiling and install new fixtures. Although our bathroom was small he estimated that work could not begin until early - mid October. Within 24 hours we received a cost estimate for the work. We accepted the bid and Mr. Collins provided the name of several vendors we could use to select our tile and fixtures. This process was accomplished without any problem due to the timely communication between the Collins firm, the vendors and us. All materials were received by the Collins firm except the shower doors before work began. The two panel shower door could not be ordered until the existing shower was gutted and it could be determined if the shower could be enlarged. I informed Mr. Collins in mid September that we would be traveling the first week of October. He told me mid October was looking good to begin. Mr. Collins informed us on 13 October that they were ready to start our job on 15 October and his people would be at the house at 7:30. They arrived as scheduled. They put down floor covering from the front door, up the stairs down the hall, into the bedroom to the bathroom. As soon as they pulled down the inside end of the shower and saw that they could increase the size they took measurements so the shower doors could be ordered. The Collins employees are professional and take pride in their work, they are as neat as possible and clean up at the end of the day, they are respectful of your needs they inform you ahead of time before they need to turn off the water but most of all they stay on the job until the job is done. We had a delay because we could not order the custom made shower doors until the size was determined. When the doors were ready Mr. Collins scheduled the installation,. During the installation the Collins employee noted a small defect at the bottom of one of the panels. He called this to my attention and said the shower can be used but the panel should be replaced. A new panel was ordered that day. Not that it was needed but Mr. Collins continually checked on the work either by stopping by or by phone. It was a pleasure to deal with this firm. If you want good work and good people to deal with call Collins Tile and Stone.

Worked with the company's designer, Tracy, to choose new tile for the shower floor. She was a great help to find replacements for out-of-production wall tiles and to choose new floor tiles and grout. Over three days the company removed the old materials, installed a custom pan, step, all tile work, and drain. The team was very professional and the tile work looked much better than the original shower. At the completion of the tile work, the glass subcontractor measured for a frameless glass enclosure and worked with us on the design details. The glass was ready after about two weeks and a new team came to install it. Installation was completed in a couple of hours. The final product looks great and has exceeded our expectations. The owner of Collins Tile & Stone made several visits to the work site to ensure that everything was going well and that we were satisfied with the work. I would use Collins Tile & Stone for future projects and would highly recommend them to others.

We are sorry that we were unable to take on the work in members high rise, and as she has stated, there are high rises whose restrictions we cannot work within although there are plenty of high rises where we have performed work. Each situation is different, and that determination is made when talking to each person inquiring. Member and I did leave messages back and forth, and while it may have taken a day or two for us to actually speak about her project, we pride ourselves on prompt follow up to every inquiry. I hope that member was successful in finding the right contractor for her project.

What excellent work! I had wanted my 2-car garage floor to be showroom quality and after doing much personal research into options, I decided to install ceramic (porcelain) tiles on top of the existing concrete floor. The floor had previously been painted with epoxy paint 15 years previously but the paint was flaking off. I got two estimates, one from Collins and the other from a more local contractor. I had also previously consulted a specialist garage redesign company successfully used by a neighbor. Buck Collins showed superb knowledge of the issues relating to tiling garage floors, even though he acknowledged his firm had not previously laid a garage floor. Not only knowledge but his manner and approach was most professional and I was able to consult his opinion on many questions I had. It was a tough choice between the specialist garage redesigned and Collins, particularly as the Collins estimate was higher. However, I felt that Buck was truly committed to making sure I would be satisfied and I chose them. I had designed the layout of tiles myself. Buck helped immensely in choosing the best tile to use, ensuring that the tile and grout would withstand the kind of use in a garage - accepting that oil, and other fluid drips will occur. The installation process involved grinding the existing paint off the floor and laying a waterproof barrier before the tiles could be installed. The workers involved always arrived on time, were courteous at all times and sensitive to issues of noise and dust etc. They also moved several cabinets and tables on and out of the garage each day as they worked. The tile installers were very skilled and not only followed the layout plan exactly but also adapted it as necessary to accommodate inexact edges. They also installed trim boards to fill gaps left by incomplete drywall work when the house was original built. Half way through the job I decided to change the grout color. Although they had already ordered the original, the change was made without complaint. The whole job took 5 work days. I couldn't be more pleased with the result. The entire experience was very professional; the work completed on time and any clean-up accomplished very nicely. I can recommend them very highly.

We have used Collins Tile & Stone previously for the installation of a stone foyer floor, and a kitchen tile floor replacement, and each time the results were great. So when it came time to replacing the old tile, etc. in our guest bathroom, we didn't even go anywhere else. Buck Collins came out, gave us an estimate, and although Buck may not be the least expensive guy around, you know that the work will be superior. Buck doesn't seem to ignore the small jobs (he does BIG homes, and ours was only a townhouse), and gave us his full attention. I can't say enough about Buck, and his team - they are responsive, professional, and do care about their work, but on to the bathroom... The tub was cast iron, old, and original to the house. It had to be broken up, and taken out, which was extremely arduous, and time-consuming. I can't imagine what they had to go through, but they did it. The tile work, as usual was wonderful, and they work fast. There were a few surprises - the tile for the tub/shower enclosure that we picked, came in darker than what we had seen at the tile store, and because it was darker, the decorative glass tile that we had also picked, did not match. We really couldn't live with that mis-match (this will be last time we re-do this bathroom), so we asked Buck to remove the glass tile that had been installed, which he did, and sent his designer, Tracy to find a more suitable deco tile, which she did. She emailed photos so that we could see it, and we agreed that the new tile would be better. We, of course, needed to pay for the new tile, but that's what happens when you like tile that has large variations in shading - this was certainly not Buck's fault. There was also an issue with the granite vanity top, which although it was a beautiful piece of granite, it did not work with the other tile in the bathroom, and we had to go with another piece. Buck did not charge us full price for the new piece, which I appreciated, especially since his guys had to take out the old top, and install the new one. I would not go with anyone else for any kind of tile, stone, etc. installation/replacement. They are the best! Our next project, which will now have to wait until next year, will be our kitchen backsplash. It's ok, but outdated, and I know Buck, and his team will do something wonderful for us.

The entire experience with Collins Tile and Stone was an exceptional one from beginning to end. Buck Collins responded promptly to our request for an estimate on remodeling our master bath/dressing area and a first floor powder room. The work was scheduled/completed within estimated timeframes and Buck and his office staff (Dana and Diana) kept in close contact with us both prior to and throughout the process ? Buck was on-site almost every day and the few days he couldn?t come he would call to check on things. Buck?s on-site crew was fantastic ? Steve and Sean oversaw the project and seemed to be able to do anything/everything that needed to be done. Keith, Kirk, and Eric were here at various times throughout the process and did an excellent job. Abraham and German did a beautiful job with the tile work and made great design suggestions. Fred Waning from American Shower and Glass installed a beautiful, frameless shower enclosure and Ermes from Copan Marble and Granite did a fantastic job with cutting and installing the granite for our countertops and shower. In addition, the other vendors Collins recommended (for cabinetry, plumbing, tile selection, etc.) were also outstanding. Everyone involved in our remodel was professional, friendly, and, most importantly, very knowledgeable. We would definitely use Collins Tile and Stone for future work and highly recommend them to anyone in need of the services they provide.

My wife and I highly recommend Collins Tile and Stone to anyone planning to remodel a bathroom. They were one of three contractors recommended to us by Architectural Ceramics in Alexandria, VA (a very helpful design resource and tile vendor). After discussing the proposed job with all three contractors and reviewing their submitted bids, we selected Collins Tile and Stone because of the high level of training routinely provided to their entire work staff, the level of Buck Collins? personal expertise, the detail contained in their proposal and the fact that Collins would purchase all selected materials and in doing so, would pass on the savings that resulted from their buying power with vendors. Collins Tile and Stone started the job on the agreed to date and conducted a complete inventory of all delivered materials. Buck Collins personally reviewed the schedule and what was to be done in a joint meeting with his foreman and myself. He discussed starting times, storage options for materials, and answered all our questions. During the job, Buck sent an email each evening asking us to identify any issues we might have. Each morning he stopped by to review progress, outline what was to be done that day, address identified issues, answer any questions we might have and introduce us to each workman that was to be there that day. Although I was at the house about half the time during the job, Buck?s diligence ensured that we were completely comfortable leaving the workmen in the house alone. They were respectful of our home, cleaned up every day and laid plastic on the floor wherever they walked. They were personable, helpful, respectful and trustworthy. But most important was the skill level of the workforce. They know what they're doing. They know how to solve problems. They know how to create a bathroom that not only looks terrific, but which will last for a very long time. If you want your bathroom done right, you'd be well advised to give Collins Tile and Stone a hard look. Collins Tile and Stone did a fabulous job on our bathroom and it looks terrific. We couldn?t be happier.

The job couldn't have gone more smoothly. Asbestos tiles had been affixed to the concrete floor so an asbestos abatement company had to do the demolition of the old floor. Buck and company came in and started work the following day, leveled the floor, installed heat mats, and then laid the porcelain tile. Buck and his team carefully explained what would be done at each phase of the project, answer all questions, and finished ahead of schedule. Buck kept in touch by email and phone throughout the work to make sure all was going well. The work was done very professionally, cleanly, and efficiently and the crew were pleasant and responsive to questions. Abraham and a co-worker were responsible for laying the tile and they did a beautiful job. The job was challenging because we were using 6x36 and 9x36 tiles, a task requiring experienced tile men for the job to come out right because the tiles are so long. I was a little concerned about picking out the best color grout to use and Abraham was very helpful in getting something that worked perfectly. The floor came out looking great - it looks really lovely - smooth and flat - everything we hoped it would be. Shawn came in afterwards and installed the 3/4 round and a transition between the tiled floor to a carpeted bedroom to finish off the job. He was very accommodating as to schedule, and came back a second time to replace a small piece of baseboard that had gone missing during demolition. Thank you Buck and thanks to your team. You guys are great to work with!

The whole process was very easy. When I called Collins Tile it was the middle of the summer and they were busy so I didn't end up getting Buck to come out for an estimate for a few weeks. When the time came Dana called me in advance to make sure we were still on board before the appointment and Buck arrived exactly on time. He was very knowledgable about tile and I felt very confident going with them. The electrician used for the lighting work was punctual, professional and his guys did a great job getting all the under cabinet lighting on one switch rather than the three switches another contractor said he'd have to do. Collins tile also had a carpenter on staff to help with the drywall repairs needed when the previous kitchen light was removed. The tile was put in the same day the carpenter came which was a great help in scheduling. In fact, the whole project only took 3 days - one for the electrician, one for the carpenter and tile install and one more for grouting. The Collins team was also very diligent about making the tile adjustments I requested. Furthermore, Buck was very responsive and always followed up to see how the job was going and make sure we were satisfied. I would definitely recommend them and would hire them again.

What a wonderful experience! We highly recommend Collins Tile & Stone. For the first major renovation in our 1980s townhouse, we did our research, got several estimates, and took our time selecting the tile, vanity, hardware, finishes, etc. While most cost estimates were in the same ballpark, Collins Tile & Stone set themselves apart from the onset. Buck Collins is very personable and extremely knowledgeable. He was able to provide recommendations in areas we were hesitant in and a vendor list from which to choose the key pieces of the remodel (i.e. tile, vanity, granite, etc.). The project manager and work crew were extremely professional, efficient, and punctual and cleaned the work area everyday. Perhaps most importantly though was their attention to detail. The quality and workmanship of the tiling alone was outstanding. Then to factor in the construction (finding water damage and leaks), installation, and finishing touches is why we will definitely hire Collins Tile & Stone again. In addition, the project came in on budget. Many thanks to all for making this such a pleasant experience!

This was the best experience we have ever had with a contractor. We were told what to expect every step of the way, including with emails in the evening summarizing the day's progress and previewing the work for the next day. The workmen were professional and highly skilled and were a pleasure to have in the house. They completed the work in seven work days, more quickly than we expected. They included steps that I had not seen before, and I am very confident that the new shower stall will never leak. They consulted with us each day to be sure they were doing exactly what we wanted, and they were open to making small changes when asked. There was much less mess than we have had in the past, plus they cleaned up very well each day. The bathrooms look beautiful - these guys are real tile artists.

We chose Collins Tile & Stone to do a complete remodel of our 40-year old small master bathroom in July 2013 and were delighted with the result. The existing shower was torn out, down to the studs and expanded to make it larger. All the plumbing and bathroom fixtures were replaced. Both the new shower and floor were beautifully tiled. The workmen had years of experience. They were professional, personable and courteous, and took care to see that the job was done right. Collins didn't take shortcuts and used premium materials. Buck Collins personally came by almost every day to make sure everything was going smoothly and on track. He also kept in constant touch via email providing us with status updates, so we always knew what to expect next. The project was completed on a tight schedule and within budget. The visual transformation was even nicer than we expected. We were satisfied with all aspects of our interaction with Collins Tile and would gladly work with them again on a future bathroom project.

Between November 2012 and July 2013, we invited roughly a dozen contractors to inspect our master shower for a reason as to why it was dripping through to the car in the garage. Most agreed that the problem was likely a faulty shower liner, and that the only fix for it was to demolish the existing shower and re-do the pan. Tearing out the tiled shower and having the replacement match the floor tile and the tile surrounding the tub presents a challenge. The entire bathroom had been redone in tile 4 years earlier by the previous owner. It looks nice, but the work was performed by someone that shouldn't?t be doing tile work, and with materials not suited for the job. Among the errors were: grout used where silicone should have been used; cut tiles with the cut side exposed to water; horizontal tile seams on the curb beneath the shower door; and improper compound used between glass blocks. Most of the contractors we called fell into one of three categories: they either didn?t return calls; said they wouldn't touch the job because they couldn't put it back the way it looks now; or quoted a price so high that we could have redone the entire bathroom. Collins Tile and Stone inspected the job and agreed that re-doing the shower would be the best thing to do to correct the errors made by the previous installers, but that patching the more catastrophic errors could buy us enough time to plan for a more long-term solution without losing use of the space. We took them up on that offer, and in less than a day, they removed the stress-cracked grout from the troubled seams and sealed the areas with more forgiving silicone caulking. We were using our shower without trouble as soon as the caulk had cured. Buck and his team were sensitive to the expense and risk involved in tearing out a troubled shower in a ?done? bathroom, and offered a solution that would allow us to use the shower while planning and budgeting for a proper renovation. We?ll call him again when we are ready for that job.
Description of Work: Repaired leaking shower tiles installed by another contractor when everyone else told us a complete tearout must be done.

The total experience with Collins from start to finish was highly professional. Our primary goal was to somehow repair the floor tile in a 40-year old shower without a complete tear-out and replace. We had discussions with other tile installers with recommendations ranging from -- "it can't be done" to "you are looking at a $20,000 bathroom renovation". Mr. Collins' approach from the first time he saw the bathroom was much more like -- what are your objectives, what do want to accomplish and how can we best meet that. He came up with an innovative solution others told us would be impossible and connected us with an outstanding tile supplier/designer who created a unique design that almost exactly duplicates the original design (a combination of small tile shapes and colors). Installation was completed without a hitch in about 2 1/2 days and we couldn't be more pleased with the end result. In the same initial visit, Mr. Collins also developed an approach for installing a backsplash in the kitchen of this 40 year-old house. Again, Mr. Collins directed us to the same talented tile supplier who produced a design within our modest budget that we are extremely pleased with. It gives the "overall look" of the kitchen a much more pleasant and updated feel. Installation by Mr. Collins' team was again accomplished very smoothly within the same 2 1/2 day timeframe. It was a pleasure to work with the entire Collin's team - from Mr. Collins, to his wife who keeps all the schedules and makes things run smoothly, to the team leads and installers who are in your home (and yes, are in your way in your master bath and kitchen). They were all totally professional and respectful in addition to being very skilled and taking the extra effort to produce an excellent result. For example, during the actual installation process, one of the team mentioned that he thought there was a different grout that might be better (color and performance) and arranged to get some delivered so we could evaluate it. They were very careful about controlling dirt/dust and clean up at the end of the job and lastly, they were very pleasant and as unobtrusive as possible. They would be my first choice for any similar job in the future.
Description of Work: 2 jobs accomplished at the same time -- installed new floor tile over the old tile in master bath and installed fairly complex tile back splash in kitchen. Total cost of both projects was about $5,000.

Buck Collins and his crew fit us into their busy schedule on short notice to accommodate our accelerated move-in date. We were very familiar with the work of Collins Tile and Stone, because they rebuilt two bathrooms and a powder room and put in a new kitchen floor for us at our former residence over the past six years. Every job was skillfully executed, on time and on budget, so we knew we wanted Buck's crew back to put in a new kitchen in our new home. Buck arranged to have a kitchen designer, Stephanie Steele, come out to look look at the old kitchen. Stephanie worked with us and had good ideas to improve our original renovation concept. At her suggestion we moved the sink, which had been facing a side wall, to a spot under the pass-through, so we could look into the dining room and out the large window beyond when working at the sink. She also suggested an island with a beverage fridge and a place for two bar stools. Although I thought the space too small, it turned out to be a brilliant idea after Buck's crew put it all together. The work: A new porcelain tile floor, new cabinets, new appliances, new sink (at the new location), a repositioned pass-through (the existing one was too low, making it difficult to see and talk with people in the other room while working in the kitchen), an island, new granite counters, a stone backsplash, new electrical and plumbing. Buck's crew also knocked out the existing bulkhead and rerouted duct-work to accommodate our taller cabinets. Collins Tile and Stone performed the vast majority of the work, subbing out the plumbing and electrical to skilled professionals they work with regularly. All the work was well done and done on time. Buck's crew was neat and cleaned up the worksite each day. They were friendly and flexible, making adjustments and coming back to perform additional work we decided to add late in the project. They also established a good relationship with the condo manager and were always conscious of the other residents, keeping their noise to a minimum. I will use Collins Tile and Stone again when I'm ready to renovate the bathrooms in our new place. I recommend them highly.
Description of Work: Tore out old kitchen in condominium and built new one. Price includes everything -- floor, cabinets, granite countertop, new appliances and all work.

My experience with Collins Tile and Stone was exceptional. I have never had the pleasure of working with a company that exhibited the knowledge, workmanship, and professionalism that I experienced with Collins Tile and Stone. Buck arrived on time for the initial consultation and he provided a detailed estimate shortly there after (within a couple of days if memory serves). His technical knowledge was impressive and his responsiveness to my email inquires before and during the project was, in most instances, virtually immediate. He would call or email at the end of each work day to ensure the job was progressing as we expected. Buck genuinely cares about your satisfaction and really wants to make the customer happy. The first day of the job the project manager went over the project with me in detail. The crew was meticulous in their work and their attention to detail was incredible. The crew cleaned up at the end of each work day and they kept dust at a minimum. The bottom line is that the crew was top notch and their work was phenomenal. Overall Collins Tile and Stone is a superb company that embodies the old adage "the customer is always right". I will definitely be contacting them in the future, and would not hesitate in recommending them as a contractor.

He was on time, had good ideas and was in contact with answers to questions. But the bottom line was shocking!!
Description of Work: Mr. Collins is a charming and delightful person with broad knowledge and good problem-solving skills. He took a great interest in the job and made valuable suggestions on accomplishing the things I wished to happen; however, his labor price was out of line with other estimates I received. Maybe he pays his workmen more than others and maybe they are the top-of-the-line, but for a 5 x 7 bathroom, he was almost twice a much as the contractor who is doing the job.

Response from Collins Tile & Stone
Any review we read on Angie's List that is less than straight A's is a concern for us, as Collins Tile and Stone aims to please every customer, in every way. Sometimes, this is simply not possible. I appreciate that Member has indicated the professionalism, expertise, and quality of installers we emploiyee in her post. The fact that she did not like the bottom line price, or that our estimate was almost double of someone else's is not a reason to grade our price an "F", or to give us an overall "D" in our opinion. There are many contractors out there, with varying degrees of expertise, level of quality installations, and service, as well as pricing structure. The comparison of price is relative to many other factors. We are not certain of the credentials of the contractor who is performing the work, but perhaps what they provide, and what we provide are not a true "apples to apples" comparison. I would encourage other Members to read through the 73 "A" reports we have on Angie's List, where the work was actually performed. These members have experienced the level of service, communication, and have a completed project that they are very happy with. Collins Tile and Stone is an NTCA 5 Star Contractor (more can be found on this at www.tile-assn.com), all of our lead mechanics are Certified Tile Installers, certified by the CTEF (Ceramic Tile Education Foundation), and we follow TCNA (Tile Council of North America) guidelines on every installation. Buck Collins, President and Owner of Collins Tile and Stone, serves on the Board of Directors for the NTCA (National Tile Contractors Association), as well as on the Technical Committee for NTCA, and is a Regional Director for 6 states. His technical knowledge in the industry is very respectable, and this shines through in the installations we perform for our customer base. We have hundreds of satisfied customers, and regret that Member was not satisfied with the price, and felt we deserved a failing grade because of that. Members look for different things when hiring a contractor. Some base their decision solely on price, and other look for knowledge, expertise, and a quality installation. Our goal is to satify all of our customers, and work very hard to do that. I am sorry this Member was not satisfied with our price.

Buck Collins and his team run an incredibly professional operation. They are probably the most responsive and professional contractor we have ever dealt with; first rate all the way. Buck quickly responded to our request for an estimate. It was a detailed and accurate estimate, and Buck gave us a schedule we could count on and met our needs. It was a two-day project that went very well. We are extremely pleased with the results; what a difference it has made in the appearance of our kitchen. We highly recommend Collins Tile and will be using their services again. They have earned and fully deserve the high ratings on Angie's List. Hire them; you will not be disappointed!
Description of Work: Collins Tile installed beautiful backsplash tile in our kitchen. They did a fantastic job from start to finish, and we look forward to hiring them again soon to do a complete master bathroom remodel.
