My husband and I bought a fixer upper in Arlington County that had a very odd and frustrating floor plan. We spent weeks trying to figure out what to do to make the house's floorplan make sense when we finally called Mr. Buford for assistance. Mr. Buford came to our home for a consult. He did a walkthrough and sat down and discussed what we wanted with our home. He was very knowledgeable about Arlington County's zoning and building code and architectural design. He was able to come back to us with a design of our home that complied with County regulations, would not break the bank to build, and best of all had a design that made sense. While working with him, he was very professional and responsive. His turnaround time was also very quick. One additional validation for Mr. Buford, when we visited with Arlington County to discuss our project, the staff member we worked with recognized his name and said he was a very thorough, "by the book" professional. We felt very comfortable with the quality of his work. In addition we also found his pricing to be very reasonable. We would highly recommend working with Mr. Buford for anyone who has a remodeling project.

They were prompt and took proper time to see what was wrong with the house but, based on our talks I would not use that company. Their pricing was a little high and I will not use them again in the future.

Response from TBBuford
I was paid more than I asked for, at Member's insistence, with gratitude and the understanding that I would be coming back to continue with other projects. I have tried three times to follow-up with Member on starting the list of projects that was developed April 26, 2011 during my first site visit. I have never gotten a response to my email sent April 27, May 11 and June 17. (?) I charge by the hour so I'm not sure what pricing is considered high - it was acceptable when I first came out. If Member wishes to continue work that can be arranged.

Everything that Thomas has repaired for me--and he has repaired quite a few things over the course of the past five years--has stayed repaired. I know I can count on him when anything goes wrong and he will be there to help me deal with the situation. I have used other handymen services in the past and none of them came with the attention to detail and the effective results that Thomas' services do. His skills--both professional and analytical--are wide ranging and the results solve the problems his clients have presented to him.
Description of Work: Thomas has worked for me about five years doing home repairs. He has a lot of construction knowledge and will tell me when he can and can’t do something for me and often gives me choices I hadn’t considered. He works to come up with solutions that are effective for me regardless of what common practice may be. His first job for me was to repair a rotting beam over the door to my shed. In the process he found more rotten lumber and the reason why the shed was having problems to begin with. By the time he had finished the work, he had repaired the framing, changed half the roof to plastic that let light in and installed flashing and finally reorganized the work area and tools so I could make better use of it for potting and storage. While he was working on my shed I told him about water around the house and the leaks in the basement. My house is old (1939) and even light rain flooded the basement. I had leaks on all four walls and they seemed to leak independent of each other. I had a basement-waterproofing contractor give me a price for $15,000 for a foundation drain with an interior sump pump. Over the course of months Thomas had me doing field observations when it rained and helped with with site grading, the whole time working around my anxiety over costs. In the end Thomas suggested I do a partial foundation drain with exterior sumps. Typical of doing what is required he even helped relocate the extensive plantings around the house where the drain was installed. The solution was tested when the hurricane blew through Virginia. I now sleep when it rains with the safety of knowing that the problem is solved. Since then it has been attic fans, door handles pulling off, a Wisteria trellis that was failing, fence repairs, firing the gutter cleaning company and getting my money back after finding trees growing the down spout, getting a new gas range to fit after the Home Depot installation failed, repairing some failing roof sheathing, painting wrought iron railings, rot repairs to a window and the front door, and assorted landscaping projects. Thomas is reliable and trustworthy. He has a key to my house so that he can come and go if the need arises and when I can’t be there. His billing is fair, and he is willing to work with my limited resources. He is very thorough, ensuring the goal has been accomplished before he considers a job complete. He is an excellent consultant, providing me with advice on home maintenance before I spend money. All in all, Thomas has been a great resource for me and I recommend him highly. Should anyone want more information, I will be happy to provide it. Thomas can be reached at tbbarch@yahoo.com.
