They did exterior painting for me on one side of the back of my home. They were fine. They did everything on time and he brought 2 employees with him to do the work. It took a little longer so I paid another $320.00 and they told me that price upfront.

One painter came out to do the job. He had no transportation, had to take the bus, and only came with a brush in his hand. He didn?t speak English very well, he didn?t have access to water so the caulking he did was a mess. Mr. Mendez's philosophy he will have one employee comes out to do the work, because he wants to know who was responsible if anything went wrong, which there were and there was no consequence. The painter was incredibly slow. He did an okay job, but when it was all finished, I?m not sure what exactly what he did. I paid him for supplies and the whole process took about 2 months. I was emotionally rung out by the time it was done. He set the area to protect everything while he sprayed, but he didn?t even have a respirator or mask while he was doing that. All he had was a handkerchief. He did get paint on our screens and windows. There were areas that he did not paint well either. He even spilled bleach on my deck too. The paint had seeped through the paper on the deck and I paid for the high end paper to protect that. All the supplies I purchased, they took the extras with them. Even though I told them to leave everything and the job was not completed. I wanted to know what he would do about the floors, he said he could clean it up, but at this point it was 6 weeks out and I was leaving for vacation and he told me he would do it when I came back. I went ahead and got someone else to do the job for me. On vacation, he kept sending me emails asking me when he was going to be paid and I was paying him when he handed me receipts. He doesn?t keep any copies of the receipts and he pays his guys cash. I then just told him he can end the job and I would pay the minimum that I owe him. I found out that he fired the painter in the end, but it didn?t do me any good. He kept no records, everything was in his phone and he paid his employees in cash. To me it was not reputable for a company. We had a lot of miscommunication too. The painter should have been supervised. Nobody helped him out, gave him equipment or checked on his work. It ended up costing me $2,000 more than it should have and I still have to pay someone to clean up some of the mess-ups.
Description of Work: I was disappointment with the deal. He was a very nice man, he came over and walked around the porch that I was having enclosed and I needed the inside and outside painted. The man who did the construction work, was a friend and had to leave before finishing. Mr. Mendez had a fabulous carpenter that he recommended and finished the job for me. I added on some more work for them to do as well.

Communication with Mr. Mendez is difficult due to his broken English. Not impossible, just difficult. He never provided a contract to sign. We verbally agreed to the amount of work his company would do with the 40 hours of labor I purchased. The first day two workers showed up but not the owner Mr. Mendez. I had to show them what needed to be painted. Hard workers, respectful of my property and belongings. Prepped and painted some of all the walls but didn't finish anything that day. The second day, a different worker showed up, the first two did not. The second worker said he was told to work at my home but was not given any details about the job. I had to show him everything all over again. I called Mr. Mendez to find out why I was getting a new worker and was told the first two were needed on another job. Not happy with the answer but had to get the painting finished. As it turned out this new worker, Edgar is a fantastic painter. Very organized, respectful and tidy. He insisted on finishing one room at a time and putting it back together so we could use that room again. He worked at my home for the next two days. Can't say enough good things about Edgar. I would allow him to work in my home unsupervised any day. On Saturday another worker of Mr. Mendez arrived to install my new front door and storm door. Hard worker but didn't finish completely. He also broke some of the storm door parts. The parts were covered under the manufacturer warranty so all turned out good in the end. Mr. Mendez had to return with another worker the following week to adjust the main door and finish the storm door. Painting quality is good. Door works as it should. No complaints there. The only issue I have is the difficult communication between me and Mr. Mendez.

I am very pleased with both the performance and results. I originally bought 40 hours worth of painting through an Angie's List "Big Deal" in late June. I asked Diomedes to come out and help me figure out how much and what kind of paint I would need, explaining at the time that my schedule wouldn't allow for the actually work to be done until the early fall. Diomedes came out right and we discussed what I would need. Subsequently, my plans changed. I rather embarrassedly requested in September that Diomedes come back out to talk about my new requirements. He was very accommodating. His crew (of one) arrived exactly on time every day and did an excellent job, regularly asking me to check how he was doing and whether I was pleased with his progress. Together, we found a few minor areas which he quickly remedied. He was good about cleaning up each day. The last day, Diomedes came himself to touch up a couple of areas. In all, I am very pleased with the result.
Description of Work: Painted the upstairs hallway, the stairwell between my first and second floors, the living, dining and main bathrooms. Before painting, the painter scraped and re-plastered a number of areas and filled in nail holes.

Mr. Mendez and his painters did an Excellent job painting my home. I discussed what I wanted painted and he advised what type of and how much paint I needed to buy. His team arrived on the date and time agreed upon and in two days they had completed all the work I had requested. They painted the home's exterior porch railings, shutters and doors as well as four bedrooms and their closets, a hallway and stairwell. The work looks beautiful! I will definitely use Mr. Mendez's services in the future when I need to have the basement dry-walled and painted. I highly recommend him!!

Diomedes Mendez Painting provided excellent service with a very professional crew, and will have him do other work on my house in the future. I had a very small time frame for painting, but Mr. Mendez was able to accommodate my schedule. During the estimate he helped me choose paint colors and I am in love with how they look! He has good taste and knew what I was going for. A crew of 3 guys was sent out who were very nice, and I didn't have any communication issues. Mr. Mendez came by several times to check in on their progress. I stayed the whole day. The guys called me in periodically to see the progress and make sure I was happy- which I was. The drywall in my house was hung in the 1940s, so there were several spots that needed repair. The patches were excellent. Thanks to the repairs and beautiful paint, my walls look like new! The project took two days. Overall I am very happy with the final product! I'll be hiring him again in the fall to put in a patio and a tile backsplash.

The job was done with great care and the result was terrific. I contacted Diomedes because of the great reviews he received on Angie's List. I was very surprised to see the latest reviews that have appeared this past week because they were nothing like our experience and we would definitely hire Mendez painting again. I'm sorry for those who had a less than positive experience. Maybe he had an especially difficult week lining up painters for the work during this time. The painter he sent us (Edgar) spoke good English, was very professional and polite, on time, trustworthy and cared about what he was doing. Both Diomedes and Edgar wanted to make sure we were "happy" during the entire process. To be sure, I can see where some of the issues regarding communications, could be problematic, especially if the job involves complex instruction. If\when I have more work to do, I will request Edgar or someone he (Diomedes) considers one of his best painters and ask for a quote using that painter (basic rule: you get what you pay for). It's clear to me that Diomedes is trying very hard to improve and expand his business and that he understands that customer service is vital to his success. It may take a little effort on the communications side, but If you are willing to work with him, I believe you can get a very good result for a very fair price.
Description of Work: Painted 2 rooms (walls, trim, stair stringers, ceiling) in finished basement and replaced baseboard in certain areas after we had water damage. Also painted kitchen walls and laundry\utility room upstairs.(The cost stated above includes the price of paint\baseboard which I paid for separately --about $160 for paint and $85 for baseboard--but they picked up and delivered)

As the owner of victorian townhouse built in 1892 I am very picky when it comes to work done on my home in the Historic District of Old Town Alexandria. That, coupled with my having worked for a Residential Renovation firm for a few years and skilled in drywall/plaster repair and painting -- I probably am a contractor's worst nightmare in that I demand a very high level of quality workmanship and professionalism. I am extremely pleased with the work Mr. Mendez's firm provided. The prep and painting done by Harry was excellent. As with most projects, sometimes things do not go as well as they should. Harry was to do the interior work while another man was to do the exterior work. The interior progressed beautifully but there were problems with the exterior such as inadequate prep and repair, using gloss finnish instead of satin finnish paint on the trim, painting the brick wall over the property line and onto my neighbor's unpainted brick rear wall (ours are mirror image homes built at the same time). I sent Mr. Mendez an email as soon as I got home from work that day describing the problems with the exterior. He immediately replied he would come the next day to see the problems and fix them to my satisfaction. In that regard, Mr. Mendez is a consummate profesional and he personally saw to it that everything was fixed and would not stop short of my being completely happy with the work. It was a pleasure to work with him -- and that really is the how the contractor/customer relationship should be in home repair/renovation projects.
Description of Work: Interior drywall/plaster repair and paint 4 walls and a ceiling. Carpentry repair and sash cord replacement on 4 wooden double-hung windows (120 yrs old) and paint. Caulk crown molding of floor to ceiling bookcases. Prep exterior windows, windowsills and casements – repair wood as needed as well as missing/deteriorating glazing compound. Prep and paint back of home brick, windows, downspouts, cellar door and window flower box.

In hindsight, I guess I should have anticipated problems. The only contact I had with the owner (prior to the work being attempted) was through email. I would ask direct questions about the materials I was required to supply and he would send back odd responses that did not answer my questions. Strike 1 On the morning that the work was to begin, 2 workers showed up at 8:00 all smiles, but without a ladder (as I had requested in an email) or any type of scaffolding to reach the top of the stairwell and no DIF or any other chemical to help with the stripping. Strike 2 They did a fine job preparing the spaces by covering the stairs and upper hallway with tarps and plastic and one worker tried to use plain water to begin stripping the paper, but unfortunately he began in the upstairs hallway rather than the stairwell which was the most important area. I was told that someone was going to come with a ladder and the DIF soon. In the meantime, I let them use my two story ladder which is too heavy for me to lift alone so I forgot I even have one. At approximately 9:30 the owner showed up with a gallon of DIF but no ladder or scaffolding. I told him that the people who put up the wallpaper many years ago had a long sturdy board that they stretched from the top of the stairs to a rung of the tall, upright ladder. This was used as a relatively level plank to walk on in order to easily access the entire stairwell area. He said he has a board like that at home. Should have been Strike 3 The owner spoke to the workers (I assume he was prioritizing the duties of the day) and one worker picked up his backpack and left the house. I don't speak Spanish so I don't know what was said, but there were obviously issues going on. The owner went out and must have spoken to the worker, because the worker came back in, apologized, and resumed the drywall repair--not stripping the wallpaper. The owner stayed until approximately 11:30. We discussed how difficult wallpaper is to remove. I have stripped quite a bit of wallpaper in my life and am well aware of the difficulties. I'm tired of stripping wallpaper. This is why I hired a professional company to do the remaining 3 areas of my home. He recommended that rather than remove the paper, they should either paint over it or remove the drywall and crown moulding and replace it. I've never heard of such a thing. He had one worker stripping the paper, and had to tell him to use the chemical. There is no way this person had ever stripped wallpaper before! Knowing the clock was ticking and I was paying for each hour and needing the job to be completed, I put aside my plans for the day and began helping out. So much for professionals! Before he left, the owner wanted to know if I thought I needed another day (of workers). Not knowing yet how much or how little would be accomplished on day 1, I said probably for a few hours more. The owner said no, it was either a full day or not at all. He needed to know for scheduling purposes. How I wish I had said no! The other worker must have been assigned to the 3 areas of drywall repair because that worker only helped us strip paper for the last 30 minutes of the first day. Not sure why 3 drywall patches took 7 and a half hours or why he didn't help us in between coats of mud--while waiting for each coat to dry. At the end of the first day, the drywall patches looked good, but the worker on stripping detail had only stripped approximately 10-15% of the stairwell walls. Day 2: Different workers showed up to strip the wallpaper. I was relieved at first hoping they had more experience and would be able to work more quickly so at least the one area would be completed. They did seem a bit better and quicker at it than the one worker on Day 1, but not by much. I did not help on Day 2--instead I went to the basement and painted an entire bedroom. Occasionally I would go up and check how much progress was being made and unfortunately it did not seem like much. At approximately noon, only about 40% of the stairwell had been stripped. Finally at about 2:00 I called the owner and told him that they were not making much progress. He asked if they were working hard. I told him I didn't think so but I don't babysit adults. I reiterated again that all I wanted was the stairwell stripped and that I was not going to pay anymore money. He said he would call them and tell them they were not to leave until the stairwell was finished. However, at 6:00 they started cleaning up. I asked them why they were cleaning up because the work was not finished. They said they only work till 6:00. Apparently the owner must have told them to work 2 more hours. They called him to confirm that they could leave and they said that he was coming to finish up. They had about 80% completed at this point. About 7:30 the owner arrived, looked at what had been accomplished and asked me if I was pleased. Since the job was not finished he wanted to know if I wanted more workers for another day. I said I was NOT going to pay any more money so NO. He had someone waiting outside and called that person in. The two of them continued working for approximately 1-2 hours but I'm not sure they used enough water, sounded primarily like scrapers being used and when they stopped working I noticed tremendous damage to the walls. At this point, about 90% of the stairwell is stripped and there is extensive damage to the walls. Please realize that out of the 32 labor hours I paid for, 24 of them were spent on wallpaper removal for only 3 walls in an average/normal stairwell. That should have been enough time for professional wallpaper removers to complete that 1 job--even if the wallpaper was hard to remove. From the reviews on Angie's List, it appears that this company does a good job with painting and patching holes in the drywall, but not wallpaper removal. Wish I had realized that before I hired them for my #1 project of wallpaper removal. The owner's business card does not list wallpaper removal as one of the services they do, so I don't understand why they are allowed to list it as a professional service on Angie's List. They clearly do not care for doing it. This has truly been one of the most exasperating experiences I've ever had with workers. I don't understand why a professional worker would attempt to walk off a job, why a professional company would not bring the correct materials when the workers arrive (such as a ladder or scaffold, and stripping solution) especially since it was clearly stated in an email weeks earlier. I don't understand why the workers started in the hallway when I made it known that my priority area was the stairwell. I don't understand why it was my responsibility to monitor the people he chose to do my work to be sure they stay on task. I've never had to do that for any workers before. I don't understand why the owner didn't preview the job site, answer my emails coherently, or make it clear to the workers that stripping the stairwell was my top priority. And finally, when the owner came to finish the job last night, he was very proud of the fact that he had given me 2 free hours of work. Perhaps he should be more concerned about the quality of the training and workmanship of the people he hires. I'm glad Mr. Mendez's company gets high ratings for painting and drywall repair. We never got to the painting portion of my job request because unfortunately they are lousy at wallpaper removal. In my opinion, this company should have to schedule and pay for a different company to complete the job of stripping the stairwell and fixing the damage to my drywall so I can paint it.
Description of Work: The provider was supposed to strip wallpaper in 3 areas, repair drywall in 3 different areas, and paint the ceiling and trim and walls of the stairwell which I cannot reach without a scaffold. The owner never came to assess the project prior to sending a crew to do the work. During the process, my job request had to be adjusted down to only stripping the 3 walls in the stairwell (one area), and repairing drywall in three areas. I had originally purchased the $499 deal for 16 hours of labor but I had to purchase an extra day to the tune of an additional $720 for this reduced amount of work. It is not finished and there is so much damage to the drywall that I am going to have to hire someone to repair it.

The painters arrived on time and were very professional. It did take 8 hours to finish the job. Please read the "deal" carefully, it may be 16 hours of painting, but if you get 2 painters it is only 8 hours. My fault for not reading very carefully the details of the "deal".

This project went extremely well. The team arrived promptly every day and worked diligently. They were friendly, courteous and professional. They did a tremendous job sanding and painting our kitchen cabinets. They look fantastic. We are very pleased with their work and will certainly use Diomedes Mendez Painting for any future needs. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Sanded and painted our kitchen cabinets.

The ceiling in our garage had never been painted, and the tape had come loose. We purchased the Big Deal for $500, which was for 16 hours of drywall/painting service. We greatly underestimated how much work was involved, plus we decided to make other improvements to the garage, so we purchased additional hours. Diomedes estimated how many additional hours were needed and ensured that his crew would return for an additional 1 1/2 days to finish the job without interruption. The men showed up on time and worked continuously each day. They took care to cover the floor and anything in the garage in order to protect against paint and sanding dust, to the extent possible. They were very meticulous about the painting. They did the necessary carpentry work prior to installing the new pegboard. We paid for all supplies, such as paint, tape, sand paper, spackling compound. The garage looks great and I plan to use this company again when I have another painting/drywall project.
Description of Work: Re-taped and respackled all the Sheetrock on the double-car garage ceiling, and did the same for the one wall of drywall. Replaced old pegboard on two walls with new pegboard. Painted the ceiling and one wall.

Cancelled service request after contractor requested I purchase various job materials for him to complete the work. My firm view was that some (if not all) of the materials should have been provided by the contractor, and that he was trying to take advantage of me.
