This started off well and ended up horribly. While I believe he is a good electrician and his prices are reasonable, his communication skills are poor and I am very surprised by his lack of professionalism. He came on a Sunday to provide the estimate, which worked well for us since we work M-F and it was a reason why we contacted him. While he later said that he told us during the estimate that he doesn't do major work on the weekends, we do not remember him telling us that and it was not on his website or the AL information. He asked us if we wanted him to look at the outlet on that day while he was there; we agreed and then he charged us $60 for the visit. When he left, we said we'd be in touch once we purchased the light and microwave. I contacted him the following week and asked if we would be charged the rate for additional hours upon a return visit because in retrospect, it would have been less expensive for us overall if we waited to have all the work done at once. He replied that he was trying to help so we could use that outlet and that if he returned he kindly offered that he would not charge us for the first 1/2 hr. of work. We scheduled some other work on our house for the end of April and we were therefore delayed in getting back in touch with him (although I let him know what was going on and why). Beginning 5/11, I contacted Mark by email on 3 occasions trying to schedule an appointment. I first suggested any Sunday, then a specific week, and a finalyl a specific weekday and each time received a short response saying no and never offering any alternative. When I finally asked if we should find somebody else for the work since he didn’t seem interested, he said yes, he was very busy. If he had said this from the beginning and/or informed us when he would have been available, a lot of frustration would have been avoided on both sides. When I shared that with him and reiterated that I wish we hadn’t paid $60 for the outlet up front, I received a lengthy email “responding to my accusations of non-responsiveness and cheating”. I respectfully replied that I never accused him of either of those things, just that I wish we had waited to get the outlet fixed and that he did not convey that he was busy and/or informed us when he would be available when I contacted him to try to reschedule something. I received the following message in response (word-for word from the email): "You are simply ungrateful for what I did for you. Try to find another electrician who'll work for what I charge: 60 first hour and 40 thereafter. Then you want to whine about me not being able to accommadate your schedule. Excuse me for being in high demand."
Description of Work: We needed an estimate for 3 items; we weren't receiving power to an electrical outlet in our kitchen, we wanted to re-place and re-center the dining room overhead light, and add an additional power line to install an exhaust microwave oven. We wanted to get a professional opinion on the latter two items prior to purchasing a new light and microwave. We also asked about some sconces that we can't use because there is no direct outlet to them to see if he had a solution. He replaced a faulty kitchen receptical the same day as the estimate.

Response from Mark Young Electric
Dear Member, I've reviewed out entire correspondence since you first contacted me on Sunday 3/6/11. I called within a day to set an appointment for an estimate. No answer...I left a voice mail message. On Tuesday, 3/8/11, you apologized for missing my call and said you were flexible the rest of the week or try for Saturday. On Friday, I apologized that I had had no chance that week and suggested Sunday for an estimate, as I don't work Saturdays, and you agreed. I was mindful all week but could not work you into my schedule, yet I agreed to see you on a week-end. Therefore, I did not fail for a week to respond, as you've accused. On Sunday, 3/20/11, you expressede dissatisfaction with my $60 charge to fix your kitchen receptacle, and I replied that day, explaining my fee policy. Yet, I graciously offered to give you a break by working for nothing for the 1st 1/2 hour if I came back. A month later, on 4/11/11, you sent an update on your plans to refinish your floors. Another month later, on 5/11/11, you presumptuously stated, "we can go ahead and schedule a time for you...on a week-end", after having told you when I did the estimate that I don't do significant work on week-ends. On Sunday, 5/15/11, I replied and reminded you that I'm not scheduling significant work projects on week-ends. The rest of the correspondence is simply my trying to convey to you that I'm booked solid for a couple weeks in advance, yet you expressed disappointment that I was not available on certain days. In conclusion, you have no basis for your accusations that I have cheated you. I charged you a fair price for getting power to your kitchen, when you had none, on a Sunday. I did it as a favor to you. I have made no promises to you and have broken no promises. You may be disappointed that I'm now, two months after your first contacted me, too busy, but I strongly resent being falsely accused.

He's the best contractor I have come across in the area and I have probably dealt with about 20 of them. He's very good. He does conscientious work. His price is hard to beat. He was responsive to me. He does honest and good work, which is not always the case with electricians.
Description of Work: I used Mark Young Electric to install new fixtures in the kitchen and run a new line and circuit. He also did some repairs to a broken circuit and he got a permit for me.

Called Mark Young on a Sunday expecting an answering machine and was pleasantly surprised when he answered himself. I needed the work done quickly as we were expecting a furniture delivery that required an electric switch to be replaced with a blank, so we could place the furniture against it. Mr. Young said he could do the work on Monday afternoon around 1:00. He arrived about 5 minutes early, walked through the projects we wanted taken care of, told me his hourly rate and set to work. Replacing an existing ceiling fan with a new one we had purchased and replacing the electrical switch went quickly. Mr Young was careful to move the glass table under the fan area, spread a drop cloth and cleaned up when finished. He then tackled moving the phone jack from our kitchen area to the nearby dining room, requiring drilling and "fishing" of the phone line through the walls and the installation of a new phone jack. Once again he cleaned up all wall board dust and pieces and made sure everything was working properly before leaving. His bill for these services was $145, which was in our opinion, the most reasonable charge we have every received! We would not hesitate to use Mr. Young for any of our future electrical needs. Service at its best!
Description of Work: Replaced one ceiling fan; removed a switch and replaced with blank; installed and re-wired a new telephone jack.

Mark was great. I discovered my electrical problem late on a Saturday afternoon. Mark came out on Saturday evening to assess the problem and begin the repair. He then came back the next day and worked several hours on Sunday to finish the rewiring work. The quality of the work was excellent, and the cost was extremely reasonable. He went above and beyond the call of duty by giving up a large part of his weekend to get my electric water heater back on line, so I could start enjoying hot water again. I would not hesitate to use Mark again.
Description of Work: Mark diagnosed a problem with the wiring in my house. The circuit feeding current to my electric water heater failed. He isolated the problem in the wiring, then rewired the circuit. To do so, he had to re-do several of the breakers in my breaker panel, i.e., moving some breakers around and rewiring some. When he was finished, the current was back to the water heater, and the breaker box was in much better shape than before.

Mark had to do some clever wiring to place the inside wall switch where I wanted - given the location of the security light. It's exactly like I wanted and I feel much better now that the yard can be fully illuminated. I had planned to replace the ceiling fixture myself until I discovered that there was no electrical box. The wires had been pushed through holes drilled in the ceiling joists. Oh, the joys of owning an old house. Mark worked carefully in the small opening in the ceiling and was able to install the electrical box and fixture without creating a larger opening that would have to be patched later. The new fixture looks like it always been there. Overall, Mark was careful and thoughtful about the work. He kept the space clean and neat and took care to remove any mess that resulted.
Description of Work: Mark installed an outdoor security light with an inside wall switch, outdoor electrical outlet, rewired and installed a new ceiling fixture, and converted two outlets from 2 to 3 prongs.

The work took him about 40 minutes. I asked for the cost and he said $40, but since he said earlier he charges $60 for the first hour unless it's a really small repair I gave him $60. I couldn't believe how reasonable a price that was for the work he did already, and I didn't feel comfortable paying him only $40. He explained what was wrong and what he had to do, worked efficiently, and didn't charge me for parts (e.g. wire) which I've had some electricians do in the past. The fact that he works on Sunday is also really nice, most electricians don't work on the weekend at all without charging a lot and I appreciated having it done. I would highly recommend Mark for anyone who needs electrical work done.
Description of Work: I had a outlet spark and short out on Friday and the breaker wouldn't go back on. I called Mark on Saturday to set up a time for him to come on Sunday morning. He found that my wiring had burned out, likely b/c the outlet wasn't properly secured (missing a screw) and the insulation was old. He had to replace the wire, drill out the broken screw and resecure the outlet properly.

Mark was prompt and professional. He utilized technology for commnications and billing, returning emails, electronic invoice etc... Which you wouldn't think was a big deal until you have contractors that never respond. He quickly identified our problems and had all the tools to fix them with him. He cleaned up after himself and even touched up a few outlets that looked improper. He was in and out in an hour and 15 minutes and billed fairly for work and materials. To top it all off; this was all within 24 hours of initally contacting him. Just refreshingly pleasant attitude and proffesional service.
Description of Work: Diagnosed and fixed an electrical outage in our bathrooms, and a problem with our dining room chandeler. Also fixed general issues around the house.

Mark's workmanship, attention to detail, neatness in cleaning up, his empathy with the client, his excellent communication skills, his careful and considerate LISTENING skills, made it a pleasure to deal with him. He is worth every penny of his fee and more.
Description of Work: He mounted customer supplied flourescent lighting fixtures under kitchen cabinetry. He shortened electrical cables as need be, streamlined the cables paths, concealed the cables artfully, fit them into the most correct placement.
