The work was thorough. My only complaint is that the new mortar is lighter than the old mortar. They assured me it would match. Maybe over time.....

It is really difficulty to match mortar to existing exactly. Anything you put in new will need to age and weather in order to match closely as some point. In some cases we are trying to match mortar colors that are over 20 years old. We specifically put in our contracts we will match mortar as close as possible to the existing - it will take time for the mortar to age and weather in order to match closely. We apologize that you are not happy with the color of the mortar we really do our best to match it closely.

Our 20 year old home was showing signs of mortar breaking up on our front stairs. We bought Angie's Big Deal for 8 hours of masonary work plus additional time to complete a job that would require more work. Bill came over to evaluate and estimate the cost of the job the same day that I called and gave me what I considered a fair price based on previous discussions with other potential vendors in the past. He also gave me helpful related advice about how to protect the brickwork in the future and avoid or delay the need to do this again in the future. He explained when the original house was built, the builder appeared to do a good job, but didn't use the best type of mortar for a flat surface. (They used the same "type N" mortar that they used on the vertical brick house face. That is fine for vertical surfaces, but it is best to use a "type S" mortar for flat surfaces prone to freeze/thaw cycle issues.) Because there was a minor color matching issue, he gave me the option of colored mortar or the stronger gray mortar and I went with the stronger mortar. Once I told him I wanted the work done, he came over with a crew of 4 workmen within 2-3 days. They worked hard, fast and very professionally. The quality was excellent and looked better than when the house was newly built by a high quality, custom builder that I would use again. The masons clearly knew what they were doing and did not waste any time or effort. Grinding out the old mortar did generate a lot of dust, but they washed it away as best they could. When they were done, they cleanup up all of the old and new mortar pieces and dust, let me know when it could be walked on and left the area looking as good and clean as when they arrived. They will be returning this morning to do the "acid wash" of the bricks to clean up the edges and any small bits of mortar that might show up after everything has dried. This is normal and can't be done until everything has fully dried and set up. Beyond the brick work, Bill suggested a safe water based, penetrating products that will not peel off that I could buy that will protect the mortar from freeze/thaw problems, how and when to apply it. He also explained the problems generated by mold and mildew that will sometimes occur. Additionally, he is giving me some recommendations for other work that needs to be done that his company does not do. All in all, my wife and I are very pleased with the results and would use Custom Masonry again if we needed the service. We have no concerns about recommending him to anyone. Bill is a nice and helpful guy that knows his stuff and does what he says he will do.

Everything was perfect. Custom Masonry's estimate was 63 percent of that of our next lowest bidder. Their work crew was here by 7 am. They completed the work in one day. Even though we have an old house with bricks that are no longer manufactured, the workers succeeded in finding close matches and arranging them among our existing bricks in a way that looks attractive and normal. The next morning, they came back at 7 a.m. and washed off all the dust. Our back patio looks the best it has looked in years. My wife and I couldn't be more pleased.

Custom Masonry responded promptly with an estimate for additional materials and then followed up with a two-man crew who performed excellent, skilled workmanship on the sidewalk. The owner was professional and courteous. The work crew when straight to work upon arrival at our job site, and they were equally as professional and courteous as the owner of Custom Masonry. Our 23-year old sidewalk looks great and is once again safe to walk on. Stone and brickwork are very expensive to maintain. This was an exceptional deal. We have extensive brick sidewalks around the property, including both sides of our driveway. We will call upon Custom Masonry to perform any future repairs.
Description of Work: Brick sidewalk repair. I purchased a special offer Custom Masonry of Arlington, VA, ran on Angie's List. We had about 30 feet of brick sidewalk that was in disrepair. Loose pavers were scatters over the entire area.

They were quick and quiet workers (OK - the jackhammer did have to make noise.) They were able to use some old bricks I had to match the old steps. clean up was quite good. When the workmen came in to use my bathroom a couple of times, they nicely took off their shoes outside. When a storm came and work was delayed for a couple of days, I could have used a little bit more communication with the firm, but overall, everything came out very well.
Description of Work: I hired Custom Masonry for the Angie's List Big Deal of 8 hours of Masonry repair for $199. Then they gave me a good bid on replacing my 62 year old front walk and driveway. They re-pointed the loose bricks in my front porch and replaced worn and missing bricks. They dug out the concrete driveway and front walk from the front porch to the street. They laid new concrete driveway and front walk with embedded reinforcing wire - which the originals did not have.

I used an Angie's List deal coupon to hire Custom Masonry. Wasn't sure if I'd need all the time offered but knew that the work I needed done would be worth at least the cost of the coupon. Family member office manager contacted me within 24 hours, family member owner paid visit within 48 hours and in addition to reviewing the obvious repairs needed for the front steps we walked around the house to assess other potential needs. Identified major repair needs on our chimney that we'll deal with at a later date. Crew came a few days later, delayed one day by lousy weather, and provided a neat comprehensive repair. Paid an additional $32 for materials.
Description of Work: Repaired cracked/broken cement on front brick staircase. Promptly did excellent job. Would hire again.

The deal indicated that they would perform 8 hours of masonry work for $199. When the estimator came to my house, he told me that the work I wanted -- repair to a wall -- would take 8 hours but that he did not remember the terms of the deal. When he checked with his office and found out it was 8 hours for $199, the company quoted additional costs to do the job which would have required a substantial additional payment to do the work we wanted. We told them we wanted a refund instead.

The coupon did not include work performed from scaffolding only flat work. The work needed would have required the use of scaffolding so we provided the actual cost to perform the work since the coupon was not valid. A refund was issued to homeowner.

I contacted this company through e-mail initially, didn't receive a reply in over a week, so I contacted them through their website form, and didn't receive a reply. Finally I called them and went straight to voicemail where I left a message and never received a reply. I don't know if they are out of business, or just weren't interested in the job I had (a $20k brick staircase), but they never replied. ah well, plenty of easier options.

This was the second job we hired Custom Masonry to complete based on our previous experience. Bill and his crew were (again) outstanding! We had some existing brick work and Bill took the time to find historical bricks to match and provided valuable design suggestions. His crew arrived when they said they were going to arrive, did amazing work, finished on time and within budget, and cleaned up the mess! We have received so many compliments on their work! We cannot recommend Custom Masonry enough!

Custom Masonry performed great work initially on a patio with assurances if there were ever an issue, they would repair the patio at no cost. Later used the firm to install front porch steps (again excellenet work). Issue: despite multiple assurances they would repair the 2-3 pavers that have sunk adjacent to the back steps on the patio, they have not done so, have failed to reeturn phone calls and e-mail. I regret having recommended the firm to neighbors which was based upon their initial work. I will not hire someone else to repair their work. So, if you are concerned about warrant follow-up, find someone else for your masonry work.
Description of Work: Installed paver-style patio in the back yard (later replacement steps and associated apron entryway in the front of the house). This focuses on the backyard patio only.

We never installed the patio we did the back steps as well as the front entry way. When our crew was working at the neighbors house we had them go over and asses the needed repair and it was not included in the warranty since we did not install the patio so we told them that we would repair it for $350 and they declined. We apologize that you feel that we did not respond to the issue however, we did quality work for you and have addressed the issues when you have contacted us. Unfortunately we could not address this issue because we were not the ones that installed the patio however we did offer to repair it for a fair price.
From the original estimate to completion of the job, this was a professional outfit. Bill, the owner, discussed the project thoroughly in advance, offering good suggestions on placing curves in the walkway, and explaining the process and the type and color of flagstone and facing stone they would use to match the colors on the house exterior. His crew was terrific. They completed the prep work on the first day, including the facing stone on the porch steps, came back and did the flag stone the second day, and wrapped up the third day. We were not comfortable with one area where the walkway met the driveway, and they were back immediately to cut and reshape a curve. Bill would not take our final check until we were satisfied. His crew take a lot of pride in their work and seemed genuinely enthusiastic (as we were) about how the project turned out. They did a good job of cleaning up after all was done, and took special care to protect landscaping. Bill walked us through the do's and don'ts of maintaining the walkway, especially in winter. He guarantees his work for five years. We've recommended this company to our neighbors.
Description of Work: Covered/replaced cement walkway and porch with flagstone and facing stone.
Description of Work: In November of 2007, they completed a Flagstone paver walkway and front stoop. They also repaired separating concrete wall on enclosed patio foundation. In September 2008, they completed a landscape stone wall and completed some basement stairwell repairs.
The experience went well overall. I was satisfied with their work, and their price was good. The technicians were professional and finished the work on time. They also seemed knowledgeable; the other companies that I talked with provided various solutions to a problem that we were having, but Custom Masonry accurately identified the problem and then accurately corrected it. The walkway and front porch looks beautiful!

They did a great job overall! I remember their price being reasonable. I’ve had no major problems since with the walkway. The only problem that we’ve had is a small pool of water sometimes collects when we have heavy rain, but it’s a minor problem. We didn’t know about that while the work was being done. I’d call them again!

I needed work done on my walkway (slate) and steps (BRICK) into my townhouse. There was a large gap that had developed over the years between the bottom of the first step and the walkway. The railing was loose and some of the bricks in the steps and landing needed pointing.I contacted Bernard by email. He called me and told me he would come by and do an estimate. He did so and gave me what I thought was a very fair price. It was at least a few weeks between the time I got the estimate and when the actual work was done, but I was not in a rush.Once the work was done and I saw the end result, I could not have been more pleased. It was everything I had asked for and more. In addition to fixing the bricks and the steps, Bernard pulled all of the slate up, regraded/filled underneath and then replaced the slate. I have recommended Bernard to all my neighbors and he will be the first person I call should I need more work of this type done.

Not a good experience. A lady from this company called us in regard to the concrete driveway expansion that we wanted. She was nice on the phone. I stated that our budget was $1700 for about 225-250sqft of concrete. She said she will talk to her brother, who's the owner. She quickly sent me an email back stating that he could do it for $1900 but that wouldn't include hauling of trash and the material cost of driveway drain that we need to extend, although he would install it for free. The problem is that all the other estimates we've received are all-inclusive estimates (including driveway drain and trash hauling, etc.). So I emailed back to see if she could provide an all-inclusive estimate. This is so that we could do an apples-to-apples comparison with other companies. She never called or replied back to my email. I can only think that they're not interested, which is fine. But it would be really nice if she at least replied to my email. Overall, the communication was poor. The thing is there's a good chance we would have hired this company, but they never got back to us.
