Services we offer
Building -Sunroom, Porches, & Decks. Remodeling - Kitchen & Bathrooms.
Description of Work: We were very pleased with the service, which included refinishing our basement laundry room and a few other things like putting in recessed lights in rec room and installing ceiling fans in bedrooms. The basement job was tricky because of low ceiling and ductwork, pipes and wires to work around. Also required moving a laundry sink to the opposite side of the wall into the unfinished part of basement. The job involved plumbing, electrical, drywall and installing floor tiles. The owner, Chris, called us right back when we requested an estimate and came out in a few days. He gave us a firm start date approximately a month later. The worker he sent over was named Dan and he was great. He did a very good job and was creative and resourceful in working around the several obstacles in the basement laundry room, so that the finished product was even better than we had expected. When the job ended up taking longer to finish than Chris had estimated, he was very apologetic and declined to charge us for an interior door and its installation which we had added to the project. Dan also corrected any imperfections we pointed out. We would definitely use the company again, and had intended to during the summer, but apparently Chris lost an employee and was short-staffed. We tried to set something up on a few occasions by email, and Chris responded and indicated that he'd get back to us, but never would, so we finally gave up.

Description of Work: Reconnect clothes drier to exterior vent through attic, replace bathroom ceiling fan
Chris was very professional and kept me fully informed along the way. I just left the key and his folks got the work done. While working on the additional beam for my swing, they noticed that the porch screening needed fixing and replaced the screening for me. I am very happy with the results and would definitely call Chris again.
Description of Work: I had a number of miscellaneous things that needed fixing around the house, including replacing a screen door, fixing a ceiling light, repairing and repainting bubbling ceiling paint, and installing a porch swing.

Chris has been fantastic since day 1. He is communicative, punctual and happy to help where help is needed. I would highly recommend him if you need an extra set of hands around the house. Whenever he would not be available to do something, he always let me know ahead of time and changed his fee accordingly.
Description of Work: Chris has been providing us with help around the rental house I am in for the past year. He helps us by mowing the lawn, de-weeding the lawn, shoveling snow, taking out the trash/recycling bins, change the A/C filter, checking the fire alarms, and has even helped repair a fence as well as some torn window screens.

What a joy! I contacted Chris through his website. He came out to look at the job the next day and gave me a written estimate that evening. Our planned start date got delayed by a snow storm (and kudos to Chris for contacting me a day in advance to reschedule). When a followup date had to be adjusted, Chris called me in advance to keep me apprised of the schedule. That alone is a rarity in this business. Chris works with a drywall expert named Milton. Milton is an artist (as I learned when he was able to fix the molding on the door), as well as an excellent, diligent drywall guy. He is careful and smart, anticipating problems before they happen. He advised me to tear out only part of the wall - I stupidly said to tear out more. From now on, I will listen to him. He knows his stuff. He cleaned up each day when he left and was very careful of my things. Both Chris and Milton are complete professionals. They promise only what they can deliver and indeed deliver more. I could not be happier. In fact, I'm going to have them redo my master bath!
Description of Work: Repaired basement wall with water damage. Tore out almost half of a wall, along with studs and other framing material to open up to masonry block. After it dried out, painted the wall with dryloc, reframed it, and replaced drywall plus the frame around a window. Built up the drywall with compound to be level with non-plumb wall. Prepped for paint, primed and painted entire wall. Sealed crack between driveway and house to prevent further leaks. Additionally, resculpted some molding around a door that was crooked, plus repaired molding around another window. Painted both. Rerouted downspout that had caused the problem.

We met at the home to discuss the work to be done. Within a week he provided me an estimate. He came on the day agreed and worked non-stop until the work was completed. When required, he went to Home Depot to buy material required to do the job. If required, I will most certainly go to him for additional work.
Description of Work: The arrived the first day and each consecutive day on time. They started and worked through each day stopping only for lunch. Service was professional, clean, and complete. Contractor was ready to do additional work large and small. He provided his professional opinion on work issues and where he believed appropriate, recommended that I did or (equally important) did not do something as it was too early or not necessary. I was able to delete projects that I did not want to go forward with. Where I asked him to look at something after the job was done, he came back to look at it. Overall it was a positive work experience.

Very nice. Chris came by and looked at the work and sent an estimate later that day. I accepted and we set a date. He was there promptly with a helper. They spend about 2 hours on the fan and about 20 minutes on the outside light. They cleaned up after themselves and took all the old lights and fans away with the for disposal. It couldn't have been a better experience.
Description of Work: Had a ceiling fan replaced in the kitchen and the light on the front of our house replaced.

While Chris Lamar (the owner) is a very nice person he was unable to provide the services that I requested. The following is the e-mail that I sent to him letting him know I was not planning on using his service: Chris, Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate all of the work you have done in helping to scope out this project. Unfortunately, after chatting this over, my wife and I have come to the conclusion that we can no longer undertake this work for two reasons: 1. It has taken a lot of time to get the details of this project finalized and as a result we are beginning to seriously push up against the projected delivery date for our child. 2. Our perception is that you and the subcontractor have had difficulties coordinating to finalize the details of this project (i.e., long turn around times responding to our questions, a lack of cost information beyond the general estimate originally provided, difficulty establishing timeframes for the work). As a result we have concerns about how the work will be executed.
Description of Work: I was looking to have Arlington Hom Service install a couple of hand rails in my home in advance of the birth of my first child.

Response from Arlington Home Service
Angies List Members are our some of our best clients and we strive to provide them with the best customer care. Unfortunately, in this instance we failed to do so. We met with and provided this member a written estimate within 48 hours of our initial meeting. (The timing of which was before the Holidays.) We were told that the member would like to have the work completed before the end of January, which is where the disconnect and our failure to completely understand the members needs began. A good example of this disconnect is in their wording of the "general" estimate The estimate that we provide to all of our clients is never a "general" one, it is a specific cost in labor and materials based on what the client would like to see done. We failed to make this clear to them. Also in this instance, the member, after we provided the estimate, began to ask for changes to the materials and the finish to be applied, which is never a problem, we want all of our clients to be happy with the final outcome. However, the changes they asked for resulted in additional costs, which could not be calculated until they decided on how they wanted to proceed (The main outstanding question was whether they wanted to have a paint or stain finish.) Unfortunately, we never got to this point, after an email to them, of which I thought answered all of the outstanding questions and made clear that we could meet their deadline to have the project completed, I received an email, the wording of which corresponds to the report submitted. I sent an email back to apologize and even offered to help them find another company to do the work, saying that I hoped the time taken would not prevent them from going ahead with the project. I failed as a business owner to completely understand what the members questions and concerns were and did not communicate in a timely enough fashion for them. I hope that any member reading this report and my subsequent response, would still allow my company the chance to earn their business, as our reputation for providing excellent customer service, is more important to me than anything else....

I think it is just a one-person operation, and the guy who runs it is really nice and very responsive. He is reasonably priced and does good work.
Description of Work: We have used Arlington Home Service to do yard work like cutting the grass and hedging, and things like that. We have a monthly contract with them where the cost ranges from $45 to $65 a month, because it is seasonal. They have also done some cement patching and painting of a stairwell, and some repair work worth a few hundred dollars at a time.

We interviewed several handymen, but Chris was the best choice for us for his availability, reasonable price and ability to address the maintenance issues we anticipated. Chris also told us he had done work for one of our neighbors. When we asked her about his work, she had nothing but nice things to say. Chris walked through our property with us ahead of time and we discussed all possible maintenance scenarios that could arise. He was both affordable and willing to be on call. He recommended repairmen for a few jobs that we needed right away that he couldn't do himself; the work was also very good and affordable. He also fixed a door that we needed shortened. Recently our renters called on him to fix a faucet and handle a problem with a window. He handled both very quickly for a reasonable fee.
Description of Work: We hired this company to be an on-call handyman for our rental property to handle any problems that our renters might encounter, like leaky faucets, etc.

It went very well. Chris promptly returned my call and arranged to meet me the next day to walk through my itemized list. His estimate for completing the repairs was reasonable. The work was completed shortly thereafter within the timeframes specified. Chris is personable and his work professional. I would definitely hire him again and gladly recommend him to my friends.
Description of Work: Variety of home maintenance items in preparation for sale of house. Minor electrical (replace switches, tighten loose outlets), exterior power wash and calking around windows, regrout bathroom floor, realign and tighten kitchen cabinet door hinges, replace outside floodlights, add foam insulation around pipes in garage, repair loose siding, reattach shutters, mortar loose walkway bricks, install towel rack, and adjust bedroom and closet doors so they will open and close properly.

Chris Lamar, the owner of Arlington Home Services, responded imediately to my message asking about his services. He came to my home that weekend --- arrived right on time --- and we discussed the pending projects. He came back a few days later and completed the above described tasks. He will return next week to tackle more projects. He is extremely pleasant, very competent, and honest about what he can and cannot do. I think I have finally --- after many years --- found just the right person to take care of all the projects needed around my house. He charges by the hour and gets his work done quickly. He's excellent and I highly recommend him to all Arlington homeowners in need of a good handy man.

These areas of rot had been around, in some cases, for years. The repairs weren't all that difficult and I could have done it myself but I just wasn't finding the time. We want to get the house painted so we called in Chris, based on his reviews on Angies List, for a quote. He showed up promptly for the appointment, reviewed the work, and gave us a reasonable quote a couple of days later after pricing out supplies. We went ahead and hired him and he had the work done within a week (and would have had it done sooner had the weather cooperated). I'm pleased to finally have these problems taken care of so we can move ahead and get the house painted.
Description of Work: Had Chris repair nine areas of rotting wood on two of our porches. All of the rot was in support columns, railing supports, or the railings themselves.

In our yard, he did a great job power washing and water sealing our fence. In addition, in the yard, he also buried a drain line, moved and replanted azaleas and mulched. Inside our home, Chris painted a bedroom and did some grout repair in the bathroom. Everything was done on time and under budget!

Chris worked through this job like a champ. He showed up at the promised time with all the right gear and was ready to go. We hit many obstacles along the way (it's an old house) but he was very optimistic and determined to work around them and find practical solutions. He unhooked the sink, disposal, and dishwasher like he could do it in his sleep. We worked very well together to tear down the old cabinets and put up the new ones and reinstall all the hardware. We had picked up a 10' cord of pre-made laminate for the counter tops; he cut these out per measurements right there at the house and everything fit perfectly. I totally recommend him for this and any other kind of handyman services you need around the house. I have a plan to put up some custom bookshelves in the future and he'll be the first number I call.
Description of Work: This wasn't really a cabinet making job but an actual cabinet replacing. The job was to tear down the existing cabinets and replace them with some pre-made cabinets we bought from Lowe's. Though I'm very handy myself, I had never done this kind of job before and needed a more experienced handyman to help me out with the work. Chris Lamar, the owner of the company, was referred to me by a friend, and after talking to him for a bit I felt very comfortable with his rates and in using his services.
