My shower faucet stopped working. Called Smith Plumbing and spoke with Winky, only to discover that I was too far away to service. However, Winkey spoke with me on the phone two or three times, walking me through the repair. Unbelievably helpful--especially when he was under no obligation to do so. His kindness was very refreshing!

I am one of the few that ever get to experience a failure of their main sewer line. Not just the outside to the street, that was done by a different company just a month or two prior, but also the main line under the house itself. Yeah, not a good year to say the least, however, with an entire new main sewer line we should be good to go for as long as we stay in our home. This review is for the main line under the home which was obviously a much bigger job. I had several companies provide bids and went with "Winky" Smith based on price and experience in this type of work. Overall the experience was about as pleasant as could be hoped for under the circumstances. The job actually didn't start out as a full replacement but based on the condition of the cast iron pipes that needed repaired we ultimately elected to do a full replacement rather than piecemeal repairs in the future. As for the job that was done I cannot say enough for the quality of work and the professionalism of Winky and his crew. His main master plumber, Ismael, was incredible. He never failed to show up with a smile on his face and full of energy. This is not easy work. Sixty years of dried settled dirt is essentially concrete that required a jackhammer for a large portion of the job and this is in cramped spaces for the most part. They did not take shortcuts. In fact they went above and beyond to actually correct the original line to a proper pitch to allow us to abandon a secondary sewer line for our lower level rec room. This gave us the ability to have a garbage disposal in the rec room sink and allowed us to tie that line into the main sewer line itself. Obviously they had to also jackhammer through a couple of the main living spaces to access the main sewer line. In the lower level office they actually disassembled the floating floor and reassembled it to save the expense of replacing it. The bathroom floor was also completely demolished. They did a wonderful job of rebuilding the bathroom. They relocated the toilet and expanded the downstairs shower allowing better and easier access. The tile work was excellent and as an extra bonus Winky supplied the shower head complete with diverter so we now feel like we are at an expensive hotel every time we use it! Everything was done in a reasonable timeframe and again we have no complaints about the quality of workmanship. In the end I could have used some paperwork help for insurance purposes but Winky was distracted with some personal issues and I was never able to get it. Despite that snag I would still recommend him and his crew if you ever need to deal with a major plumbing issue or if you just want the job done right by master plumbers with excellent remodeling skills.

In repairing the second pipe, he made a bigger mess, wasn't concerned with cleaning it up because he wasn't charging us for it. It was sloppy and the mess stained our covers. I

I'm sorry I have no control over rotten pipes that are hidden in your walls and ceilings. The machine that has to go in the pipe rotates a steel cable my normal price for just the sneaking of the drain is $230. And you had to pay an additional $70 to get all new Plumbing pipes. Can't believe it.

Unbelievably good service! If only all contractors were like this. Timeliness was very important to our job, as the pipes were leaking at our rental property, so we had to pay for a hotel for our tenants until everything was resolved. Winky (the owner) promptly met me at the property to give me an estimate quickly and on the spot, which included plumbing and drywall/painting work. Originally, he informed me that was not able to start work for about a week out. After receiving another estimate in order to start work earlier (to have less hotel expenses), I still decided to go with Smith Plumbing despite the delay, because the price was better and I just felt more comfortable with his commitment to getting the job done right. I'm so glad that I did! Smith Plumbing was aware of our situation and busted their hump to start work earlier than projected. They worked over the weekend and got plumbing, drywall and re-painting work done in 2 days! I received regular calls and updates from Winky informing me of progress and getting questions answered. The work looks wonderful. Jessica who helped schedule to logistics and handled the payment details was also awesome! Once work was completed, she met me at the property to make sure I was satisfied. Very prompt, professional and good quality.

I contacted Smith Plumbing on July 29 via email and received a response less than 2 hours later. Two hours later Mr. Smith and his workers arrived. After looking at the backed up water in the sink, Winky quoted me a price of $230.00 to snake the drain. After draining the sink, and was preparing to snake the drain by bypassing the drain, he discovered a loose pipe. Although this was an additional problem, he would not charge me an additional price. (He did not wanted to change a price that we had already agreed on. He was not able to continue the repair because of the broken pipe and and rescheduled an appointment for the following morning. Winky called that morning to let me know when he would arrive and arrived on time. He repaired the pipe, snaked the drain and cleaned up all within a hour and a half. I would definitely hire Smith Plumbing for all my future plumbing and remodeling projects!

I will be calling Smith Plumbing and Winky when we have future projects that involve plumbing or gas work. Great job and thank you.
Description of Work: I used Smith Plumbing to do the gas line installation for 2 generators. I am an electrical contractor who has used a few subcontractors in the past to do this type of work. I found Winky to be the easiest to work with out of all the subs I have used. The job had some difficulties with scheduling due to the customer. But Winky did what he said he was going to do when it came time for his part of the job. After he was done the next day he met the county inspector for the inspection of both gas lines for the generators. Both passed with no problem.

We were forced to renovate our master bathroom unexpectedly when we learned that our toilet had been leaking into the subfloor, under the tile, possibly for years. We'd gotten an estimate from Winky prior to starting the project but decided on another contractor, a friend of a friend. When that contractor was unable to give us a firm start date for our project, I called Winky on a Wednesday to see whether he would still be interested in the work. Within an hour, he had arrived at our house with his tape measure to do final measurements -- he even remembered the details of our project from a month before. Winky arrived early the next morning with his crew to do the demolition work (removing the old cabinets and tile). Friday, Joe came and spent the whole day patching the drywall and starting to prime the walls. Saturday, Chris the tile artist came and laid our whole tile floor in a few hours -- and he came back early on Sunday morning to do the grout work because he didn't want to disturb the plans we had for the afternoon. On Monday and Tuesday, Joe returned and completed the painting work. Wednesday, Juan came and installed the cabinets and countertops -- he and Winky figured out a way to make the project work even though our first contractor had directed us to order several parts in the wrong size. Thursday, Winky himself came back and installed the toilet and put in all of the fixtures. Friday, Joe returned to touch up the paint, and Friday evening, Winky sent two professional cleaners, who thoroughly cleaned not only the master bath, but also the master bedroom, which had fallen victim to a lot of dust during the week. At least one member of the crew was there every day, weekends too, until our project was done. Throughout the project, my husband and I were thrilled with Winky and his crew and their professional yet friendly work. Once Winky heard we had been without our master bathroom for 6 weeks, he made it his personal mission to complete our project as quickly as possible. I know that they had other jobs going on, but they never made us feel like we were squeezed into the schedule. All of the guys took our project seriously and treated it with as much professionalism as I have ever seen. Winky always took my phone calls or returned them within 15 minutes. We communicated via phone, email, and text message, and it was always easy to reach him with questions or concerns. The final thing I simply must share with you is that Winky is a fourth-generation plumber who was able to identify the underlying reason that our toilet was leaking -- apparently, this problem had occurred at least once before we bought the house, because whoever replaced the toilet years ago didn't use the proper technique for our 1960s plumbing. The thing that amazed me was that one plumber had already told us we needed to replace the entire plumbing tree in our house, but Winky laughed and said that the pipes would outlast either of us. I have never had a plumber tell me that a repair wasn't necessary. Whether you need to have your entire bathroom redone or just have a problem with one plumbing fixture, Winky can handle it.
Description of Work: Winky and the crew replaced subfloor and tile in master bathroom; installed cabinets and countertops; painted walls, ceiling, trim work; installed faucet, towel bars, etc.

The first time I called Winky he actually answered the phone. I explained I had a toilet leaking into my basement, and also other contractor work to get my house ready to go on the market. When we talked on that first call he asked me to text him my name and contact information. He explained that he could help me with the other contracting work because of his network with other service providers. He confirmed receiving my text message and information, and said he would get back to me within 3 days, which I thought was a long time given my plumbing needs, but a good recommendation is worth gold – or so I thought. He never followed up. I waited 4 days before I called him, and got no reply. I called both his mobile and office phones, texted and emailed for more than a week, but the guy wouldn't answer my calls or return my messages. I felt like a fool for giving him so much time, and I would have accepted that he wasn't able to fit me in his schedule if he'd only told me. He wouldn’t even text me a simple “Yes” or “No”. I finally moved on to start interviewing other service providers, which delayed my plumbing work even further. The week+ I wasted on Winky ultimately set my contracting work back by 6 weeks because all other providers I found on Angie's List by that time had wait lists (it was in the fall, just as work was picking up for plumbing and contractors). I hope it was just a matter of bad timing for Winky, but the lack of professionalism was appalling. I do not know how he possibly came so highly recommended. My fear at the end was if he actually came and started the job, I couldn’t trust that he wouldn’t disappear again part way through. How could I trust a contractor who could so comfortably shut a person out like that with no sense of accountability? Who would there be to call if he just decided to not show back up on the job one day?
Description of Work: I tried to give Winky some decent business, but after our initial conversation, the guy would not return my calls. He came highly recommended by another provider so when I had a toilet leaking into my basement I called him. I gave him more than a week to get back to me because of the recommendation, but finally I had to find someone else to do the work. He claims to respond to emergencies - you’d be wise to take that with a grain of salt.

Dear [member name removed], Good Morning, Please forgive the delay in responding, I was unaware of your entry as I have been without administrative help for over a year to further complicate issues, I have had my phone die which most likely happened during the time you were trying to communicate with me.. That said, I am very sorry for my lack of communication regarding your situation. Sincerely Winky Smith Plumbing LLC

He was prompt in returning our intial call. He then came and assessed the situation and then scheduled a return visit to correct it. He provided us with good information and explanations. He was able to return sooner than scheduled because of a cancellation. He was very careful to protect our hardwood floors and other items in the bathroom and adjoining hallway while doing the work. We were very pleased with the job and wished that we had hired him when we first had the toilet installed since the entire problem could have been avoided with a proper installation.
Description of Work: We had a leak from a toilet that was less than a year old. He located the source of the problem which was an incorrect initial installation. He was able to show us what the problem was and correct it.

I was referred to Winky by my coworker, before I ever joined Angieslist. She had known him for years and said he was extremely trustworthy and does great work. I'm glad I listened to her advice! (Im not surprised by his great reviews here) He did an excellent job when replacing my old broken water heater which had broken and was leaking. Recently, I had some pipes erode and water was leaking into my basement. I called Winky and he came out to immediately help. Not only has he done an excellent job at a reasonable rate, but is also extremely professional and prompt.

My husband and I felt that our experience with Smith Plumbing was seamless with no problems and reasonable compared to the other estimate received. Smith Plumbing was the third of three plumbing companies (all three are listed on Angie's list) that we solicited estimates to perform a variety of plumbing tasks including reinstalling an older toilet and installing a fix around to provide hot and cold water to an outside spigot. Of the other two companies, one refused to provide an estimate on the 4 tasks without a walkthrough that would cost $80. The second company provided a free estimate but didn't notice that the flange for the toilet needed to be shortened due to the new floor. Both Smith Plumbing and the other company recommended replacing the 24 year electric water heater but Smith Plumbing's price was significantly lower than the first company and included the new water heater. Smith Plumbing provided an estimate on Monday, ordered the new water heater the same day and was at my house the very next day to perform all four tasks. The tasks were completed in one day in a very professional manner. The crew was very understanding of the new floor in the area where the toilet was reinstalled and no marks were left on the new floor. The owner (Winky) was competent, mindful of my husband's concerns with the new water heater (i.e. gas over electric), and remained in constant contact with the crew working at my house. He insured that cleanup was done in the work areas and made a return call to make sure that we didn't have any questions or problems with the installation. I would definitely use Smith Plumbing again and will recommend them to family and friends.

I called four A-rated Angie's List companies on Monday afternoon at 3:30PM. One turned me away, two could not see it until Friday and one, Winky at Smith Plumbing, said he could stop by that very evening to take a look. He stayed in contact with me so that I would know when to expect him. He showed up at 6:15PM and proceeded to enter the crawlspace with a flashlight to examine the issue. He showed me the scope of the problem as had been pointed out by some insulation contractors that morning. He stated that his schedule had a gap the very next day and that he could replace the pipe and seal the basement wall for $900. As this was causing a delay to the renovation of our crawlspace, I agreed to have him come the next day. On Tuesday, Winky showed up on time with two workers and immediately got to work. He shuttled parts to them as needed and never tried to upsell me or add to the original quote. The work was completed by 1:30PM and the area was cleaned up and organized when they left. The kicker is that the crawlspace renovation team raved about his work. They said he had done an excellent job and asked for h is contact information so that they could refer customers in the future. Winky was professional, polite, timely and extremely competitive with his pricing. I understand that in our case, he had a space in his schedule that we were able to fill on short notice - and that this is unusual. But to have an issue like this resolved in 24 hours, for the price he quoted, was beyond any reasonable expectation. I highly recommend this company and will be calling them for any of our future plumbing needs.
Description of Work: About 20 feet of cast-iron drain pipe was found to be corroded and leaking sewage into the crawlspace under our house. It extended about 5 feet inot the basement of our home, where it had been patched by a previous contractor 18 months before. The pipe needed to be cut out, replaced with PVC and the hole in the basement wall sealed.

Winky, Last December Smith Plumbing did a major plumbing fix and a full basement remodel at our home. During the epic storm last September 2011, our basement filled with over 2 feet of water due to the sewer lines backing into the house. We lost everything in our fully finished basement. As you can imagine, with Hurricane Sandy getting set to bear down on us, I was more than apprehensive to see how our basement would hold up given the amount of rain expected, and our proximity to a creek that is prone to flooding. I just wanted to let you know that we couldn't be happier with how your work held up through Hurricane Sandy. Even with all the rain and us losing power, the basement remained bone dry. I never had any doubt about the quality of your work, but it really gives us great peace of mind knowing that our home is now able to stand up to a significant weather event. I know its almost a full year later, but thank you again for the great job. Warm Regards, Steve

Overall, the experience was very harrowing and took over a week to resolve, but not due to any actions of Smith plumbing. The problem began on the Sunday before Labor Day, when I realized my whole-house sewage ejector pump was not working. I had to wait until Tuesday for my handyman to get the appropriate replacement from a plumbing supply store. Then he discovered the original pump had burned out because of a blockage. He snaked out the line inside the house, and found that the blockage was outside. I had NO outside clean-out valves, so he had to dig near the wall of the house and install one. Again, there was no clog as far as the snake would reach, so I called Smith Plumbing in to I.D. where the line ran once it left the house. He suggested that I could continue to use my handyman to install more clean-out valves, and continue snaking out the line as this would save me some money. When my handyman could not do the digging required near the main, I called Smith Plumbing back and they responded immediately. They were able to resolve the problem quickly at this point. If you have a blockage outside your house, you should first call the county in which you live and find out if they have made any modifications or done any maintenance to the nearby lines. If you are having a house built (I bought mine several years after it was built) you should ask questions and become knowledgeable about basic code-required items such as clean-out valves, exterior drains, how the system will work, etc. DO NOT RELY strictly on the county inspectors, as they can miss a lot of violations.
Description of Work: My sewage was not flowing due to a blockage. We had no clue as to where the pipe was, and there were no clean-out valves. Smith Plumbing got the line identified using a camera so that my handyman could install clean-out valves and attempt to snake out the line (over 200'). When it was determined that the problem was at the main, I called Smith Plumbing back to find the blockage. They were able to identify where my lateral connection into the main was, even though Fairfax County had incorrectly identified it. Smith Plumbing found that the connection itself had been blocked by the county when the main was re-lined. Mr. Smith gave me the chunk of liner that he had to cut out of the connection, and wrote a detailed account of what had happened so that it could be provided to the county. Mr. Smith was very responsive to all my calls and went above and beyond to help me save money in fixing the problem. I would recommend his company to others.

The project was done with no problem, permit obtained and work inspected with no problem. He was good about letting me know if he was delayed, almost always answers his cell. Highly recommended, will use again without question. Winky also noticed that I'd accidentally overpaid him by $1,500 and returned the overage within 20 minutes. :)
Description of Work: I hired Winky (the owner) to rough in new supply/drain/vent lines for a kitchen and laundry closet for a house I am renovating. He was the lowest bidder (although that wasn't the only reason I hired him) and also had some good ideas on how to save me money.

The whole project went very smoothly. Winky arrived on time for all of our meetings before construction started and on time during all of the work. He and his brother were on site for most of the job. Because the pipe had to run up the outside of the building, our neighbors in the building were concerned that it would be unsightly. Winky did a great job of matching the new pipe to all existing pipe and it blends in very well, satisfying everyone in the building. The construction phase went faster than expected and caused minimal interruption for us. When the work was complete the line passed inspection.
Description of Work: We discovered by accident that the gas lines in our condo building had been crossed during construction. Thus, only the gas used for our stove came from our meter. Our heating gas came from a neighbor's meter. We needed to find a plumber to tap into our meter and run a gas line up to our second story condo. It was a complicated process due to the size pipe required to provide sufficient btu's to the furnace-we couldn't just tap into the line going to the stove. We had trouble even finding people willing to come out and talk to us and most that did could not propose a way to get it done and have it be legal and pass inspection. Winky came up with a plan and made the project seem manageable.

His team was fast and kept within the scheduled project time. His team kept the work area clean. I recently sold my house(in 32 hours!) and I am CERTAIN it is attributatable to the outstanding job Winky and his team did in all of our bathrooms. My wife and I were VERY pleased with the results. I'd use him again in heartbeat!
Description of Work: Winky was one stop shopping! We had 2 full baths and one half bath completely redone by him, on a subsequent visit he also replaced our hotwater heater. In the bathrooms: We had tile done in all the bathrooms, including a fully tiled shower in the master. We installed all new cabinets and fixtures. He was prompt and helpful during the design and selection of materials. He was very mindful of our budget.

We couldn't have asked for a better experience. From day one, Winky (the owner of Smith Plumbing) was exceptional to work with. He arrived at our initial consultation after a 10+ hr work day for him with an upbeat and friendly attitude. He took the time to walk through the basement and ask us specific questions to get a sense of what had happened, and what our vision for bringing our space and quot;back to lifeand quot; was going to be. Our initial appointment lasted about an hour and it concluded with Winky scheduling another appointment for the next day to come back with his carpenter so that he could also walk the site and take additional notes to formulate a quote. We received our quote within 2 business days. It had specific details on the services to be provided and associated costs with the job, how long the quote was valid for, and a draw schedule clearly outlined. The quote also clearly outlined what finish materials would be additional (grout, tile, fixtures, shower door, paint, closet doors, carpet). Work commenced on December 12th, and lasted four and a half weeks. Throughout the duration of the job, Winky and his crew acted in a professional and courteous manner. They showed the utmost respect for our home (at the beginning of every work day, they lay tarps down on the hard wood floors to protect them from tracking in dirt from outside. At the end of each day, they remove them and swept up). They showed up on time, would call if there was going to be any delay, and often went the extra mile to work late or work on a weekend day to get the job done. Overall Winky managed the project great, and they delivered on time and on budget. Throughout the entire process, Winky would call every other day to check in and provide us with a work summary of where his crew was, and where they were heading next. Whenever he had the opportunity to go the extra mile he did. He picked up all of our materials, fixtures, etc from Home Depot so that we didn't have to mess up our car, he paid for 2 sessions of complete house cleaning during the job (one right before Christmas as we were hosting, and the second after the job was complete). He purchased 3 new air filters for our furnace at $30+/each ( no pass-back on cost to us) and made sure to replace them regularly during the 2 weeks where there was a significant amount of dust due to demo. I would recommend Smith Plumbing to anyone, and will be using them in the future for any and all of my plumbing and kitchen/bath needs. Winky is a professional and a gentleman who prides himself on doing things the right way. As a first time homeowner, I was completely overwhelmed with the prospect of having to manage a contractor throughout the course of this massive repair. I wanted to ensure that our interests weren't compromised, and that we didn't get left high and dry by a dishonest contractor. Winky completely eliminated that apprehension of mine from day one. If you are looking for a skilled, dependable, and honest contractor, then you should give Winky at Smith Plumbing a call.
