The men came out when scheduled and proceeded to work on the fence. They were very accommodating when I had a couple requests for some additional work. (rail replacement) Everything was done as planned and the site was left in a neat condition.
Description of Work: After the torrential storms (hurricane?) this past summer, a tree destroyed part of our fence. Luckily, it was at the back of our yard and involved an older section of fence. I immediately called Rob at Adirondack Fence. After coming out to inspect our damage, he set up a time to repair the fence. I am very happy with the repair. It is so nice to have confidence in a company and know that your repair will be done in a timely manner with quality workmanship. This is the third time I have used Adirondack Fence and I did not consider using any other company for our current repair.

We live on a corner lot in Arlington, VA. Adirondack installed 214' of 6' tall fence (although 40' of the fence was 5' tall black chain link). The rest was wooden stk cedar boards (with pine posts), alternating boards, Mount Vernon dip with Gothic posts. I cannot say enough good things about Adirondack and specifically Rob Darnell, the owner. I contacted Rob in the winter of 2012 to get an estimate. He was one of many estimates we got. We decided to postpone putting up a fence until the summer. I had Rob and 2 other companies come back to provide us with an updated estimate in June 2012. Rob, unlike the other companies, gave us the same price even though his rates (due to demand, building materials, etc) were higher in the summer than the winter months. We had a difficult time deciding what style of fence to go with and whether to use cedar or pine boards. Again, unlike other companies, Rob did not push any style or material and was very honest about the pros and cons of each choice. Rob was also very patient with us as we went changed our minds, and if he did not pick up his phone right away, he always called back promptly and talked to us thoroughly (and repeatedly) about each style choice. As a side note, my experience with other companies was that they pushed the materials that they had in stock or could get good prices on, and not what was best for the client. Once we had settled on an alternating cedar board fence, Rob sent us to another client's house to look at their fence which was done in the same style. That client also had great things to say about Rob and his team. Due to his busy summer schedule, Rob was not able to schedule the appointment until many weeks later. However, the minute Rob had a cancellation (much earlier than we expected) Rob called us and we set up an appointment the very next week. He estimated 2-3 days for installation and delivered on time. He and his team came out to our house and walked us through every aspect of the work before beginning. Rob's team was terrific. They are all employees (not temporary contractors) and have been working with Rob for many years. They were diligent and their workmanship was incredible. It was obvious that they worked as a "team" along with Rob who worked alongside them (and did not take off to attend to other jobs). Before beginning the work, Rob put up posts and strung a line around our yard so that we could visually see the line of work. Above all, I was most impressed that Rob made last minute suggestions for changes once he could see the posts up and the line strung across our yard. He communicated these changes to us which we thoroughly agreed with. He did not just get to work in order to move on to another project. Moreover, he did not charge us for any changes, including installing a larger gate that would be more visually appealing than the original gate we had discussed. The only change we paid for was deciding at the last minute on having the alternating boards more closely spaced together (thus requiring additional boards) in order to keep the look we liked but with more privacy. Rob did not push back on this last minute change and immediately began searching for additional boards from his suppliers. The work was immaculately done. I am certain that our fence is the nicest in our entire neighborhood and many of our neighbors have commented on how great it looks. I would not hesitate to hire Rob again and would recommend him and his team to anyone.

Rob was excellent with the estimate, planning, and supervising the initial installation. However, one problem with the installation was that he didn't have his crew raise the boards off the ground an inch or two as we had discussed, but this was pretty minor. Through no fault of his, I realized that the fence was not actually placed on my property line. So I called him and asked what it would take to move the fence, and he said while it wouldn't likely be as good as the original installation, they could do a good job. So I paid an additional $1500 to move the one fence line. Everything looked good for a few months, but as summer began, I noticed one of the top panels overlying the lattice was curling up away from the post. Basically, the nails weren't holding the panel down against the lattice and post. So I called him to see if it could be fixed, and he said it would be $100 for fixing that. I felt like this was pretty high for what I felt was a faulty installation, so I elected not to go with him. Over the next few months, multiple other top panels started to curl up as well. Then the derecho storm came and damaged two whole panels, so I emailed him (we had emailed him multiple times before) asking if he could give me an estimate for repairing those panels, in addition to reattaching the other top pieces that were curling up. I emailed him a second time, but I never received a response. So I moved on and got several other estimates, and wound up getting a professional handyman to fix both damaged panels and to replace the six top pieces that had curled up, all for $165. Afterwards, the handyman mentioned that the fence builders used such short nails attaching the panels to the posts and lattice that there was no way they would hold. He was shocked that a fence company would use that hardware on a fence. That really upset me because it seemed like Adirondack used shoddy building technique, and that was the reason I was having problems so soon after installation. And then when I initially asked him about the problem with the curling top panels, Rob said it would cost $100 for them to come out and fix just one. I feel that should have been something he corrected for free, because it was something that could have been prevented if the proper hardware had been used. So taking into account the problems I've had with the fence, and the ignoring of my follow-up email, I would not ever use this company again.

Response from Adirondack Fence Builders
I try very hard to make sure every customer of mine is happy, and maintain an excellent rating. The Member was no exception. What the Member has failed to mention is I explained to him no warrenty on moving a fence due to compromising it's integrity, he said he understood. But I gave the Member a second option, I would drop off two cedar boards at his house and just charge him for the boards $10 total. He agreed to this. He stiffed me on the $10, so there was no way I was going to do any more work for him. We use 3" ringshank galvanized nails for our framing and 2" spiral shank galvanized nails for all boards, this is industry standard and our standard for 12 years and over 1500 fences we have built. So I don't know what his so called "handyman" is talking about. Rob

Our Alexandria homeowners association talked to many fence companies as we prepared to replace our perimeter fence. We chose Adirondack largely because of Rob Darnell, who is fast, responsive and clearly knows his business. The price was in line with other estimates but we liked the fact that Rob has a great crew with no subcontractors and that he promised to be on the job every day. He was true to his word and we were able to consult and make a few changes as the fence proceeded. Adirondack removed an existing fence and built our 8 foot, solid board cedar fence to the grade of a hill, every board nailed to complete a pleasing line with no step-downs. The cheerful crew members worked hard, even though they had to contend with a buried power line close to the fenceline, which required caution. They were remarkably careful of all the trees and shrubbery planted close to the fence. It was a truly collaborative effort that left us feeling we got a quality product for a fair price.
Description of Work: Demolished existing fence, built 315 feet of cedar solid-board fence on 6-inch posts with top and bottom trim and milled cedar post caps. Designed and built a section of transitional fencing of 4-foot cedar pickets.

Wonderful business to do business with. Really was a one day.
Description of Work: I used this company's service and didn't even know they were part of A List's referrals. They were building a fence at a neighbor's house and I saw the great work. They built a fence for my child care center. Very prompt, kept to the timeline and were reasonable compared to the other estimate.

Rob was the reason we choose to go with Adirondack. From day one he was prompt, very easy to work with and gave us a fair quote that was right in line with what we were willing to spend. The crew showed up on time and finished the project in 2 days. We were extrememly satisfied with the quality of work and their attention to detail with every part of the job...even the cleanup. I would highly recommend Rob and his crew and would absolutely use them again.
Description of Work: Removed old chain link fence that surrounded entire perimeter of yard; put up new fence in backyard - 6' alternating board. Our yard was a bit more challenging because they had to work around large trees, thick bushes and a hill with a steep grade. They did a great job keeping the landscape intact where we wanted them to, without compromising the look of the fence.

I left a VM for Adirondack on 7/5. Rob called me back within 24 hours and discussed my project needs. Rob was very helpful and honest during our conversation. He set my expectations by telling me that they are extremely busy due to the recent storm (fence repairs) and would not be able to start another project for 6 weeks. I probably will not use Adirondack because of the time frame for my project, but I appreciate the quick response, honesty, and additional information Rob provided. I would definitely consider Adirondack for future home improvement needs.

The entire experience was easy from start to finish. Rob was thoughtful, responsive, honest and professional throughout the process. Estimate/Price: He came out to our house to give us a free estimate for the fence and arrived on time. We were also thinking of adding a metal handrail down to our basement walk-out and, while Rob was happy to give us a quote, he also cautioned us that they are fence builders first and that he would likely sub it out at cost. His honesty was refreshing and we appreciated that he was looking out for us -- you can tell that, above all, he wants satisfied customers more than anything else. The price for the fence was near the low end of our range of quotes, so it was a very easy decision to go with Adirondack. Permit/Scheduling: Rob was the only contractor we spoke to that had basic knowledge about the requirement to get a permit in DC for constructing a new fence. We had to get the permit ourselves, but it was concerning that other contractors didn't seem to know (or care) whether or not we got one (a neighbor of ours got fined $2,000 by DC for not having proper permits, so we knew it was important!). Once we got the permit, he has us scheduled within a week or two. Rain delayed his team by a couple of days, but he always called ahead to let us know. Work Product: Once they started, they finished in a day and a half and his team was diligent, courteous and professional. They cleaned up after the work was done and made sure to remove anything dangerous (nails, etc.) that could be found by our two young boys. We couldn't be happier with the final product! The attention to detail is what impressed us the most: they used 6 x 6 posts for the gates instead of 4 x 4 posts, the gates and latches are sturdy and work well, the spacing of the boards (alternating front and back) is very precise, they were very thoughtful about how to construct a portion of the fence where the elevation changes, and they did not disturb our A/C unit or the neighbor's bushes, which are very close to the new fenceline. I would not hestitate to recommend Rob and his team at Adirondack to anyone. Everyone should get multiple quotes when considering fence contractors, but one of those quotes should definitely be Adirondack.
Description of Work: Adirondack removed the old chain-link fence around our backyard (about 40' by 60') and replaced most of it with a 6' high wooden fence. The new fence included two gates.

We called adirondack fence for an estimate based on the outstanding reviews. We were not disappointed. Rob was responsive throughout the process from estimate to completion of the project. He came out, took measurements and listened to what we wanted. He offered suggestions where needed. He and his crew build the fences from scratch and you can really see the difference in their work product over another very well known company that I've used in the past. We chose a fine grade of cedar and between that and adirnondack's workmanship the result is outstanding. I have never written a review before but feel their work was outstanding. As someone who relies on reviews i thought it might help others to know that we highly recommend adirondack.

The entire experience with Rob, owner of Adirondak Builders, and his crew, was professional and refreshing. We actually received two other estimates before getting one from Adirondak Fence. We decided to join Angies List in order to look up well referenced fence builders. Our experience with Adirondak Fence did not disappoint. Rob came out to the house and met with my husband. He gave us an estimate that was in between the two we previously received. Rob said he could build us what we wanted at an affordable price. That, coupled with the Angie's list reviews, made going with Adirondak Builders the clear choice. We did not have to do anything but get the fence approved by our HOA. Rob took care of everything else. A few days before the fence was to go up I had some questions. Rob called back in a timely manner, we actually spoke a few times that day - and everything that needed to be addressed was. The day of the actual installation Rob and his crew showed up promptly at 7:00 in the morning. I told him I needed to be to work at 8:00 and he was on time to start the job. We walked around the yard and ironed out last minute details. When I came home from work at 5:00 I was greeted by an absolutely gorgeous fence. The neighbors are jealous. The neighborhood has been beautified and Adirondak Builders can count on me to recommend them to anyone who needs a fence.

We sought estimates from about 4 contractors. Rob's bid came in right in the middle and seemed to be a very fair price. He was prompt, professional, and very helpful to us. We decided to go with him for the fence and asked him to fit us in to his schedule as soon as possible. He was very responsive to this request, and juggled things around for us. Even after that, we had to postpone the build at the last minute because of permitting issues, and he was extremely understanding and flexible. Throughout our permitting and planning process, he was both knowledgeable and helpful. When we finally got our permit arranged and were ready to go with the build, he was very flexible about what we wanted to build--he told us he could pretty much build whatever we wanted, so long as we told him in advance so he could get the right materials. On the day of the build, he was prompt, efficient, and extremely professional, and handled the challenges arising from our situation (permits, neighbors, etc) very gracefully. When all was said and done we got a very good deal on the pricing for the fence, which, when it was built, was absolutely beautiful. We are very satisfied with the fence Rob built and recommend him very highly for any fence project. He is an expert and a craftsman and a pleasure to work with. If you are nervous or uncertain about hiring contractors--as I was--you can't go wrong contacting Rob to build your fence. He has the necessary expertise and knowledge combined with professionalism and a nice, friendly, easygoing manner. We will be calling him in the future for additional fence projects, without a doubt.
Description of Work: Rob built about 100 feet of fence--a 5ft high good neighbor cedar privacy fence and a gate. He installed all the posts and built the fence exactly to our specifications.

The job went very smoothly. The men arrived on time (or earlier), started to work, and had completed a section of fence before I spoke to Rob. We discussed the details of the job, my concerns, and other issues that related to the overall job. He checked out the gate and determined that it didn't have to be replaced at this time. Rob is very honest, and does not attempt to do unnecessary work just to make more money. I respect this characteristic and wish it was more prevalent among other companies. Again, I highly recommend Andirondack Builders and will hire Rob for any future fencing jobs I may have.
Description of Work: This was the second job Rob did for me within the past year. This time he had a bigger crew (4 men) because he wanted to complete the job in one day. I was a little nervous about this, since I initially hired him to do the work himself with one assistant. However. his men were extremely conscientious and competent. They installed approximately 300 feet of split rail fence. Also, they did a few other repairs that were not on my contract. They cleaned up well after completing the job. I am very pleased with the job, the quality of materials, and its execution.

Rob and his crew at Adirondack Fence did an outstanding job building an estate style fence for our backyard. They were professional throughout the process and did a great job keeping me informed on the project and making sure that the fence was built to my liking. Rob was very patient as we worked through some changes and had helpful suggestions and explanations on how the fence should look. Rob and his crew showed up on time, kept the area clean and when they left for the night they made sure that all the building materials and scraps were cleaned up and stored neatly. it was a job well done! I would highly recommend Adirondack Fence to anyone who is interested in having a fence built !!!

After moving into a new home, my dogs began jumping over the existing fences. Rob responded to my request for an estimate very quickly and made several recommendations that were excellent. He was able to work me into the work schedule quickly recognizing that given the dog situation that I needed to get the new fences in quickly. I appreciated his understanding! The back fence had been placed intersecting the actual property line and I wanted it placed correctly. Because the existing fence was lined with mature laurel trees, I wanted to put the new fence in so that the trees could be transplanted elsewhere once we got past the winter. Rob was able to do this with only minor adjustments. In addition, there is tremendous elevation differences in the yard and with his advice I was able to get the fence to be of sufficient height to constrain the dogs and make a visually pleasing top line. Rob worked with two regular crewmen and all were responsive and pleasant to work with. The job took a little longer than expected, largely because of weather considerations. I'm very pleased with the new fence. It looks great and my dogs no longer go walkabout. Rob is fabulous to work with - maybe because he understood all my concerns re: the yard and how to work with my large dog needs. While discussing my other plans for the yard (which has some water issues) I mentioned that I was going to be hauling an old swingset left by the previous owner away. Rob offered to use his materials truck to haul it away for me; an offer I gratefully took as it took one more thing of my "to-do" list. Aside from the timeliness and quality of the work, Rob was an absolute joy to work with; a careful listener, thoughtful, responsive, and good-humored. I'd definitely recommend Adirondack Fencing (or any other company Rob is running) and if I need additional work in the future I will will call him first.

Rob from Adirondack came over one morning to provide the estimate and we went through in detail what I was looking for, and that I wanted a couple different estimates. (I wanted to see the difference in cost for an alternate-board fence vs something with a lattice top.) We discussed that the reason for the fence change was due to our new dog's ability to jump over the fence, and so that the fence needed to come all the way to the ground. He was very understanding of my questions and requests, and quickly measured the property and noted that he would get us an estimate within a day or so. He actually emailed me the estimate the next day. We decided to use Adirondack for our fencing (alternate-board / or board-on-board). The week before they wanted to come out, Rob called and let us know what day and time they were going to begin. They arrived promptly at 7:30am (the time he said they would arrive) and quickly began unloading. A little after they began, our neighbor came out and complained that our old fencing was on their property (news to us!). Despite the craziness that ensued, Rob and his team continued to work and even offered several alternatives for us to consider given the news of our property line problems. They changed the fence outline very quickly to meet with our new needs and were very friendly and helpful throughout the project. They even spoke with our neighbors to confirm the outline met their needs as well when we were at work and unable to reach them. As this decreased our total linear footage, Rob reduced our price to meet the reduced number of feet. One thing to note was that other companies could start our project sooner (within a week or so) as compared to Adirondack which we knew would not be able to begin our project for at least 2-3 weeks. We liked the level of customer service we received from Adironcdack and decided to use Adirondack despite the delay. Obviously, it was worth the wait. The project took 2 days, and the end product is amazing. It's exactly what we wanted! The service was impeccable and was tailored to our needs. I appreciate Rob's attention to detail and great customer service. I would highly recommend Adirondack to friends and family.
Description of Work: Remove our chainlink fence and replace with 6-foot tall privacy fence. Total footage was approximately 280 feet. We replaced with 6-foot ceder plank, board-by-board/alternating board, with pine posts and rails.

They did an excellent job. The site was uneven, and they did a good job of installing the fence to accommodate the grade. Mr. Darnel was very easy to work with. He understood my request, and did a great job with everything.
Description of Work: They repaired a section of an existing fence, and installed 22 feet of new fence.

Robb Darnell of Adirondack responded to my first call within 24 hours and came to view the property and develop a quote within 4 days. It was clear at the start was Robb was more experienced/creative then the other groups who were giving me quotes. He asked questions about potential problems and proposed solutions in that first visit that others either didn't see or didn't want to discuss. This included having two trees growing along the propertry line and how to incorporate them into the design (rather then simply cutting them down), and how to deal with the large size of the driveway gate to minimize stress on the posts and hardware. He was clear upfront about his start and finish dates and i decided to go with Adirondack even though he was booked a month in advance. It was a good decision. Adirondack finished on time and within budget despite some complications (i.e. there was an unexpected foundation along the property line that requred a lot more effort to excavate the post holes). The result is a solidly built, great looking fence and gate at a very competitive price.
Description of Work: Replaced a boundary fence with a 7' "jailhouse topped" fence, built a 4' fence and built a cedar driveway gate.

We called several companies to get estimates to replace a section of our chain link fence. I chose to use Adirondack Fence Co because Rob was punctual, very polite, honest, and gave me an excellent rate. It was a small job but Rob treated me great and never tried to sell me more than I needed. The workman showed up on time and did a good job. I am very happy and when it comes time to replace my whole fence I will definitely use Adirondack Fence Co.

Since we have a dog they even closed a small gap in a corner between our neighbor's fences. The fence looks great. We are very pleased with the work.

Rob is a personable guy and was good to work with. He came to estimate and was on-site most of the day when the work was done. Good quality work and clean up and I would hire again.
