First talked to Peter Young on the phone when our asbestos test came back positive following a flood. We'd been told by Service Master to have our 1971 home in the Greenbriar section of Fairfax checked for asbestos. Peter's son Evan came out initially and wrote a proposal which we then forwarded to State Farm as it's an insurance claim. State Farm kicked the bid back as too expensive. We went then to ACM in Rockville and got nearly the same bid. We found ACM to be very professional as well. The key difference was that Young Env would arrange to have a POD delivered and had a crew who'd move furniture for us so work could begin quickly. That, frankly, sold us on Young. ACM seemed like a quality outfit too. Peter and crew arrived at the house on a Monday at 630 am and began work immediately. We spoke with them every day of the three day job. They were very precise, very clean and left the house very neat. The two restoration contractors we spoke with following the asbestos work both commented on the nice job Young did and the face that they marked which doors went where. We were very very pleased with Peter and his crew and his third-party evaluator, Geller Environmental. We'd definitely recommend. I get the feeling he's not cheap, but I would go so far as to say that he's worth it when you're dealing with hazardous materials and the health of your family.
Description of Work: Removed asbestos vinyl tile, wallboard and ceilings in two bedrooms, living room, dining room, foyer, half-bath and master bath. Did major demolition work for us following a flood.

Peter Young was very prompt and accessible. His accessibility permitted an immediate and successful response to an unexpected issue involving the town/county permit. The work was able to proceed as planned without a delay. The work was done to my complete satisfaction. Everything was fully explained to me ahead of time. The cost was reasonable and included approximately $350.00 paid to an independent company for a final air quality report.

Terrific. The process was thoroughly explained to me during the estimate. The team arrived early and even helped me move some stuff that I hadn't had time to move before they arrived. They were polite and finished within the estimated timeframe. They cleaned up thoroughly and the air retesting (which I had performed by another company independent of Young) tested favorably.

This work was performed at a tenant occupied house. Young Environmental coordinated with the tenant to inspect the basement floor and provided me with advice and a cost estimate for eliminating the asbestos foor tiles and asbestos containing adhesive. After getting the go ahead to perform the work, they again coordinated with the tenant and performed the work at the tenant's convenience. All the work was done in one day. I checked with the tenant and they were pleased with the work and attitude of the workmen. I received an emial invoice and paid by check. Young Environmental was very user friendly: I was able to handle my end over the phone and by email and they were respectful of my tenant's needs.

THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. A FIRST-CLASS OPERATION. THE INITIAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCEDURE, WHICH IS ELABORATE, WAS VERY HELPFUL. AFTER THAT, EVERYTHING WENT LIKE CLOCKWORK. AFTER THE CREW ARRIVED, I LEFT A CHECK, WENT TO WORK, AND CALLED MY HEATING SERVICE TO CONFIRM THAT THEY COULD ARRIVE THE NEXT DAY WITH A NEW FURNACE, AS SCHEDULED. THE WHOLE PROCESS WENT VERY SMOOTHLY AND I FELT AT ALL TIMES LIKE I WAS IN GOOD HANDS.
Description of Work: YOUNG ENVIRONMENTAL WAS HIRED TO REMOVE THE ASBESTOS IN A 50-YEAR-OLD FURNACE IN MY BASEMENT. MR. YOUNG EXPLAINED THE PROCEDURE IN DETAIL WHEN I CALLED. THE ESTIMATOR ARRIVED THE NEXT DAY. MR. YOUNG ARRIVED WITH THE CREW PROMPTLY ON THE DAY SCHEDULED. THE WORK WAS COMPLETED AND THE LACK OF ASBESTOS WAS CONFIRMED BY AN INDEPENDENT TESTING SERVICE WITHIN 5 HOURS, AS FORECAST.

The room was fully covered in plastic and air was vented outside through a HEPA filter system. This was all handled very professionally and at least this way, we were not exposed to asbestos and there was no plaster dust left behind by the work. Final inspection was done by an independent group as required whenever asbestos is involved. The final air quality inspection was passed with no problems. Based on comments from the inspectors, this is always the case for jobs done by Young Environmental. Overall we were very satisfied and would call Young Environmental first if a similar need arose again.
Description of Work: As with many houses built in the early 60s in this area, our house has asbestos in several places. We used Peter Young's group to remove a plaster ceiling (30' x 13' room) that had suffered structural problems and at the same time abate asbestos insulation present around heating ducts in the ceiling that would be exposed when the ceiling was removed.

Mr. Young (junior) came out to provide estimates for tile removal in our basement. He provided some options (outside of what their company does - e.g. containment vs. removal, testing, etc.). It was helpful information. We got a quote for remediation promptly. It then took awhile (on our end) to work with our insurance company. When we contacted Young & Co to perform the remediation work, they were very responsive and the work was scheduled on the day we requested. They crew and Mr. Young (senior) came in and discussed exactly what would happen. I was also reassured about some disturbance of the tile that had occurred recently (a family member dragging furniture around on the tile). They were very accomodating and moved some large pieces of furniture, tarps and area rugs. We also opted for Geller Labs to inspect the area for asbestos and they called after a few hours with the results. The whole process was very easy. The area was very clean and tidy. There was a mild chemical smell in that area for a few days, which I attribute to a sealant of the floor after the tile was removed (all of the glue/mastic cannot be scraped up).

Since I was attempting to follow the "get 3 estimates" rule, I reluctantly selected Young from Angie's list. I was little spooked by another member's report and the subsequent reply by Young. I spoke with Peter Young over the phone to set up the appointment for the estimate. He thoroughly described the process of asbestos removal and that was very nice. The estimator came on time for the scheduled appointment and went over the whole process. They provided the estimate via e-mail on time. The price for tile removal was competitive, the mastic removal was almost double, and they wanted to charge me for carpet removal. Overall, they seemed very knowledgable but a little too pricey.

This experience has been terrible. We trusted this company with everything we care most about; the health of our children and the safety of our home. They sent an incompetent kid to our home and then made multiple mistakes in the estimate. We were as clear as we could possibly have been about what we needed done and questioned him multiple times on answers that he gave that were unclear. When questioned, they took no responsibility and blamed us for miscommunicating. We are left to start over and find a new abatement specialist and forced to wait longer for someone to clean up our mess. Had the owner taken any responsibility or acknowledged that his son did not know what he was doing and should never have been in our home, the conversation would never have become heated and we might have trusted them to move forward. But if someone completely denies responsibility even for an estimate, I don't want to think about what they would do if they made a mistake in our home.
Description of Work: We contacted Young Environmental based on the excellent reviews on Angies List. A different company recently came to our home to clean up basement flooding and pulled up asbestos tile, blowing dust asbestos dust throughout our home. We called Young Environmental to help clean up the mess and remove the remaining tile safely. The owner, Peter, sent his 21 year-old son Evan to collect information about the job so that we could receive an estimate. Evan spent about 2 hours in our home; we walked him through all 3 levels and provided as much detail as we could. We asked for an estimate with 2 options; one in which the entire abatement and cleaning for the entire house was done, and one that additionally included pulling up the rest of the tile and sealing the floor. We then walked him through the upstairs and asked him specifically what they would clean and what we would need to throw away. We lacked a lot of knowledge on specifics and told us to contact his father, which we did. We asked him how long the process would take to do the entire house and he said 1-2 days, which we questioned b/c it seemed too quick. He reassured us that they would send a team of 4-5 people and that they "are Hispanics that work incredibly fast." When he left he said he'd get us the estimate by noon the next day, which he did. When we received the estimate it did not include pulling up the rest of the tile, so we called and had them resend a new estimate so that we could submit the correct one to the insurance company, who we were meeting with the same day. They sent a new one within an hour or two. After receiving the estimate we contacted them the same night to set up a time for them to begin. They called us back the next day and said that the estimate did not include any cleaning upstairs; only the basement. When we questioned him on it, he said that he could do the work but that the estimate would be higher and that they likely couldn't schedule it for another week because it would take more than two days. I became angry and asked him why Evan had not done any of the things we asked him to do. His response was that "Evan doesn't write the estimates, I do, and I base them on what you have been telling me on the phone." We then asked why he even sent Evan to our house at all and he became angry and told us that he didn't need to work for us and didn't want to hear anything further. At one point in the conversation I attempted to apologize for my heated tone and he told me that he wasn't interested in hearing it and that it was our fault, not Evans, that the estimate was incorrect.

Response from Young Environmental Services
This person is not a customer, my actual customers are very happy. The proposed service was apparently never discussed between husband and wife, the proposal was a reflection of long conversations with the husband. The "incompetent kid" is my son and a VA trained Asbestos Supervisor. All this lady had to do was make here wishes known and the proposal would have been revised. Instead, I return a phone call to be treated unprofessionally, insulted and yelled at. The terrible things said by this lady should be said to no person, and coming from a female makes it more alarming. I though I was getting good at identifying the small % of the population to stay away from ...

While updating our kitchen, we identified asbestos containing tiles in the kitchen and other parts of the house. When we called Young Environmental Services, Peter was very professional and responsive to the questions I was asking. He was on time for the estimate and communicated very effectively over email and phone. The prices were very competitive when compared to other remediation services. The crew showed up on time and started working immediately. When we arrived hours later to check the completed work, all tiles were removed and no sign of trash or debris was visible. I was even informed that some parts of the removal was more difficult than expected due to some issues with the wood. They even called additional personnel and finished on time. We are very satisfied with the work of this company. Highly recommended.

Both Peter and the tech showed up 15 minutes early and waited outside my home until the scheduled 9:00 a.m. arrival. Apparently it is their practice to show up early so that they knock on your door promptly on time. (In this area, that is a great practice). It was an extemely easy and pleasant process to go through. I felt totally confident in the tech's ability and felt safe throughout.
Description of Work: In my attempt to remodeling my bathroom, I came across asbestos tiles. I called Young Environmental Services, via Angie's List, to have them removed. I had a very informative conversation with Peter Young and an estimate appt. was set up for the next day. The estimator arrived right on time, did his calculations and was done. He was very professional and new what he was doing. Peter showed up on the 8th, along with his technician, and re-confirmed the work to be done. He wanted to make sure his tech and my home were safe during the removal process. We were very impressed with his professionalism. After sealing the bathroom, the tech turned on a negative air filter and removed all the asbestos flooring. The area was completely cleaned up and ready for my next phase of remodeling.

The crew arrived on time and used plastic to set off the return air duct. (This is where asbestos impregnated fiberboard had been used when our house was built in the mid 1940's. We were please to learn it was non-friable.) W turned off the air conditioning and about 22 feet x 16 inches of the base of the cold air return was removed. Everything was done carefully. The testing company that came out at the end indicated no particulates were left. (The testing was done by a different company.)
Description of Work: The possible presence of asbestos was indicated by the home inspector while we were selling our house. We had the suspect material tested and then started looking for asbestos abatement, i.e., removal, companies. (The cost given includes asbestos testing and testing after removal, neither of which were charges by Young Environmental.) Young Environmental, which we learned about on Angie's List, promptly answered our e-mail and, in the person of the firm's owner, came out promptly to inspect the potential work before giving an estimate. He clearly explained the procedure his company would use. The work crew arrived on time. The firm's owner was present to make certain that the project would begin well. We were impressed by his friendly, professional manner and continued to be favorably impressed by Young Environmental when the project was done.

Peter answered some questions over the phone after my inspector called him. He then came out the next day, and determined that the house did not in fact have asbestos, the ducts were metal. Since the house has mold, I also asked to give me an estimate on the mold remediation. He did so, but since I plan to do much of the removal work myself, he suggested that other contractors would be much cheaper for the work that I need done professionally. His honesty and quick response to my call were just wonderful, and I am so grateful for that. I will definitely call him again if I have work that I need his professional services for.
Description of Work: During both the regular and mold inspection of a house that I plan to buy, the inspectors thought that the HVAC ducts in the slab might have asbestos. The home inspector called Peter to get opinion as to whether was he was seeing was asbestos. Peter did, and at my request, he agreed to come the next day to give me an estimate of remediation.

I had Mr. Young over for an estimate shortly after I called. He came, spent a fair amount of time with me explaining all there was about asbestos and abatement. He walked me at length through the process involved - including all of the rules and regulations. His price was pretty consistant with other quotes I recieved, however, I was impressed with Mr. Young's knowledge and willingness to spend time with me discussing all the issues involved. Mr. Young was on-time for both the estimate and the work performed. Mr. Young kept in contact with me throughout the day - as the work progressed. His crew was extremely hard working, professional and curious. Hopefully I won't have a use for them again, but if I do, I won't bother with others.

Peter Young couldn't have been more professional and his crew was excellent. They were sensitive to my concerns about my toddler's presence in the house during the removal and explained how his crew would work and the chemicals involved. His team was arrived on the service day at the agreed time and worked efficiently. They finished a little early, Peter inspected the job, and they cleaned up so well we almost couldn't tell we'd had a crew in the house. Just excellent. When flooring installers later damaged the work his crew had done, he responded to my panicked call on a weekend and advised us how to secure the area until it could be repaired.
Description of Work: The project involved the removal of asbestos tiles and mastic from a flood-damaged portion of our basement (approx 100 sq ft) and sealing the exposed area so that new flooring could be installed. Because the cost of this work was covered by our homeowners' insurance following a flood, we cannot rate on the cost.

Peter came, gave an estimate, then scheduled the work when we needed it done (several contractors worked on the house in a short period of time). We had to schedule it after demo in a room that had the asbestos tile, but before the flooring company came to lay the new flooring. He scheduled us on the day that we needed, showed up, did the work, and left on time. (He even removed the tile from the front closet floor, which was not part of the original space we inquired about -- at no additional charge). He was very helpful throughout the process, and I was very satisfied that the work was done quickly, and exactly on budget.
Description of Work: We recently purchased a new home. Testing of the tile floor on the lowest level indicated asbestos in about 750 sq. ft. The asbestos tile was removed from the entire area.

During a home inspection on a 30 year old townhouse, water damage was found in a basement exterior wall. Peter from Young Environmental came in to look behind the wall for signs of mold and found evidence of light mold. He provided an estimate for remediation and explained what would be done during the mold remediation. His crew came in right on time and worked incredibly efficiently to perform the work. They took care not to destroy existing carpet and to not break molding during inspection of areas where they were not sure mold would be found and cleaned up after their work extremely well. During the process of taking up the carpet, asbestos tile was found. Peter explained the situation and all my options and was able to perform extra abatement work that day. I was impressed with everything except the price. To remove the asbestos tile and glue, I was charged $500, despite the fact that his crew finished the whole job at the estimated time despite the the extra work of removing tile and glue. When I asked for a break on the price, he explained that he paid his crew by the job, not by the hour. I understand this, but $500 seemed steep.
Description of Work: A negative pressure containment environment was established in the work area. Carpet was partially pulled up to allow access to baseboards and 4 feet of sheetrock were removed in basement to expose cinderblock walls. Mold was removed from wood behind sheetrock. Carpet was treated and HEPA vacuumed. Cinder blocks were scrubbed and treated with mold inhibitor. Asbestos tile was removed and glue from tile was removed.

I was buying a house that had a fairly significant mold infestation in the basement. Had a contractor in who quoted higher and indicated that the asbestos tiles did not need to be removed because mold only lived on organic material and the glue for the tiles was not organic. Home inspector indicated that there was mold between and under the tiles and they should be removed. Peter Young indicated tiles should be removed. Third company called in for a quote indicated tiles needed to be removed. In the end, Peter Young had the lowest quote, and easily worked with three demanding real estate agents, a very nervous buyer, and an even more nervous buyer's mother! During the process the individuals completing the mold removal accidently removed studs that should have remained in place; Mr. Young paid to have the studs replaced out of his own pocket. Basement is now very clean, and mold and asbestos free.
Description of Work: Company was hired to remove mold and asbestos tile in the basement of a house. This include stripping the basement down to the studs, treating any mold on joists, treating mold on cinder block, removing asbestos tiles from the basement floor and treating mold on the floor. Company removed all mold infested items and asbestos tiles.
